What's That Noise? Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later May 30, 2021 44:09

This latest episode is a special one. Tommy has wanted to explore predictive policing for a while. He had the opportunity to do so as a sample case study for one of the classes he teaches at Queen's University: AI, Ethics & Society - a Masters of Engineering course where students use any media format they wish to explore the social and ethical implications of artificial intelligence systems.  And so, this episode is presented a bit differently than what you are used to - but it is still driven by matters of confusion, and certainly in the pursuit of clarity. Tommy raises some hard questions as he looks into the history of PredPol. As he outlines right off the top, PredPol is a relatively well known system by this point - as too are its social and ethical implications. But the matter of how the system came to be so problematic is an important one, too. As Tommy argues, the biases, assumptions, and limited intellectual scope of its designers implicated how the system was built, what kind of data it uses, and what kind of algorithm it used. This lattermost point is an intriguing one, precisely because the algorithm PredPol is built on has virtually nothing to do with social, cultural, or political life. Rather, it was designed to detect earthquakes... Special shout out to João Lobato, the brilliant mind behind LASERS, whose EP you hear on this track. You can hear his incredible work here. Training (37:33) As Tommy notes, there are three main focus points in training -- Operational, technical, and sales. Poor practices among competitors (41:55) Tommy shares some of the things he sees his competitors doing wrong and his philosophy on things like pay and tenure. Lead sources (46:55) Lead sources like Angie’s List and Thumbtack are a staple of the industry. Tommy explains how he handles those types of services but points to search engine optimization and Google ads as a far better value. Final bits of wisdom (50:50) Tommy shares a few bits of his insight. Links: Franchise Secrets - Website Franchise Secrets - Facebook group Mighty Dog Roofing franchising opportunities - Email

Co-hosts Jan Rutherford and Jim Vaselopulos interview Tommy Spaulding - the author of “Heart-Led Leader.” The conversation explores themes on being humble, authentic, and honorable vis-a-vis grit, edge, and tenacity. Tommy wrote about Return On Relationship (ROR), and says that with authentic relationships, you get lifelong customers. When you have a genuine interest in others, they will ask you, “What do you do? How can I help you?” Tommy believes the greatest leaders are the ones that connect the head to the heart. Listen in to learn more about leading with your head and heart..   Key Takeaways [1:59] Tommy’s career started at Up With People. In the course of that job he met Ken Blanchard, who changed his life. Tommy followed his footsteps to become a thought leader, speaker, and author. Tommy sees his success as being based on ‘heart.’ He categorizes thought leaders as either arrogant about success or humble about their path to learning. [4:39] Tommy says within minutes of entering an event he can tell if the CEO is respected and loved. You can choose to work every day on being humble, authentic, and honorable. It’s Not Just Who You Know is about ‘net giving,’ not networking. Net giving is where your heart should be when you meet people. Don’t sell yourself, but learn about others, and how you can serve them and give to them. [12:03] Leadership books must deliver bottom line results. Tommy wrote about Return On Relationship (ROR) to steer people toward relationship building. Authentic relationships become lifelong customers. Tommy reveals the ‘magical’ key to monetizing relationships. Without this key, the relationship will fail. When you have a genuine interest in others, they will ask you, “What do you do? How can I help you?” [18:16] As Tommy met leaders, he observed the ones that people particularly loved. He started taking notes, and listing leaders that he felt were servant leaders, and interviewed them. The greatest leaders are the ones that connect the head to the heart. People want to follow them. [20:31] Tommy defines a great leader as one people choose to follow, because they love and are loved. Tommy uses the example of Roger Eaton, the global President of KFC. He is not just respected, but is loved by his people. Tommy talks on love in the workplace. Millennials will not follow you, unless they know that you are creating a place of goodness. [27:38] Tommy wants a Maserati, but he won’t leave Lexus, because of service manager Kelly Kennedy. Kelly provides incredible customer service, and hugs Tommy every time he sees him. Any leader would want customers to feel about their staff the way Tommy considers Kelly. [36:54] In building authentic relationships with people, the goal is not get on their Christmas card list. The goal is to be invited to their Christmas (or Chanukah) dinner. Make a list of the top 20 important people in your life, and ask what kind of relationship you have. Ask, how would you love and serve them more? It can transform your life. It takes time. Tommy discusses authentic philanthropy.     