Every generation hopes the legacy we leave our children, and the state the world they are left to live in, is one that is bigger and better than what we lived in before. We aspire to provide due diligence providing them the best opportunity to live the life they deserve and a positive future. Not only for our children, but for their children's children and generations to come. However, due to the escalating mental health crisis facing our children, the ability for us as parents and careers to provide this is slightly questionable. Disappointingly, the statistic of childhood obesity, mental health conditions, self-harm and suicide are all greater than ever before Did you know almost fifty per cent of the factors that determine children's psychological wellbeing and happiness come from the environments in which they are raised? So, this tell us that we do have the power to positively influence our children's lives and help raise a mentally fit generation. To help explain how we can do this, welcome our special guest and beautiful human being, Kari Sutton Kari is an expert in fostering children's positive mental health. Kari has helped over 25,000 children, parents, and educators with evidence-based strategies, tools and approaches as well as common sense tips that help kids stop worrying so much and to manage their anxiety. Her expertise has made her an in-demand conference speaker, author and consultant in wanting to foster children's positive mental health. She launch her second book “Raising a Mentally Fit Generation” in November 2020. We ask Kari questions including: Having worked as a teacher and guidance counsellor for the past 25 years, how have you seen the dramatic rise in anxiety disorders, depression and suicide affecting our kids? What are the 10 key components to mental fitness mentioned in your book? What is Mental Fitness and how can it benefit our children? How can Mental Fitness impact a child's mental health? You draw a distinction between Mental Fitness and Resilience - what's the difference? You have a strong view that a lot of our children are struggling to develop resilience, why do you think that is? What are some of the successful strategies and tools your clients are implementing with their children that we can learn from? What are your best tips for future-proofing the next generation? What is the effect if childhood mental illnesses are left untreated? 258. 8 Harsh Truths About Dating (from a former professional dater)

Love Your Work

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 24, 2021 8:06

I once was a professional dater. I was good at getting dates. I was terrible at finding a partner – which I really wanted. I went on so many dates, I made $150,000 on an online-dating-advice blog (which I recently shut down). I've now been in a relationship for several years. Here are the harsh truths I wish my single self had known. Dating is noise. There's nothing about dating that has anything to do with being in a relationship. Dating provides false signals. If someone is exciting on a date, that's often a sign they'll be a nightmare in a relationship. If someone is boring on a date, they may be great in a relationship. I don't know how to fix that, other than be very careful how you judge whether or not a date went well. You'll never be “ready” for a relationship. Self-help books will tell you, “You have to love yourself before you can love someone else,” as if you'll never be ready until you've achieved the platonic ideal of a fully-formed human. At that point, you and another fully-formed human will fit together like puzzle pieces – forever. More likely you'll meet someone who's screwed up in the perfect way to complement your own screwed-up-ness. You'll change one another, and your best hope is the people you change into will also be compatible. You'll never be “ready.” You'll always be changing. Yes, you need someone. Once in a while you might decide you're fine being alone. A self-help book will tell you it's okay to be single and you'll be happy in life with hobbies, personal achievements, and pets. This is just fuel for the hedonic treadmill that keeps capitalism running. New products and services are always being invented with the purpose of replacing some form of love – whether that's a meal delivered to your door, or a ride home from the airport. Love is free, but priceless. Love is bad for GDP. If dating is miserable, you're miserable. Many people's stated dating preferences are emotional judo to justify their own unhappiness. If you say to yourself, “I cannot be happy until I meet someone with [insert impossible set of criteria],” you have a great scapegoat for your unhappiness, besides its true source. Don't blame your misery on not finding what you want. Perfectionism is a refusal to start the journey before you've reached the destination. Beware the ferris wheel. There's a self-selection bias in the dating pool. It's full of miserable people who blame their dating life on why they're miserable. If you want proof, look at dating profiles. I don't know how men feel about this question, but when I was dating I remember seeing many a woman's profile demanding men have something better to say than “How are you?” The problem is, there is literally no question more central to existence than “How are you?” Every action every person takes their entire day is in pursuit of affecting the answer to the question, “How are you?” A truthful answer to “How are