According to the Cambridge dictionary, “longevity means living for a long time or remaining popular and useful for a long time.” Of course, I would like to live a long life, as long as my loved ones anyway, and I would like to be independent and happily busy for as long as possible. We know that nutrition, exercise, sleep and wellbeing are important but is there another ingredient in this secret sauce for living with as much vitality as possible, for as long as possible?Scientific studies show that being happy and grateful has a massive positive impact on our physical health. But there is another way of thinking which can also contribute and that is being curious. According to an article by George Lee (link in notes) “by encouraging our desire to seek out new knowledge, ask questions, and explore the world around us, curiosity may help to improve our memory, reduce the risk of chronic disease, and increase our resilience in the face of stress and adversity.”Miles Spencer is, in his own words, a curious guy from Pittsburgh. His day job has been to help create over 1,100 jobs while founding, financing, building and exiting three digital media companies. Prior to that, he was a Venture Principal at Capital Express (register.com), hosted MoneyHunt on PBS (pre- SharkTank), led over 1,500 people across 14 miles of open sea on kayak, and trekked 1,100 miles through the deserts of Saudi, Jordan and Syria… and A Line in the Sand ended up an Amazon Bestseller in the Middle East.Miles joins me on the podcast to chat about his adventure and his adventurous spirit which be believes has helped him to remain vital, active and interested in life into his seventh decade. Dr. Tracy McCarthy pulls back the curtain on one of medicine's most overlooked connections: how the food on your plate directly affects your brain chemistry, mood, and overall health. Drawing from her nearly two decades of experience, this revolutionary functional medicine physician shares why she left traditional psychiatry behind after discovering that the standard pharmaceutical approach wasn't addressing why her patients were sick in the first place. What happens when our bodies remain stuck in fight-or-flight mode? Dr. McCarthy reveals how chronic stress fundamentally disrupts our ability to digest food, eliminate toxins, and repair damaged tissues—creating a cascade of health problems that no pill can fully address. She explains why slow breathing isn't just a relaxation technique but a physiological switch that activates healing. The conversation takes a fascinating dive into the inflammatory effects of processed foods, particularly those containing industrial seed oils. Dr. McCarthy explains how the imbalance between pro-inflammatory omega-6 and anti-inflammatory omega-3 fats is like "driving with the accelerator pushed to the floor without any brakes"—a vivid explanation of why so many Americans struggle with chronic inflammation and mood disorders. From practical food swaps to specific supplements that support brain health, this episode delivers actionable advice for anyone looking to improve their wellbeing. Dr. McCarthy shares personal insights about cooking for her family while maintaining health standards, proving that functional medicine isn't just theoretical—it's meant to be lived in the real world where convenience matters.Whether you're struggling with anxiety, digestive issues, or simply want to optimize your health, this conversation offers a roadmap for addressing root causes rather than just managing symptoms. In this episode of Alimentary, I have a lovely chat with a philosopher, who has spent years exploring the ethical, environmental, and social implications of our food choices. In new book Hungry, Beautiful Animals, author Matthew C. Halteman aims to transform our perception of vegan living by focusing on what it promotes rather than what it restricts. Now, I am not a vegan myself but I am concerned about our food chain and love animals so, this was a really interesting conversation. Some of the perspectives that Matthew shares, we can absolutely apply to other areas of our lives. His book is a heartfelt, humane, and humorous exploration of how going vegan has brought abundance into his life. The book is a love letter to life itself in all forms, and presents an imaginative vision of a true, beautiful, and good world that motivates and sustains our deepest desires to be well. It's not about shame and blame, but about finding joy in the journey. Matthew is professor of philosophy at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and a fellow at the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics in the UK. He is the author of Compassionate Eating as Care of Creation and co-editor of Philosophy Comes to Dinner: Arguments about the Ethics of Eating. He brings a philosopher's precision and a dog-lover's joyto explaining how human connection, humor, and forgiveness (for oneself and others) has been a part of his journey. Angiogenesis is a key factor in cancer development. Soy does not cause breast cancer; it may actually help. Nutrition education is lacking in medical training. High-quality eggs can be beneficial for health. Oats contain bioactives that promote gut health. Coffee has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. In this episode of Alimentary! I am delighted to welcome Penny Sharkey (and yes we are related!) to discuss how Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) can be used either by itself or with other therapeutic tools in therapy to support mental health and wellbeing. Penny is a professional counsellor and psychotherapist, and a member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP). She holds a First-Class Honours Degree in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy, a Degree in Social Studies, and a master's Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Currently, she works in a private practice