Kathryn interviews Author Shelly Vaziri Flais, MD.When author Shelly Vaziri Flais MD – a Persian American raised in a home where her father taught her she was equal to males – was pregnant with her twin sons (with a toddler boy already at home), the thought of raising three future men led her to wonder, “What steps can I take as a parent to defy prevalent generational and societal messages like male stereotypes and toxic masculinity? How can I help my sons not only become full humans in touch with their creative, nurturing sides, as much as their athletic, physical sides, but also become empathic, educated allies?” She now shares conversation-starting questions, age-based suggestions for books to read and movies to watch and discuss together and tips for addressing specific hurdles like division of physical labor and of emotional labor. Dr. Flais, a board-certified practicing pediatrician, is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.Kathryn also interviews Author Doug McIntyre.Newlywed Danny McKenna's honeymoon ends abruptly when he learns his father has died, uncannily, on the same day as his hero, Frank Sinatra. Returning home to his knotty Irish American family, Danny is confronted with a painful truth--while he knows everything about the famous singer, his own father is a mystery. Tasked with giving a eulogy for a man he hardly knows, Danny sets out to uncover his dad's past--an immigrant's tale of mid-twentieth-century America and the harsh realities of WWII lived in stark contrast to Frank Sinatra's famously extravagant life. Along the way, Danny's own demons nearly destroy him as he struggles to accept his father's deepest secret--a journey that takes him into the heart of darkness before he learns to live in the light. Doug McIntyre's novel is a poignant exploration of identity, family, and the ways in which the lives of celebrities intersect with our own. He's a long-time newspaper columnist, former radio host, and has written for all the major networks, including the hit series, Married… With Children, WKRP in Cincinnati, Full House and the award winning PBS series Liberty's Kids. Anthony McGill/Pacifica Quartet — American Stories (Cedille) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Pacifica Quartet with Anthony McGill by “I don't remember the first time I played or performed the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. There's something about the first journeys into works that are especially memorable for me,” said clarinetist Anthony McGill when talking about how he and the Pacifica Quartet formed powerful memories as they learned and grew into the music featured on their new release, American Stories.  Can you talk about what we hear in James Lee III's Quintet? “I've been thinking a lot about this because of my entire life as a Black musician. Lee's piece interests me, particularly with his discussion about his inspiration from pictures of Native Americans or indigenous peoples, but also a blending of Black Americans who can trace their roots to indigenous populations in America.” Can you talk about the story behind Richard Danielpour's Four Angels? “The thematic material is based on the Black American struggle and civil rights movement, which he has been a champion of through his musical voice for many years. This particular piece, which was dedicated to the four girls who were killed in the Birmingham bombing in 1963, is a dedication to the lives that have been lost for freedom in this country. “Recording it with the Pacifica Quartet worked perfectly. This concept of identity represents Danielpour. He always tells his story. We have individual stories of growing up. He grew up in Florida as a Persian American, but it always started in the civil rights movement. It's about how you can feel the plight of other people and be a part of a movement in that way and then use your voice as a composer or creator to share the voices and the stories of others.” How about Ben Shirley's High Sierra Sonata? Pacifica Quartet violist Mark Holloway: “It starts with this external sound, which is our breathing, waking up and starting the day. To start the recording, we had to breathe. McGill put some air through his instrument, and we were stretching to have a human side to the way the music opens peacefully and calmly. You can imagine the High Sierras. It's evocative music that marches to the beat of its own drum. He doesn't write music the way everyone else does, which is the mark of a very good composer.” McGill: “It's great to be on here with Halloway because we've never performed these pieces before, but we also haven't had long conversations. What Halloway says reminds me of my parents and family's visual art background. It reminds me of music that is similar to a collage. There are different pieces from different parts of one's artist's life within the work.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. As I mentioned previously, I am currently part of the Rogers Art Loft residency in Las Vegas and they have been putting me in touch with the local community and helping me meet people for the podcast. I have been speaking with quite a number of wonderful artists and cultural workers and these conversations will be released throughout the summer and upcoming fall season. For today, I am excited to share with you the first one of these talks as I speak with Shahab Zargari, an Iranian-American filmmaker, record label owner, and musician. Shahab takes me through his journey from working in advertising to making his own independent films and what drives him to tell the stories that he tells. We also talk about the pronunciation of names, Iranian films, Mad Men, and how he got a shoutout from Kevin Smith. Shahab also talks about his latest short film, Oh, the Guilt, which is a coming-of-age story set in the 1990s featuring a