This week's guest on The Unbeatable Mind is a true, living, breathing example of how success can only come through hard work. Coming from truly humble beginnings, Tommy Mello talks to Mark Divine this week about how he's turned the seemingly innocuous garage door industry into a powerhouse currently set to surpass $100 million EBIDTA. Tommy shares how he built and scaled his business from the ground up. From mowing lawns as a teenager in Michigan, to hiring top talent and building a world-class team, Tommy reveals the strategies that got him to the position he finds himself in today. He and Mark discuss leveraging equity incentive programs, fostering a culture in which staff can thrive, and Tommy's “build to sell” philosophy. They also get personal, discussing the ups and downs that come with rapid financial success, learning the art of delegation, and the toll of “the grind.” Tommy gives his candid take on money, legacy, and health routines, and dives into the future of blue-collar work in an AI driven world. All in all, Tommy's insights are valuable for leaders, business owners, or anyone with the drive to build something big. Key Takeaways: Building To Sell: Tommy shares his philosophy on structuring business to make them sellable and scalable. His approach to acquisitions, greenfields, and organic growth aim to maximise value for future exits. The Art of Recruiting: Discover how hiring is about far more than just what's on the resume. Tommy shares why he cares far more about passion and drive than technical skills, and how he can spot “unicorn” talent by paying attention to the little details. The Power of Delegation: Listen as Tommy dishes on his personal journey of learning to let go. Grinding one hundred percent of the time is unsustainable, so he's learned to build checklists, hire smarter people, and invest in his own growth through coaches and consultants. Marketing & Growth: Recognize how marketing for both customers and recruiting is the most valuable skill for company leadership. As an entrepreneur, Tommy Mello has navigated the trenches, initially donning multiple hats – from sales and marketing to accounting and recruitment. However, he realized that sustainable success doesn't demand sacrificing family and friendships with relentless 14-hour shifts; it requires strategic intelligence and building invaluable connections. So, he embarked on a journey of working smarter, not harder, focusing on cultivating the right networks. In a bid to pay it forward and support fellow home service industry entrepreneurs, he established a vibrant Facebook group. Here, he freely shares his insights and experiences while fostering a community where luminaries like Ken Goodrich, Joe Crisara, Al Levi, and other industry experts contribute their invaluable wisdom spanning branding, social media, and finance. Most home service businesses are losing money in the one place they least expect it—their call center. Brigham Dickinson reveals how industry leaders like Tommy Mello use proven CSR training strategies to hit 90%+ booking rates and generate millions without spending more on leads. Learn how to turn your CSR team into a leadership pipeline, create a culture that drives results, and transform your call center into the most profitable department in your business. Hosted by Chad Peterman on Can't Stop the Growth—a podcast built for leaders in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other home service industries who want to lead better, grow faster, and build lasting impact through people-first leadership and proven business strategies. When properly trained, CSRs can dramatically boost booking rates and drive top-line revenue. Hitting 90% booking rate on bookable calls should be the standard. Every percentage point below that is costing real dollars. Your CSR team can be a leadership pipeline. With the right culture and coaching, the call center becomes a place where future leaders emerge. Flat compensation beats percentage-based incentives. A clear, daily dollar amount per membership or upsell keeps CSRs motivated and focused. AI has value, but it can't replace human connection. Use it for support, but don't let it take over the customer experience unless you want to risk sameness.

Keeping your landscaping and service business on track can be challenging, but Keith has some great tips and stories today. In this $13,000 project, he and his crew dealt with everything from chopping down massive arborvitaes to detecting hidden PVC pipes. Keith explains the importance of saying "no" to things that aren't in your wheelhouse and why sometimes you need to learn the hard way. In addition, Keith shares some insights from other successful businesspeople who have discovered that streamlining your services can transform your business. It's a proven fact that focusing on your team's strengths will save time, reduce costly errors, and increase your bottom line. The key is letting go of the mental blocks and old stories that make you think you have to do everything when focusing on what you're good at is more efficient. We've covered you with real-life business stories full of practical advice to help you run your business more smoothly and efficiently. Check out these episode highlights: 00:00 Focus on big jobs; skip tricky extras. 06:05 Stick to core job duties and skip extra work. 07:14 Turning down a stressful job taught lessons. 12:36 Identify what you enjoy and focus on that. 16:30 Join for business advice and expert insights! 17:12 Want to chat? Hit me up at keithkelphus.com/call for some business advice! Key Takeaways: Discernment in Service Offerings: Knowing when to say 'no' to client requests outside your expertise is vital. This protects your business reputation and helps avoid unnecessary complications and delays. As tempting as it might be to take on every opportunity, focusing on what you excel at brings better results and client satisfaction. The Power of Specialization: Concentrate on a select few services your team performs exceptionally well. This approach not only streamlines operations but ensures consistent quality and efficiency, allowing you to train new employees and serve your clients with excellence quickly. Embrace and Overcome Mental Barriers: Understand that many perceived obstacles in managing a business, such as controlling quality and needing to be physically present, often exist in your head. Paul Giannamore is back in The Boardroom this week joining Patrick Baldwin to cover the surprisingly bustling pest control M&A market. You'd expect transactions to slow down due to summer vacations, but it's actually quite the opposite. Paul shared that Potomac has “closed more transactions than we have in a two-month period, except in Q4 of 2020." Private equity firms are at the forefront, driving many of the recent transactions. Unlike strategic buyers, these firms often operate under the radar, leading to many deals happening without public fanfare. With big names like Rentokil, Rollins, and Anticimex staying relatively quiet, is this the new norm for the pest control industry? Rentokil is undergoing notable transitions, with John Myers in the process of retiring and speculations of the company potentially going private. The massive Rentokil/Terminix deal was a significant milestone, but with pressure from institutional investors and the potential impact of the upcoming election on the market, the future of Rentokil is still undecided. The pest control industry is evolving, with a greater focus on service and customer experience over purely financial considerations. Across the service industry, popular software systems like ServiceTitan for HVAC services and ServiceTrade for fire and life safety services are becoming essential tools. How will these internal changes and technological advancements shape the future of the industry? Building relationships and leveraging industry expertise emerged as significant themes in this episode. Paul Giannamore emphasized the importance of networks like the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO), which provide invaluable insights and learning opportunities. Paul and Patrick highlight how industry leaders are increasingly turning to consulting and mentorship, with notable examples like Tommy Mello investing heavily in expert advice to drive business success. Will this trend toward greater reliance on external expertise and mentorship continue to shape the industry's future strategies and growth? Audio mixing and editing by www.verbell.ltd.
