Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A Sunday morning sermon by Pastor Brett Deal. The other morning driving up 95, my thoughts were running about as fast as my minivan (which between you and me was probably a little too fast for useful thinking or the congested traffic). Wisely, I eased up on the pedal and put on a gospel playlist. Over the soft hum of the organ, the voice of the singer spoke the words of found in Nehemiah 8.6: “And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.” With each invitation, I found my heart singing “Amen!” This beautiful song, composed by Andrae Crouch and sung by Marvin Winans, is an invitation for all of us to step back from the hectic sprint of our minds and the hustle and bustle of our days. Every stanza and chorus is an invitation to stand with Ezra and Nehemiah and the Israelites gathered home in Jerusalem. Every line, a new chance to agree with their words of worship. Ezra blessed the Lord and the people said, “Amen!” This isn't just a long ago celebration of who God has been, but a present place of agreement for who God is right here and right now. It is also a prayer packed with hope and faith, rejoicing in who God forever will be! Here and now let us agree and say, "Amen!” Truly, if there is—and I know there is—“any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” (Philippians 2.1-4). Beloved, with the Apostle Paul, and the great cloud of witnesses, let the Church say, “Amen!”

David Pulley had a gift for songwriting long before the world knew. Growing up in a family of 11 siblings, music became an outlet for him. David was exposed to the Gospel greats, including the works of Andrae Crouch, Walter Hawkins, Richard Smallwood, and Percy Bady. Beginning at an early age, David wrote poetry that he used as a base to construct his song. Sensing a need to encourage his passions, his mother sent him and his sister to music lessons. David initially took to playing drums while his sister started playing piano, and he soon started copying what he heard his sister playing during her piano lessons. The instructor noticed this and informed his mother of his substantial progress. David graduated from his original drum lessons and started instruction on the Hammond organ. He excelled at the organ and quickly elevated to teacher's assistant, working with new students. He began playing for his home church at the age of 12.

Though the group was formed over a half-century ago, they never recorded a live album until now. We'll hear all about Phil Cook's amazing musical journey – from his youth in northern Wisconsin to his migration to North Carolina with his creative community – to pursuing his love of Gospel up close and personal. TED & SHERI After a dozen year hiatus, one of gospel music's most legendary duos, Ted & Sheri – Ted Winn and Sheri Jones-Moffet, are back together again! The Stellar Gospel Music Award winning pair has teamed up with the dazzling GRAMMY® Award nominated foursome, The Walls Group. The blend of their respective Memphis and Houston church-trained voices is nothing short of magical on the soulful retro-styled, feel-good groove, “Now I Know” (Ted & Sheri, LLC / Black Smoke). The Memphis-reared duo of Ted & Sheri first hit the national stage in 2001 with the release of the independent album, The Healing Starts Right There (Church Howze), which earned them two Stellar Gospel Music Awards. The project featured the fan favorites, “Come Ye Disconsolate,” a remake of Andrae Crouch's classic “I'll Be Thinking of You,” and the acapella tune, “Thank Him.” Their 2004 sophomore album, Celebrate, featured the Billboard Top 5 title-cut that was written for them by Donald Lawrence. The cut, “God Will Take Care,” was featured on the platinum-selling project, WOW Gospel 2005. By the end of the decade, they had amicably pursued solo careers. Sheri went on to lead “Encourage Yourself” by Donald Lawrence & the Tri-City Singers on their Billboard No. 1 smash, “Encourage Yourself,” in 2007. She followed with two solo albums for EMI Gospel / Motown Gospel that birthed radio singles such as “Shine” and “Faith to Believe.” Her debut set, Renewed (Motown Gospel) earned her a GRAMMY® Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Gospel Album in 2009. Ted launched his own recording label, Teddy's Jamz, in 2009. His solo debut album, Balance (Teddy's Jamz), appeared soon after with radio hits such as “God Believes in You,” “Moving Forward,” and the Top Ten smash, “The Lifter.” His 2017 album, Stand in Awe (Teddy's Jamz), featured four radio singles, including the Top 10 smash, “Grateful,” which featured the dynamic vocals of song stylist, Maranda Curtis. In 2021, Ted & Sheri reunited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first release last year by partnering with Black Smoke Music Worldwide to release their first album in nearly two decades. The music video for their first offering, “God Can Heal It,” has racked up over a half million YouTube views. Their as yet untitled album will release later in 2022.

We were all given a gift, however how you choose to use yours is your decision to make and NOT God's. You can: abuse it waste it curse it sit down on it and make excuses wishing you had somebody else's not use it etc. The facts are this, you don't have much time on this earth and someone is waiting on you to obey God on the other side of your obedience to Him. We are human beings, not human doings. God made us to be. To be ourselves. To be in the moment. To be with Him. And that's enough. Sometimes you start something for the right reason, but before long it has turned on you and now you're caught in the trap of doing what you were doing, only now it's for the wrong reason. What started as a positive now is draining the life right out of you. For instance, have you ever posted something online to encourage or help your followers but before long you find yourself only looking at the views, likes and follows? That's what happened to me last week and here is how I handled it. The song we use in this episode was "Give It All Back To Me" by Andrae Crouch. We don't own any rights. In the 1980's and 1990s, he was known as the “go to” producer for superstars who sought a gospel choir sound in their recordings, appearing on a number of recordings including Michael Jackson's “Man in the Mirror”, Madonna's “Like a Prayer”, and “The Power”, a duet between Elton John and Little Richard. He even collaborated on some of his recordings with artists, such as Stevie Wonder, El Debarge, and Sheila E just to name a few. The most popular songs by Andrea Crouch with his group The Disciples are “The Blood Will Never Loose it's Power”. “Bless His Holy Name”, “Soon and Very Soon, “Jesus is the Answer”, “My Tribute”, and “Through It All”. After The Disciples in 1979, Crouch continued on with a solo career. Let's talk about Andrae's song through it all and what inspired him to write it. Andrae said, “I got message, and it was from a little guy name Albi Pearson. He said, Andrae, the Lord told me that you're going through something.”The message that Albi Pearson gave inspired Andrae to write his song. The more I live and the more I learn, I understand and feel the lyrics of Andrae's song, “Through It All”. Through It All! I've learned to trust in Jesus. I've learned to trust in God.Andrae Crouch left us, but he left us with great memories of music. I'm your host Gail Nobles, and you're listening to a show about The Gospel Greats.
