One of Capcom's biggest franchises got its own big screen adaptation in 2002 with Resident Evil, directed by the same man that brought us Mortal Kombat in 1995: Paul W. S. Anderson. Critics were not kind, as is the case with most video game movies, but the movie found its audience and spawned numerous sequels. One of us loves the RE games, the other has never picked one up. Will this affect our enjoyment of Milla Jovovich? It's a new era for the Alien franchise, as the first entry in the series that helped shape Metroid without Sigorney Weaver enters full-on spinoff territory, colliding with the world of Predator to deliver the ultimate showdown in Alien vs. Predator! Andy and Gooey Fame are back to dish out their thoughts on the Paul W. S. Anderson directed film. While this film probably has the least in common with Metroid than almost any other entry in the series, we still analyze what makes a good spinoff film and game, while drawing some slight parallels to Metroid Prime Hunters. We're also talking about our thoughts on the Predator franchise, the coolest kills in the movie, the crazy lore and story of the movie, how Weyland Yutani isn't actually mega evil in AVP, the state of both the Alien and the Predator franchises heading into this crossover, how the movie not having one main character to rally around makes it tough, and so much more! I gotta tell ya, this is the most a movie has ever been hyped for me where it's also matched the expectations set. It's spooky, it's bloody, it's shockingingly great for a Paul W. S. Anderson movie, and every performance was on point. Other than poking at the director, I have no bit for this episode, this movie kind of kicks that much ass. My good buddy Alex and I really enjoyed talking about it, and we also have a lot to say regarding the Audio Description and accessibility for both streaming and theatrical releses. Dig it!

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta RESIDENT EVIL (2002) A virus has escaped in a secret facility called "The Hive," turning the staff into hungry zombies and releasing the mutated Lab "Animals" that they were studying. The complex computer shuts down the base to prevent infection. The parent corporation sends in an elite military unit, where they meet Alice, who is suffering from amnesia due to exposure to nerve gas. The military team must shut down the computer and get out, fighting their way past zombies, mutants, and the computer itself, before the virus escapes and infects the rest of the world. Alice must also come to terms with her slowly-returning memories. Resident Evil is a 2002 action horror film written and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson. The film stars Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes, and Colin Salmon. It is the first installment in the Resident Evil film series, which is loosely based on the video game series of the same name. Borrowing elements from the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2, the film follows amnesiac heroine Alice and a band of Umbrella Corporation commandos as they attempt to contain the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility. German studio Constantin Film bought the rights to adapt the series in January 1997. Several writers and filmmakers, such as Alan B. McElroy, George A. Romero and Jamie Blanks, were initially hired to direct and write the film, but their scripts were rejected. In 2000, Anderson was announced as writer and director. Developed as a prequel set in the same continuity as the video game series, the film was initially titled Resident Evil: Ground Zero, but was retitled after the September 11 attacks. Cast was announced in early 2001 and principal photography commenced in March 2001 in Berlin. Resident Evil was theatrically released in Germany on March 12, 2002, by Constantin Film Verleih, and in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2002, by Screen Gems and Pathé Distribution. The film received generally negative reviews from critics and grossed $103 million worldwide against a production budget of $33 million. It was followed by five sequels establishing their own alternate continuity: Apocalypse (2004), Extinction (2007), Afterlife (2010), Retribution (2012), and The Final Chapter (2016).

Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Discord server, Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Anthony (of Capes on the Couch) joined us to go a hilarious and irreverent deep dive into the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie, discussing everything from its iconic soundtrack to its questionable casting choices. From Jean Claude Van Damme's missed opportunity to be part of the cast to the iconic soundtrack, the hosts offer witty observations and absurd suggestions that will have you laughing out loud. But it's their suggestions for new characters and fatalities in the Mortal Kombat franchise that really shine, including a shirtless sax man from Lost Boys and a 'bloodwind' instrument played through a victim's ribs. And did Kevin Nash give his quads that Raiden could look fabulous?psst. we've actually done a bunch of these "goes to the movies" episodes. Check this page to see all of the released specials. Here's a sample of the full show notes - make sure to click through and check them out.Content WarningAs this is an episode about a both PG13 rated movie and a fighting game which literally started the game rating systems, we'd advise a little caution for this episode. There's nothing explicitly terrible in this episode, but the subject matter can be pretty rough. There are a few swears toward the end of the episode, but they're all bleeped out. There's also a part at 42:44 (which lasts for 90 seconds) where we discuss possible titles for a porn parody for this movie. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesThe boys are back in town, and this time they're joined by Anthony of the Capes on the Couch podcast. Anthony joined us to talk about the 1995 movie Mortal Kombat. Anthony was actually on an earlier episode - here's a link to that episode. And he described Capes on the Couch as:So Capes on the Couch, we are a podcast. We just crossed the five year mark, which we're very proud of, and we cover the mental health issues of comic book characters. And my co host, my best friend, my brother, is a board certified psychiatrist, and so he breaks it down from the perspective of, "what are some of the issues that each character faces?" And then we dissect what treatment options would look like for the characters, both in universe and that can involve whatever the characters have available to them, if they're magical, if they are technologically savvy, whatever the case may be, if the have abilities. Whatever that world has to offer, Doc will utilize that in treatment. And then we discuss what treatment would look like for a real person with a lot of these issues. And then we role play what a therapy session with that character would sound like. And it gives us an opportunity to have a little bit of fun and to do some voice acting. Some of them are funny, some of them are deadly, some of them are really serious. So it all honestly depends on the character. And so we have a lot of fun with it.And we just recently announced, I don't know exactly when this episode is going to be coming out, but we just found out that we are going to be doing our first ever panel appearance at a convention. We will be at Puchi Con in Atlantic City, New Jersey, so not terribly far from where we are. On Sunday, May 14, we will be discussing Vash the Stampede from Trigun. If you are at all a manga or anime fan, the con is a little more anime and manga focused than your standard comic convention. So when we were putting the panel together, I said to Doc, we've never done a manga character. I want to make sure that we hit the audience kind of where they are.- AnthonyInterestingly, since they had recorded the Mortal Kombat Annihilation episode ahead of this one - though it wasn't out when this one was being recorded - Squidge and Anthony had some things to say about it before the record button was pressed. Jay brought this up.Well, I wouldn't say it was trash talk, but Squid seemed to indicate that he felt that Mortal Kombat Annihilation was the best Mortal Kombat movie of them all. And I personally disabused him of that notion. Now, mind you, I haven't seen the reboot, so I cannot compare that to the original two...So I did see Moral Kombat Annihilation in theaters, and I could say, Squidge, I don't know what you were on. I don't know what we're just talking about mental health. Maybe you need to see somebody. Maybe you need to get some treatment there, because I think you are operating under a delusion and under a separate reality than the rest of us. And that is okay. That is you're living your truth. But I'm going to speak my truth. I'm going to live my reality. And my reality is one in which the Mortal Kombat Annihilation falls well below the standard of the original. So that is what I will politely and tactfully say about that.- AnthonyAnd Squidge's rebuttal was plain for all to hear:The story is already established, and it's not meant to be taken as seriously as the first one. So in that regards, story is inconsequential, really. But it's a quote. Irish comedian Dylan Moran - Mortal Kombat Annihilation not that part. This part, "it's fabulously f*%king stupid." The movie is pure cheese, and I love it. Talk about 90s cheese films, and itt doesn't get better than Mortal Kombat. Annihilation, seriously- SquidgeBasic Info on the MovieThis movie was released in 1995, and Mortal Kombat Annihilation was a direct sequel to it - taking place seconds after the ending of this movie. It was directed by Paul W. S. "look at how hot my future wife is" Anderson, and after making this movie he stepped away from it because he "didn't want to get tied down to a series." But after seeing the failure that was the sequel, he wanted to keep hold of the reins for the next video game movie he made: Resident Evil. So if you want someone to blame for the live action Resident Evil movies, then Lawrence Kasinoff (the producer of both Mortal Kombat movies) is your man.But then, if we didn't have the first Mortal Kombat movie, we'd have never had the absolute banger that is Utah Saints Take On The Theme From Mortal Kombat. So swings and roundabouts, really.Thank you, Utah Saints, for that. If you don't get hyped after hearing that and want to run through a goddamn brick wall, like, check a pulse.