The AI hype-machine: Canada's ill-advised 'national sprint' on artificial intelligence

In episode six of the Courage My Friends' season nine, we welcome impact strategist with Animikii, Indigenous Technology, Jeff Doctor, technology and human rights lawyer with Tekhnos Law and senior fellow with The Citizen Lab, Cynthia Khoo, senior researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, Hadrian Mertins-Kirkwood.  We discuss Canada's accelerated approach to artificial intelligence and the mobilization of civil society groups against it, multiple impacts of largely unregulated AI on people, planet and democracy, Indigenous perspectives on data sovereignty and digital colonialism and the meaning of AI beyond the hype. Reflecting on the government's accelerated AI development, Mertins-Kirkwood says: "There's definitely a distinct moment that's happening right now. A particular hype cycle, a push to adopt this current iteration of 'artificial intelligence', whatever that means … The question is why are we doing it. The way that the federal government in particular talks about AI is frankly very ideological … We need to adopt it for its own sake, independent of what that actually means … We're just kind of rushing without having a clear sense of where we're going." On civil society's objection to the "national sprint" consultation on AI, Khoo says: "...As people who are familiar with this field and topic … we're kind of appalled … AI has spread through so many spheres of society, it's not just a tech issue anymore, it's a whatever issue you care about … This 30-day "sprint" with leading language and incredibly narrow scoping from our government, it's frankly embarrassing. And just shows they're not really taking seriously the … empirically demonstrated … harms of AI and what's really at stake for everyone across the country. '" On the subject of data sovereignty, Doctor says: "Every technology has politics, Every technology is a product of its time … And enter this current moment where this magic bean of AI, this bundle of excuses comes together, that, oh we have to extract more, we have to mine more, we have to use more energy. As an Indigenous person this is nothing new to me … Indigenous territories, lands and peoples as sacrifice zones … for the greater good or for national sovereignty … Who's national sovereignty?" About today's guests:  Jeff Doctor is a Cayuga Nation citizen from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory. As an Impact Strategist with Animikii, Jeff works with Indigenous Peoples across Turtle Island to develop web applications that support their self-determination and digital sovereignty. Jeff also volunteers with Protect the Tract: a Haudenosaunee grassroots project that promotes healthy land stewardship of the Haldimand Tract, and is an artist-in-residence at the University of Toronto as a member of the Akni:ho'gwa:s Artist Collective.Jeff has an MA in sociology and a decade of experience supporting Indigenous data sovereignty from the ground up. His focus is improving practical Indigenous data governance through advocacy, counter-mapping, and building appropriate, ethical software that helps Indigenous Peoples get their land, cash, and data back. Cynthia Khoo is a technology and human rights lawyer at Tekhnos Law, and a senior fellow at the Citizen Lab (University of Toronto). Previously, she was a senior associate at Georgetown Law's Center on Privacy & Technology in Washington, DC. Cynthia's legal practice, research, and expertise focuses on how the Internet and emerging technologies impact the human rights of historically marginalized groups, in particular their rights to privacy, equality, and freedom of expression. She holds a J.D. from the University of Victoria and LL.M. (Law and Technology) from the University of Ottawa, where she worked as junior counsel at and represented the Samuelson-Glushko Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic (CIPPIC) as an intervener in cases before the Supreme Court of Canada. Hadrian Mertins-Kirkwood is a senior researcher with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, where he focuses on climate, artificial intelligence and economic policy. Julie Yim and Marcus Khoo, the dynamic duo behind Lilin+Co, have transformed a simple passion into Malaysia's leading artisanal candle brand. Their journey began in 2015 when Julie attended a wedding in Melbourne and received a soy candle as a favor. Inspired by its eco-friendly nature and superior scent, she envisioned introducing similar products to the Malaysian market .   In 2016, after extensive research and development, Julie and Marcus launched Lilin+Co. They identified a gap in the market for affordable yet high-quality soy candles and set out to fill it. Initially balancing their day jobs, Julie in publishing and Marcus in a corporate role, they started by participating in weekend markets and establishing an online presence. Their commitment to quality and sustainability quickly garnered attention .   A pivotal moment came in 2019 when Marcus took a three-month sabbatical to test the waters of full-time entrepreneurship. To their surprise, the pandemic boosted sales, leading them to open their first showroom, Ol-Factory 1.0, in Petaling Jaya .   At Lilin+Co, sustainability is paramount. Their soy candles are eco-friendly and non-toxic, and their diffusers use a plant-based solvent that evaporates slower compared to alcohol-based diffusers, making them safe to use at home even around pets. The wicks are responsibly sourced from FSC-certified mills, and all online orders are packed using 100% paper materials .   Julie and Marcus's dedication to quality and sustainability has not only established Lilin+Co as a household name in Malaysia but also set a new standard in the artisanal candle industry.   Follow us on Social Media: XiaoHongShu: https://shorturl.at/uVBZO Instagram: https://shorturl.at/hT6wQ TikTok (Hiredly): https://shorturl.at/0gum2 TikTok (Grow With Hiredly): https://shorturl.at/gAObT Dou Yin: https://v.douyin.com/uQlXc4X0vaY/0@9.com