you?” is guaranteed to lead to a conversation relevant to your well-being. And isn't that what dating is supposed to be about? So why would someone not want to answer the question, “How are you?” Because they're miserable. They don't want a real conversation – they want a source of entertainment. What does this have to do with a ferris wheel? Dating apps are especially full of these miserable people. Dating apps are like ferris wheels: Some people would like to see the lay of the land, but the seats are taken up by people addicted to the ups and downs. People are not e-commerce items. Dating apps give the illusion of customization. There is no magic algorithm, there is not an unlimited supply from which to deliver your perfect match, and you would be shocked with whom you can be happy. The lines of code are designed to play into your narcissism. Like Narcissus, you'll think you're looking at someone else, when you're only seeing yourself. It's a person, not a made-to-order blazer. You do not need to be “challenged.” You hear it all the time: “I want someone who challenges me.” This is usually code for them having an impressive job or education. I get it, you want to be successful and achieve things in life. You'll do a lot more of that from a foundation of caring and support than from partnering up with a drill sergeant. If you want to be challenged, look for someone so attentive and considerate they challenge your own self-centeredness. So what if they like Nickelback? Oh, the energy you'd save if you realized similar taste in books, movies, and music is the last thing to look for in a partner. There you have it – eight harsh truths about dating from me, a former professional dater. I have to admit, dating is mysterious and it's possible I know little more about what sequence of actions cause love to land in one's life than does a cargo cult. But since I'm delivering these truths from my privileged position in a happy long-term relationship, I think I have a clear head about it. Think of me as your designated driver: More sober than you single people, but still capable of crashing us into a light pole. I'll close with this quote from Roxanne Gay, “I didn't really learn that I deserved to be loved well until I was loved well.” I hope you find the love you deserve – it may not be what you expect. In this week’s episode, Amrit interviews Kari Sutton, a researcher, educator, author, speaker and parent. She has been a teacher, Deputy Principal, Guidance Counsellor and Consultant for families for over 30 years, as well as involved with Camp Quality, a support program created specifically to help children 0 –13 years, who are dealing with their own cancer diagnosis, or the diagnosis of someone they love.Kari and Amrit dive deep into Kari’s recent book “Raising a Mentally Fit Generation” covering the ten keys for raising wellbeing within our kids. Kari has written this book after having gone through a lot of challenges. It is beautifully written, easy to read and not only is for kids, but for adults as well. If you would like to have Kari’s book and learn more about how to raise well being and resilience in your child, please go to: https://inspiredevolution.com/recommends/kari-sutton/ As parents, teachers, educators or any other important adults in kids' lives, it’s our responsibility to help them develop positive, healthy habits of mind that foster resilience and wellbeing so they can flourish and thrive. Childhood must be an unworried special time in life, enjoy and live free from stress and pressure from the increasingly competitive world we all are living in.They talk about the meaning and importance of mental fitness, the challenges we all have today evolving in fast changing social structures, why kids need boundaries and adults need to put boundaries on themselves too, and amusing things everyone can do on a daily basis to build resilience. As they go along, they cave into each chapter of her book, and have conversations about “upstairs and downstairs of the brain” as an easy concept for kids to understand what is going on, the benefits of cultivating optimism, about “The unfortunately fortunately game” and reframing the way we look at things, about the need of managing and naming emotions to tame them and about the four key places to point people to recognize strengths and purpose.Furthermore in this chapter you will learn how to connect with your kids, how your relationship can help them build resilience and understand why relationships are the cornerstone of resilience. You will have access to practical and implementable tips that will help build children's resilience, and you will understand why relationships are critical for adult resilience and positive mental health as well. Finally learn how to create a ripple effect of kindness and empathy, and discover how important it is to make the time to make memories!Level up your life with unlimited access to every Mindvalley Quest Program (over 30+ programs). All Yours. Instantly. https://inspiredevolution.com/recommends/mindvalley/About Kari Sutton:Kari Sutton is an educator, speaker and author who has helped over 25,000 children, parents, and educators with evidence- based strategies, tools and approaches to foster children's positive mental health and resilience.Research, writing, speaking and consulting work reflect her expertise in early childhood development, positive psychology, early childhood education and developmental cognitive