Bonus episode alert! Zena sits down with two legends of the horror genre: writer-director Paul Etheredge (best known for the groundbreaking queer slasher HELLBENT) and Jeffrey Reddick (the mind behind FINAL DESTINATION and a key voice in modern horror). They're here to talk about their latest collaboration: THE OTHER! A chilling, thought-provoking film that blends horror and psychological suspense with sharp social commentary. Together, they dive deep into the making of THE OTHER, from the layered storytelling and character development to themes of adoption, race, identity, and the creeping dread that drives the film's core. In THE OTHER, after years of infertility, Robin and Daniel adopt Kathelia, a mute orphan with a troubled past. But as her behavior grows more disturbing, they realize something far more sinister has entered their home…and their lives. Currently streaming on Apple TV, Prime Video, Google Play, and Fandango. Just over a month ago, we promised we would come back for the new entry in the "Final Destination" Franchise. So here we are fulfilling our commitment with ninety minutes devoted to discussing gruesome means of dying and re-ranking the whole set of films. Jay Cluitt steps in as host, returning to the show in his former capacity. Lisa Leaheey, Aaron Neuwirth, and Matthew Simpson are also here. Richard was out this week (although he does make a surprise appearance in a couple of spots) and Jay invited Justin Gott to fill the void. Does "Bloodlines" have what it takes to be a real destination event? Is Lisa ever going to get over that thing in the first film that bugs her so much? Will Matthew be able to point out all the Vancouver locations in the movie? Can Jay come up with either a game or an exit question? Will Justin lose all credibility by preferring the 4th film to the 2nd? and finally, what does Aaron have on Jeffrey Reddick. the creator of the Franchise, to get him to come back to his own podcast? Listen, Download, Stream and find out.

Laci and Matt are broadcasting to you from a cabin in the woods, where they're eating canned cat food with oven mitts, trying to dodge that pesky Grim Reaper. But the rats need their cheese, so here's a new episode about Final Destination (2000). (You're the rat, I guess.) It's the movie that launched one of the great horror franchises. A franchise that Matt posits is Friday the 13th for the decade of the 2000s. This series has it all: Primitive cell phones! Internet research on big ole computers! And nu-metal, nu-metal, nu-metal. And it all started here, with this movie that began life as an X-Files spec script and, even in its final form, has forgotten to take the X-Files out. That's not a bad thing. Hey Horror Fans!!!This week on Mostly Horror, we're joined by writer, producer, and horror legend Jeffrey Reddick—the creator of Final Destination. We dive deep into Jeffrey's wild journey from writing a Nightmare on Elm Street prequel at age 14 to creating one of horror's most iconic franchises.Jeffrey opens up about the state of representation in the industry, sharing personal stories about navigating Hollywood as a queer Black creator. We talk about the pressure to conform, the myth that diversity is a risk, and how films like Sinners are proving just how wrong that is.We also touch on the origins of Flight 180, the everyday objects that now give people anxiety, the brilliance of Tony Todd, and how Final Destination continues to evolve even without him directly involved.
In this special episode, we're joined by horror icon Jeffrey Reddick, the creator of Final Destination, for a nostalgic and in-depth look at his incredible journey through the genre. We talk about his early love of horror as a fan growing up, how a chance letter to New Line Cinema opened the door to his first industry job, and how that foundation helped launch one of the most successful horror franchises of all time.Jeffrey shares the story behind the original Final Destination concept, how it evolved into a cultural phenomenon, and what it's been like watching it grow into a cornerstone of modern horror. We dive into his continued passion for the genre, both as a fan and creator, and explore his roles as producer on The Final Wish and Till Death Do Us Part, as well as his writing on Dead Awake and Day of the Dead.He breaks down his writing process, staying inspired in today's fast-changing film landscape, and offers insightful advice (and honest warnings) for aspiring filmmakers.Plus, we explore his interests beyond horror, what keeps him grounded, and what we can expect from him next — including some exciting thoughts on the upcoming Final Destination: Bloodlines slated for release in 2025.A must-listen for horror fans, creatives, and anyone who's ever feared the design of death. Join us as we dissect James Wong's horror classic, digging into the genius of Glen Morgan and Jeffrey Reddick's story. Beginning with Devon Sawa's desperate attempts to cheat death, we'll revisit the iconic cast, including Kerr Smith, Seann William Scott, Kristen Cloke, Tony Todd, Chad Donella, and Amanda Detmer. Prepare for a deep dive into the film's lasting impact and why Death's design is still one of the scariest concepts 25 years later. Directed by James Wong, Final Destination is the supernatural horror film based on a story by Jeffrey Reddick. Rob and Jason rewind to the year 2000 to revisit the first installment in the Final Destination film series. Alex Browning (Devon Sawa), is embarking on a trip to Paris. Alex experiences a premonition - seeing the plane explode moments after leaving the ground. Alex insists that everyone get off the plane and 7 people including Alex, are forced to disembark. All watch as the plane actually explodes in a fireball. He and the other survivors have briefly cheated death, but will not be able to evade their fate for very long. One by one, these fugitives from fate fall victim to the grim reaper.