in Celbridge and Maynooth, in Co. Kildare. From an early age, Penny developed a curiosity in how the power of human connection and the resilience of the human spirit worked. This passion was sparked by witnessing a friend struggle with severe anxiety and depression and seeing how effective therapy was in transforming their life. That experience motivated her to help others navigate their own challenges and find healing. In her practice, she strives to create a warm, accepting, and honest environment where clients feel safe to explore their feelings. Her therapeutic approach is flexible and client-centered, emphasizing empathy and tailored interventions to meet each person's unique needs. She believes in the power of active listening, congruence, and guidance to help clients discover meaning, build resilience, and achieve personal growth. She primarily works with Person-Centred Therapy, Choice Theory/Reality Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to support clients on their journey towards well-being. She said that it has been so fulfilling to work in supporting those who are seeking support, helping them find their own strength and clarity in times of distress. We prepare and think about birth a lot. Or at least I did. But postpartum? Not so much. It wasn't until after I had both my children that I even heard of a postpartum doula. A birth doula sure, but postpartum – no. Postpartum was a shocking reality slap. It was beautiful. It was messy. And it was the first time in my life that I craved more support on such a deep level. Imagine how different our world would be if new mothers had extra support and delicious nourishing meals during those first few days, weeks and months after birth? I know that my own matrescence journey would have been a little gentler with a little less nutrient depletion. How about yours? Postpartum care and nourishment are so important. So, I asked Alicia Allison, a postpartum chef, postpartum doula and herbalist, to join me on the podcast to talk about how mothers can get more nourishment postpartum. Alicia and I chat about: Bringing celebration to postpartum food How to build new postpartum traditions Why a culture of care is what mothers need Foods to eat when pregnant Healing foods postpartum Why preconception is a great time to work on holistic health The importance of agency in creating our postpartum experience Herbs to support mothers postpartum Not only is Alicia a postpartum chef, postpartum doula, and herbalist, but she is also a yoga teacher, lactation counsellor, somatic wellness practitioner. She is a pioneer and leader in postpartum nutrition. Over more than a decade of working as a postpartum chef and doula, Alicia has supported over 80 families during the fourth trimester. She created NOURISH, a program that educates and mentors home chefs and postpartum doulas to provide care to more families during those postpartum weeks and months. Alicia is dedicated to helping others heal, nurture their bodies and bring life into this world in a way that elevates our collective consciousness. Fermented foods have gained a reputation as gut-healing superfoods, but could they actually be hindering your health goals? In this episode, we're exploring the surprising side of fermented foods and why, for some people, they may do more harm than good. We'll start by breaking down what fermented foods are, from kombucha and kimchi to yogurt and sauerkraut, and why they're celebrated for supporting gut health. But we'll also discuss how, for certain individuals, these foods can trigger digestive distress, inflammation, or even exacerbate underlying gut issues. We'll go over the key signs that fermented foods might not be working for you, such as bloating, skin issues, fatigue, or worsening digestive symptoms. Most importantly, we'll share how you can approach gut healing with personalized support, exploring alternatives and finding foods that align with your unique needs. By the end of this episode, you'll have a better understanding of why some “healthy” foods aren't one-size-fits-all and how to create a gut-supportive plan that truly works for you.SEND US A QUESTION:https://www.speakpipe.com/theholistichealthpodcastFIND NAT BELOW:Website - https://nataliekdouglas.com/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/natalie.k.douglasBook a Free Assessment Call - https://NatalieKDouglas.as.me/?appointmentType=50255874EndoNourish - Endometriosis and Adenomyosis Guide - https://nataliekdouglas.com/endonourish-holistic-endometriosis-adenomyoisis-care-guide/SacredSeeds - Preconception Care Guidehttps://nataliekdouglas.com/preconception-care-guide/PCOS Wellness Guidehttps://nataliekdouglas.com/pcos-holistic-guide/Thyroid Rescue - Self guided programhttps://nataliekdouglas.com/thyroid-rescue/Coming Off The Pill/IUD Holistic Guidehttps://nataliekdouglas.com/coming-off-the-pill-mini-course/Become a one-to-one clienthttps://nataliekdouglas.com/1-1-naturopathic-nutrition-consultations/FIND AMIE BELOW:Website - https://whatthenaturopathsaid.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/thatnaturopathBook a Free Discovery Call: https://p.bttr.to/3yBdmu3Book Yourself In: https://l.bttr.to/ZDxWOFree eBook 'Is mould making you sick?' - https://www.amieskilton.com/MPYHeBookFree webinar 'The 9 subtle signs your home has a mould problem' - https://www.amieskilton.com/MPYHwebinarMouldProof Your Home eCourse - https://www.amieskilton.com/mouldproofMould Prevention 101 mini-course - https://p.bttr.to/3Cp5DkB