Would you die for your passion? Most wouldn't but for 58-year-old Swee Chiow, Singapore's first professional adventurer, it's a question he must face every day.And it all began when he caught a glimpse of Mount Everest from a plane. He was working in IT (Singapore Airlines) then, but he decided from that one glimpse that he wanted to climb Mount Everest - a dream that took him a mere 10 years to achieve! The journey was hard.He knew nothing. So he read many books & even went on a 10-day mountaineering course at Mt Cook that he flunked because he wasn't fit enough! In 1998, he joined Singapore's first Mount Everest expedition. It was a disaster at first because:❌ Their tent collapsed during a freak storm❌ Their first attempt at the South Pole failed as they didn't have enough rope - the Singapore media hounded them & issued headlines declaring that the expedition had failedBut they didn't give up.Their second attempt was a success! But an exhausting one. In the midst of the media glory, Swee Chiow knew he had to take advantage of it so he immediately launched Singapore's first Antarctic expedition.Since then, he has:Climbed Everest x3 and K28,000km cycle from SG → Beijing (China) = 2003Swam 40 km across Malacca StraitsKayaked 3,000km across PhilippinesBroke his first Guinness World Records for the longest scuba submergence (220 hours)Rollerbladed 6,000km from Hanoi SG in 94 days (and broke the Guinness World Records in 2008)Highlights:3:34 Why Why Why?!4:12 Fear of heights5:00 Computer science in Kansas6:11 Saw Mount Everest from a plane6:51 Not giving up after 10 years7:24 The mountain is magical & spiritual?!9:06 Lessons learned10:27 Altitude sickness / AMS12:04 Pulling Singapore's first Everest expedition together13:25 You can't fail!14:19 What should people know about Everest?16:45 Quitting his day job17:45 Antarctica19:38 Commercialising his adventure business20:32 Swee Chiow's value proposition?22:02 How he builds trust with his clients24:11 Risks & death25:11 Any trick to staying calm?25:24 Drifting to Taiwan & near certain death27:37 Never let your ego take over29:28 Dealing with the media30:55 Never doing K2 again32:19 The ghosts at Tibet's Xishapengma36:12 Adventurers hogging the limelight37:04 Collaborating with AirAsia X40:16 How Swee Chiow decides on his adventures41:43 Advice for those in their 30s45:28 What's next?46:26 The second act of his career?47:36 Leadership principles to be an effective guide for his team49:15 What drives you to push yourself to the extreme each time?50:23 Do you feel like you've found your why?51:06 What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind?51:27 What are the most important qualities of a successful person?Special thanks to Limpeh Studios (Hepmil Media) for the studio!