neuroscience. Kari is driven to change the conversation about how we promote good mental health in children. She wants to help turn around the alarming statistics about depression, anxiety disorders, and suicide affecting an entire generation. She spends her time raising awareness about how adults can improve children’s mental fitness and resilience by speaking at conferences, workshops and public forums as well as through her blogs, articles, books and book chapters, and her white papers. Kari is the author of Raising Generation XXL and her recent book Raising a Mentally Fit Generation. “My dream is to one day put one of my books in each of the newborn bags at the hospital” Tune In: Welcome Kari Sutton to the Inspired Evolution!: (00:00:00)About mental fitness: (00:04:08)Despression, anxiety, self harm, and suicide as well is impacting children more and more in the last 15 years. Children need the skills to develop their mental muscles and positive mental health in wellbeing. They need skills, attitudes and mindsets that allow them to flexibly adapt to both challenges and opportunities.“We are not giving children the skills to develop positive mental health in wellbeing”Evolving as a society in social structures: (00:05:50)The world is changing every day and very fast. Technology plays a big part in all of this. Kids use more and more electronic devices which makes the world come into our homes in a whole wild variety of ways. These kids, now more than ever, must be conscious about what is feeding their minds.“We have to be better at taking care of our own well being than when we were growing up” Resilience piece around boundaries: (00:07:13)Kids thrive better with boundaries. Adults must put boundaries on themselves too and not chronically go out and rescue them. The more you protect them, the less resilient they will be. Kids need to fail and know it is alright to do so. Your job is to hold them in a supportive space. Dive in and discover three simple things you can do every day to build resilience!“Kids need to be able to sit with disappointment, actually knowing that failing is ok”Optimum age to be learning things to face resilience: (00:11:56)From 0 to 8 kids are like sponges, they take everything in and there is no critical filter. Adults must be very careful with language and all what they say, because it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. “It is about how we live our lives, how we model these behaviours, and what we can do for our children”Describing the metaphor “upstairs and downstairs floors of the brain” (Chapter 1, Teaching Brain Basics): (00:16:58)Kari uses a fun and easy concept for kids to understand what she is talking about. She draws a brain to teach and explain. The upstairs part is where your thinking brain lives, the downstairs part is where your feeling brain lives and they both are connected. Cave in and see what happens when the downstairs brain takes over or when the stairs connecting the two no longer work.“Upstairs and downstairs is an easy concept for kids to understand what is going on”Benefits from cultivating optimism (Chapter 2, Cultivating optimism): (00:23:28)The book is based on tenets of positive psychology, and optimism and pessimism are explanatory styles. Developing an optimistic explanatory style in adults and kids helps them set goals, look to the future and make everything worthwhile.“When you have optimism, there is more hope”About “The unfortunately fortunately game”: (00:27:27)Kari refers to a fantastic quote by Alfred Wainwright: “There's no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing”. Life is about how you look and reframe things. It is all about always looking for the silver lining.“Always create hope”Kids and adults managing emotions (Chapter 3, Managing emotions): (00:32:05)According to Dan Siegel, you must name emotions to tame them. Kari talks about emotional intelligence, which is self awareness and self management, both heart of emotional well being and psychological well being. Tune in and discover how to label your emotions and manage your actions to external events and strong feelings without aggressive behaviour“Name emotions to tame them”Kids capacity in having emotional intelligence: (00:35:46)Dive in and discover a beautiful and most fun way Kari teaches kids to recognize their emotions and work on them!“That is what your brain looks like when downstairs is in control”About feelings which are acceptable and behaviours that are not: (00:39:07)Love and acceptance must be for all children. Bad behaviour can be changed and kids can learn .There is a space between stimulus and response. This space gives them the choice in how to respond. “I will love the child and accept the child no matter what”Doubling down on strengths (Chapter 4, Recognizing people’s strengths): (00:43:00)Every single one of us is unique. We all have come to this world with something that is only ours. Tap-into that and reveal why you are here. In this episode you will find out the four key places Kari and Amrit point people to identify strengths and uncover their purpose in life. Strengths are a positive resource a child will have for their entire life“We each have a song to sing”The importance of making friends (Chapter 5, Making friends): (00:50:19)We become healthier enhancing social connections. Kids need to know how to get along with other people. They need to socialize like everyone else otherwise life will be difficult. “Relationships are the cornerstone of our well being”Encouraging kindness and empathy into connections (Chapter 6, Encouraging kindness and empathy): (00:52:54)Kindness is one of the most powerful things one can have. It even increases self-esteem. We need to create a ripple effect of kindness! In regards to empathy, when you see another person suffering, you might be able to instantly put yourself in their shoes and feel sympathy for what they are going through and even help.