GLORY & PROPAGANDA means war movies all month long and there isn't very many war flicks about the first gulf war. “Three Kings” is one you might think of immediately. On the other hand it's an interesting thing to capture the mundanity of a particular conflict and during that first gulf war in 1990, a lot of soldiers charged up without seeing quite as much action as they prepared for. I mean, shit got hot but folks were more like to be accidentally bombed by their own countrymen than getting it from an Iraqi in a hand-me-down Russian tank. Today we discuss the mundanity of militarism in this adaptation of Anthony Swofford's Marine memoirs, the 2005 film “JARHEAD” directed by Sam Mendes and Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard and Jamie Foxx. A unique war film that was released during the actions of a war that you could say was the sequel to the war presented here. A sequel that was considerably more destructive and withstanding. What's it like to get trained to be an elite killer and then get completely blue-balled out of killing? Makes you kinda feel like one of those trained killer whales at Sea World. I don't blame whales for attacking us. We've had it too good. Will these boys finally “get some” or will the only people “getting some” be their wives and girlfriends back home getting railed by some Jody college boys? When you gotta be with the boys you might as well be gay. Put that sentence in a recruitment commercial. Joy Reid leads this episode of The ReidOut with the ongoing efforts by Donald Trump's allies in Congress to apparently go to bat for the twice-impeached, twice-indicted former president. The recent appearance of Trump-appointed FBI Director Chris Wray before the Republican-controlled House Judiciary Commitee immediately went off the rails with an unhinged bombardment of all the old, right-wing conspiracy theories. Our experts bring their analysis. Also in this episode, we cover the aftermath now that Iowa Republicans have passed a draconian abortion ban that does not allow a clear-cut exemption for raped children. Plus, the U.S. military is the latest target of the right-wing culture wars, with Sen. Tuberville blocking military promotions. Meanwhile, a school district is banning the military memoir, "Jarhead." The author of this book, Anthony Swofford, joins Joy with his thoughts. All this and more in this edition of The ReidOut on MSNBC.

Claudia Cragg @claudiacragg speaks here with Christa Parravani about her harrowing account, , the story of one woman's reckoning with life, death and "choice". It is, she says, a memoir of 'Choice, Children and Womanhood.' In 2017 Christa Parravani had recently moved her family from California to West Virginia and was surviving on a teacher's salary and raising two young children with her husband, screenwriter Anthony Swofford. Another pregnancy, a year after giving birth to her second child, came as a shock. Christa had a history of ectopic pregnancies, and worried that she wouldn't be able to find adequate medical care. She immediately requested a termination, but her doctor refused to help. The only doctor who would perform an abortion made it clear that this would be illicit, not condoned by her colleagues or their community. Christa Parravani has crafted, through her own harrowing experiences with healthcare in contemporary America, a brilliant and moving exploration of the choices women have. Christa Parravani is the author of the Indie bestselling , which shares Parravani's journey through grief after the loss of her identical twin sister Cara. Her was named the Amazon Debut Spotlight Pick for March 2013, an Amazon best book of the month, and an NPR critics pick. Vanity Fair calls Her "astonishing." Her was an Indie Bound Next Pick, a 2013 Books for a Better Life nominee, and both an Oprah and People Magazine must-read memoir. In a starred review, Booklist calls Her "raw and unstoppable... a triumph of the human spirit." In Bookforum, Heidi Julavits says “Her invites obsessional reader behavior because Parravani has the ability to make life, even at its worst, feel magic-tinged and vital and lived all the way down to the bone.” Review - 'Haunting, wild, and quiet at once. A shimmering look at motherhood, in all gothic pain and glory. I could not stop reading' - Lisa Taddeo, bestselling author of Three Women
From 2012 - Anthony Swofford, author of the best-selling book "Jarhead," talks about a later book, "Hotels, Hospitals and Jails: A Memoir," which chronicles the often turbulent relationship he had with his father.