- AnthonyInitial ThoughtsBefore they could discuss the movie proper, Anthony brought up a very valid point about the journalism in this movie:How bad is the press? Though, that they have nothing else to write about. That Johnny Cage's fighting skills make front page headlines on two separate continents in at least two different languages. How starved are they for content? Of all the things that the could write about, there's no political corruption, there's no diseases, there's no global disasters. No. Let's talk about whether or not this globally beloved action star is a fake.- AnthonyTo which Squidge responded by asking the most important question of all time:So does does that make Johnny Cage the Tommy Wiseau of the mortal Kombat universe? I think that's my mic drop moment. I'm done.- SquidgeGet in touch with us on Twitter or our Discord server if you think that this movie would have been better if Tommy Wiseau had been in it. Remember that you can always get in touch with us on our Discord server, Facebook page, on Twitter, or with our Contact page.Squidge and Jay take you on a hilarious journey through one of the cheesiest action movies of the 90s: Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. With their witty banter and insightful commentary, they break down the fight scenes, discuss the plot, and share fun facts you never knew about the making of the film.psst. we've actually done a bunch of these "goes to the movies" episodes. Please listen responsibly.Show NotesThis episode may or may not have been recorded live at the Jammy Awards:Hello, greetings, and welcome to another edition of the Jammy Awards. This is the 37th annual edition, I'm in my jammies why are you not.I am here, my name is Squidge...- SquidgeExcept that it wasn't recorded live, Jammy Awards or no.This episode was just Squidge and Jay talking about (as Jay put it)MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!!!!ONEONEONEELEVEN- JayBasic Info on the MovieThis movie was released in 1997, as a sequel to 1995's Mortal Kombat - don't worry, we're going to cover that movie. We wanted to start with Annihilation for... reasons. The 1995 movie was directed by Paul W. S. "look at how hot my future wife is" Anderson, but this piece of celluloid was directed by John R. Leonetti. Not only was the director replaced, but most of the cast were too; with Christopher Lambert being replaced by James Remar - there's a perfectly logical reason for this, and it's explored in the next Goes to the Movies episode. Teaser much? The plot of this movie revolves mostly around the games Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat 3, which makes sense when you realise how little plot there are in fighting games.Initial ThoughtsNeither Squidge nor Jay saw this movie on the big screen. But Squidge remembers seeing Star Wars Episode 1 on the big screen, and Jay remembers The Power Rangers Movie as their first movie.Starting with a montage is a baller move, for sure. And it's even more impressive than the way that Casino Royale into Quantum of Solace did it.Full Show NotesMake sure to check out the full show notes for more discussion on the points we raise, some extra meta-analysis, some out-of-context screen grabs from the movie, and some links to related things. Are you a fan of the Doom games? Their writing was influenced by Aztec mythology, the comic book series, and the writings of Erich von Däniken. Twenty-five years ago, director Paul W. S. Anderson followed up his video game adaptation Mortal Kombat with an R-rated hard sci-fi scary movie. Starring Sam Neill after Jurassic Park and Laurence Fishburne before The Matrix, this cosmic horror was rushed to release in order to fill a Paramount slot in theaters vacated by James Cameron's Titanic after the latter film ran overtime in production. While Cameron's movie about a lost ship would go on to a December release that saw it win 11 Oscars and become the highest-grossing film of all time, Anderson's search-and-rescue thriller was a commercial and critical failure. While it gained traction on home video and eventually became a cult classic, the studio torched cut footage ruling out the chance of us ever seeing a director's cut release of what was originally a much scarier, much weirder, and much gorier film. This week sees another episode of our Movie Gifts podcast. It's like Secret Santa but for movies—each participant picks a title for another that the recipient hasn't seen. It's a fun way to share enthusiasms and gain new insights on old favorites. For this round, Film Comment co-deputy editors Devika Girish and Clinton Krute invited FC contributor Nathan Lee and former FC editor Gavin Smith, two longtime friends, who were eager to assign each other movies. For Gavin, Nathan selected Paul W. S. Anderson's action-packed 2008 remake Death Race. For Nathan, Gavin chose Larry Cohen's 1976 apocalyptic sci-fi stunner God Told Me To. Devika and Clint were a little less considerate to each other: Clint gifted Devika the toxic 1979 football drama North Dallas Forty, while Devika gifted Clint her childhood favorite, Baby's Day Out, a madcap live-action cartoon about a sadistic baby running wild in the streets. Event Horizon is a 1997 science fiction horror film directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and written by Philip Eisner. It stars Laurence Fishburne, Sam Neill, Kathleen Quinlan and Joely Richardson. Set in 2047, it follows a crew of astronauts sent on a rescue mission after a missing spaceship, the Event Horizon, spontaneously appears in orbit around Neptune. Searching the ship for signs of life, they learn that the Event Horizon was a test bed for an experimental engine that created a rift in the space–time continuum and left our universe entirely, allowing a malevolent force to possess it. In 2047, a distress signal is received from the Event Horizon, a starship that disappeared during its maiden voyage to Proxima Centauri seven years earlier, and has mysteriously reappeared in a decaying orbit around Neptune. The rescue vessel Lewis and Clark is dispatched. Its crew—Capt. Miller, second-in-command Lt. Starck, pilot Smith, medical technician Peters, engineer Ensign Justin, doctor D.J., and rescue technician Cooper—is joined by Dr. William Weir, the Event Horizon's designer. He briefs them on the ship's experimental gravity drive with a simple visualization of how it folds space-time. The distress signal seems to consist of a series of screams and howls but D.J. believes he can discern the Latin phrase "Liberate me"("Save me"). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/digresscast/message