Books Mentioned in This Episode The One Minute Manager, by Kenneth Blanchard Ph.D. and Spencer Johnson M.D. Leadership and the One Minute Manager: Increasing Effectiveness Through Situational Leadership, by Ken Blanchard, Patricia Zigarmi, and Drea Zigarmi The Heart-Led Leader: How Living and Leading From the Heart Will Change Your Organization and Your Life, by Tommy Spaulding It's Not Just Who You Know: Transform Your Life (and Your Organization) by Turning Colleagues and Contacts into Lasting, Genuine Relationships, by Tommy Spaulding, Foreword by Ken Blanchard   Bio Tommy Spaulding is the Founder & President of Spaulding Companies, a leadership development, speaking, training, and executive coaching firm based in Denver, Colorado. Resist Average Co-Hosting Today:Why wait? There is always going to be an excuse if you just don't start. First give yourself permission to start, then have a clear vision, add accountability and reflection to that and you you will move quickly along your journey to that vision. Today's Co-Host has applied this to his podcast and to his latest book which will be released late March'17. Tommy Baker of Academy.com (http://www.ResistAverageAcademy.com) is a fellow Thrive16' attendee and fitness buff. Using his platforms that he has built, he inspires and motivates people with fitness to act as catalyst for massive transformation in other areas of life. (http://resistaverageacademy.com) On This Episode You Will Hear:[spp-timestamp time="01:20"] Tommy's first true passion in life was fitness. It was his first foray into personal development. He wanted to use fitness as a tool to learn more about himself. As Tommy evolved his fitness brand and his two retail gyms, he started to broadcast the message, fitness was just the starting point and can be a catalyst for mass transformation in other areas of life. Half of his audience got the message the other half was just there for fitness, so now Tommy is separating the two apart and relaunching. [spp-timestamp time="04:40"] Tommy has a book coming out late March. [spp-timestamp time="05:49"] Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic Learning Styles (VAK). Tommy in 2015, had read through 55 books. Once he got to 35 books he was not effectively digesting and implementing what he had read. He was just in consumption mode. He has since shifted his focus to only reading 15 to 20 books a year, reading the physical book and listening to the audio book version. Tommy had chosen to not move on until he had implemented something from each book into his life or business. This is what Tommy calls 365 degree learning. Going deeper, instead of wider. [spp-timestamp time="10:21"] Document the moments that make you pause. [spp-timestamp time="14:08"] Using voice notes on Evernote as a journal. [spp-timestamp time="16:22"] The power of Accountability Partners. [spp-timestamp time="18:49"] Give yourself permission to say yes to yourself to make the commitment. Once you have done that, things just start happening and you will figure the rest of the stuff out along the way. The inspiration and the passion that you are looking for are always on the other side of action. [spp-timestamp time="21:20"] When Tommy started his Resist Average podcast, he went back and listened to the very first episodes of some of the current best podcasters. He came to the realization that they really were not that good. It immediately took the pressure off him, knowing where those top podcasters are now. He took a deep breath and said, "They started somewhere look at where they are now, I have just got to get started!" [spp-timestamp time="22:41"] We all start somewhere. The most important thing is taking action. [spp-timestamp time="23:34"] There are countless resources of accountability. A fan of Tommy's, unknowingly, kept him accountable throughout the writing of the book. [spp-timestamp time="25:37"] Using vision boards. Vision boards are environmental triggers. It's great to have big visions but you also have to keep in mind, what can you do today to take you a little closer to that goal. [spp-timestamp time="29:07"] Go to the places that you love and that inspire you. For Tommy it is being outside. The more you can sprinkle these into your week the more on fire you will feel. [spp-timestamp time="38:03"] Tommy got into CrossFit in 2007. It's all about trying new things and experiences. Scott in 2010 thanks to Wildland Firefighting. [spp-timestamp time="40:02"] Constantly variable. [spp-timestamp time="43:35"] You have to find out what works, pace it and don't be afraid to change it up. [spp-timestamp time="46:49"] Being objective with our goals. Having self...

