We met Dan Jeannotte at Trek Long Island, and one conversation was all it took to know we wanted him on the podcast. Whether you know him as George "Sam" Kirk on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Arno Dorian from Assassin's Creed: Unity, or from his Hallmark fan favorites, Dan has done it all. In this episode, we talk about Star Trek, Assassin's Creed, Hallmark, theater, voice acting, and the craft of storytelling. Along the way, Dan shares what it's like joining the Star Trek family, why Sam Kirk has become a fan favorite, and how one of gaming's most beloved characters earned him both an ACTRA Award and a Funko Pop. But, here’s a local story of interest: After seven years of planning, a new seniors lodge will be built in Vulcan to replace the Peter Dawson Lodge, which was built in 1963. According to spokesperson Kelly Nelson, while the Dawson Lodge is reportedly in “really good shape,” it no longer meets current building standards. “The rooms are too small, we have inside rooms without any windows to the outside,” said Nelson, adding seniors don't want to move in until they have a room with a window. The new facility, expected to open in 2028, will have 62 affordable-housing units. Vulcan Mayor Tom Grant said Thursday the new facility will be a “win-win” for the community. This week on Science Faction, life milestones collide with pop culture as Ben celebrates finally paying off over two decades of student loans while Devon contemplates a lifetime of payments. The crew also dives into Star Trek, Mothership, San Diego Comic-Con reveals, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Cowboy Bebop, and an unexpectedly deep rabbit hole exploring the technology behind the original Jurassic Park. As always, it's a mix of real life, science fiction, and everything wonderfully nerdy in between. Real Life Ben reached a major milestone this week by finally paying off his student loans after 21 years. It's the kind of accomplishment that deserves a celebration, especially considering how many people are still carrying student debt decades after graduating. Devon balanced out the optimism by joking that he's probably never going to finish paying his off. Steven has been spending time with Mothership: Wages of Sin, another adventure for the acclaimed sci-fi horror RPG. If you're interested in checking it out, you can find it here: https://www.tuesdayknightgames.com/collections/mothership Ben also finds himself in an unfamiliar situation: waiting on absolutely nothing. Instead, he talked about his latest favorite gadget, the Clicks Keyboard for smartphones: https://www.clicks.tech/powerkeyboard The Star Trek discussion continued with Star Trek: Axanar – The Gathering Storm, where Faran Tahir's appearance was a welcome surprise. You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFpTiIHNTJ0&pp=ygUGYXhhbmFy That naturally led into Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4's episode Valles Marineris, which managed to answer the timeless question: What if Star Trek had dinosaurs? The crew discusses whether that's exactly what Trek needed—or never knew it needed. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Valles_Marineris_(episode) Future or Now San Diego Comic-Con brought plenty of announcements to unpack, including new reveals surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jean-Pool, and the surprise pairing of Ghost Rider and Starfighter. Ryan Reynolds continues to find creative ways to keep Deadpool in the spotlight. https://entertainmentnow.com/marvel-studios-movies-comics/ryan-reynolds-sdcc-deadpool/ Ben also rounds up several pieces of Avatar: The Last Airbender news, including the upcoming animated Aang film and the newly announced sequel series, Avatar: Seven Havens. https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/avatar-aang-the-last-airbender-in-theaters https://www.inverse.com/entertainment/avatar-seven-havens-release-date-revealed After finally finishing the original Cowboy Bebop anime and its movie, Ben shares his thoughts on why the series has remained such a classic for nearly three decades. The conversation then shifts into one of the nerdiest rabbit holes imaginable: a painstaking technical breakdown of every computer seen in the original Jurassic Park. It's a fascinating look at how the filmmakers blended real hardware with Hollywood magic. https://fabiensanglard.net/jurrasic_park_computers/index.html That naturally prompts Devon to shout, "SAM NEILL DIED! LET'S TALK ABOUT IT!" before everyone remembers they're actually talking about his characters. The discussion quickly turns into a debate over Sam Neill's best science fiction performance. Is it the cosmic horror masterpiece Event Horizon (1997), or the vampire thriller Daybreakers (2009)? To wrap things up, the crew also highlights Jurassic Systems, a fan project dedicated to faithfully recreating the iconic computer interfaces from Jurassic Park. https://www.jurassicsystems.com/ As always, expect plenty of tangents, questionable opinions, and passionate debates about dinosaurs, spaceships, anime, and why fictional operating systems from 1993 still look cooler than the ones we use today.

