Episode #95 (#26) SUMMER BREAK Megan, Nadia, and Terri are taking a summer break during August but didn't want to leave you without something to listen to so they have chosen some great episodes to replay. In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions: 1. Does fasting for fat loss still require a caloric deficit? [01:08] 2. I've had success eating keto (traditional) with IF, and I've had success with a vegan diet (not keto) until I started relying too much on carbs like beans, rice, and potatoes. Do you think a vegan keto diet is a realistic way to eat while incorporating IF? [09:01] 3. I've heard a few acronyms that I don't recognize: PCOS, CGM and IBS (although IBS is more common and not specific to fasting). For those used to fasting and the TFM Community discussions, these are common terms. However, I believe that those not versed would be left wondering about them and possibly looking them up. I know I had to look up PCOS when I first heard it. [13:56] 4. I'm confused about which cooking oils are inflammatory and why. Can you please address this? Question: How do I fix low blood sugar on vegan keto? Short Answer: Consider how important it is for your ketones to be elevated. Most likely you need to eat more protein, which will lower your ketones. I would aim for a minimum of 0.8 grams per kilogram of ideal bodyweight and consider using 1.2 grams per kilogram of ideal bodyweight. If this does not work, consider all of the nutrients involved in energy metabolism — all of the B vitamins, iron, copper, sulfur, magnesium, potassium — but especially biotin and B6 for their disproportionate role in gluconeogenesis. If the protein you need to normalize your blood sugar does reduce your ketones to a level that are not giving you the benefits you are looking for, you could consider raising them with exogenous ketones. Vet. Haha. Meer hierover in het boek de Eiwitleugen. If you're not making continuous progress you won't get to your goals. You might start strong, but then end up throwing in the towel. You'll probably have a great week or MAYBE month, but will be back where you stared or WORSE six months from now. This is why the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen is so so powerful.Kaizen is all about small incremental progress that will ACTUALLY get you to your goal with time because you are always improving.Changing my mindset to base success on improvement not perfection is what has allowed me to lose 40 pounds and actually keep them off. This is truly life changing!Understanding a calorie deficit:https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/lean-with-plants/id1502040576?i=1000468508974

Despite what conventional medicine has told us, type 1 diabetes is not a sentence for a heavy reliance on insulin. For many people, a diet that carefully monitors carb intake can dramatically reduce blood sugar swings and reduce the amount of insulin needed. Keto (or the ketogenic diet) has gotten a lot of buzz lately, and this fat-heavy very low-carb approach to eating is showing some promise for diabetics and many other metabolic diseases as well. With that being said, there is no perfect diet for everyone, and each person needs to find what works best for them. One of my guests on this week’s Doctor’s Farmacy podcast, Dr. Carrie Diulus, has found vegan keto is the best approach for managing her type 1 diabetes and maintaining a healthy weight. We’re also joined by Dr. Ethan Weiss, who’s been steadily in ketosis for about 2 years using a plant-heavy, mostly pescatarian keto approach. This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market and SomniFix. Thrive Market has made it so easy for me to stay healthy, even with my intense travel schedule. Not only does Thrive offer 25 to 50% off all of my favorite brands, but they also give back. In this podcast, we're going to talk about the most important nutrient if you are a vegan trying to do the ketogenic diet plan. One of the challenges of a vegan keto diet is keeping carbs low, keeping protein high, and getting enough nutrients (b12, iron, vitamin A/D, trace minerals). The main nutrient that those on a vegan ketogenic diet always seem to be deficient in is essential fatty acids. There are actually two of these fatty acids: 1. Omega 6 Linoleic Acid (This one is pretty easy to get) 2. Omega 3-Alpha-Linoleic Acid (This is the one to be more concerned about) Omega 3-Alpha-Linoleic acid doesn't really do you much good unless it converts into healthy fats called EPA and DHA. These two facts are vitally important if you're a vegan. But, it's difficult to get this conversion—especially if you're a vegan. The ketogenic diet is gaining huge popularity in health and weight loss circles. Anna shares a deeper understanding of what the diet entails, who is it for, who is it not for and her personal experience implementing it - including “a day in the life” meal plan. Anna also