“If you can chose to be anything, chose to be kind”Kids modelling actually what they see (Chapter 7, Fostering gratitude): (00:56:15)Children learn by watching everyone around them, especially their parents. The whole idea is to train parents to foster kind and empathetic habits in their kids. These habits will be carried within their souls for the rest of their lives. There are many ways to show kindness. Discover in this episode how you can help your children be helpful this christmas or help people having a bad time through Foodbank Australia.“We are modelling the behaviour they will have for the rest of their lives”A chapter in disguise about the growth mindsets (Chapter 8, Learning to fail): (01:02:39) In this chapter discover the importance of letting your kids experience failure“I don’t use the word failing, I use the first attempt in learning”Working on self mastery at a young age (Chapter 9 Working on self mastery): (01:08:56)Children need to know they can do things themselves. As parents and educators we must give them the time to do so. “As educators and parents allow kids to experience self mastery”About making memories together: (01:10:46)Kari was inspired and moved by kids from Camp Quality and her friend Bronnie Ware’s book to finish her book with “making memories”.Dive in and listen to Kari’s most beautiful and touching words about why she ended her book this way. These words are profoundly motivating and for sure will help you create special moments for your children to look back and remember them. They will hold on to these moments for the rest of their lives! “Make the time to make memories”Kari Sutton’s books:“Raising a Mentally Fit Generation” by Kari Sutton: https://amz.run/46Uu “Raising Generation XXL” by Kari Sutton Mentioned resources:Camp Quality: https://www.campquality.org.au/ Jordan Peterson: https://www.jordanbpeterson.com/about/ Brené Brown: https://brenebrown.com/about/ If you would like to help people having a bad time in Australia, please go to Foodbank Australia: https://www.foodbank.org.au/ Sir. According to a CNBC/Change Research poll, most voters in six swing states don't consider either Trump or Biden as 'mentally fit' to be president. But can anyone be mentally fit to do the impossible? The US Presidency has been warped into something it wasn't ever intended to be. The President was never intended to try to "run" America, let alone the entire world! Both are impossibilities, and no degree of 'mental fitness' can make either one possible.

Today’s episode is all about being physically, mentally, and emotionally fit in tech. Steve Mescon — former gaming industry professional — now experiments with, invests in, and supports a wide range of performance-enhancing products and companies; he joins the show to talk about optimizing performance. From stem cells to psychedelics, follow us down the rabbit hole… Welcome to the Tony Wong podcast!   IMPORTANT NOTE: This interview and associated content are in no way an endorsement or recommendation that anyone should do Ketamine, Psilocybin, DMT, or any other illegal drugs — there is nothing you cannot achieve or do on your own through dedicated self-improvement, meditation, or spiritual practices.   Key Takeaways [:09] Tony introduces today’s guest, Steve Mescon, who spent over 10 years at Riot Games, most recently as the General Manager for North American publishing at Riot Games.   Being a visible person [4:57] Steve touches on why he agreed to come on the podcast and what skills he is aiming to develop on his journey to becoming a more public-facing person.   30,000 simple tricks! [7:59] Steve worked his way from 420 to 184 pounds without any medical intervention. He uses a backpack metaphor to explain how he managed this impressive feat, with all of its ups and downs and getting lost in the process.   What is the first trick then?  [12:40] Steve had help from a bit of an OCD personality, but the first trick is to never stop going for your goal. Change the path, the approach, the angle, the tools, and iterate but don’t stop.   Determination and separation [15:29] Tony speaks of his late Navy Seal mentor as well as what he learned from martial arts in terms of embracing discomfort as part and parcel of any journey that leads to growth.   Fixating is common in tech [18:00] Ron talks about his own mechanism for achieving long-term life goals — stacking and restacking dominoes — he also touches on how he deals with failures. He does caution that there is such a thing as too goal-driven!   Ron’s dogs chime in on this fixation thing [ 20:41] Woof.   Try them all [21:45] Steve, as a figure of speech, has tried ALL diets… he speaks to what works for him. Calorie counting, low carbs, Keto, Paleo, and finally Whole 30, which was his best all-around feel-good diet but was way too impractical to live in society with.   Tony’s challenge! [24:17] Peptides, stem cell therapy, Infrared lasers, or 48- or 72-hour fast, the guys will choose one at the end of the episode!   