Welcome to another exciting episode of Geeks Corner! This week, Mr. Daps and Caitie Bear return to the studio to chat about Disneyland After Dark events, look ahead to upcoming Disney animation and sci-fi trailers, and face off in a brutal round of Disney "This or That." Episode HighlightsHere is what you can look forward to in this week's episode:The History of "Welcome": The show kicks off with a fun park music fact: Phil Collins originally wrote the song "Welcome" for the 2003 animated feature Brother Bear, which was later famously utilized in Disneyland's Parade of Dreams starting in 2005. The hosts reminisce about the moose movie, share a clip of the song, and remember the incredible hype of waiting hours on Main Street for that parade back in 2005.CHOC Walk 2026: Mark your calendars for August 2nd! The team shares details on the annual CHOC Walk through the park to raise funds and awareness for the Children's Hospital of Orange County. Daps Magic has been supporting this cause for nearly twenty years, and the hosts explain how you can help out—even if you aren't a morning person—by registering as a "sleeping bear" to raise funds from home.Disneyland After Dark: Pride Night Review: Mr. Daps and Caitie Bear share their experiences from the first night of Pride Night, praising its positive, celebratory, and uplifting environment. Highlights include friendship bracelet trading, character sightings like Tinker Bell and her fairy friends performing "Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust," and a structured Royal Theater queue featuring Princess Aurora, Maleficent, and the Three Good Fairies. They also brainstorm an idea for a fully live-action Wonderland face character group featuring the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter.First Teaser for Hexed: The duo breaks down the brand-new teaser trailer for Walt Disney Animation Studios' upcoming November film, Hexed. While the magic and witchcraft premise seems promising, Caitie Bear notes the character animation reminds her heavily of Onward and Frozen, while Mr. Daps questions if the design leans a bit too close to DreamWorks rather than traditional Disney.Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Trailer: Caitie Bear, who recently finished crying through the end of season 3, shares her immense excitement for the final trailer of Strange New Worlds Season 4. The hosts discuss how well the series has built Captain Pike's backstory, planted the seeds for Kirk's future crew, and kept the zany, sci-fi spirit of the franchise alive.A High-Stakes Game of "This or That": Mr. Daps puts Caitie Bear on the spot with five quick-fire comparisons:The Week in GeekCHOC Walk - Join our Team - https://www.chocwalk.org/dapsmagic Caption of the Week Photo https://dapsmagic.com/2026/06/jammitors-caption-of-the-week/ Disneyland After Dark: Pride Nite https://dapsmagic.com/2026/06/guide-disneyland-after-dark-pride-nite-2026/ Hexed Teaser Trailer https://dapsmagic.com/2026/06/teaser-trailer-released-for-hexed-by-walt-disney-animation-studios/ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Trailer https://dapsmagic.com/2026/06/new-trailer-for-star-trek-strange-new-worlds-takes-enterprise-crew-closer-to-original-series/Connect With Us!Read the Latest News: Check out all the Disney and geek news as it happens at DapsMagic.com.Join the Post-Show: Head over to DapsHQ.com immediately following the episode to catch Daps After Dark and access exclusive community content.Don't Miss Photoniks: Tune in this Friday for a special Father's Day episode of Photoniks featuring Mr. Daps, Clocky, and a very special appearance by Mr. Daps' father.Subscribe on YouTube: Stay tuned for a massive wave of upcoming travel videos from Pride Night, Disneyland Paris, Tokyo Disney Resort, and Hong Kong Disneyland .
