A.J. Swoboda is back on the podcast for the third time. This time we are sitting down to talk about A Teachable Spirit. He hit on something that I think is sorely missing in this world today: being teachable. In a world often drawn sharply into polarized camps, where dialogue seems overshadowed by ideological extremes, cultivating a teachable spirit becomes more than a virtue, it becomes an act of quiet revolution. But what exactly does it mean to approach life, faith, and community with genuine humility and openness, even when our convictions run deep? Our conversation explores what it truly means to possess a teachable spirit, how to stand firmly in our beliefs while also actively listening to, honoring, and learning from those who are different than us. We'll explore themes of humility, empathy, wisdom, discernment and the careful balancing act of maintaining convictions while remaining open to growth and change. This is an important conversation, so join us as we unpack the practice of discerning truth in a fragmented world, and how holding our beliefs can transform both our inner and outer worlds and enable us to have a teachable spirit. Rev. A. J. Swoboda (Ph.D., Birmingham) is the associate professor of Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. He served as a college pastor on the University of Oregon campus for nearly ten years. This is the second in a series of episodes dedicated to a young woman named Lizzy. In this episode, special guest, A.J. Swoboda, shares his newest book, and we cover topics including questions about identity, love, desire, doubt, and criticism from within the Church. Lizzy is a college student from Chelan, Washington. Lizzy grew up in a loving Christian home but has a lot of questions about God, identity, and purpose. She is a very curious person and is someone who often takes things literally. She admits she struggles with anxiety and wonders why God pursues her when it's hard for her to trust Him. She says she's sensed Him trying to get her attention but is unsure about having experienced His love. We hope you enjoy today's episode! About A.J. Swoboda: A.J. Today: “Blessed are the meek…” from Guest Speaker: Dr. Joe Womack, Bushnell University This year, our church will go verse-by-verse through the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew chapters 5 through 7. It is the longest recorded sermon from Jesus in the Gospels. Jesus' sermon begins with the nine 'Beatitudes.' The Beatitudes are the descriptions of certain traits or situations that describe those who are following the way of Jesus. Need Prayer? In this episode, A.J. Swoboda returns to Shifting Culture to discuss his latest book The Gift of Thorns. We talk desires and longings. Our desires are good – we see desire in Adam even before the fall. But sometimes we have desires of the flesh, but even those desires point to an ultimate longing that we have that can be ordered towards God. This is a great conversation, but we lost a bit of it because of technical issues. So you are going to miss a bit of it in the middle, but you probably won't even notice that something is missing. So, my suggestion – get A.J.'s book. It's really fantastic and you won't regret it. I want to have a small group go through it together. I think it's so helpful. But before you do all that, join us in this conversation as we figure out how to order our desires, find healing, and forgiveness. A.J. A. J. Swoboda (Staley Guest) Dr. A. J. Swoboda (Ph.D., Birmingham) is Associate Professor of Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. For nearly ten years, he served as a college pastor on the campus of the University of Oregon. Then, for another decade, he planted and pastored an urban church in Portland, Oregon, called Theophilus which continues to worship to this day. The Gift of Thorns “We have to very careful to distinguish between ‘did God let me down?' or ‘did my expectations of God let me down?' What if not getting what we want is one of God's great gifts? “God knows what is good for us when we don't,” says the Rev. Dr. A. J. Swoboda. “To ultimately assume God's desires for us are the best desires, and believing that, is our first step in being followers of Christ.” “I have grown the most in my spiritual journey with Jesus in places where I have not gotten everything I want. And what I'm trying to say is, I don't grow in the great times. I grow in the times when I'm mad that I didn't get what I want God to do,” Swoboda says. When we find that we're disappointed or angry with God, it's important to figure out what God has promised us. “We have to very careful to distinguish between ‘did God let me down?' or ‘did my expectations of God let me down?' We've got to be cautious to not assume that God and our expectations about God are the same exact thing,” he says. It is actually a gift, Swoboda says, to not get what we want. “Jesus lived a life of willingly giving up everything He wanted. In fact, in the Garden of Gethsemane, he pleads with the Father to not die on the cross. Yet he submits Himself to what the Father wants over what His flesh and emotions wanted. And so I think life is in those places in our life. I think the thorns are a gift. I don't think they're a problem, I think they're a gift.” “At least in our world, unless you embrace the thorn, you won't ever receive the rose. And that with every thorn there is a rose. We tend to focus on the thorn, and we forget the rose.” Hear much more from A. J. Swoboda by listening to our 15-minute podcast. Often the holiday season can be quite self-centered. There is a focus on wish lists and what we want for gifts. Surely there has to be an alternative to this self-indulgence.On this Sunday before Thanksgiving, we consider what biblical gratitude looks like and how we can incorporate it throughout the holiday season. For this special Sunday, we welcome back our friend Dr. Agam from Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon. Dr. Agam serves as the Associate Dean of Bible & World Christianity and the Associate Professor of Bible & World Christianity. Dr. Agam is a powerful preacher of biblical truth and we are honored and thrilled to have him speak to us this year on Gratitude Sunday.