Persian-American as the main character. The plot tackles death, loss, and survivor's guilt, elements of the human condition that transcend age, race, and creed. Check it out if you have the chance. Negin Farad and I first became acquainted when she released her film 3rd Street Blackout (now available on Peacock). Since then, we have had a few interaction as she continued with her blossoming career in filmmaking and stand up comedy. Now Farad has continued her journey in life with marriage, motherhood, working in animation with the new Adult Swim series Birdgirl where she voices Meredith the Mind Taker and has worked with the likes of Neil deGrasse Tyson on StarTalk. Farad is the daughter of Persian immigrants, of which both our Iranian fathers (mine being an ethnic Assyrian) went into tradition, "respectable" careers. Her's a doctor, while mine an engineer. Fortunately for Farad, these days instead of questioning career choices, her parents can sit with pride and brag to their relatives people like Bill Nye the Science Guy and former medical doctor turned television personality, Bassem Youssef, who was referred to the "Egyptian Jon Stewart" before the Arab Spring. Farad's talents, humor and sensibilities are what keep her succeeding in the wacky world of the arts, but being able to wear multiple hats as stated above will ensure her longevity in this career. During this month of Ramad, we also talk about the significance that Islam, whether either practicing or viewing oneself as, "Culturally Muslim," has helped shape her worldview, giving a unique perspective in growing up in the United States. We also tried to figure out how Farad would react today, to her high school bully, and try to explain to our White friends that a 93% on an exam is what we lovingly refer to as an "Iranian F." Why you might ask? Because there was still seven percent we could have improved on. Welcome to the 8th episode of the Daria Hamrah Podcast! Today I had the rare opportunity to talk to one of my most inspiring guests that I am lucky to call a friend. What makes her so special is the very essence of what my podcast is about, success! Success, not measured by monetary value but rather than fulfillment and happiness. To me, the only true measure of success. People that follow their dreams and passion no matter what the odds are, people that believe in themselves and step out of their comfort zone in order to achieve their goals. My guest Rudi Bakhtiar is best known for anchoring CNN Headline News Tonight, a prime time national three-hour newscast in the US. Not only she was anchoring this Emmy nominated CNN Newsroom, but she also worked as a dedicated correspondent for Anderson Cooper 360 at that time only 8 years into her career with the network. All of this after starting off as an intern for CNN in Los Angeles only to become a line producer at the network in a very short period of time. In this very up-close and personal interview, Rudi, one of the biggest celebrities in the Persian-American community, walks us through her life, from being born in California to moving back to Iran until moving back to the US after the Iranian Revolution in 1979. Having had an inspiring father who was a Professor in Mathematics at the top Science and Tech university in Iran, as well as a  great uncle who was the Shah of Iran's last prime minister, she had two inspiring figures in her life who influenced her greatly in achieving her successful career. Most importantly giving her the confidence in believing in herself.Making her right career choice however came after reading a book about: “Finding Your Passion”. She walks us through her struggles and successes, from being destined to become a dentist and being accepted to NYU dental school, to studying architecture at the career discovery program at Harvard School of Design, to then making a complete 180 and going into journalism, only to become one of the youngest news anchors at then the biggest news agency in the world, CNN. Having all the stars lined up, her career took an unexpected turn when her father was diagnosed with cancer and she decided to leave her successful career in order to take care of her sick father knowing that she would not be able to return to her anchor job as threatened by her boss at CNN. Her love for her father and loyalty to her family was greater than her career which speaks words about who she is as a human being. As if life as the daughter of Iranian Immigrants in the US wasn't hard enough, she became a victim of a sexual harassment case while working for FOX news that was featured in a recent blockbuster movie “Bombshell” featuring Charlize Theron, that unveiled the story around the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Gretchen Carlson against longtime Fox News CEO Roger Ailes in July 2016.After her father's passing, she then became a humanitarian going to the war zones in Syria and Iraq to report as an independent contractor for Reuters about the crimes and human rights violations in those war zones. It is her experience during the time that led her to produce her upcoming documentary about Syria, ISIS, and the truth about the middle east conflict. I hope you will be as inspired as I was after listening to her story and

Tanin's work is based on the fundamentals of Quantum Physics, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Integrative Health, Energetics and Consciousness to support her clients in human optimization. She teaches breathwork, energetics, and meditation as powerful tools to shift negative energy into positive energy and to expand your consciousness to cultivate a sense of inner peace and joy in life. She focuses on shifting limiting beliefs and negative emotions into personal empowerment and magnetic vibrational attraction. She is a psychic channel for your Higher Self and Spirit.
