I've been wanting to have 7Song on the podcast for a really long time now, so it was exciting to finally get to sit and chat with him. 7Song is well known for his work in first aid and disaster relief, and our conversation touched on many different aspects of this work. People often want to help when there's been a natural disaster like a hurricane, wildfire, or flooding, and 7Song shared some of his best tips on how herbalists can help, along with some of his favorite herbs to have on hand for first aid situations. One specific health situation 7Song discussed was smoke inhalation due to wildfires – sadly, something that has become all too common these days. He gave his number one tip for what to do if you're exposed to wildfire smoke (hint: it has nothing to do with herbs!) and shared his guide on Smoke Inhalation and Herbal Medicine with us. You can download your copy of this fantastic handout here: https://bit.ly/4m3DqoeBy the end of this episode, you'll know:► How 7Song got involved with herbal first aid and disaster relief► The five most common health issues 7Song deals with when giving first aid at large gatherings► What herbalists can do to help with disaster relief – and more importantly, what NOT to do!► How herbs can help your body recover from smoke inhalation► and so much more…For those of you who don't know him, 7Song has long been entranced by the non-human natural world, especially herpetology and botany. He also wants to be helpful in the human community, and herbal medicine feels like a good marriage of these two interests. He is the director and main teacher of the Northeast School of Botanical Medicine, which he started in 1992. He is the Director of Holistic Medicine and a practicing clinic herbalist at the Ithaca Free Clinic, an integrated free clinic that includes both conventional and less-conventional modalities. He is one of the clinic's founders, which opened its doors in 2006. My guest this episode is 7Song, a renowned (humbly) western herbalist and teacher. I was his student many years ago when I took the 8 month program at his school, The Northeast School of Botanical Medicine. Today we discussed the importance of herbal medicine in a modern medicine world. We discussed depression and adrenal fatigue as both  are in some cases an over, rather than under, stimulation of the nervous system which is a very important distinction if you are going to treat them. And we walked listeners through how to begin engaging with herbal medicine if this episode inspires an interest. I was so pleased to be able to grab 7Song for this conversation. You can reach out to him for care via the Ithaca Free Clinic either in person or virtually. All appointments are free (caveat since it is volunteer run, don't expect a quick and efficient scheduling experience). Resources:Follow 7Song on instagram @7songsevensong and Facebook facebook.com/sevensong.sevensongThe Northeast School of Botanical Medicine: 7song.comInfo about herbalist Micheal Moore HEREFlower Power Herb Shop in NYC: flowerpower.netCramp Bark: here*Jamaican Dogwood: here*High quality resource for buying bulk herbs and preparations: MountainRoseHerbs.com

'Words of Life' w/ Pastor Mark D. Ingram

This week's 'Words of Life' in lieu of eternity...'Directions' - a path one follows or an action implemented based upon instructions provided. My high school students follow a specific set of directives which I provide, to guide them with inserting a sterile needle into one of 3 veins within the antecubital fossa, which allows a safe, efficient and proficient venipuncture attempt with their peers.Without the purposed intent of following my provided instructions, each would readily admit: "Mr. Ingram, I am lost and don't how and I certainly don't know the way to get to where I need to be - prior to my phlebotomy certification exam."Thomas exhibited a similar transparent honesty (to Jesus) as they were stunned by His preparing them for His departure. Yet, Jesus not only reassured them, He also gave them directions with a proper set of instructions to guide them to where they would eventually be eternally. Are we like Thomas in that we can readily admit: "do I truly know the ONLY safe route to eternity or am I wandering along aimlessly, still being 'lost' in the process?"DIRECTIONSJohn 14:5-7Song of the Week - Heavens Open Wide feat. If you are not yet familiar with the work of Guido Masé, hopefully this interview will serve as a worthy introduction to this man's genius and contribution to the world of herbalism. For two hours non-stop, Guido eloquently delivers plant lore and science, useful insights into myriad systems and processes, and priceless life wisdom. The world of herbal medicine was inculcated in Guido by plant and mushroom foraging treks with his father and family during his formative years in the Italian Alps. Eventually settling in Vermont, he was inspired by renowned herbalists such as Rosemary Gladstar and 7Song. Today Guido is the chief herbalist at Urban Moonshine, which specializes in liquid herbal extracts with a focus on digestive bitters, herbal tonics, and everyday health remedies. Through the Urban Moonshine Herb School, he provides online herbal education. Guido is also author of The Wild Medicine Solution, an incredible book filled with folklore, science, recipes, and practical uses of bitter, aromatic, and tonic herbs. Just like the swift runner that Guido is, he covers so much ground in this episode, including his observations with running and homeodynamics; folklore, mythology, and fairy tales related to herbal medicine; integrative health in Africa and Maasai medicine; cultural influences; writing; bitters, tonics, and aromatics; and consciousness. Guido is a deeply engaging speaker with a profound passion for plants and biology in general, and he effortlessly weaves tales of science and myth into a profoundly nourishing and educational conversation. It was my absolute honour to sit in his presence for this worthy discussion, and it brings me great pleasure to be able to offer it to you. After a ten year run of success as a small brand herbal product maker, Giving Tree Botanicals, as which she grew, gathered and processed hundreds of species of medicinal plants in the gardens, meadows, forests and farm houses of Vermont, for her tincture line, Heather took a leap of faith and moved to Boston Massachusetts. Here she sees herself delving more fully into leading herbal education services for herb students, consumers and health care practitioners, reaching more people and deepening her knowledge of the science of herbalism. Her personal approach to herbal learning is guided by the wisdom and experience of herbalists and other inquirers who came before and invested in focusing on new information which may help us postulate about how herbs work and help us answer some of the trickier questions in herbalism. She has taught several for-credit classes in Herbalism after being invited on as part time faculty in the Wellness and Alternative Medicine major at Johnson State College in Vermont and she leads the class, 'Medicinal Actions & Chemistry' for first year students at The Vermont Center for Integrative Herbalism, a school she was a student of in its first years of operation starting in 2007. Although herbalists have been first responders in emergency situations since civilization begun, the newest resurgence in herbalists serving side by side with EMTs in large scale festival first aid tents has largely been due to 7Song's work. He has published protocols for public consumption on herbal first aid and the results are revolutionary. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dr. Neubauer is a naturopathic physician, was a medical coordinator at the Berkeley Free Clinic, has worked extensively with Natural Doctors International, and has studied with Karen Sanders, Michael Moore and Adam Seller. A “calling,” according to Paul, is something that “when you’re doing it, the universe conspires to make you succeed.” Paul and Tania, along with herbalist 7Song (Northeast School of Botanical Medicine), are leading a delegation to the island of Ometepe in Nicaragua. This trip is open to anyone, no matter what your herbal or language background. It is an amazing opportunity for those who want herbal clinical experience. Paul and Tania discuss this opportunity in great detail, however, this interview will be of interest to everyone, as Paul discusses what a calling is, and some tips for those who might be interested in being a clinical herbalist. It’s a fascinating look at the state of herbalism from someone how has been doing this for nearly 40 years. I wanted to get this interview out for 2 reasons… 1) To share what I learned from Paul about finding one’s calling and 2) to spread the word about this trip, which will help a lot of people get quality, natural medical help.
