This is the first in what we hope will be a recurring feature on Hound Opinions - Rescue Spotlight. It's always fun to shout out animal rescue organizations and the awesome work they do, and that's what Bill's doing this time. On the pod this week is Erin Thompson. She's the marketing manager for Tony La Russa's Animal Rescue Foundation - the rescue founded in 1991 by White Sox manager Tony La Russa and his wife, Elaine. Since 1991, the Foundation has found families for more than 46,500 dogs and cats, performed more than 52,000 spay and neuter surgeries to combat overpopulation and 48 of their rescue dogs have become service dogs for military veterans. On this episode of the podcast I had a chance to virtually meet with Ashley and Logan Ryan who are the founders of RARF - Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation. Many of you will know that Lets Chat About Cats Podcast and Sterling "Trapking" Davis have teamed together and dedicated the official 2023 calendar to RARF and they will be the beneficiary of the proceeds raised from sales of this one off fundraiser. The monies will assist RARF and their ongoing collaboration with Sterling. This includes funding for grants within the community assisting people with gaining non-profit status which in turn helps them continue important work in the community caring for animals as well as TNR.Ashley and Logan speak a little bit more about themselves in depth, sharing their background and the wonderful story of how they ended up creating their own non profit. It was not planned but was something they felt they could use as a wonderful tool to help so many after a chance photo almost broke the internet overnight.RARF does so much that it is almost hard to summarise but Ashley and Logan strongly emphasise that their organisation is always organic and is open to adaptation. They refuse to remain stagnant in a world that is ever changing with challenges and trials to overcome, especially within the rescue field. Having had to adapt how they did things during covid they know first hand that to continue to be successful means being open minded and learning from those who have something to share with you. Some of the work RARF do is helping communities and the people behind the animals as well as the animals. Providing financial aid to assist those who need it, educational programmes which enhance animals lives and behavioural training which supports the reduction in owner surrender and keeps pets out of shelters.Logan also is proud of his monthly campaign which takes long serving shelter residents who have been passed by time and time again and raises their profile with the hope of them being adopted finally into a loving home which they are craving and which they deserve.Ashley and Logan were introduced to the cat world through their daughter who adores kittens and is so involved with the fostering of the many kittens who come through their door. Avery is young but already understands the importance of litter tray maintenance and that its not just about cuddly and playful kittens. She does the hard work too.The Ryan's are a humble and kind family with animals at the forefront of their daily life and its kudos to them that they have taken Logan's profile as an NFL player and used it for something truly positive and really make a difference in the world. As Logan explains it is important to break down barriers and show that even in the most macho sport you can still love animals. Please enjoy this episode and if you haven't yet purchased your calendar to support RARF please consider doing so. It is a wonderful production with some of the most beautiful and special cats who had a sad or bad start in life and each represent a special rescue. As Sterling would say we are all #SAMETEAM in this together and after all sharing is caring!Shop | LetsChatAboutCats (letschataboutcatspodcast.com) Today please consider being #TEAMRARFRARF | Ryan Animal Rescue Foundation is dedicated to supporting the animal community with financial and educational resources. Thanks for listening!Fiona XSupport the show

Nancy and Harold discuss three animal rescue events that made last weekend great. And exhausting. But mostly great! On Friday, Nancy helped with a Wings of Rescue flight, the third one of 2017 Nancy worked on. She worked hard to coordinate the flight of sixteen dogs from Northern California to a variety of no-kill shelters in Spokane, Washington. Nancy shares some of her thoughts from that day. On Saturday, Nancy and Harold attended the Business of Saving Lives conference which brings together many animal rescue people from the San Francisco Bay Area. It was the thirteenth annual event at Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation. Some great speakers, including Dr. Regan McGowan; Erin Kerley and Audra Farrell; Renee Harris; and especially, Dr. Kate Hurley. On