The AI hype train keeps shedding wheels this week. KPMG managed to publish a report about the transformative power of AI that was apparently riddled with hallucinations, fake citations, and imaginary products, proving once again that asking a stochastic parrot to do your homework is not a substitute for actual research. Meanwhile, Americans are using AI faster than ever while trusting it less than ever, OpenAI somehow turned $13 billion in revenue into losses that would make a dot-com CFO blush, and Silicon Valley CEOs have quietly stopped promising to replace all workers with AI. Not because they've changed their minds, mind you, just because they discovered that telling employees they're obsolete is terrible for morale and stock prices. Add in protests dogging Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Meta employees revolting against soul-crushing AI evaluation work, and the message is clear: the future is here, and everyone involved seems miserable. We then return to one of the founding principles of Grumpy Old Geeks: never build your house on somebody else's land. Anthropic learned that lesson the hard way when its AI models reportedly got caught in a geopolitical and regulatory tug-of-war involving Amazon, the U.S. government, and national security concerns. World leaders are now openly questioning whether American AI platforms can be trusted if access can be revoked overnight. The same platform-risk story pops up again as Meta launches AI-powered search across Facebook's oceans of questionable user-generated content. Remember kids: when you pitch your tent in someone else's backyard, don't act shocked when they turn on the sprinklers. From the Injustice Files, the hits keep coming. The Atlantic revealed the staggering scale of copyrighted music used to train AI systems, Hollywood inches closer to becoming a monopoly-themed amusement park, and the DOJ is backing xAI in a pollution lawsuit while reports emerge that Grok-assisted systems played a role in military operations. Elon keeps collecting legal losses, SpaceX buys Cursor for an eye-watering $60 billion, and Trump is threatening French wine over tech taxes while simultaneously promoting crypto through a UFC event at the White House. We wrap with Britain banning social media for kids under 16, hackers stealing entire Roblox games, Fox buying Roku, the return of human narrators at Blinkist, a gloriously anti-social-media flip phone from Commodore, and a reminder that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is still one of the few things keeping the future worth looking forward to.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.Shopify - Sign up for your one-dollar-per-month trial today at Shopify.com/grumpyPrivate Internet Access - Go to GOG.Show/vpn and sign up today. The producers are teasing a return to more classic, character-driven Trek storytelling, no season-long "big bad," more focus on Kirk and Spock, plus La'an and Ortegas — and yes, the puppet episode is still happening. We also discuss the William Shatner alternate Kirk story that almost happened but never came together. Want to keep the conversation going? A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away... Trekcast took a week off. But now we're back! This week, we're reviewing Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, the first Star Wars movie to hit theaters in seven years! Was it worth the wait? Is this the way, or just an okay? Plus, the countdown to Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 is on, and executive producer Akiva Goldsman is revealing new details about what's ahead for Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise. We'll also discuss a major AI-related blunder from Paramount+ that's getting fans talking. And believe it or not, we almost got to see William Shatner return as Captain James T. Kirk. What happened? We'll break down the story and what could have been. The film tells the story of Alex Rogan (Lance Guest), a teenager who, after winning the high score in an arcade game that's secretly a simulation test, is recruited by an alien defense force to fight in an interstellar war. It also features Dan O'Herlihy, Catherine Mary Stewart, and Robert Preston in his final role in a theatrical film. The character of Centauri, a "lovable con-man", was written with him in mind and was a nod to his most famous role as Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man (1962).[3]The Last Starfighters concept reelhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tAvN9000o4A&t=161sLance Guest reveals plans for The Last Starfighter sequel from AnyGoodFilms?https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-6E5kRlbQ8Trekcast: The Galaxy's Most Unpredictable Star Trek Podcast!Welcome to Trekcast, the galaxy's most unpredictable Star Trek podcast! Frank is joined by Scott for a packed episode that jumps from Hollywood headlines to deep-dive reviews. The conversation opens with a fun Question of the Week about how the Oscars could feel more relevant, then shifts into the latest talk around a possible Firefly animated revival, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, and Amazon putting key Prime Video features behind a higher-priced tier. In the back half, Frank and Scott get into full review mode with One Piece Season 2 and World of Warcraft: Midnight, comparing what works, what frustrates them, and why both projects still have them invested. Timestamps and Topics 00:00 Intro and welcoming Scott back to the show 00:15 Question of the Week: what new Oscars category would make the awards more relevant? 