In April Time magazine published a story entitled The Return of The Dire Wolf. Having roamed America's continent for thousands of years, the dire wolf had gone extinct around 10,000 years ago. Until, that is, a company called Colossal Biosciences claims that it has managed to bring the species back to life in the form of two wolf pups: Romulus and Remus. But despite the scientific wonders of gene editing, can we be sure that these pups are genetically identical to the dire wolfs of the past? Are genetics all that matters in the identity of a species? And even if it is practically possible to bring back to life species that have gone extinct - is it a good idea? Are we are morally obliged to bring lost species back to life if we can, especially if humans were responsible in their extinction? Or would such a practices risk "Jurasic Park"-like scenarios and our limited resources for environmental conservation are best channelled in preserving existing species?Jay Odenbaugh is the James F. Miller Professor of Humanities at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, USA. His research is in the philosophy of science, especially ecology and conservation biology, and environmental philosophy. He is the author of the book Ecological Models (Cambridge University Press) and has written about the ethics and aesthetics of species conservation and de-extinction. Scientists at a bio-technology firm made headlines when they announced the “de-extinction” of the dire wolf, a species of wolf that went extinct on Earth over 10,000 years ago. Colossal Biosciences examined DNA from ancient dire wolf fossils and used it to create wolf puppies with traits of the extinct species. The gene editing technology sparked curiosity around the world, and although the new wolves were not exact replicas of the originals they had similar traits. The development raises serious questions about what de-extinction really means.Mass extinctions have shaped the history of life on Earth, and nature has adapted across the millennia, but with almost half of all species already in decline, including some frogs, how seriously is de-extinction technology being taken? On his first day in office, President Trump placed a 90-day freeze on all U.S. foreign aid. He then put all employees of the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID, on leave last week. A federal judge has temporarily paused the mass layoffs, but the freeze on aid remains — meaning many programs providing food assistance, health care services have had to cease operations. Suparna Chaudhry is an assistant professor of international affairs at Lewis & Clark College. She joins us to talk about how these changes could impact humanitarian aid across the globe.

Despite being (mis)characterized by the IMF as a free-market "success story," South Korea's development model involved state planning and import controls for decades prior to the 1997 East Asia debt crisis. Economist Martin Hart-Landsberg, Professor Emeritus at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, explains how capitalist globalization materialized and morphed in East Asia, often to the detriment of its worker population. With Trump's inauguration nearing, Hart-Landsberg sheds light on why contemporary U.S.-China hawks view China as a threat rather than a technological competitor.

Her techniques offer practical steps for mindful listening and healing internal wounds. Listen to learn more.Childhood Experiences:Amber's passion for management started in childhood. She vividly recalls playing with paper in their chicken coop as if she were an administrator. As an adolescent, Amber took a moot court class because it aligned with her personality traits—public speaking, analyzing situations, constructing arguments, and posing solutions.Influential Groups:Amber is a Mexican-American who grew up in Arizona and was the first in her family to attend college and graduate school, despite having no educational role models. She attended Lewis & Clark College, though her GPA could have earned her admission to more prestigious schools. In college, Amber became passionate about civil rights and policy. She now sees her previously criticized traits as her best attributes.Cultural Epiphanies:In Amber's culture, during Christmas, her family makes tamales, menudo, and pozole. Amber is baffled that many Americans dislike pigs' feet or cow stomach, which are delicacies in some Asian cultures and among the best foods she's ever had. What Brings Out the Best in Amber?Amber enjoys working with organizations that are clear and authentic. This clarity makes it easier for her to help them achieve their goals.Soapbox Moment:Are you a CEO feeling unhappy and seeking tools to manage your emotions? It begins with Tessa sharing her childhood realization of the difference between those who have safety and those who are in danger due to war, poverty, and mental health issues. Her father, David Benedicktus, discusses his involvement in the civil rights movement and his work with marginalized communities, particularly the homeless. They discuss the importance of empathy and taking action to address social issues. The conversation also touches on the impact of poverty, and the role of neuroscience in understanding human behavior. Key Takeaways:1.The divide between the haves and the have-nots is a significant issue that affects society. Empathy and understanding are crucial in addressing social issues and helping marginalized communities.2. Poverty and homelessness are complex problems that require structural support and resources. Neuroscience can help us understand the factors that contribute to human behavior and the need for compassion. Cultivating compassion and empathy is essential for addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities.3. Trauma plays a significant role in shaping individuals and communities, and trauma-informed approaches are crucial for providing effective support. Providing resources such as mental health services and affordable housing can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. Last winter, federal officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced a program to save the perpetually threatened northern spotted owl. The problem? Invasive barred owls are crowding out our local forest -- they're bigger, and more aggressive. The solution? Culling half a million of those owls over the next 30 years. On its face, the issue seems pretty straightforward: barred owls are invasive, and because of them, Northern spotted owls are disappearing. But for Jay Odenbaugh, a philosopher and ethicist, the issue brings up a bigger question: how we as humans try to intervene in a problem we're also responsible for creating. KUOW's Diana Opong spoke with Odenbaugh about a recent op-ed he co-authored for the New York Times about how we can think more ethically about conservation. Guests: Jay Odenbaugh, professor of humanities at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has proposed killing hundreds of thousands of barred owls over the next 30 years in an effort to protect the endangered northern spotted owl, which competes with the barred owl for food, habitat and other resources. The agency published a final environmental impact statement last month, and a decision on whether to adopt the strategy could be imminent. A group of philosophers at Oregon universities recently took issue with the proposal. In a New York Times opinion piece, they described the strategy and the reasoning behind it as “dystopian” and “deeply problematic.” Jay Odenbaugh is the James F. Miller Professor of Humanities at Lewis & Clark College. He co-authored the article and joins us to talk about the ethical pitfalls of sacrificing one species for another.

Reiko Hillyer is associate professor of history at Lewis & Clark College, and she joins host Krys Boyd to discuss the history of prison furloughs in this nation – where life on the outside was a way of integrating inmates back into their communities – and how tough-on-crime laws of the 1980s and '90s changed the way we look at offenders today.