To enrich our Sunday teaching series Godbreathed, the Park Hill Church Podcast is hosting conversations with scholars, theologians, and pastors all about the good, bad, ugly and beautiful parts of the Bible, and how to encounter Jesus through it all. This conversation is with Dr. AJ Swoboda. AJ is a pastor, theologian, and cohost of the Slow Theology Podcast alongside Nijay Gupta. AJ currently teaches Bible and Theology at Bushnell University. In this conversation, Evan Wickham asks AJ some questions about the Bible. As Always, Swoboda's responses never fail to surprise and delight (which might involve a tirade against what he calls "Bible shaming" plus a provocative take on “kosmos” in John 3:16 being about God's love for extra terrestrials as well as humans). We think this conversation will help you on your journey following Jesus.

With the overwhelming pace of life, many of us struggle to stop long enough to be present. Too often we live our lives more at the pace of the culture in self-interest, drivenness, empty excitement and anxiety. Alan Fadling has spent years coaching leaders and communities how to live an unhurried life, teaching that productivity and success are not our chief end, but rather living at the pace that our true self longs to live. So, he and Stephanie discuss how to follow the pace of Jesus Christ. Jesus never hurried, yet He accomplished everything He needed. How can we run counterculture and embrace rest as part of our spiritual roots? Alan invites us to ponder the essential nature of slowing down in a culture that tells us that productivity is the measure of our worth. Brew yourself a cup of your favorite hot drink, curl up with a blanket and join this slow, purposeful conversation about worshipping Jesus Christ through rest. As part of our “Pathways to God's presence” series, Stephanie and Alan invite you to slow down enough to hear the whisper of God's presence in your day. MEET ALAN FADLING Alan Fadling is president and founder of Unhurried Living, Inc. in California. He speaks and consults internationally with organizations such as Saddleback Church, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, Cru, Halftime Institute, Apprentice Institute, and Open Doors International. He is the award-winning author of An Unhurried Leader and An Unhurried Life, which was honored with a Christianity Today Award of Merit in spirituality. He is also coauthor (with Gem Fadling) of What Does Your Soul Love? Alan speaks from his award-winning book, An Unhurried Life, about unhurried life with God, in community, in leadership development, in solitude, silence and prayer, and in doing the hard work of continued growth. From his book, An Unhurried Leader, he speaks on leading from overflow, working and leading with God, grace-empowered leadership, and leadership vision. He addresses the intersection between personal spiritual formation and fruitful leadership engagement. People leave these gatherings inspired, encouraged and energized for their life and work with God. Alan consults with groups of leaders to provide training in a way of planning, strategizing and leading that is well-rooted in deep intimacy with God. Incorporate a “seek the kingdom first” approach to leadership. Learn to plan events from a center of listening to God and seeing people through His eyes. Learning these patterns contributes to the sustainability of your leadership, and can produce “much fruit that lasts (Jn 15:16).” Alan offers coaching to focus individual attention on issues of personal spiritual and leadership formation. He has served as a sabbatical coach to many. He brings decades of leadership experience to those he coaches. His coaching combines the essence of a spiritual director and the practicality of a leadership formation coach. Alan can help you get unstuck and find your unhurried and fruitful way forward in leadership and ministry. GO TO https://www.unhurriedliving.com/ for more. Buy Alan's new book at https://www.unhurriedliving.com/ayearofslowingdown Alan says, “These devotionals had their beginnings in my personal journal. I began to practice the regular discipline of spiritual journaling in my twenties. Since then, I've journaled thousands of pages and millions of words. My journal is a place where I wrestle, meditate, reflect, create, and, in it all, pray. It's a place where I acknowledge the presence of God with me. I trust that the Spirit of God with me along the way will be with you as you read.” Endorsements for “A year of slowing down”: "The brilliance in this book cannot be overstated. Resting takes time. Lord knows, it takes great grace as well. When Israel came out of Egypt, it took a long time to learn the new rhythms of God under the lordship of Yahweh. This book invites us to a conversion of rhythm. And if you are like any of us, it may take a whole year. Highly recommended." - A. J. Swoboda, assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University, author of After