How do we really love God with our minds? For Christians the emphasis is often on loving the Lord with our heart, soul and strength, but when it comes to our minds, there can be some reticence. There can be a real pressure in the church to act as if we know it all, or a fear that theology and learning might lead us to not know what we believe. The call to love God with our minds has never been more important. On this episode of Theodisc, Kenny is joined by AJ Swoboda, who thinks that learning is deeply embedded in the Christian tradition. He contends that our faith gives us tools and examples of how we can learn to be the best learners – and not just for the sake of knowledge, but in order to be Christ's faithful witnesses in our world. We hope you learn as much as we have from this episode! A.J. Swoboda is back on the podcast for the third time. This time we are sitting down to talk about A Teachable Spirit. He hit on something that I think is sorely missing in this world today: being teachable. In a world often drawn sharply into polarized camps, where dialogue seems overshadowed by ideological extremes, cultivating a teachable spirit becomes more than a virtue, it becomes an act of quiet revolution. But what exactly does it mean to approach life, faith, and community with genuine humility and openness, even when our convictions run deep? Our conversation explores what it truly means to possess a teachable spirit, how to stand firmly in our beliefs while also actively listening to, honoring, and learning from those who are different than us. We'll explore themes of humility, empathy, wisdom, discernment and the careful balancing act of maintaining convictions while remaining open to growth and change. This is an important conversation, so join us as we unpack the practice of discerning truth in a fragmented world, and how holding our beliefs can transform both our inner and outer worlds and enable us to have a teachable spirit. Rev. A. J. Swoboda (Ph.D., Birmingham) is the associate professor of Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. He served as a college pastor on the University of Oregon campus for nearly ten years. For another decade, he planted and pastored an urban church in Portland, Oregon, called Theophilus, which continues to worship today. He leads a Doctor of Ministry program around Spiritual Formation and Soul Care at Friends University. He has taught at the London School of Theology, LIFE Pacific, Southeastern University, and Multnomah University. He is the author of over ten books, including Redeeming How We Talk (Moody), After Doubt (Brazos), and the award-winning Subversive Sabbath (Brazos). He hosts the Slow Theology podcast (w. Dr. Nijay Gupta) and writes the widely read Low-Level Theologian Substack. Today, Mike and Tim are joined by A.J. Swoboda to discuss his journey in theology, the concept of 'Slow Theology', and the challenges of being teachable in a culture that often shames humility. He explores the tension between emotivism and the life of the mind, emphasizing the importance of learning from diverse perspectives, including those we may disagree with. Swoboda advocates for creating space for differences and encourages Christians to embrace a posture of learning and humility in their faith journey. Further, Mike and A.J. explore the complexities of engaging with culture as Christians, emphasizing the importance of understanding and contextualizing the gospel. They discuss the challenges of navigating truth in a hostile environment, the necessity of self-critique within the faith community, and the vulnerability that comes with learning. A.J. shares a personal story about a moment of realization regarding his lack of knowledge, using it as a metaphor for deeper issues of shame and growth in faith. He was an eloquent man, competent in the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord. And being fervent in spirit,[a] he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue, but when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he wished to cross to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples to welcome him. When he arrived, he greatly helped those who through grace had believed, 28 for he powerfully refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that the Christ was Jesus. A simple daily carpool can turn into a profound spiritual journey when it's used for devotion driven discipleship. Join me (Tosha Williams) as I revisit the origins of my own family's carpool Scripture memorization tradition. This transformed our daily commute into a time of connection and spiritual growth, and it also became the foundation upon which I started the Family Disciple Me ministry. About ten years later, as my youngest daughter is a senior in high school, we are revisiting this tradition one more school year, starting with the character trait of being TEACHABLE. Listen in on this podcast, then join us in the tradition by using the following conversation guide with someone God has entrusted to you!*************************************************CHARACTER CONVERSATIONS: Teachable“My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, 2 for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.” Proverbs 3:1-2 ESVSEEK HIM: Devotion is Meeting with God in Our Own Lives! A teachable spirit benefits us, not only in our childhood or teenage years, but our whole lives long. As we spend time with the Lord and “Seek Him” through this Scripture, let's lask Him these questions and listen to what He wants to speak to us about the character trait of being teachable. WHAT: What is God saying through this Scripture? ~ What teaching and commandments are being referred to in this Scripture? Who is the “son” in this verse, and can you apply this to your life if you're not a son? What are some ways that you can keep from forgetting what you've learned? WHY: Why does this Scripture matter? ~ What kind of life do you want to live? Do you want to experience the bare minimum of life, or would you like more goodness added to your life? Do you have peace in your life; why or why not?HOW: How does God want us to respond to this truth? ~ In what ways are you a teachable person? Are there any areas of your life where God is challenging you to be more teachable? How are you learning to “do good” right now?SPEAK HIM: Discipleship is Making God Known to Others! As we seek to have teachable spirits at every stage of our lives, we model to others what it looks like to be teachable. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Discipleship about being teachable means keeping God's commands in our own hearts and then impressing them on the next generation. Ask God to help you in this!______________________The Family Disciple Me Podcast is a ministry of Family Disciple Me, which exists to catalyze Devotion Driven Discipleship in our homes and around the world. An update to our previous teaching, this week is a much needed reminder to grow!
It has become sadly “normal” to attack not only the opinions of others but also the person holding the opinion. This can be true in academic circles as well. For this reason, I was stunned when scholar and theologian Richard B. Hays wrote a paper that forcefully took to task a work that he himself had written years earlier! In Reading With the Grain of Scripture, Hays demonstrated great humility of heart as he corrected his own past thinking, now fine-tuned by his lifelong commitment to learning. As the book of Proverbs was being introduced, King Solomon listed the various intents of this collection of wise sayings. But in the midst of those purposes, he inserted this challenge, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” (Proverbs 1:5). Like the apostle Paul, who claimed that, even after following Christ for decades, he continued to pursue knowing Jesus (Philippians 3:10), Solomon urged the wise to listen, to learn, and to continue to grow. No one is ever hurt by maintaining a teachable spirit. As we seek to continue to grow and learn about the things of faith (and the things of life), may we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us into truth (John 16:13), that we might better comprehend the wonders of our good and great God.
The mark of a mature person is being able to receive correction. When you stay humble and willing to learn, God will take care of promoting you. Your best days are still ahead, and together we can make a difference in this world with the message of God's hope and love.
