I think this is true for all of us. We fear change. We get comfortable whether we have a good habit or a bad habit. It's more comfortable to stay in whatever habit you're in than to create new habits. That's why I invited my next guest onto the show, Meridith Elliott Powell. Mentally Fit EP began in 2014 with a collective vision to flip mental illness on its head; to create conversation about mental health and to focus on wellbeing and what is in our control. A group of 'go-getters' came together to create magic. Some of the key players being Kirsty Traeger, Angela Cordon, Jo Clark, Ash Lawrie, Penny Will, Leonie Green, Sue Berry and some of the Port Lincoln Rotary Club members. It started out as an idea to hold a Gala Ball to raise funds to run a program to empower people to take charge of their lives by educating, reducing stigma and up-skilling community members. The "Life is a Circus" Gala Ball was held in October, 2014, at the Port Lincoln Race Course. 10 years later, Mentally Fit EP follows the same vision and goals. The program organises and conducts workshops, this Podcast, community forums, guest speaking roles, courses, events and campaigns, among other things. Enjoy the trip down memory lane as Mick Traeger, Ash Lawrie, Lain and Emma chat about the last 10 years. What a journey! We give special mention to Kirsty Traeger and Jo Clark who are now no longer with us, earthside, but well and truly in our hearts. If you are concerned about someone who is struggling and finding it difficult to see their way out of mental challenges then we highly recommend Question. Persuade. Refer. So, let's talk about your mental readiness to get healthy… Since we are in January, that also means that it is New Year's resolution season again. And in my ten years of experience as an attending physician, I've heard countless people say “This year, I want to be healthier.” But really, most of those people lose track of their New Year's resolutions around February and March. That raises the question: Are you really mentally ready to get healthy? Because getting healthy is not going to happen overnight; it is a process that involves many steps and may take a long time. So join me in this episode as I help you answer that question, and enlighten you about the true essence of setting goals for yourself. Why you need to check this episode: Why do you need to get rid of the New Year's resolution setup in setting goals for your health? What are the steps on how to become mentally fit to get healthy? Why you should always consider and celebrate the steps and processes that you need to do to achieve your goal of getting healthy? “A lot of times, our issue is that we're so focused on the end goal that we don't think about the processes leading up to that end goal.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Notable Quotes: “Have a good enough reason so that when the obstacle that can get you in trouble, that can knock you off of your destination… comes around, you can trace back and say ‘Remember the why.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “Yes, the obstacle may come. Yes, it may knock you down. But your ‘why' needs to be strong enough to get you back up.” – Dr. Berry Pierre “If you are going for the stars, and not having the steps and processes to get there, you are going to be frustrated that you don't get the goal.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com  to join the mailing list. If we lack the mental fortitude to tackle stressful situations head-on, stress can wreak havoc on our well-being. Building up our mental and emotional reserves is essential for navigating such challenges successfully. Through the cultivation of both mental and physical strength, we enhance our resilience, empowering us to conquer life's hurdles with confidence.Engaging in regular exercise not only offers immediate relief from anxiety but also nurtures a lasting shield against stress and anxiety's detrimental effects. By consistently engaging in physical activities, we develop valuable coping mechanisms and techniques for regulating our emotions, equipping us to confront life's trials more effectively. Training our nervous system to exhibit resilience and to swiftly recover becomes attainable through self-care practices and calming strategies.Jenn Zerling, also known as "JZ," stands as a Fitness and Age Management Expert, as well as a devoted mother of two. Today's guest, BJ Gaddour, has mastered both areas. BJ went from being a pudgy kid to being named one of the 100 Fittest Men of All Time. He's also the former fitness director of Men's Health Magazine and the author of the book Your Body is Your Barbell. BJ started training with the same goals many of us had: To get stronger and look good in the mirror. There's nothing wrong with that approach. But fitness is so, so much more than that. BJ learned that the hard way. He could lift 500 pounds but couldn't do a lunge or a single pullup. His body disobeyed him, even though he was strong as a bull. He's since molded himself into a primer on increasing muscle mass, getting stronger, and being more agile than ever. More importantly, he found that being mentally fit is as important as being shredded. In today's episode, he shares his advice on how to train as you're getting older, the importance of leaving ego aside in every aspect of your life, how he took agency over his mental state, and much more. Key Takeaways with BJ Gaddour Negativity can fuel you to achieve your goals. But there's a better way. How BJ recovered after two years filled with traumatic events. It's OK to push yourself, in work or fitness, but give yourself a breather from time to time. Avoiding uncomfortable emotions is the worst thing you can do. Do this instead. Don't jump out of bed checking on social media. Find out how BJ primes himself in the morning to have a kickass day. To succeed, revel in the success of other people. You don't need a gym for a killer workout. Learn how to squeeze in one wherever you are. Want to test your mobility? Try out BJ's Turkish Getup test. Lori Vallow has been found Mentally Fit to Stand Trial! Lori Vallow, who is accused of killing her children, is scheduled to be arraigned next week and will begin trial in early 2023 From WIkipedia:  Tylee Ashlyn Ryan (September 24, 2002 – c. September 9, 2019)[a] and Joshua Jaxon "J. J." Vallow (May 25, 2012 – c. September 23, 2019)[b] were two American children from Chandler, Arizona, who disappeared in September 2019 and were found dead in June 2020 in Rexburg, Idaho. Tylee was last seen alive at Yellowstone National Park on September 8, 2019. Her younger brother, J.J., was last seen alive on September 23, 2019, at Rexburg's Kennedy Elementary School. He was initially reported missing by relatives concerned about not only the children from whom they had not heard in weeks, but also several other suspicious incidents. In November 2019, police questioned the children's mother, Lori Vallow Daybell, about the children's whereabouts and welfare. Lori and her new husband, Chad Guy Daybell, claimed that J.J. was staying with family friend Melanie Gibb in Arizona, where they had lived before moving to Idaho in early September 2019. When police reached Gibb by phone, she told police that Joshua was not with her and had not been there for several months. More than a week later, Gibb called police saying that both Lori and Chad had asked her to lie to police about J.J.'s whereabouts but she refused. Police efforts to locate J.J. led to the discovery that Tylee was also missing. If you like Dark Side Of - Be sure to search and subscribe to "Dark Side Of" wherever you download podcasts!