03:02 Nathan Fillion says a Firefly animated series is in development 07:35 The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and Kate Winslet joining the cast 11:44 Amazon Prime Video puts 4K and premium features behind a pricier ad-free tier 15:23 One Piece Season 2 review and why the live-action series keeps winning them over 31:15 Quick sponsor mention for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 home release 31:54 World of Warcraft: Midnight review, zone impressions, nostalgia, and housing talk 40:18 Geek Freaks Network updates and what else is happening across the shows 41:23 Weekly recommendations, including One Piece, Star Trek, and Invincible 42:26 Outro Episode Summary This week's episode balances fun fandom talk with real critique. Frank and Scott debate whether the Oscars need categories tied more closely to online culture and cultural impact, then get into the surprising news that Firefly may be returning in animated form. From there, they discuss how much excitement there really is for a new Lord of the Rings film centered on Gollum, especially with Kate Winslet now attached. The Prime Video pricing conversation turns into a bigger discussion about streaming fatigue and what audiences are willing to pay for. The second half is driven by reviews. Frank and Scott are both enthusiastic about One Piece Season 2, praising how the live-action adaptation embraces the weirdness, heart, and adventure of the anime while still feeling accessible. They also break down World of Warcraft: Midnight, highlighting the strength of Silvermoon, the unevenness of certain zones, and Blizzard's growing sense of confidence even when every choice does not fully land. Key Takeaways Frank thinks the Oscars could use a category centered on cultural impact, especially for blockbusters and genre films. Scott likes the idea of bringing in younger audiences through categories tied to online filmmaking and long-form digital content. A Firefly animated revival feels like a compromise, but maybe the right one given the cast's age and the current strength of adult animation. Frank is surprised that The Hunt for Gollum is not generating more conversation, especially for a new Lord of the Rings movie. Prime Video's new pricing structure feels like another example of streaming services pushing viewers too far. One Piece Season 2 won both hosts over by fully committing to the tone, style, and emotional logic of the anime. Scott gives One Piece Season 2 a 10/10, while Frank lands at a 9/10 because the fun outweighs nearly every complaint. World of Warcraft: Midnight earns a 7/10 from both hosts, with strong atmosphere and story beats but uneven feature execution. Silvermoon is one of the biggest highlights of Midnight, especially for longtime Horde players. Housing in Midnight got plenty of attention before launch, but neither host seems deeply invested in it yet. Memorable Quotes "I would go with a category that's like cultural impact." "When they said they were making a live action One Piece, I was like, there's no way this works." "It's just pure escapism." "When you see it, you'll see it." Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 When Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered as a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery, many fans were over the moon with the return to episodic televisions with tie-ins to The Original Series. For a time, it felt as if Trek's golden age was back. But as the series evolved, the producers and writers began to see it as a playground for experimental storytelling within the Roddenberry framework. In this episode of The Ready Room, hosts C Bryan Jones and Larry Nemecek look back at Season 3 and ask how well the limited 10-episode canvas was used and how the writers' strike impacted the quality of the stories and continuity of the stories as we examine each episode one by one. The internet continues its chaotic march, with a TikTok deal potentially happening (for real this time, maybe), while LimeWire bought the Fyre Fest brand, because more viruses are always a great idea. Corporate America is going full AI-bro with massive layoffs at Fiverr, xAI, and Google, while OpenAI reveals people are using ChatGPT for pretty much everything but coding. Age verification is coming to apps and online services in California and New York, because apparently, teenagers need protection (after the fact). Elsewhere, nudists have declared war on SpaceX over rocket launches, and fans are ditching Elon since he started being so insufferable; even a Tesla engineer quit and roasted him spectacularly, all while NHTSA investigates Tesla's fire-prone door handles. In the world of entertainment, we're catching up on Wednesday and Foundation S3 (just pretend the books never existed, your brain will be rewired!), and Upload wrapped up its truncated season nicely. The 2003 Freaky Friday was a fun, nostalgic trip through early 2000s L.A., reminding us of all the cool places that are now just... gone. Alien: Earth and Gen V S2 are on our watchlist, and we'll see if Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 lives up to its promise. The Witcher S4, featuring Liam Hemsworth as Geralt (aka the Dick Switch), drops in October, with Laurence Fishburne making it somewhat palatable. The Lilith Fair documentary is peak 90s, and Meta's latest dystopian product was so bad it made the Cybertruck demo look good. Apple's new AI features are cool, but the iOS 26 "liquid glass" update and its awful crossfade feature are less so; also, meditation apparently has a dark side, but binaural beats might just make you rave. Publishers Clearing House's bankruptcy means "forever" winners won't get paid (always take the lump sum!); international sellers are charging absurd shipping to avoid American buyers; and the deepfake Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kills Darth Maul (Live Action) is surprisingly good.Steve Martin's Born Standing Up is still great life advice, and the Carrot App the Musical is, against all odds, amazing. Robert Redford has sadly passed, a legend who gave us Sneakers, and L.A.'s own Clayton Kershaw is retiring at the end of the season, a true one-team legend who deserves all the accolades.Sponsors:MasterClass - Right now, our listeners get an additional 15% off any annual membership at MASTERCLASS.com/GRUMPYOLDGEEKS.