explains that often those who look healthiest on paper can sometimes have smouldering symptoms under the surface which can be missed by conventional medicine. Tuning in to and getting curious about your own body and perhaps gathering your own data can empower you to take health into your own hands. If you just want to eat 1 or 2 meals a day, and you aren't as hungry, go with it. If at first, you need more snacks, that's okay too. If you aren't hungry you don't have to eat. Elaina talks about how when she started Vegan Keto she only ate 20 carbs a day and then needed to increase it to 30-50 net carbs a day so she could sleep better. Suggested App: The Cronometer- helps you track your supplements and macros so you can see what you are eating and what your macros are. Why fiber is essential in your diet. Why Fat is important to help with the sugar cravings. Should you drink with meals or avoid drinking with your food? When is it good to fast and when should you carb up (before or after fasting)? Should you worry about eating psyllium and it's cleansing effects? What does baking soda do? It helps alkalize the system (the kidneys) eliminates bloating and gas. ½ tsp with water on an empty stomach is a good way to do it. How to intermittent fast: Water vs. juice? How to drink a Celery lemonade Katelyn also talks about how the low carb keto lifestyle has helped her heal her from her autoimmune disease and has completely changed her life. This lifestyle is not only for menopausal women, but it's also for women in their 20s who are going through PMS, PCOS, infertility and more. What happens when you change your diet? Your palate may change! Once you start eating this way you will begin to love it even though you may not love the green juice or green smoothies at the beginning you will crave it by the end. We suggest using a bit of stevia to boost the sweetness if you aren't used to some of the flavors. We've discovered that many of our clients no longer want to eat sweet foods after they've have trained their palates to enjoy less sweet foods. Soon when they go to parties or eat something like a piece of cake, muffins, etc. they will seem way too sweet to them. We encourage a food journal and an emotional journal. Make an informed choice on how to lose weight, Vegan Keto or Paleo - there's so many to choose from.
With Veganism gaining popularity, it makes perfect sense that Vegan Keto would be the next big thing... and it is! We've found ourselves in an increasing number of conversations around high fat, ketogenic diets. We thought it was a good opportunity to s hare our thoughts on the matter from a rational and science based perspective. A ketogenic diet consists of an outrageous 70% of calories from fat. The other calories consist of 25% protein and a mere 5% carbohydrates. It is actually quite challenging to keep protein as low as 25% of calories, as fat and protein mostly come together in foods (from both plants and animals). Therefore, adding the processed fats (in the form of oils, butter, cream, etc) becomes necessary. In this episode we talk about some of the short term benefits and long term consequence of the ketogenic diet. To spoil the ending, we advise people to eat a whole food plant based diet that is naturally lower in fat and protein! Some highlights from the conversation... Foods to eat on a keto, and vegan keto, diet Short term effects (i.e. the “keto flu”) How and why people lose weight... for a while Potential consequences of prolonged high fat/low carb diet For a brief read, check out this blog post: https://www.alter.health/blog/bursting-the-fat-bubble Links to learn more - Show notes and resources: https://alter.health/episode73/ - Join the Alter Health Weekly Group Coaching: https://www.alter.health/weekly-group-coaching - Get a copy of Dr. Benjamin's book: https://amzn.to/2tmiOz3 - Apply to work with Dr. Benjamin: https://alter.health/membership - Connect on Facebook: https://fb.me/alterhealthinc - Follow Dr. Benjamin on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drbenjaminalter

Lisa Beats Your Meat - A vegan plant based health podcast for everyone
The best diets! Again. Every year U.S. News and World Report puts out the best diets of the year. In episode 60 we discuss the 41 best diets of 2018. Spoiler, the best diets are plant based.
This week, nutritionist, blogger, and author Liz MacDowell joins me via skype to chat about her approach to balanced eating on a low-carb, plant-based diet. We talk about some issues and misconceptions about both ketogenic and vegan diets, all the while chatting about where we find our balance in eating well.
The post 018: Liz MacDowell on How to Go Keto Without Meat appeared first on Keto Summit. Vegan/Keto - how does it work? Liz MacDowell shares her best tips on how you can get started on Keto, meat-free. The post 018: Liz MacDowell on How to Go Keto Without Meat appeared first on Keto Summit.
