In this episode, my guest is Jason Jenkins and we talk about some of the sequels to our favorite horror franchises that had a great sequel or remake idea in the works but for some reason never made it out of the production board room. His book, Phantom Limbs (based on the Bloody Disgusting column he wrote during the pandemic) is a great source for the horror geek in all of us as well as your basic film history buff. Check it out on its April 2, 2024 release date. From the publisher: Originally a column on popular horror website Bloody Disgusting, Phantom Limbs is the inaugural volume of a planned series of books which will explore the histories of unmade horror movie sequels and remakes and the stories they would have told. “I've always been drawn to the stories behind unmade movies,” says Jenkins, “going all the way back to my early days as a horror nerd reading about Peter Jackson's unrealized Nightmare on Elm Street sequel in an old Fangoria back in the 90s.  It's a pleasure and a privilege to be able to speak with so many brilliant creatives about their own unproduced genre works and to help usher their stories along to fellow fans.” Featuring lengthy interviews, detailed synopses and concept artwork/posters, Phantom Limbs will cover unmade extensions to popular horror franchises such as Halloween, Predator, Psycho, Resident Evil, Saw, The Shining, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.  This initial volume will also include chats with such genre luminaries as Mike Flanagan, Mick Garris, Alan B. McElroy, Jeffrey Reddick, Stephen Susco, and many others! Sean Duregger, Managing Editor of Encyclopocalypse had this to say of Phantom Limbs, “Mark Alan Miller and I adored Jason's column at Bloody Disgusting and it's been a treat bringing it to horror fans in the expanded form only a book can give you. I'm personally excited to add this alongside all of my other revered Horror Nonfiction on my bookshelf.” Phantom Limbs will be available directly from Encyclopocalypse Publications in eBook and Print at www.encyclopocalypse.com (BuyHorrorBooks.com) or from your favorite bookseller. The complex computer shuts down the base to prevent infection. The parent corporation sends in an elite military unit, where they meet Alice, who is suffering from amnesia due to exposure to nerve gas. The military team must shut down the computer and get out, fighting their way past zombies, mutants, and the computer itself, before the virus escapes and infects the rest of the world. Alice must also come to terms with her slowly-returning memories. Resident Evil is a 2002 action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is loosely based on the video game series of the same name. Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. German studio Constantin Film bought the rights to adapt the series in January 1997. Several writers and filmmakers, such as Alan B. McElroy, George A. Romero and Jamie Blanks, were initially hired to direct and write the film, but their scripts were rejected. In 2000, Anderson was announced as writer and director. Developed as a prequel set in the same continuity as the video game series, the film was initially titled Resident Evil: Ground Zero, but was retitled after the September 11 attacks. Cast was announced in early 2001 and principal photography commenced in March 2001 in Berlin. Resident Evil was theatrically released in Germany on March 12, 2002, by Constantin Film Verleih, and in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2002, by Screen Gems and Pathé Distribution. The film received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed $103 million worldwide against a production budget of $33 million. It was followed by five sequels establishing their own alternate continuity: Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012), and The Final Chapter (2016).

Big thank you to one of the best writers, producers, and directors in the industry Alan B. McElroy for coming on my show for an interview! Alan discussed how he started to write at an early age, learning how to write a screenplay by studying Bill Lancaster's screenplay of John Carpenter's The Thing, and being inspired to write horror movies when he saw Jaws in the movie theaters. He discussed writing the script for Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers in just 11 days, talking to Donald Pleasance on set, and his idea for Jamie Lloyd becoming the shape not carrying over in Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers. He got into what he would do with Halloween III: Season of the Witch if he was approached with the story for a prequel or sequel and possibly create a Haddonfield series. Alan also talked about writing the cult classic 2003 film Wrong Turn, the original idea that he had for it, and putting a spin on his own work for his 2021 version of Wrong Turn. He mentioned that he has an idea for a trilogy for the new Wrong Turn and is already pitching it. He also got into his experience of writing for Star Trek: Discovery and Vampire Diaries. It was recently announced that Alan is writing a new thriller called Help involving Tyler Perry and Jason Blum. Stay tuned! Follow me on Instagram and Twitter: @thereelmax. In 2003, screenwriter Alan B. McElroy created a film series called Wrong Turn about a group of young people having to hike through the West Virginia woods after their cars break down.  Unfortunately for them, a trio of inbred mutants hunts them down as food.  With the original film's success, five more were made as the villainous mutants returned for more death and torture.  Now in 2021, a reboot written by the original screenwriter has been released. College students Jen, Darius, and their four friends head out for an outdoor adventure on the Appalachian Trail in Virginia.  When they decide to go view an old Civil War fort off the beaten track, disaster happens.  Soon they find themselves confronted by a mysterious cult in the backwoods that they may have wronged.  Lost and without gear, all their lives are turn out to be in jeopardy. Alan B. McElroy returns to the film series that he made iconic.  Rebooted and with a new type of villain, his screenplay was directed by newcomer Mike P. Nelson.  The film received mixed reviews but did get some early year buzz from horror fans.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this new addition to a horror franchise and gives their thoughts.

Six movies into this insane series, and somehow a seventh has had my complete interest since it was announced last year or so... That's a bold statement from me, considering the fact that every movie after the original has gone straight to DVD. But with an unknown director (to me anyhow) and the writer of the first film (Halloween 4's Alan B. McElroy) attached, I can only think of what they can pull off for this next turn. Enjoy, y'all.

Tim and Ryan take an arrow to the eyeball for this mid-2000’s, hillbilly-horror vehicle: not even Eliza Dushku or “Mr. Serious“ could completely save this “stupid, stupid, stupid” film. Despite Ryan’s deep love for it, (and the subsequent high school game of “Dushku” it spawned) he gave it a “rent” while Tim handed it a weak “stream.” Where we watched: Amazon Rental RecommenDEADtions: I Saw The Devil / We Are What We Are Wrong Turn (2003) Directed by Rob Schmidt Written by Alan B.