Doubt "I can't think of anyone better than Alan Fadling to lead us on these five-minute daily retreats that he has provided. Far from being escape moments, these times will help us sink more deeply into reality." - Jan Johnson, president of Dallas Willard Ministries and author of Abundant Simplicity "Don't be fooled by the title of this book into thinking it's about slowing down the pace of your life so you can 'smell the flowers' or somehow break away from the world. It's about adopting a pace of life that allows you to listen to the Scripture more fully, with your mind as well as your heart. That is what Alan has done in the writing of this book. He models it for us on every page. If this is the result of a deliberately unhurried pace, then I'm in!" - Michael Card, musician and author of Scribbling in the Sand. Today I sit down Dr. A. J. Swoboda, Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies and World Christianity at Bushnell University in Eugene, OR. I was first introduced to Dr. Swoboda through a recommendation for his book, After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith without Losing It. I read through his book and used it for a Wednesday PM Bible study, and loved it. His earnestness in dealing with the issues of #faith #deconstruction while remaining connected to a #church were a breath of fresh air, and his even-handed approach leaves readers feeling both comforted and convicted. To contact Dr. Swoboda, you can find his faculty page here: https://www.bushnell.edu/faculty/a-j-swoboda/For more information on Swoboda's books, see: https://www.ajswobodawrites.com/

Meet your host, Glen Miles: Dr. R. Glen Miles is the Senior Minister of First Community Church in Columbus, Ohio beginning in March 2017. First Community is a multi-site church with north and south locations in Columbus and Camp Akita in Logan, Ohio, a ministry of the church that welcomes over 1800 youth campers each year. This 3000-member congregation has a long and storied history as a place of welcome and acceptance. With a focus on meaningful worship and effective preaching, Glen's dynamic, powerful style demonstrates his philosophy that the mission of the church is to proclaim the unconditional love of God available for all people. He is a prominent resource for issues regarding congregational guidance and general church administration. Glen regularly teaches classes in the areas of Biblical interpretation, community building, life transitions, ethics, religion, and society. Glen holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, Calif., a Master of Divinity degree from Emmanuel Christian Seminary in Johnson City, Tenn., and a Bachelor of Science degree from Bushnell University in Eugene, Ore. Glen has served churches in Kansas City, Missouri; Atlanta, Georgia; San Diego, California; Concord, California; Johnson City, Tennessee; and Hanford, California. He and his wife Julie have two sons, Nate, and Steven. Glen's guest this week is Amy Butler. Pastor Amy believes deeply that courageous communities of people who live with tenacious love can change the world. Much of her career has been spent helping build communities of radical witness in the institutional church. She currently leads National City Christian Church as intentional interim Senior Minister. Amy most recently served until 2019 as the seventh Senior Minister and first woman at the helm of The Riverside Church in the City of New York. She holds degrees from Baylor University, the International Baptist Theological Seminary, and Wesley Theological Seminary. Pastor Amy's professional ministry career began as the director of a homeless shelter for women in New Orleans, Louisiana; she later became Associate Pastor of Membership and Mission at St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in the city of New Orleans. In 2003, Butler was called to the position of Senior Minister of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.'s Chinatown, where she was also the first woman to lead that historic congregation. Though leading institutions of faith in this moment can be one of the most challenging leadership tasks around, she is optimistic about the impact faith communities have on the world. When she's not busy leading, teaching, preaching or writing, Pastor Amy enjoys exploring the city wearing a mask, and hanging out with friends, at an appropriate social distance. She is an avid reader and loves to write, recently completing her first memoir which will be published by Penguin Random House Books. Pastor Amy is a single mom to three amazing young adults who are each making their way in the world; they are her favorites. She played the cello in high school but that has absolutely no relevance to her current life. Her children would say that her status as a licensed motorcyclist is the direct result of a midlife crisis, but she disagrees. And she hates exercise with a passion, perpetually bitter about a metabolism that requires it.

