Today's episode is my big take aways from a book that Christopher and I just read through, "After Doubt" by AJ Swoboda. And I need y'all to buckle up for today's episode! This was requested by a friend from NH, and it couldn't have come at a better time… I go into this about how Christopher and I have been walking through some really tough questions this year and we do not know what to do with unanswered questions. And ultimately our goal today and should be always is, "how can you doubt with intention to fully grow closer to Christ?". But here's what I know to be true, y'all. That you and I are supremely loved by God in a way that we don't deserve and can't return. I know that you and I are individually made and have purpose and are important. Don't underestimate the smallest of baby steps towards looking more like Jesus, because this fully delights God. And I'll leave you with my absolute favorite verse that is and will forever be my life verse from Lamentations 3:22-23: "Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. Matt chats with AJ about his new book, After Doubt: How To Question Your Faith Without Losing It. ABOUT A. J. Swoboda (PhD, University of Birmingham) is assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon, and leads a Doctor of Ministry cohort on the Holy Spirit and leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Subversive Sabbath, winner of a Christianity Today Book Award (Spiritual Formation) and an Award of Merit for CT's Beautiful Orthodoxy Book of the Year. Swoboda served for ten years as the lead pastor at Theophilus Church in urban Portland. It's in the contexts of being a college pastor, a church planter in Portland, and a professor that he has had a front row seat to watch doubt and deconstruction play themselves out over and over again, giving him the opportunity to learn a lot about it. He considers After Doubt a manifesto of 22 years of his life. His career really took off when he grew a beard and got the right glasses.

If you were to walk around our neighborhood these days, you’d see a number of homes that are being remodeled. Some of the work is so extensive that no one is living in those homes while the work is being done. But the goal is, of course, to rebuild those houses so that they can become homes again. Many of us are experiencing what some have called the “deconstruction of faith.” Something that made sense and worked before doesn’t seem to anymore. The constructions of faith that we were given aren’t as perfect as we once thought they were. But the goal of deconstruction, in this case, isn’t to destroy the home. It is to rebuild it. Where will our trust in God finds its new home?Recently, I had a very encouraging conversation with my friend, A. J. Swoboda about his latest book titled After Doubt. It’s a beautiful invitation into the sorts of reconstruction that many of us need and into which God is graciously inviting us. A. J. Swoboda is assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University. He also leads a Doctor of Ministry program around the Holy Spirit and leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author of a number of books, including the award-winning Subversive Sabbath.
