What if growing food was never meant to be about just the end product? What are we missing from conventional agriculture and gardening? Steven Martyn is an Ontario based teacher and practitioner of sacred agriculture and what he terms wildculturing. He focusses on the traditional living skills of growing food, building and healing and has a unique take on how we can live in the with the earth. Steven had me pondering how agriculture has been used to create culture historically, how we incorporate intentionality into horticulture, he even had me rethinking my morning beverage… About Steven Martyn Steven says “After passing from my body when I was 19 I saw what my life purpose was, and that I had fallen well short. I was given back my body to fulfill a very specific purpose in this life. Since that time forty some years ago I have spent my life spreading the green gospel and bringing people back to be healed by our Great Mother Earth. I spent many years teaching traditional plant use and many more de-programing colonial thinking, opening peoples minds and hearts to a sacred relationship with land, and specifically with the plant people. I practice and teach forms of sacred agriculture and “wildculturing” that our ancestors have practiced since the Paleocene, that generate such abundance the land easily feeds our family, school and friends.” Steven has more than thirty years experience living co-creatively with the Earth, practicing traditional living skills of growing food, building and healing. Steven created Livingstone & Greenbloom in 1986, Toronto's first green landscaping company. In 1996, he created the Algonquin Tea Company, North America's premiere bioregional tea company. He has given talks and run workshops internationally for more than twenty years and taught plant identification and wilderness skills at Algonquin college for 11 years, and at the Orphan Wisdom School for eight years. In 2014, Megan and Steven started the Sacred Gardener Earth Wisdom School. Steven released his first book The Story of the Madawaska Forest Garden in 2016, his second, Sacred Gardening in June 2017 and The Roundhouse in 2022. Responsible Parent Podcast: There's an herb for that pt. 2 Summary This episode is part two of a conversation with herbalist Jim McDonald about using herbs for natural nervous system regulation. Making teas: Chamomile, spearmint, lemon balm, orange peel are good choices. Tinctures can be used instead of teas, but alcohol content is minimal. Growing your own herbs: Many herbs are easy to grow at home, and some like lemon balm can be quite prolific. Using safe herbs: When using herbs, especially during pregnancy or lactation, it's important to research potential interactions and consult with a qualified herbalist, not just a medical doctor. Learning about herbs: There are many resources available for learning about herbs, but be sure to choose reliable sources from experienced herbalists. Wildcrafting herbs: Burdock root is a good example of a wildcrafted herb. When wildcrafting, it's important to find safe locations away from roads and potential contaminants. Books by Samuel Thayer are recommended as a good resource for learning about foraging for edible wild plants. Key takeaways Herbs can be a safe and natural way to support your nervous system. There are many ways to use herbs, including teas, tinctures, and culinary applications. It's important to learn about herbs before using them, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Today on Mushroom Hour we are excited to chat with internationally renowned wild foods expert, wilderness skills teacher and founder of “Rural Courses”, Michael White. Michael caught the foraging bug young and early experiences of loading sheep feed buckets full of field fungi and eating them piled high on buttered toast, sentenced Michal to a life dedicated to the hunt! Foraging for plants and fungi rubbed shoulders with hunting, fishing, and farming to the extent that eating from the land became his norm and to buy from the shops an uneasy extravagance. Four years in London studying classical singing was enough to confirm that city life, or that of an opera singer was not for him and on graduating he flung himself into almost total self-sufficiency.  Skills learned in childhood became essential tools for putting food on the table and driven by necessity, his foraging abilities improved rapidly. In his early 20's Michael began teaching foraging and self-sufficiency skills. This side of life has grown into a new passion, taking him into cities, other countries, schools, but mostly the forest, to inspire and educate thousands of people about the awesome word of fungi, foraging and life on the land. Currently life is very full for Michael raising three children, teaching, expanding his understanding about medicinal mushrooms and living off the land. His greatest pleasure is to share knowledge and a love of the natural world with his son and two daughters and the fantastic people he meets through courses and workshops.    TOPICS COVERED:      Kent's Wild Food Landscape   The Decision to Start Educating Others in the Wild    Life in the Wilds Takes Work!   Reclaiming Power through Rewilding   Foraging as a State of Mind   Diverging from Modernity    How do Foraging and Wildcraft Practices Change Social Cohesion?    Educating Children about Nature   Culinary Inspiration from Foraged Fare   Medicinal Properties of Plants & Fungi    Wild Beer, Wine and Spirits   Hunting and Working with Game    Starting the Path to Self-Sufficiency    Dangers of Our Experimental, Digital World   EPISODE RESOURCES:   Rural Courses Website: https://www.ruralcourses.co.uk/    Michael White IG: https://www.instagram.com/rural_courses/   Macrolepiota procera (AKA Parasol Mushroom): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macrolepiota_procera    First-Nature (Plant and Fungi ID): https://www.first-nature.com/    Family Phallacaea (AKA Stinkhorns): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phallaceae

