Send us a textKatie and Bridget promise to be each other's Huckleberries as they re-watch the cowboy classic: Tombstone! It's a movie all about how when there's no sound law and order the people will go crazy, and having free access to guns will result in murders, and peaceful protests won't do shit when the crazies are still walking around free!!!!! ...We swear this movie takes place in the 1800s! Come along as we meet Wyatt Earp, a lawman who's just trying to retire to the up and coming town of Tombstone Arizona with his brothers and BFF Doc Holiday. When reckless cowboys start messing up the town, Wyatt takes the law into his own hands and basically goes on a Kill Bill inspired killing spree across the desert - with friends! It's got action, laughs, Billy Zane, a kind of love story, and most importantly mustaches. Lots and lots of mustaches. Released in 1993 (the best year for movies), it stars an insane amount of actors including: Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Michael Biehn, Powers Boothe, Dana Delany, Billy Bob Thornton, and Billy Zane.

Together they analyze the 1995 action movie SUDDEN DEATH – a fondly-remembered film with a classic ‘Die Hard on a Blank' premise. After failing to save a young girl during an inferno, troubled former firefighter Darren McCord (Jean-Claude Van Damme) now works as a Fire Marshal for the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. In an effort to mend fences with his estranged kids, McCord scores them tickets to Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final…but this dream outing soon turns into a nightmare when the stadium is taken over by a group of terrorists led by ruthless bad guy Joshua Foss (Powers Boothe), who holds the visiting Vice President (Raymond J. Barry) for ransom along with various other hostages. Phil, Liam and Brendan are all card-carrying members of the Peter Hyams Fan Club, and the guys eagerly discuss their mutual affection for the multi-talented director/writer/cinematographer who helmed SUDDEN DEATH. They also talk about the mysterious appeal of JCVD, Powers Boothe's divisive performance, and the impact of ice hockey on the zeitgeist in the 1990s (including the NHL Sega games). It may not boast the bonafides behind the camera of a more prestige picture like Wyatt Earp, which came out almost six months to the day after Tombstone's Christmas '93 release -- but history has been much kinder to it, in large part because it's a hell of a lot of fun. Consider it redemption for both Russell and Kilmer given their recent fare on the podcast. PLUS: Would you quit your job if they made you go watch Madame Web? This week on the latest and greatest in physical media, Peter Sobczynski joins Erik Childress to talk about a wealth of new titles in 4K. But also a film noir package dedicated to Edward G. Robinson, a restored version of the 1970s French giallo picture and a horror film about a necrophiliac doctor. That is mixed in with new upgrades for Stanley Kubrick's first feature, a classic western with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas and Steven Soderbergh's all too-prescient thriller about a pandemic. Peter discusses a 1980s teen comedy he believes deserves some reappraisal. There is also the pairing of James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart as well as one of the great early films from Walter Hill. 0:00 - Intro 1:42 - Criterion (The Roaring Twenties 4K)) 8:00 - Kino (Film Noir XVII/Fear and Desire 4K/Gunfight at the O.K. Thirty years ago in the lead-up to its release, this Western historical epic was looked upon as "the Other Wyatt Earp" movie with the troubled production as the following year, there was a much hyped bigger budget biopic of Wyatt Earp starring Kevin Costner coming out.  Since they covered similar subjects, both films were in a race for production and this one was first.....with some costs.  Over the time of production, it had three different directors eventually landing on star Kurt Russell who also played Wyatt Earp. (The official director is still listed as George P. Cosmatos) But lo and behold....once it hit theaters in December 1993, people LOVED it!  The story focuses on the Earp family (Bill Paxton and Sam Elliott play his brothers) coming to the gold rush town of Tombstone to strike it rich and they do....but they also make enemies with a gang known as "The Cowboys" lead by Curly Bill played by the late, great Powers Boothe.  The movie became a sleeper cult hit with a following which just grew and grew over time - to most audiences, it was exciting, funny, emotional, and eminently quotable!  Most of the better quotes came from the character of Doc Holliday played by Val Kilmer in an iconic performance.  Let's see how it holds up....Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

A right-wing paranoid fantasy where a Cuban-Russian communist invasion is defeated by child soldiers in Colorado should be a lot more fun than this incoherent slog of a movie. Ricky and his shy, reserved cousin Angela are spending the summer at Camp Arawak, a bargain basement overnight camp in upstate New York run by Mel, cigar-chomping shyster, and staffed by a bunch of adult and teenage degenerates.  Angela is initially withdrawn, occasionally catatonic – but is soon brought out of her shell by Ricky's friend Paul, who takes a liking to Angela in the hopes he might be able to make it with her before summer's end.  But there are forces are at work – forces determined to put the strangely distant Angela in her place.  Bunkmate and camp harlot Judy sees Angela as a weirdo, then a threat when she attracts Paul's attention.  Counselor Meg, who can't get Angela to eat, play sports, or swim, constantly berates Angela for her failure to thrive.  That's when the murders begin, one at a time, first a staffer, then a camper, and on and on.  Mel tries to hide it due to the bad publicity, but as any good camp director knows, murder's bad for business, and the more we learn about Angela's murky past, the more things at Camp Arawak take a turn… for the deadly. After celebrating their landmark 250th episode, the Good Brothers are right back to work reviewing "Secret Society Part I & II" which is a Season 2 Justice League episode that features another iteration of villains determined to take down the Justice League. The hosts talk a plot that features dissension in the ranks of the League, but are quick to point out the lack of set up and follow up for the premise. Also discussed is the incredible and nearly non-stop action in both parts balanced with the rather off-model characters in the downbeats. Wrapping up the episode, Cal & Liam talk about the Michael McCuistion composed soundtrack and a notable breakdown of Powers Boothe's unforgettable unhinged speeches as Gorilla Grodd. All of this and a preview of next week's synergistic review and much more await you on this week's DCAU Review!
