Alicia Bell's word for this year: Surrender. When Alicia was promoted to her dream job of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at GraceWorks Ministries, she was shocked to have a cancer scare at the same time. Uncomfortable ambiguity was amplified when Alicia was faced with unexpected challenges in her family. While Alicia was blessed to have Jesus in her heart since she was young, this time required even greater trust. Alicia began to let go of her expectations, plans and very self in order to live the will of God and allow the Holy Spirit to do miraculous work. Alicia experienced how God's grace reaches to the innermost details of her heart and life. In this Easter podcast, learn how God's grace really does work. GraceWorks' mission is to share God's grace, through food, shelter and support. It does this by neighbor serving neighbor. Learn more at: https://www.graceworkstn.org.

Today Dan and Ellen talk to Peter Bhatia.  Bhatia is a Pulitzer Prize-winning editor who is now chief executive officer of the Houston Landing, a nonprofit, non-partisan, no-paywall local news site that launched in spring of 2023. He has also been editor and vice president at the Detroit Free Press, from 2017-2023, and served as a regional editor for Gannett, supervising newsrooms in Michigan and Ohio. His resume includes helping lead newsrooms that won 10 Pulitzer Prizes. He is the first journalist of South Asian heritage to lead a major daily newspaper in the U.S. He has also been involved in some recent controversies. There's much to talk about. In Quick Takes, Dan talks about an important press-freedom case in Mississippi. The former governor, Phil Bryant, is suing Mississippi Today over its Pulitzer Prize-winning series on a state welfare scandal that got national attention and even managed to touch former NFL quarterback Brett Favre. Bryant says he needs access to Today's internal documents in order to prove his libel case, and a state judge has agreed. Mississippi Today has decided to take the case to the state Supreme Court. It's a risk, because it will set a precedent in the Magnolia State — for better or worse. Ellen highlights an interview with Alicia Bell, the director of the Racial Equity in Journalism Fund at Borealis Philanthropy. Bell talked to Editor & Publisher about her upcoming report on what it will take to build a thriving local news ecosystem for BIPOC communities across the country. Her estimate: it will take somewhere between $380 million to $7.1 billion annually to truly fund BIPOC journalism across the U.S. That's a big number, but Borealis is a pioneer in this space, and it's important research as national efforts like Press Forward roll out.

We've talked at some length this season about the role of the media — all kinds of media — in fostering hate and division, and the massive opportunity that exists in our communication spaces to lift one another, to repair, to rebuild. Our guest this week is someone whose steeped in a major movement to rewrite media's story in our society. Alicia Bell is director of Media 2070. What started as a research essay detailing the role that media has played in anti-Black racism and harm has grown into a growing consortium of media makers and activists, collectively working toward media reparations. What does Media 2070 say about themselves? This work is an effort to radically transform who has the capital to tell their own stories by 2070 — 50 years from today. This work is an idea, welcoming critique and feedback. It is liberation work within a lineage of civil-rights activism, racial-justice organizing and calls for reparations. This work makes visible the ways in which the media have taken part in and supported state violence and harm against Black people.Anti-Blackness is a global issue and we will never build the critical mass to transform our culture if we don't marshal the political and cultural resources required to address it in our media, first. Alicia and her team are not just talking and writing about the need for reparations, they're actively working on that change. They partnered with more than twenty lawmakers to call on the FCC to examine how media-related policies have harmed black communities and other people of color. They've created tools for newsrooms and journalists to assess their own cultural norms, and pledge to build more radically inclusive practices. They've presented the need for culture change in a way media itself never could have done.Alicia is at the heart of this reckoning, one designed to move newsrooms to a place that can care for and support all people in the community and finally address the issue of anti-Blackness that has been present in our media for hundreds of years. We can't wait to introduce you to this powerful force standing up for the future of a free and just press, Alicia Bell of Media 2070.Links & NotesMedia 2070Read the original research essay: Media 2070: An Invitation to Dream Up Media ReparationsFollow @aliciacbell on Twitter

Alicia Bell is a Kinesiologist, Certified Personal Trainer, Online Coach, Figure Athlete, Track & Field Coach, YouTuber, Fitness Model and is based in Toronto. She has cultivated a strong social media presence, and does work as a public speaker. She is also has a goal of becoming an IFBB Figure Pro.  Alicia may have always been an athlete, but she’s had her own share of challenges along the way that seemed to be trying to prevent her from reaching her fitness goals. She never let it get the best of her and always picked herself up each and every time and kept going. First, she had a full ACL tear and ruptured her meniscus while fracturing the tibia at its plateau. She had multiple surgeries to repair, restore function and remove scar tissue. To this day she still don’t have full range of motion of her knee. The following spring she was on my way to coach her track team and was hit by a car while on her motorcycle, sending her flying off her bike, re-injuring the knee plus sustaining whiplash, back strain, road rash and sliced her hand which was caught in the street car tracks. Finally, as she was still going through physio for the motorcycle accident, she found out she had a migrating tumor that required 7 rounds of chemotherapy to resolve. Through all this, nothing stopped her and she even started a competition prep during the chemotherapy treatments! Alicia is proof that sometimes the journey can be challenging. There may be obstacles in your way but persevere, follow the plan, find a support system and be honest! Good things will happen and your consistency will pay off! Don’t give up and don’t let anyone or any circumstance bring you down. Alicia was named one of Canada’s TOP Trainers by IMPACT magazine and landed the 2018 Jan/Feb Magazine Cover. She's a nationally recognized track and field coach, having coached Team Canada to 13 medals at the 2013 Maccabi games in Israel. She has owned and operated her own track and field club and was  the head coach of Ryerson University for the 2016-2017 season. She now is an NCCP facilitator and coaches private speed training sessions upon request. Alicia has over 10 years of practical and educational experience as a trainer and is a  published fitness content creator and model for various health and fitness products and magazines.