Today's episode we breakdown Jarhead, a 2005 movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal based on the memoir of the same name written by Anthony Swofford. This episode features power couple Brianne Davis and Mark Gantt. They are actors, writers, directors and producers. Together they run the film and television company "Give and Take Productions". Brianne Davis is one of the most electric talents to storm Hollywood by force. Brianne starred in one of the most highly anticipated new dramas with History Channel’s military series; “SIX,” is an ambitious drama that follows Navy SEAL Team Six. Brianne jumped off the screen as 'Lena,' a teacher and wife of lead SEAL Team Six commander 'Joe Graves'. Davis has also proved her talent as a big screen actress. Her first lead role came in 2005 with the blockbuster hit JARHEAD, a drama centered on the life of U.S. marine sniper Anthony Swofford, played by Jake Gyllenhaal. During the Gulf War, Swofford struggled to cope with being away from home and feared that his girlfriend, played by Brianne, was cheating on him while he was away. She also starred in horror film PROM NIGHT alongside Brittany Snow, Kellan Lutz and Idris Elba, as the flicks somewhat comedic relief. Not only is Brianne an actor, she is also an accomplished director and producer. Thriving behind the camera, as much as in front, she has produced five films with her production company Give & Take Productions, and has directed three features: The Night Visitor 2: Heather’s Story, Psychophonia and Transfer. She is currently pitching a TV series she created with Jana Kramer and Lakeshore Entertainment. When not in front of the camera, or in the director’s chair, Brianne’s undeniable passion is in supporting our troops. She can often be found traveling the world on various USO tours and has so far visited 15 bases. Mark Gantt has had a diverse, 20-year career in the industry, he has learned the business from the ground up, and had the good fortune of collaborating with top directors, including Steven Soderbergh, David O. Russell, Sam Raimi, and Robert Rodriguez. He is an actor, writer, director, producer and photographer. His feature directorial debut, Murder In Mexico, starring Colin Egglesfield, premiered on Lifetime and was well received by both critics and audiences. He also directed a dark action/drama pilot for Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s New Form Digital called Intricate Vengeance. As a writer and producer, Mark is best known for co-creating, producing and starring in the ground breaking, Streamy award-winning series, The Bannen Way for Crackle and Sony Pictures Television. Mark has created successful spots for ESPN and Nissan’s Heisman House campaign, along with popular and effective branded campaigns for GMC, AOL and Lifetime. In January of 2020, Mark released his second feature, indy thriller "Model Citizen" which was shot in New Mexico. He’s also hard at work on a number of TV and Feature properties in various stages of development.
Anthony Swofford joined the Marine Corps in 1988, setting in motion a series of events that would put him on the front lines of the liberation of Kuwait as part of Operation Desert Storm, and eventually help launch his career as a writer and producer. He’s probably best known for writing the book, “Jarhead” – a very honest memoir of a Marine’s life on and off the battlefield. The book would eventually be released as a major motion picture under the same name in 2005, with Swofford being played by Jake Gyllenhaal. Swofford takes us back to the uneasy days on the “berm” in the desert, and candidly recounts his time at boot camp and going through scout sniper training in the Marine Corps. It’s not often we get the chance to speak with veterans of Desert Storm, especially someone who has done so much with the experience. So sit back, and enjoy this latest episode of HAZARD GROUND, with writer, producer, Marine – Anthony Swofford. “Jarhead” We are very excited to announce our newest sponsor, Combat Flip Flops! Charlotte's next film this week is 2005 biography with Jake Gyllenhaal 'Jarhead'.Set in the late 1980s, Anthony Swofford enlists as a Marine, training in boot camp under a sadistic drill instructor. During this time Swofford undertakes a sniper course, shortly before the advent of the Gulf war. When the United States becomes involved, Swofford is shipped out, facing uncertainty each day -- about the war and home -- the soldier tries to maintain composure.
D. Foy is the guest. His debut novel, Made to Break, is now available from Two Dollar Radio. Anthony Swofford says "Reading D. Foy's prose is like watching Robert Stone and Wallace Stevens drag race across a frozen lake at midnight." And Matthew Specktor says “D. Foy’s writing is so rich, so saturated in both life and literature, that one is tempted to strain for comparison, to find whatever madcap equivalencies (“It’s X meets Y!”) might begin to describe it accurately. Yet its whorl and grain, the fantastical strangeness of Foy’s sentences and the astonishing accuracy of his perception, amounts to something I can only call new. Made To Break is that rare thing: a truly original, and ferociously necessary, book.” Monologue topics: news, new written content, upcoming event. Learn more about your ad choices. Hotels, Hospitals, and Jails is a multi-faceted memoir that reveals the downward spiral Anthony Swofford went through after the success of his first memoir, Jarhead, digging into his efforts to repair his relationship with his father -- and to say that process doesn't go smoothly would be a severe understatment.
