Send us a textKatie and Bridget get full rides to college for marching band as they re-watch the iconic movie: Drumline! Come along as we follow Devon, a kid who's "got hands" that ends up playing in the - you guessed it - DRUMLINE at Atlanta A&M. His sassy attitude quickly clashes with the child tech aka actually just a section leader Sean, who probably should have been flagged for a Title IX violation at this point! While the two argue and the rest of the drumline just focuses on drumming (seriously guys priorities!), it comes to light that Devon can't read music *gasp*. With more drumline dramaaaaaaa Devon is faced with a tough dilemma: does he take a class to learn how to read music or should he just quit altogether and lose his college scholarship? ... We're not sure how this became a question in the movie but it apparently did for some reason! You'd think that would be the only drumline drama but we've also got BET classics, Petey Pablo's, drumline battles, and absentee fathers (not Nick Cannon surprisingly) in this memorable movie that became a recurring Christmas gift theme for Katie while growing up! Released in 2002, it stars Nick Cannon, Zoe Saldana, Orlando Jones, and Leonard Roberts.

My guest today has done it all. He's gone from cinematography on small-budget indie films to $200 million-plus projects which is literally goals for many in this line of business. Director and cinematographer, Shane Hurlbut's thirty-plus experience and success as a storyteller is categorically innovative to the craft and inspiring for other filmmakers.Shane's latest film Love Hard is set for digital release via Netflix this November. This romantic comedy is about a young woman in Los Angeles who falls for a man on a dating app and travels to his East Coast hometown to surprise him for Christmas but discovers that she's been catfished. Her crush actually does live in the same town, and the guy who duped her offers to set them up if she pretends to be his girlfriend for the holidays. He's an esteemed member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the American Society of Cinematographers. The ASC recognized Shane's work very early on in his carrier from his film The Rat Pack and he was one of their youngest cinematographer nominees. Shane Co-founded the Hurlbut Academy alongside his wife and business partner, Lydia Hurlbut. Their platform offers professional online filmmaking education and mentoring materials, curated by other filmmakers. This interactive library has collaborated with filmmakers to develop about 50 Courses, 400+ Lessons, and 700+ hours of instruction videos. Some of the top projects he's worked on include Drumline, We Are Marshall, Terminator Salvation, Act Of Valor, and Game Of Thrones. The highly acclaimed HBO series, Game of Thrones was hailed for its spectacular cinematography. Outstanding, if you will. In 2012, Shane served as director of photography for their Game of Thrones: You Win or You Die - Inside the HBO Series that was an interview for major cast and crew members. Wherein, characters, families, kingdoms, and plots were explained with an in-depth look at season one. And what viewers could expect from season two. Some of Shane's work includes NetFlix's Rim of The World, Holidate, There Is No Place Like Home, Fathers, and Daughters, the pilot episode for SyFy's Resident Alien, and Disney+ original film Safety.Safety was inspired by the true story of Ray-Ray McElrathbey, the film follows a freshman football player for Clemson University who secretly raised his younger brother on campus after his home life became too unsteady. His passion for filmmaking goes back to his childhood. Like the cool kid he still is, Shane did morning announcements at our high school and DJ for a local radio station. As you can imagine, he started doing dances, proms, and homecoming across the local upstate New York area. He earned part of his education at a small community college where he fell in love with radio, TV production, and so forth. A scholarship to study film at Emerson College in Boston sealed the deal for Shane. In 2002, Shane's box office hit film, Drumline became a major splash. Nick Cannon stars as a young drummer who enters the fictional Atlanta A&T University and bumps heads with the leader of his new school's drum section. A fish-out-of-water comedy about a talented street drummer from Harlem who enrolls in a Southern university, expecting to lead its marching band's drumline to victory. He initially flounders in his new world, before realizing that it takes more than talent to reach the top. Lots of knowledge bombs from Shane in this conversation, You don't want to miss out. Enjoy my chat with Shane Hurlbut.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.
Zoe Saldaña joins the show to talk about her role in Jacques Audiard's new film, Emilia Pérez. Saldaña plays Rita – a Mexican lawyer who is offered an unusual job to help a notorious cartel boss retire and transition into living as a woman, fulfilling a life-long desire. Saldaña recalls being inspired by Audiard's work as a teenager, explains that playing Rita allowed her to combine her favorite artistic mediums and fully immerse herself within an acting experience, and reacts to the overwhelming public reception that the film has received so far. She also reflects on her childhood, describes how ballet provided her with a much-needed escape from every-day life, discusses how her early acting experiences in films like Center Stage, Crossroads, and Drumline shaped the kinds of roles she wanted to pursue, and speaks candidly about handling roadblocks throughout her career. Laci and Matt talk about the 2002 college band-centered classic Drumline, a highly entertaining journey into the world of HBCU marching bands. Nick Cannon is either “great” (Laci) or “perfectly fine” (Matt) as Devon, whose me-first attitude doesn't quite gel with his teammates on the campus of Atlanta A&T. He is especially at odds with the band director Dr. Lee (Orlando Jones) and drum major Sean (Leonard Roberts). Will they figure it all out in time for the big showdown against the villainous Morris Brown University, whose razzle-dazzle tactics Dr. Lee disapproves of? It's a fun and sweet movie and, obviously, we're shipping Devon and Sean. Get Laila (Zoe Saldaña) out of here! The Summer of Spielberg comes to a somber, respectful conclusion as we say goodbye to Mr. Spielberg by prying into his personal affairs and taking a look at his latest film, the autobiographical The Fablemans (2022). It's the story of young Sammy Fableman (but they're not hiding that the Fablemans are the Spielbergs) and his budding love of picturemaking. And we have the perfect guest to help us along the way, as we welcome in filmmaker and physical media enthusiast Paul of Twin Flicks (https://www.youtube.com/@TwinFlicks). Paul tells Laci and Matt about how Spielberg inspired his filmmaking journey, and then the three discuss the real lives of Steven Spielberg's parents and how Steven decided to finally stop making movies about other people's divorces and make one about his parents' divorce. And how about this? At 75 years old, Steven Spielberg made one of his best-ever movies. Watch this episode in full: https://youtu.be/ouKRlcanTyw Next week: We're taking a week off.