Join us for a breath of fresh air with episode 45 of 'Eatweeds,' a podcast dedicated to celebrating the joy and richness of wild food. Our host, Robin Harford, transports us away from the bustle of daily life, inviting us to pause, reflect, and savor the exquisite moments of being at one with nature. In this special episode, Robin trades his traditional role as host to become our storyteller, bringing to life his personal essay on the pure, simple beauty of gathering Hawthorn flowers for syrup.Key topics covered include:- The art and wonder of foraging, in this case, focusing on the hawthorn.- The transformative process of wildcrafting, turning simple hawthorn flowers into a tantalizing syrup.- Embracing nature's cycles and the magic of spring when hawthorns bloom.Robin takes us on a sensory journey, painting a vivid picture of an English spring, when Hawthorn trees burst into life, their branches heavy with cream-colored blooms. As he walks us through the process of gathering these delicate blossoms, we are immersed in a fairy-tale landscape where bees dance joyously around the flowers, and the early morning dew brings a glistening freshness to the day.But this episode is about more than just the act of gathering hawthorn flowers; it's a meditative exploration of our connection to the natural world. As Robin shares his experience, we learn how foraging becomes a kind of alchemy, transforming not just the flowers into syrup, but the forager into an integral part of nature's narrative.Robin eloquently conveys the sheer joy and vitality that come from engaging directly with nature, infusing life with a rustic simplicity that's often missing in our urbanized existence. Making hawthorn syrup becomes a meaningful ritual, a way to weave nature into our everyday routines, creating an escape from emails, screens, and the never-ending scroll of modern life.In this enchanting episode of 'Eatweeds', Robin invites you to join him in saying yes to the delight of gathering Hawthorn flowers and invites you to rediscover a connection that nurtures not just our bodies, but our souls.Tune in, step out, and allow the wild to feed your spirit with Eatweeds!

We Don't “Use” Herbs

One of our habits as herbalists and teachers is to avoid the word “use” with reference to plants. We don't say “I use meadowsweet for headaches” or “I use Japanese knotweed for Lyme disease”. We don't say “I use chamomile for stomach cramps” or even “I use ginger as a stimulating diaphoretic”. And when students ask “how do you use schisandra berries?”, we stop and have a discussion about the word before we talk about the plant. If you've listened to our podcast for a while, you might have noticed this already! Why do we do it? First and foremost, we don't regard plants as “things”, anymore than we do animals or people. They are living beings and deserve respect. This is not merely a personal matter. The dominant cultural perspective which regards plants as mere resources to be exploited has visible consequences in our world. Ecosystem destruction is the major force threatening wild plant populations, and overharvesting is another top factor. Both are outgrowths of a view of plants as commodities. Changing our language is a way to change our perspective.Mentioned in this episode:Introducing the WildCheck Report (April 28, 2022) – Sustainable Herbs Programdirect link to the WildCheck Report (Schindler, C., Heral, E., Drinkwater, E., Timoshyna, A., Muir, G., Walter, S., Leaman, D.J. and Schippmann, U. 2022. Yellow leaves, undeveloped fruit, long “leggy” stems between the leaf nodes – these are some of the key signs of a plant under stress. But if you've never met this species before, you might not know something's off! Other signs are not so visible, and require you to know the plant stand for a season or a full year before you can see them. The point here is this: both observation and patience are needful to accurately assess the stress load of a plant, stand, or ecosystem.Taking the time to get to know these indicators, and to steward the land you gather from, will make you a better herbalist. Whether you're a wildcrafter, grower, clinician, product maker, or any other type of herbalist, patient observation and adaptive response are key skills, and they transfer smoothly from one domain to the others. Our Herbal Community Care Toolkit is chock full of low-cost, abundantly accessible herbs for addressing common health issues. @ArtemisAscendant joins us for this week's show!! Christa Whiteman is an adult-onset hunter, conservationist, practicing chiropractor, and clinical herbalist who shares her passion for the wild foods lifestyle she has so lovingly dedicated her life to with all manner of newcomers to the outdoors through social media, and through multiple educational outdoors organizations and mentoring opportunities. I hope you leave after listening to todays episode with a deeper sense of belonging and feeling of being welcome in whatever outdoor pursuits you have a mind to start engaging in, and how life can be enriched when its shaped by the seasons and influenced by the landscape.  One thing will be really apparent as you listen in - When our minds are focused on engaging in the outdoors as an intrinsic value that is heavily connected to someone's lifestyle, theres always something to be excited about. We quickly flow into a talk on the importance of always striving to expand your knowledge of the local and not so local landscape to provide valuable insight to listeners new to hunting or foraging on the nuances and amount and types of effort it takes to actually be successful in procurement of wild foods. Each season's peak may only be a certain month out of the calendar year, but each and every individual pursuit has year round work for us if we want to find sustainable success. We then appropriately spend some time discussing optimizing our time in the outdoors and the dedication it takes to develop a well rounded relationship with your local ecosystems. We also talk about how strong community exists in outdoors circles, the value of good mentorship in outdoor pursuits, biggest barriers to entry as adult hunters, for women, and for members of minority groups trying to get involved outdoors, social media's influences on hunting and fishing culture, and what needs to change for this type of lifestyle to evolve with the times. Tons of valuable info and great resources in the shownotes for today's talk. Please do check out @artemisascendant - her content is awesome - and hope you enjoy the show!!