We also explore recent human studies demonstrating how small additions of spice blends can significantly reduce markers of inflammation, even when added to a standard Western diet.We clarify the difference between spices and herbs, highlighting that while spices come from various parts of the plant like roots, stems, seeds, and bark, and herbs are derived from leaves, both offer overlapping health benefits due to their rich polyphenol and phytochemical content. Dr. Koya shares practical tips on integrating spices into your diet by enhancing the foods you already love, starting with three to five accessible spices like turmeric (paired with black pepper), cinnamon, and others.Start now with these actionable insights into how simple meal additions can profoundly reduce inflammation, improve metabolic health, and enhance overall well-being.***Be Well Moments brings you my favorite bite-sized highlights from the season. We know that we should eat whole foods, get a good nights sleep, exercise and take some time to relax, right? So why don't we? Well there can be a myriad of reasons, but one of them may be that our cortisol is chronically high and we are in Fight or Flight, on high alert, most of the time. In this mode, we are just trying to survive the day, and so not thinking about investing in our future health. Regulating our cortisol, our stress response, is really important and manageable for all of us, with the simple habits in this episode. Healing requires you to consume more healing foods. Foods that make you feel light and alive. Learn the difference between negative energy foods and positive energy foods designed to help you heal. Food isn't just food. It can be, but it's also so much more than that. Yet, at the same time, it's nothing like what we have understood it to be. Common thought leaves you believing food can change how you look and even how you feel. In a roundabout way, it can. But your body ultimately determines the outcome you experience. Meaning the power of food is what your body makes of it. Your health is determined by what your body chooses to do with what you provide. You can't change your body. That is up to your body. But you can influence what your body does by learning how to support the body based on what it needs. Food can not change you, but it can support you.  Healing requires the support provided by food through the nourishment it contains. Healing and healing food is not a metric of energy but the nutrients the food contains.  Inside this podcast, I dive into the power of healing foods, what they are, and how to pattern your diet to support health and healing. I also share common “health foods” you should avoid.   Learn more: https://thelivingwell.com/308

Self care sometimes requires more than taking time for yourself each week. There are times when our body is telling us we need to change something. If you find yourself plagued by autoimmune issues, you're too exhausted to do more than the bare minimum, maybe you even feel emotionally drained beyond normal mom-hood. In this episode, Jeannie talks to her friend and homeschool mom, Anita Roussel, who has been there and found her way out and completely restored to health. By switching to a plant-based diet, she and her husband radically transformed their health. Anita believes eating healthy should be easy and taste amazing. Because of that she's created a cookbook that makes being healthy a breeze. Anita is offering our listeners a free Quick Start Guide, so you can test it out and determine if this is the answer for you. She also has a lively podcast with her husband, Jarrod, where they share testimonies, recipes, and great tips on easy peasy healthy living. About Anita Anita Roussel is a nurse with her BSN, a Certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach, and a homeschooling mom of 4 (ages 10-18). She's a southern girl through and through, raised in rural northwest Georgia where her parents owned a barbecue restaurant serving downhome southern cooking. She firmly believes that no woman should ever have to miss out on the opportunities she wants to take in life just because her body doesn't feel like it. That's because years ago when Anita's health suffered, she and her husband (A Physician Assistant) tried to find the answer the traditional way without success. They knew there must be something that would turn things around! Digging through the research and learning solid, science backed nutritional principles led them to embrace the most nutrient-dense, healing food on the planet, whole plant food. This began Anita's journey of creating simple, mouth-watering plant-based meals that the whole family would love. As a result, her pain, cardiovascular symptoms, and extra pounds disappeared. She and her husband were thrilled to regain their energy and start enjoying incredible opportunities that they'd been missing out on for years! Their children have also embraced the plant based lifestyle and are thriving! Today, through both Power On Plants Society and Podcast, Anita is living her mission of empowering busy women and their families to lead extraordinary lives, by sharing the simple, enjoyable way to heal from the inside out with delicious, life-giving whole plant foods. About Jeannie Jeannie Fulbright, a 24-year veteran homeschooler, is the author of the #1 best-selling, multi award-winning Apologia Young Explorer science series: Exploring Creation with Astronomy, Chemistry and Physics, Botany, Zoology, and Anatomy & Physiology. THE BEST is my guest, the ever mindful Rimi Chakrabordy.  Listen in as she tells us about about a new kind of leadership for women that keeps us connected to our roots. It's called ROOTsilience and it values the WHOLE being. What a concept! ROOTsilience  incorporates authentic leadership exercises that are practical ways we can embody principles of the Chakra system, with tools and foods that root us. Check out the ROOTsilience website for information on programs coming up with ROOTSilence: https://www.rootsilience.com/And while you are there, get your personalized ROOTSilence Leadership map and see where to focus so your path to well being isn't so overwhelming. Set aside about 20 minutes to go through the questions and get the feedback, FREE. https://www.rootsilience.com/f/the-rootsilient-leadership-mapAnd wait, there's more!