Infrared or roasting? [25:14] At Ron’s behest, Steve explains what infrared and near-infrared devices are and are purported to do, as well as how their use has personally impacted his life. Tony jumps in with his own experience with autoimmune responses to food and how the use of an infrared sauna has helped him tackle this issue.   (bis) IMPORTANT NOTE: This interview and associated content are in no way an endorsement or recommendation that anyone should do Ketamine, Psilocybin, DMT, or any other illegal drugs — there is nothing you cannot achieve or do on your own through dedicated self-improvement, meditation, or spiritual practices.   Micro... and other dosings [33:40] Steve talks about how the controlled and less controlled use of psychedelics has helped him broaden his range of personal and social understanding and goals, being more present, having more empathy, opening his mind, etc. — plus, you know, fun! He also speaks to the future of psychedelic use being freer and safer as science works to bridge the knowledge gap previously created by restriction and fear.   Ron was raised to think psychedelics are super scary; he shares the story of when his daughter broke her arm in Hawai’i and how her long-seated depression was staved off when they used Ketamine to set her arm.   Ayahuasca [43:17] Steve shares a brief summary of his first terrifying, explosive, fast-paced journey with a DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine) breakthrough and the rebuilding the index of self that followed.   Stem cell therapy [49:45] Steve shares his love story with stem cell therapy and the varied experiences he’s had with them — so far he’s had injections in his wrist, his back, his knee, as well as an infusion of exosomes. The sources for the stem cells have varied from his own fat tissue to exosomes from embryonic tissue.   Ron and Steve talk about the regulatory process that seems to lag behind the research — maybe even too far behind at this point — into biohacking and transhumanism as well as how this research and access can progress within the existing political, ethical and moral parameters.   Wrap up and challenges! [1:01:36] The discussion turns towards fecal matter transplant and the opportunity for a startup!   Tony’s challenge: peptides (BPC-157).   Steve’s challenge: 48-hour fast, maybe with a few expletives.   Ron’s challenge: peptides.   Thanks for tuning in.   Mentioned in this episode Riot Games Cyton Labs Michael Pollan Ketamine Psilocybin DMT Exosome Unnatural selection CRISPR BPC-157   Books The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, by Michael Pollan How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us about Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence, by Michael Pollan   More about our guest Steve Mescon on LinkedIn Steve Mescon on Twitter   More about your hosts Podcast: tonywongpodcast.com Agile Coaching: Agiletony.com Executive Coaching: Agiletony.com/mental-and-emotional-agility Twitter: Twitter.com/agile_tony LinkedIn: Linkedin.com/in/tonywongdigitalonion Youtube: Youtube.com/channel/UCJyT0C_nrzAZ9GhmOXaSRRw Co-host Ron Williams on LinkedIn: Linkedin.com/in/ronwilliams

Leaders love to see progress. But growth brings a whole new set of problems. You may find yourself stuck in reaction mode, feeling more like a fireman than a leader. Dealing with problems all day can drain your mental energy. After awhile, you may have no bandwidth left for vision and strategy.    After more than 40 years in business, we’ve learned how to lead a fast-growing business and maintain time for critical thinking. We call it staying mentally FFIT.    With this simple system, you’ll have greater mental clarity than ever before. You will stay out of reaction mode and keep your focus on innovation. Rather than feeling exhausted when you think about work, you’ll be energized by new possibilities. Try it, and get back in front of the change curve again!     Here’s a preview of this episode.    Why you must have a regular practice of intentional thought.  Why scheduled “think time” doesn’t always work.  Why your business demands a shift from doing to thinking.  One solid way to bake think time into your life.  How thought time gives your business an edge.  The kinds of questions you should be asking of yourself and business.  Why you need to be uninterrupted during your focused thought time.  Can focused thought be done with others, or only alone?  How outside input fuels your thought life.  The value of physical activity in activating your thought life.  Why serendipitous breakthroughs are not enough to fuel your business.  The simple practice that will help you think more intentionally.  Practical advice for people who have trouble writing down their thoughts.  The difference between reflective thinking and reactive thinking.  How the Hustle Fallacy inhibits your ability to think critically.  What critical thinking is and why it matters in your business.  The cause-and-effect chain from a leader’s thoughts to business results.  How asking different questions can transform your business results.  Once you’ve listened to this episode, here’s your next step. Ask yourself this simple question: What is my biggest obstacle to frequent, focused, intentional thinking, and what can I do about it?    You’ll be well on your way to solving that—and many other—problems.    Tell Us What You Think   We love reading your reactions to Lead to Win on iTunes.