Sunday, it was St. Pitty’s Day at Contra Costa Animal Services, an event that attracts potential adopters to meet a wide variety of dogs from Contra Costa Animal Services and other rescue organizations. Nancy and Harold discuss the adoption of Sedona, a beautiful pitbull mix. Elena Bicker, Executive Director of Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, ARF, discusses twenty-five years of creating a world-class animal rescue facility and community. They have been rescuing thousands of cats and dogs for years, and along the way have developed a wide range of programs related to rescue, foster, advocacy, education, and community awareness. It all started on May 7, 1990 when a stray cat wandered onto the field during an Oakland A’s baseball game. Tony La Russa – a Hall of Fame player, manager, and baseball executive – was the manager for the A’s, and he and his wife Elaine were surprised to find that there weren’t any no-kill animal shelters in the neighboring areas. That initial event was the genesis for ARF. Elena Bicker joined staff in the late 90’s and made an immediate impact, raising over $1 million, and she never looked back. Elena’s been Executive Director for ten years, helping ARF achieve a 4-star rating as a charity from Charity Navigator, and truly creating a blueprint for other animal shelters to strive for. To loosely quote Elena Bicker from the interview, they set out to build a shelter, and ended up building a community. Have you ever wondered what it takes to place a stray animal in a permanent home? On Pawprint, you’ll meet the everyday heroes of animal rescue who use hard work, dedication, and out-of-the-box ideas to give homeless pets a second chance. thisispawprint.com What is a rescue organization? It can be one person with a passion for saving animals, or it can be a comprehensive organization with paid staff, a shelter, an animal hospital, and a network of volunteers. The mission is to save dogs, cats, and other animals from homelessness, and place them with a permanent, or “forever,” home. Rescue organizations also advocate for animals. For example, changes in laws to protect animals, reduce irresponsible breeding (like puppy mills), and spread the word on the importance of spaying and neutering animals. Two rescue organizations we mention in this episode: East Bay SPCA with locations in Oakland and Dublin, California. Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation, also known as ARF, in Walnut Creek, California. What is a foster? A person, a group, or family, who temporarily take in one or more animals in preparation of finding a permanent, or forever, home. The animals often need to get spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and treated for a wide range of health issues, and socialized to get along with people and other animals. Some animals only need fostering for a few days, while others may take months to find that special forever home. Nancy and Harold have fostered over 50 dogs, which is one of the reasons we started Pawprint, to get you inspired and moving! We share inspirational stories from leaders, volunteers, and experts in animal rescue, health, and behavior. If you want to learn more about us, here’s some random stuff about your adorable Pawprint co-hosts: Harold grew up in Buffalo, New York. He is a long-suffering Buffalo Bills football fan. Even though he lives in San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders country, he refuses to change his allegiance! Our son Dylan, by the way, is a 49ers fan. Nancy grew up in Seoul, South Korea, and speaks three languages – English, Korean, and Japanese. She grew up with dogs in Korea and while living in New York City had a cat named Smitty. Jenna Yarosh of Patton Avenue Pet Company and Sheryl Mann of Flying Dogs Photography have come together to create a new local nonprofit organization, the Asheville Animal Rescue Foundation. We sat down with both small business owners to talk about their individual businesses, and the formation of their new joint venture. Asheville Animal Rescue Foundation, or AARF, is a not for profit entity that aims to help underfunded or emergency based animal efforts. Yarosh and Mann aim to financially assist in trap-neuter-release (TNR) programs, spay and neuter programs, veterinary research, and emergency medical bills. AARF will be funded through the sale of merchandise. Flying Dog Photography is responsible for the first newly released product, 5 whimsical and funny holiday cards featuring both dogs and cats. Christmas cards and Hanukah cards are available for sale at both locations of Patton Avenue Pet, and the duo plans to have additional stores carrying the AARF merchandise soon. All proceeds from AARF related merchandise goes directly into the foundation, to be donated to various local animal efforts as deemed necessary by Yarosh and Mann.