I'm thrilled to sit down with Nina Khoo, a Sensitive Leadership Coach and a Master NLP Coach who helps HSPs understand and embrace their unique wiring so they can become confident and empathetic leaders. It's common for Highly Sensitive People to believe that they're not capable of effective leadership and struggle with overwhelm, perfectionism, and second-guessing. Nina and I uncover how our greatest strengths can sometimes be the traits we feel most self-conscious about and pose a central question: How does a Highly Sensitive Person protect their gifts as a leader? As an empath and an HSP, your brain is physiologically wired to take more information in and process it more deeply, which can be an incredibly powerful leadership skill. Yet, it can also lead to overwhelm and self-criticism. Through our conversation, you'll learn how to approach leadership in a more sensitive, empathetic, and compassionate way so you can own your gifts and make a bigger difference in the world.  Topics: Why HSPs feel that they're not capable of being effective leaders and how the traits you may feel self-conscious about can be your greatest gifts  Overcoming overwhelm, perfectionism, and the tendency to subordinate your wisdom as an empathetic leader Cultivating awareness of how your brain is psychologically wired as a Highly Sensitive Person and learning how to use your unique wiring to your advantage Getting out of the procrastination and self-doubt cycle, learning how to own your HSP gifts instead of minimizing them, and coming back to your true why The future of business leadership and why the world needs more sensitive, compassionate, and empathetic leaders   Episode Resources: Join us on March 11th at 12pm ET for our monthly Non-Networking Power Hour for Empath Entrepreneurs with our UNBOUNDED Mastermind Community for deep connections and meaningful support. Today I'm bringing you their new novel The Spider and Her Demons. The Spider and Her Demons High School can be hard at the best of times but somehow Zhi juggles study, tutoring and working in her Aunt's dumpling shop. Zhi's Aunt Mei has sacrificed a lot so that Zhi can attend a private school and all she asks in return is that Zhi maintain an 85 point grade average and hide the fact she has fangs, spinnerets and four prehensile limbs that emerge from her back! This story is wild! We dive headfirst into the world of Zhi as she navigates being a teenager with more than the regular amount of challenge to her life. The world building here is terrific. Zhi attends a (fictional) Sydney private school, whilst working in a dumpling shop in Chinatown. Everything is laid out for local readers to orient themselves to this world, which makes it particularly effective when it all goes sideways. On the one hand there is the regular amount of teenage angst and we ride alongside Zhi as she and her friends are just normally being normal. On the other we are treated to Zhi's anxiety as she revels in this normalcy, even as she feels it can't last. The aforementioned spider biology is a cause for constant stress and Zhi knows she has to be less than normal, she has to be practically invisible. The Spider and Her Demons takes the reader into the world of Zhi's hyper consciousness of her body. We are shown that who she is is both exceptional and terrifyingly normal. Zhi's daily routine to style her hair so that it hides her spider eyes is not so far any teenagers styling their way into some semblance of what they hope their peers will deem acceptable.  The difference Zhi struggles to accept in herself is only highlighted by the constant gossip surrounding the most popular girl in school, Dior Panne-Nix. While Zhi just wants to be like everyone else she must also confront that she doesn't even exist in Dior's orbit. Of course all this is primed for chaos as Zhi's secret is threatened one fateful night and she finds herself thrown into the path of Dior! The Spider and Her Demons works both as a fantastical new world to discover and as a character driven exploration of individuals just trying to make it through their days. sydney khoo writes her protagonist with power and doubt and so what might otherwise fall into superhero fare becomes a journey of personal discovery.  Right now it's probably important to note everything I'm not saying about The Spider and Her Demons. This book is brand new so I'm not going to go about blabbing all the best bits for a bit of analysis. Suffice to say that Zhi's spider form is just the beginning of a vast world that is hurtling towards Zhi. In short measure getting a pass mark is a thing of the past and even survival looks like the wrong question as a whole world unfolds before us. I'm a big fan of genre and the fantastic and The Spider and Her Demons gives us these in spades. It also takes the outcast hero out of the comfortable worlds of Marvel and DC and shows us how this works at the intersection of multiple identities. I can't talk around the spoilers any longer so let me just recommend you go and check out sydney khoo's The Spider and Her Demons so we can all revel in it together. Bonus - There's a full conversation with sydney on the Final Draft podcast…

We're back and this time we brought both Justin & Laura Khoo of Cows in the Field on the pod to discuss the 2006 cult sports-comedy classic Nacho Libre. Little did we know that this movie holds a truly special place in the Khoo's hearts (you'll have to check out the episode to hear exactly why). In addition to anecdotal associations, we get down to the nitty-gritty on what makes this such an indelible movie. We chat about the artisanal needle drops, the meticulous costume design and visual craftsmanship, the unique tonal blend of childlike silliness (fart jokes) and hipster cleverness (including satirical jabs at Catholicism), the endlessly quotable one-liners, the hilariously off-putting accents, the comedic mastery of Jack Black's eyebrows and inflections, and the overall feel-good timelessness of this endearingly ridiculous tale about a monastic cook clandestinely pursuing a career as a Luchador to subsidize field trips for the orphans. So go snatch some eagle eggs, nurture your mystical powers, and get ready to enjoy our conversational smackdown on everything there is to know about Nacho Libre. And always remember: It is fun to wrestle. A nice pile-drive to the face; or a punch to the face; but you cannot do it because it is in the Bible not to wrestle your neighbor.

“Circles” is a music video of a song composed by Charlie Lim. He is visualized as a pixel art character journeying through a surrealistic pixel art landscape to find his love. Conversation with the amazingly talented Singapore filmmaker Guo Xiang Khoo on the making of the film. https://youtu.be/jaH7laaq808 Director Statement Circles was my first time directing a music video. The latest reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) do not mince words. They say that “climate change is causing dangerous and widespread disruption in nature and affecting the lives of billions of people.”  The quality of the public discourse on climate issues plays a role. A report released by the IPCC in February says that the “[r]hetoric and misinformation on climate change and the deliberate undermining of science have contributed to misperceptions of the scientific consensus, uncertainty, disregarded risk and urgency, and dissent.” An April installment describes how “opposition from status quo interests” and “the propagation of scientifically misleading information” are “barriers” to climate action and have “negative implications for climate policy.”  This week, a coalition of groups published a report titled https://www.isdglobal.org/isd-publications/deny-deceive-delay-documenting-and-responding-to-climate-disinformation-at-cop26-and-beyond/ (Deny, Deceive, Delay: Documenting and Responding to Climate Disinformation at COP26 & Beyond) that outlines prominent discourses that seek to pervert and prevent efforts to address climate change. The report makes recommendations for governments, social media platforms platforms and the media on what to do to address the the issue. Tech Policy Press spoke to two individuals involved in the effort to produce the report to learn more: Jennie King, the head of civic action and education at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) Michael Khoo, the Climate Change Coalition co-chair at Friends of the Earth