Today we catch up with Whitney and Ash again. Today we try recording in the car for better acoustics, but it was a bit of a wash. Regardless, we talk about what is going well and not so well for the ladies. The last half of the show we talk about type 2 diabetes and how diet can play a role in mitigating the symptoms, and in some cases even reverse it. When we catch up with Ash, she tells us about her birthday plans. She chose to go off plan and eat the foods she normally would. It did not seem to affect her too much. On the other hand, when we caught up with Whit, the previous she had chicken Flautas, and a soda. For her, the cheat not only made her stomach upset, she gained weight, and it also caused her to have a narcoleptic pull, so bad that she needed a nap before she was ready to record the podcast. Whit asked again about poop again. We discuss the possibility of these bathroom episodes may be caused by your gut flora being repopulated. When you change your diet, your gut flora changes with it. So, the idea is when you go from the SAD way of eating to a low-carb, paleo or keto style of eating your gut is throwing away the unneeded gut bugs to adapt with the new environment. The same goes when you go from a keto, heavy in plants and fiber to a carnivore keto approach. The gut bugs that were there to digest the fiber are no longer needed, nor are they being fed. So this die-off period can result in gastric distress, but once all the old gut bugs die off you should be right as rain. I also touch on how feeding different gut flora may help with ADHD, Autism and other neurological dysfunctions. The book Brain Maker by Dr. David Perlmutter goes a deep dive into the topic of gut flora and health. I mention that the book is Grain Brain, I misspoke, that is also a book by him, however, it is not the one I was referring to. After we move on from that topic, I give you the recipe for my high-fat cheesecake. It is super yummy. Here is a link to the recipe. The soda Whit mentioned is Bai, she enjoys it, and it keeps her soda cravings at bay. We also talk about fasting, if you ever choose to fast, make sure you are keeping hydrated and do not skip on the electrolytes! They are key. These are the electrolytes I use. If you do not have electrolytes, bone broth is also great to help you recoup electrolytes. Now we move on to type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes happens when we become resistant to insulin. The high insulin comes from an excess amount to glucose in the bloodstream. Because too much glucose can be toxic. The problem is that, much like with alcohol, or caffeine, we can build up a tolerance to insulin. This means that as we intake more carbs/sugar (glucose) than our muscles and blood cam use insulin needs to come in and usher it away. As time goes by more and more insulin is needed to usher away the same amount of glucose. Eventually, you become so resistant (tolerant) to the insulin that you cannot make what you need, this is where insulin injections come in. The sad irony is that you can fix this by cutting the carbs, and sugar. Eventually, you can heal your resistance. In some cases, not fully, but it can become manageable. There is hope. You can fix yourself. I also reference the Virta Health Studies, this is the link to the page where you can find the study I referenced, as well as all other the studies they have published, showing how effective well-formulated ketogenic diet can be. We also address a Vegan approach to a keto diet. If you choose to go, Vegan Keto, you will need to supplement with vitamin B12, and limit your carbs, while increasing things like avocados, coconut, macadami --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thrivingonfat/support

In this episode, I learn all about how to be a Vegan Keto-adapted athlete with Tay Sweat. Tay is the vegan trainer but he didn't start out like that. He was overweight and diagnosed with type two diabetes when he was only 15 years old. He decided to swap out the fast food for veggies and hasn't looked back since. We dove into the macro ratios he follows and what a typical day of eating looks like for Tay. We went down the rabbit hole of eating for ethics vs eating for performance. We discuss nutrition based off of ancestral history. We compare vegan and carnivore and we stress the point of doing what is right for you as an individual. I really really enjoyed this podcast and I learned a ton about the other side of the spectrum. Hope you enjoy the conversation as well!

Thanks to some excellent questions from our awesome listeners, I'm covering losing weight on a vegan diet, pre- and post-workout supplements, what I think about vegan keto (spoiler alert: it's bullshit), plant-based protein powder options, quirky habits I have (thanks to my friend Holly for submitting a question that gets me talking about my weirdness on the show...), creatine for non-lifters, plant-based diets and thyroid function, strength training rep ranges for weight loss, and much more.
How do you know which diet you should follow to get the best results? Are any of them actually good for you anyways? In this episode, we discuss the pro's and con's, what the research says, and what you should ultimately do.