“I've got a bad feeling about this.”Han Solo (wait…wrong franchise!)Ever just get one of those feelings? A faint chill, a little crawling of the skin that tells you that maybe the path you're currently on is the wrong one and that something terrible is about to happen. You've heard the saying “like someone just walked over my grave,” right? Well, some Hollywood genius decided to build an entire film franchise around this concept with Final Destination and the franchise is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary and gearing up to release its sixth film (Final Destination Bloodlines) later this year! That first Final Destination movie is packed with memorable moments. And gruesome as some of them are, most of the deaths in Final Destination are things we've all lost sleep over, whether it's a mid-air disaster, a bus accident, and others. But unlike other horror movies, it isn't about the deaths so much as it is about Death…the very personification of Death, who isn't amused when someone sees what's coming and escapes their fate. And while you probably don't have to worry too much about Death itself taking revenge on you, the concept of precognition, the ability to see or sense events before they happen, isn't as far-fetched as you might think. We have a scientist to dig into that, and a pop culture expert to make sure that Death's plans all vibe on screen. What have our hosts foreseen? Check out the latest episode of Does it Fly? to find out!https://youtu.be/fOHjYRr4S_ISUGGESTED VIEWING There are five (currently released) Final Destination movies, but we focused our discussion this episode on the first film, 2000's Final Destination from director James Wong who also had a hand in the screenplay with Glen Morgan and Jeffrey Reddick.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! Clairvoyance and PrecognitionJust like Hakeem says about his own experiences, scientific study of these phenomena isn't getting laughed out of the room in academia these days. Will that continue? Well, we've got a feeling…Cognition + Time = ?To be fair, Hakeem didn't present this exactly as an equation, but these are the two key components of precognition. Key to this is “the relativity of simultaneity” which has weirdly come up in other episodes, but is particularly relevant here. See also: The Andromeda ParadoxQuantum EntanglementWe're not entirely sure we follow Hakeem here, but it seems to involve both you and your future self. Which isn't strictly the definition of quantum entanglement, but it's still pretty awesome! The True Story of Final Destination Well…sorta! But as Tamara pointed out, one of the writers did indeed have this movie percolating for a while because of an allegedly real event. Imagine how different things would have been had this movie only ended up as an episode of The X-Files. It could have happened!WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We try not to do TOO many horror movie episodes, lest we incur Tamara's wrath, but check out our episodes on Smile (for some more weird modern horror) and The Wolf Man (for some classic monster action)!FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Nicole then moved to Los Angeles where she continued to study the craft of acting with Susan Peretz (Dog Day Afternoon) at the Third Street Theatre. She was soon cast in Clay Pigeons, directed by David Dobkin, playing opposite Joaquin Phoenix, and also starring Vince Vaughn, Janeane Garofalo, and Georgina Cates. FINAL DESTINATION (2000) follows student Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) who saves the lives of himself, a teacher and several classmates after experiencing a terrifying premonition that their plane bound for Paris will explode shortly after take-off. Afterwards, as each of the survivors begins to die in appalling and unexpected ways, Alex realises that Death is coming for them anyway...When SCREAM forever altered the horror landscape in 1996, with subsequent movies forced to deal with post-modernism and genre aware characters or seem quaint by comparison, horror films accordingly had a period of readjustment to contend with savvy and educated audiences. Taking the structure of a standard slasher flick but replacing the conventional killer who stalks and murders a group of people with the unknowable force of Death and Fate is a clever conceit, allowing the set-up and execution of multiple elaborate set-pieces in which we know a particular character will be killed, just not precisely how. X-FILES writer James Wong directs from a screenplay written by himself, regular collaborator Glen Morgan and Jeffrey Reddick, based on Reddick's initial story which gleefully dispatches our characters in creative ways, whilst encouraging the viewer to conjure up their own horrors with multiple hinted at red-herrings. I've always loved these movies, not just for the fun of the elaborate death sequences or because the impenetrable nature of the antagonist encourages the characters to have earnest conversations about free will and determinism, or because the movie leans just far enough into its outlandish premise without devolving into a load of silly supernatural nonsense but also because they are filled with an atmosphere of pure paranoia and nihilistic existential dread and who doesn't love that?We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com. Today on the show we have screenwriter and director Jeffrey Reddick, who is best known for creating the highly successful Final Destination horror film franchise. The franchise has grossed over $650 Million world-wide. Not bad for an idea that was first conceived for an X-Files episode.Jeffrey also co-wrote the story for, and executive produced, Final Destination 2 (2003). Jeffrey made his first connection to the film industry at age 14 when he wrote a prequel to Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) and mailed it to Bob Shaye, the President of New Line Cinema. Bob returned the material for being unsolicited. But the young man wrote Bob an aggressive reply, which won him over.Bob read the treatment and got back to Jeffrey. Bob, and his assistant, Joy Mann, stayed in contact with Jeffrey for over five years. When he went to The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York at age 19, Bob offered him an internship at New Line Cinema. This internship turned into an 11-year stint at the studio.Aside from Final Destination (2000), which spawned four successful sequels, Jeffrey's other credits include Lions Gate's thriller, Tamara (2005), and the remake of George Romero's classic, Day of the Dead (2008). Jeffrey's directorial debut is Don't Look Back. When a young woman overcoming her traumatic past is among several witnesses who see a man fatally assaulted and don't intervene, they find themselves targeted by someone, or something, out for revenge.Jeffrey has had an amazing career so far and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next.Enjoy my spooky conversation with Jeffrey Reddick.
