A heartfelt, creative reunion nearly 30 years in the making. This week, I rewind the clock and reconnect with my former high school art teacher and longtime creative inspiration, Orlando Leyba. Nearly three decades after our time together at the Cambridge School of Weston, we dive into a conversation that's filled with laughter, wisdom, and a deep sense of gratitude. Orlando wasn't just as a teacher, but as a true mentor — someone who saw the creative spark in me when I was a lost, rebellious 16-year-old trying to find my place in the world back in 1990. His belief in me, and the wild, wonderful community at CSW, helped change the course of my life. Together, we dive into the magic of making art (and mistakes), why creativity matters now more than ever, and the challenges today's students face in a world full of distractions like social media. Orlando reflects on decades spent nurturing creativity (and some wild student art projects!) and offers grounded, heartfelt advice for anyone—at any age—looking to rediscover the joy of making things with their hands. There's nostalgia, vulnerability, and a reminder that playful experimentation has a place in every stage of life. Takeaways to consider: Art is essential for healing and connection: Creativity isn't just a hobby—it's a lifeline in a world that can feel chaotic and disconnected.Creativity begins with permission to play (and fail!): Perfection isn't the goal—experimentation, joy, and starting over are how true breakthroughs happen.Community (and great teachers) matter: The people who believe in us, celebrate our quirks, and encourage our wild ideas can change the trajectory of our lives.

I'm definitely interested in giving it a shot, but don't really know where to start. Any advice or info is greatly appreciated! @punchypotteryI know you've had episodes about teaching online workshops, and Becca's talked about going other places to teach, but have you ever done an episode about hosting workshops in your own studio? I know it's something the Beale's, JH Pottery, and even Danny Meisinger do. I'm both an Art Teacher and potter of over 8 years and I have a larger home studio now, so I'd like to start teaching my own classes. I'm looking for advice on getting started, what classes work well for others, marketing, how much to charge, and just all the things. I'm planning to start hosting handbuilding classes and private throwing lessons first until I know there's an interest before I invest in more wheels. @anniemargieceramicsSponsorsL&L Kilns - The durable kiln that potters trust to fire evenly & consistently. This is the second post in a series of stories weaving Principles and Elements of Design, with Life and/or Spirituality. If you are interested in reading the first post, you can do that here. Over the course of my career as a K-4 Art Teacher, and later an Independent Illustrator, I have come to wonder if the principles and elements of good design are an inroad into feeling less confused about why the world looks the way it does. The Art Ministry story series is my attempt to share these ideas with you. They are longer posts, but it is my hope you will find them worthwhile to dig into. I should also add, these stories are true (as I perceived them.) Please consider sharing thoughts, or sharing with friends and loved ones. Warmly, Becca

Amy Tilton couldn't take it anymore. The incessant emails. The infiltration of politics. The unkind words from parents. So when she realized her job as an elementary school art teacher had become something vastly different than what she had signed up for six years prior, Amy concocted an exit strategy. It was a quiet strategy, but it speaks loudly about who Amy is, what she stands for, and the impact she wants to make on the Seacoast. In today's conversation from my makeshift studio in Portsmouth, the Seacoast's beloved community art teacher and I discuss the following: Intro + storytime (00:00) Amy Tilton's Seacoast Story (04:36) Amy lifetime of traveling (08:25) Amy's art background (13:05) Challenges of teaching in 2024 (16:34) Amy's dumpster diving prowess (26:13) The power of community (32:19) Rebellion against the 21st century (35:52) Why art matters (48:28) What's your mission? Unlock the secrets of fostering a deep, enduring connection between children and the environment through the power of art and nature. Join me, Dr. Lisa Richardson-Hassler, as I talk with Jenna Saulo, researcher and art educator from Roots Nature and Leadership Academy. Together, we explore the integration of natural elements into art education, transforming urban classrooms into fertile grounds for environmental stewardship and creative investigation. With Jenna's pioneering methods, students are not just learning about ecosystems and sustainability but experiencing them through a sensory-rich curriculum steeped in playfulness and discovery.Take a stroll through the urban wilderness of education with us as we dissect how the intertwining of art and ecology can inspire wonder and responsibility in young minds. I share transformative education strategies that leverage students' innate curiosity, blending art with nature to foster ecological thinking in every subject. Our conversation showcases how tangible, everyday materials can become powerful educational tools, connecting students with their local community and environment. Hear tales of how butterfly pea lemonade, tadpoles, and even a live tortoise can turn a classroom into an unforgettable learning adventure. Finally, we celebrate the triumphs of educators who are making a significant impact on students' lives. I invite you to share your own success stories, emphasizing the crucial role of community in nurturing educational practices. Margo is joined by elementary school art teacher Faigie Kobre. Faigie uses a choice based method called TAB (teaching for artistic behavior) and has recently developed a program for schools called Beyond Copycat Crafts that helps other teachers aid in how to give children developmentally appropriate, creative art instead of copycat, cookie cutter crafts. Faigie also has taught adult creativity through mixed media and alcohol inks. She teaches the difference between creativity and artistic ability and how our own thoughts on this subject likely stems from our childhood experiences. Topics discussed: [02:53] How a business course unexpectedly sparked creativity in Faigie [08:34] Why she was initially rejected from a coaching program and how taking initiative changed her coaches mind [12:02] How perfectionism stifles creativity; art is problem-solving. [21:04] How and why creativity develops differently in us and when we begin to see self-doubt with our own creative abilities [22:27] How mixed media art has been both transformational and liberating for Faigie [27:39] Teaching for artistic behavior. Faigie's choice-based program that teaches drawing, collage, painting and creates an exciting learning environment for kids [31:36] Guiding kids to embrace challenges in creativity [33:11] Integration of art in education and curriculum [37:06] Teaching art concepts with freedom, not restrictions [47:49] How she got involved with alcohol inks and her course Connect with Faigie: www.eduart4kids.com www.eduart4kids.com/beyond www.instagram.com/eduart4kids https://www.pinterest.com/faigie/ https://www.facebook.com/eduart4kids/