It has become vogue to deconstruct everything, especially Christianity, without any desire for the reconstruction of something that is closer to the real Jesus Christ and the way of life he offers us. Honest doubt about what we've been taught is a good thing. In fact, healthy deconstruction can create great spiritual growth. But doubt can also lead someone to lose their faith. Our guest says that we can question our faith without losing it. A. J. Swoboda (PhD, University of Birmingham) is assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University. He also leads a Doctor of Ministry program in Holy Spirit Leadership & Ministry Practice at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author of a number of books, including the Christianity Today 2019 Book Award Winner (Spiritual Formation) Subversive Sabbath (Brazos Press, 2018). His latest book is titled After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith without Losing It (Brazos Press, 2021). High-profile Christians are “deconstructing” their faith. So are some of our family and friends. What are they doing, how might we love them through the process, and is there hope that after this deconstruction that they'll reconstruct a faith that glorifies God? “I think, to be honest with you, some deconstruction is absolutely necessary and healthy,” says pastor, professor, and author the Dr. Rev. A J Swoboda. “And some of it is also very dark and demonic. So it's a mixed bag.” Dr. Swoboda's newest book is titled After Doubt: How to Question Your Faith Without Losing It. Swoboda leads a Doctor of Ministry program at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is also an assistant professor of biblical studies & world Christianity at Bushnell University in Eugene. Addressing those who love someone deconstructing their faith, Dr. Swoboda says: “I think the most important thing we can do is create space for people who are asking really big questions, and don't marginalize or ostracize or shame people that are in the midst of these experiences. People can download podcasts, but they can't download friends. And the truth is we need people who make space for others in the midst of their struggles.” And if you are the one deconstructing the faith: “I want to say to the person who is going through the deconstruction: keep drawing yourself back to the community, the Resurrection community. . . All of us are going to go through bouts and experiences of having a hard time believing. Keep showing up. And we all have the promise of hope, that Christ will reveal Himself fully to each of us. But we play a role of not giving up. Keep coming back. There is hope. Keep coming back.” You can learn about Dr. A J Swoboda and his books here. But if you want to know if Dr. Swoboda is related to former professional baseball player and sports commentator Ron Swoboda, you'll have to listen to the podcast.

Is there a way to walk faithfully through doubt and come out the other side with a deeper love for Jesus, the church, and its tradition? Can we question our faith without losing it? Matt chats with AJ about his new book, After Doubt: How To Question Your Faith Without Losing It. ABOUT A. J. Swoboda (PhD, University of Birmingham) is assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University in Eugene, Oregon, and leads a Doctor of Ministry cohort on the Holy Spirit and leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author or editor of numerous books, including Subversive Sabbath, winner of a Christianity Today Book Award (Spiritual Formation) and an Award of Merit for CT's Beautiful Orthodoxy Book of the Year. Swoboda served for ten years as the lead pastor at Theophilus Church in urban Portland. It's in the contexts of being a college pastor, a church planter in Portland, and a professor that he has had a front row seat to watch doubt and deconstruction play themselves out over and over again, giving him the opportunity to learn a lot about it. He considers After Doubt a manifesto of 22 years of his life. His career really took off when he grew a beard and got the right glasses.
If you were to walk around our neighborhood these days, you’d see a number of homes that are being remodeled. Some of the work is so extensive that no one is living in those homes while the work is being done. But the goal is, of course, to rebuild those houses so that they can become homes again. Many of us are experiencing what some have called the “deconstruction of faith.” Something that made sense and worked before doesn’t seem to anymore. The constructions of faith that we were given aren’t as perfect as we once thought they were. But the goal of deconstruction, in this case, isn’t to destroy the home. It is to rebuild it. Where will our trust in God finds its new home?Recently, I had a very encouraging conversation with my friend, A. J. Swoboda about his latest book titled After Doubt. It’s a beautiful invitation into the sorts of reconstruction that many of us need and into which God is graciously inviting us. A. J. Swoboda is assistant professor of Bible, theology, and world Christianity at Bushnell University. He also leads a Doctor of Ministry program around the Holy Spirit and leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary. He is the author of a number of books, including the award-winning Subversive Sabbath. He is married to Quinn and is the proud father of Elliot. They live and work in Eugene, Oregon.Enjoy getting to know A. J. better via social at:Facebook @theajswobodaTwitter @mrajswoboda
