Boys are falling behind in reading — and the consequences are staggering. In this episode, we share an excerpt from Your Kid’s Next Read podcast with Allison Tait, Megan Daley, Matt Stanton and Dr Justin Coulson unpacking the crisis in boys’ literacy. From screen addiction to motivation, we explore why reading has lost its spark for boys — and how parents can bring stories back to life at home. You can listen to the full conversation here: Boys and Reading. KEY POINTS: Reading rates are plummeting across the board — but boys are struggling most. The literacy gap between boys and girls now equals a full academic year by Year 9. Why screens are hijacking boys’ brains — and how to reset attention spans. The 3 ingredients that make kids want to read: autonomy, competence, and connection. Why dads matter most — boys become readers when they see men reading. The power of reading with your kids, not just telling them to read. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “For boys to love reading, they’ve got to see men who love reading.” — Dr Justin Coulson RESOURCES MENTIONED: Your Kid’s Next Read podcast with Allison Tait & Megan Daley Raising Readers by Megan Daley Punished by Rewards by Alfie Kohn ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Model reading — let your kids catch you with a book. Choose connection over correction — read with them, not at them. Follow their interests — comics, sports magazines, or game guides still count. Build confidence — help your child feel capable with age-appropriate reads. Make it social — talk about stories, characters, and favourite moments. We are kicking off a ‘series' for the first time on the show - where I bring on guests to talk about the same topic over the coming weeks, and that topic is REINVENTION! It's a topic I get asked about a lot; how I reinvented myself, why, the process, and I wanted to talk to others about their incredible transitions and hear about their reinvention stories too. So, our first guest in this series is my dear friend, incredible entrepreneur and fellow creative studio buddy, Valerie Khoo who I'm sitting with here in our joint creative studio, Atelier 9 in Avalon. Valerie is an award-winning feature writer who is also CEO of the Australian Writers' Centre - an organisation she founded over 18 years ago. Her latest books are So you want to be a writer (co-authored with Allison Tait) and Power Stories: The 8 Stories You MUST Tell to Build an Epic Business. Val & I always have such incredible conversations whist we are painting and potting in our studio and it was fitting that she kicks off this series about Reinvention as she's had a fascinating journey that's led her to where she is today. There was so much GOLD in this chat that I've split it into two parts - let's dive in and here some of the wisdom this incredible woman offers us in part one. _______Also - HUGE News!! I'm excited to announce that the One Question podcast now has a YouTube channel. It will be wonderful to be able to bring you visual content of our interviews as well. Welcome to a very special episode of Writes4Women. Last week I had the pleasure of recording this episode with Dani Vee, Claudine Tinellis, Ashley Kalagian Blunt and Allison Tait. Those of you who love to listen to writing and reading podcasts might recognize some of those names. We were getting together to celebrate the 400th episode of the Words and Nerds podcast produced and hosted by Dani Vee. It was really such a pleasure to be able to celebrate this occasion with Dani. She's a prolific podcaster, a fabulous author, reader, and promoter of Australian writing. Dani chose to release this episode on the anniversary week of her very, very special podcast. She also very kindly offered for us to release the episode on our own feeds, and I thought this would be a great opportunity for you to hear from myself and the other podcasters on why we do what we do, and how we do it. Through her years of expansive journalistic experience in the small business and entrepreneurial space she has seen the trajectory between those who tell a good story and thereby become a highly successful online presence and those who simply fade away. She explains how to produce useful and powerful content because “you can't outsource your thought leadership”. We delve into being why being “helpful” is the key to being relevant in a cluttered online space. If you are having trouble identifying your brands “hook” or you don't know if your story feels authentic then you do not want to miss this fascinating discussion about leadership, branding, social media, digital profiles and personal profiles with Valerie Khoo, Founder and CEO of Australia Writers Centre.