Tommy Walker grew up in the north of England with stories of travel and adventure as a part of his life. With many relatives living overseas and an Uncle who had shared his stories of traveling in South East Asia Tommy had long held the goal of seeing more of the world for himself. Just over 3 years ago he headed off on an adventure to Thailand that was only supposed to be for 3 months. Hooked by the experience he explored much of Asia and Australia for a year and then spent 12 months traveling around South America including visiting Brazil during the World Cup. We caught up with him in his new short term home of Melbourne ahead of his 2016 adventures which will include Central America. We discuss the short term financial sacrifices a backpacker has to make, what it was like to mountain bike the world’s most dangerous road and how having too many expectations can be a downer for your overseas adventure. You can follow Tommy’s blog at www.thewanderingwalker.com   What I learned from talking to Tommy: Tommy’s trip to Paraguay showed him that listening to other travelers is not always the answer. He loves heading off the beaten track and can always find something worth seeing in every country he visits He is willing to work long hours when he needs to as he knows it provides him with much needed funds and a longer period of time on the road. Much like Tomislav Perko a little bit of time sacrificed to a job can provides months of travel experiences later. Being a backpacker works best if you’re a social creature who likes to talk to people but don’t worry if you aren’t; the process of travel helped bring Tommy out of his shell and it would be fair to say it may just do the same for you. As Tommy said travel finally allowed him to be himself and it may just be the same for you

Tommy Walker has written some of our favorite ecommerce content for some of our favorite sites over the past couple of years including ConversionXL and now Shopify Plus. He has a wealth of knowledge about content marketing and shares with us his best strategies for establishing a system to generate a large amount of quality, effective content for ecommerce companies. He shares all in today's episode, take a listen. Not every ecommerce company needs content marketing as a crucial part of their strategy. As Tommy puts it... I don't need an article about how to make my bed if I'm buying sheets online. However, if part of your mission is to build a lifestyle brand surrounding your product then content needs to be a big focus for you as it builds community, loyal customers, and drives a lot of traffic when done right. Tommy shares his personal 'code' (the one he's using for the Shopify blog he's now running) for successfully writing articles and hiring people able to create quality, effective content. The key is to clearly define the audience you are addressing and what your brand stands for. With this in hand, you can hire great talent and give them the information they need to be able to write the content you expect in order to reflect your vision. In this podcast we'll also cover an amazing workflow you can copy in order to manage content and writers just like Tommy does at Shopify. If you can run a system like this, you'll be able to consistently (and efficiently) knock out content that attracts great customers. Key Takeaways from the Show Why content marketing might not be right for your ecommerce company. How to hire writers for your content team. What you need to know about creating great content. Lifestyle brand vs Service oriented product. How to manage content production and independent writers. Today’s broadcast is part 2 in a 2 part series. Part 1 can be found by clicking here.  In part 1 (broadcast 9), Tommy and I talk about crowd funding.  What it is, how it works, and how to successfully create a crowd funding campaign for your product. Content Marketing 101  In today's broadcast, Tommy Walker explains everything there is to know about content marketing. What is content marketing? Simply put: it's content with a purpose (and that purpose is to elicit one of 4 responses - see below). As Tommy explains, every time you interact with a piece of content, it’s a transaction.  If you're reading this blog post right now, you're exchanging your time and attention for information from me.  All content works this way (from youtube to books to live music), but unless it has a purpose, it's not content marketing. The 4 types (and purposes) for content: Viral Content: To be shared Discussion Content: To be commented on / discussed Lead Content: To get a lead (filling out a form, email address, etc.) Sales Content: To close a sale (actually sell your product or service) Each of these types of content has a purpose - to get a reader to take action. If you're interested in finding out how to use each of these types of content, or why they work, listen to the podcast (it's definitely worth your time).