This is a VERY loaded podcast in which we talk about combining minimally invasive surgical and medical care with nutrition to Carrie's journey with Type 1 Diabetes and her decision to pursue a plant-based ketogenic diet and then discuss the viability of plant based diets when it comes to achieving dietary and therapeutic goals. Bio: Dr. Carrie Diulus is one of just a handful of board certified female orthopedic spine surgeons in the United States. She practices “patient-centered” medicine rather than the traditional “disease-centered” model. She starts by identifying all of the factors that influence a patient’s health. This understanding is then combined with state-of-the-art minimally invasive surgical and medical care including complementary and nutritional approaches to develop an individualized program for each patient’s unique needs. How do you eat a vegan keto diet and will it prevent the top chronic diseases from happening? Hi Jimmy, Will and Carrie, Thank you for this special vegan keto episode. My husband and I have adopted a traditional ketogenic approach and have seen improvements in our body composition. I have noticed greatly improved energy, mental performance, and psychological health. In fact, last night I played two hours of volleyball and had more energy than the much younger fitness coach on my team! My mom is 67 years old, semi-retired, and is struggling with unplanned weight gain, muscle loss, low energy, a weak immune system, slow healing, brain fog, moodiness, and mental function issues that seem to be linked to elevated blood sugar levels. We've been talking about keto for about a year, but she is afraid to try it because she is a vegetarian (that includes no dairy except butter, but she will eat eggs). She thinks there won't be anything left for her to eat if she cuts carbs. She has been eating high-carb, low-fat, and low protein. To her, a can of black beans is enough protein for one day and a teaspoon or two butter is plenty of fat. She has been trying to get omega-3 fats from flaxseed and canola oil. She is excited about hearing what you have to share on this podcast and wants to know the answers to the following questions. - How do you prepare quick and easy vegan keto recipes? - How do you prevent hunger while eating vegan keto? - Where do you get your fat intake from on vegan keto? - What omega-3 sources of fat are there to consume? - How much protein is appropriate on a vegan keto diet and how do you get it? Tofu? - Will supplements be necessary to get all the vitamins in my vegan keto diet? - Dementia, heart disease, and cancer prevention are my goals with going vegan keto? Will this diet help me reach these goals? Thank you so much for your help answering these questions for my mom! Vanessa “In the next four or five years this is what everybody is going to be talking about. Educate yourself now so that you can make an informed decision about your health.” – Jimmy Moore 2. What are your thoughts on protein combining, getting complete proteins, and incorporating pea protein to get a better amino acid profile on a vegan keto approach? Hi guys, I’m a vegan keto dieter and would love to hear Dr. Carrie’s views on essential amino acids eating this way. Protein combining is a contentious issue in the vegan world and I’ve found through my own research tracking my macronutrients that vegan keto IS limited by lysine and to some extent methionine as we mostly cut out the legumes. I’d love to hear her views on the subject of protein combining, how to get complete proteins on a vegan keto diet, and incorporating things like pea protein to help achieve a full amino acid profile for people who can’t or don’t consume soy. Thanks! Renee Join The Keto Clarity Club For $1 Blood Ketone Test Strips! 3. What are you responses to these questions from a practicing physician? As a practicing physician, I’d love to have the answers to the following questions regarding a vegan keto nutritional approach: - What fats do you eat? - What carbs do you permit? - Are there any whole grains? - Any beans? - Any fasting involved? - Supplements you take? - Do you monitor ketosis? How? - What exercise do you recommend when doing vegan keto? - How many days a month do you recommend eating vegan keto? Or is it constant? - Do you ever go off vegan keto and return to a plant-based lower-fat diet to cycle out of ketosis? - Are there any concerns about osteoporosis from acidosis? How do you prevent nutrient deficiencies on a vegan keto diet? What impact would incorporating an occasional vegan keto day into my regular ketogenic diet? Hi Jimmy, Dr. Cole, and Dr. Diulus, How does someone eating a vegan keto diet get their Vitamin B12? I thought Vitamin B12 could only be found in animal-based foods. And what about other nutrients that only come from animals such as dietary cholesterol? If a vegan keto diet is a sustainable way of fueling the human body over the long-term, then does that mean you HAVE to take supplements in order to remain healthy? I’m sure your body can “get by” for a while, but at what cost later on...I’m very interested in what impact implementing vegan keto days into my regular ketogenic diet. Why do some people find it difficult to lose weight on a vegan keto diet as compared with a meat-based ketogenic nutrition plan? Hey guys, I'm on a vegan keto group on Facebook and I often read about people gaining weight instead of losing it while eating that way. Why does it seem more difficult for some people to lose weight while eating vegan keto than meat-eating keto dieters? Is there something in the animal-based foods that contributes to easier weight loss success that is lacking in a vegan keto diet? Thanks for helping me understand this better.
