Jim went to Kenya in 2018 which revealed his true calling. He went at the encouragement of a friend, and in a single moment, discovered a need that would pivot his life in ways he could not have imagined. While on safari, Jim visited a medical clinic for the Masai people, and learned that they didn't have access to critical dental care. Since his wife, Jody, is a dental hygienist, he knew instantly how to solve that problem. Ten months later, he had founded the Hardwick Foundation, and they led their first dental team to Kenya. In this inaugural trip, 191 people were treated and 258 procedures were performed in a tent, at no charge to the patients. The impact was instant and significant, and that's the moment he knew his mission was much larger than himself. Today, Jim helps servant leaders go beyond their borders through a program he created called Magnificent Significance. He serves small to midsize business owners who want to live intentional lives and achieve superabundance through service. His experience includes over 25 years in executive leadership, helping his clients generate profitable revenue while taking a deeper look into what really matters by igniting a business culture of engagement and collaboration. Jim has traveled to 42 countries and experienced many different cultures. He is also a keynote speaker who shares his unique servant leadership journey from sales to nonprofits to safaris. He and Jody are proud to be the 2022 recipients of the James E. MacLennan Everyday Hero award through Up With People. His core mission is to encourage his clients to embrace their servant's heart to elevate their business. In this episode of the Lessons in Leadership podcast, I had the privilege of sitting down with Jim Hardwick, a man whose journey from corporate America to servant leadership is nothing short of inspiring. Our conversation revolved around a simple yet profound idea—how serving others can elevate not just our businesses, but our lives as a whole. And at the heart of it all? A safari trip to Kenya that turned into a life-changing mission. If you like today's message, here are five ways I can help you grow faster… 1. Speak at your next event. 5. Conduct a mindset, sales, or leadership training workshop for your team. https://www.billstorm.com/ Jim Hardwick's life changed forever when he chose to go beyond his borders. Growing up in Speedway, Indiana, he had little chance to travel during his childhood. So, when the opportunity arose to join Up With People and spend time with 125 other kids from 25 different countries, he seized the chance to expand his horizons. That trip made such an impact on his life, and set the trajectory for success. What followed was 36 years in corporate America, helping sales teams and leaders generate consistent revenue. And while this has always been fulfilling, Jim knew there had to be more. That's when a fateful trip to Kenya revealed his true calling. He went at the encouragement of a friend, and in a single moment, discovered a need that would pivot his life in ways he could not have imagined. In this episode of The Nonprofit Exchange, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kat O'Sullivan, a passionate advocate for challenging limiting labels and empowering individuals to embrace their full potential. Kat shared her inspiring journey from the corporate world in human resources to the nonprofit sector, where she found her true calling in consulting and coaching. Kat's transformative experience began at the age of 14 when she participated in an Up With People performance, which ignited her passion for making a difference. She recounted a pivotal moment when, at just 16, she reached out to the legendary Bob Hope for sponsorship to join the program. This bold move not only changed her life but also led her to develop her "Hell Yes Strategy," which encourages individuals to shift their mindset to one of possibility and take courageous action. Throughout our conversation, Kat emphasized the importance of challenging stereotypes and biases, sharing a powerful story about her first host family experience that shattered her preconceived notions. We discussed the common scarcity mentality in the nonprofit sector and how it often prevents organizations from asking for the support they need. Kat highlighted that by embracing a mindset of abundance and possibility, nonprofits can create meaningful connections with potential supporters. Kat also introduced her book, "From Doubt to Do: Navigating Your Pathway to Possibility," which she wrote during the pandemic as a way to inspire others to reflect on their passions and pursue their dreams. She shared insights on how her coaching business helps individuals and organizations navigate significant transitions and make magic happen in their lives. As we wrapped up the episode, Kat left us with a powerful challenge: to reflect on what embracing our full potential means and to set daily intentions that align with our bold new labels. Her message is a reminder that we are all creating our legacy moment by moment, and it's never too late to make a change. Join us for this enlightening conversation that encourages you to rethink your possibilities and take action toward your dreams! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's nearly impossible to get through a day without having some form of interaction with another person. Whether it's at work, at school, driving, on the bus, shopping, on social media -- you just can't escape. Jeremy Bradley talks about how ridiculous-acting people make him want to hide out and never come in contact with anyone -- sometimes ever again! JB explains how customer service is maddening, how inconsiderate neighbors can make life hell and how (some) businesses ain't gonna take your crap. He shares examples of all of the above!

If you're a people-pleaser, you might sacrifice your own desires to make others happy or to reduce stress in a situation. In the online space, particularly for entrepreneurs, it's typical to act in a certain way to avoid "bothering" others or triggering them. However, it's important to understand that upsetting people as you become more visible and successful is an expected part of the process at any level of success. In this episode, Keri discusses the importance of embracing your true self and the challenges of people-pleasing, encouraging women to own their power and not be deterred by the fear of triggering others. Keri also shares personal experiences to illustrate this concept. For people-pleasers, it's instinctive to prioritize the wants and needs of others over our own. However, if you want to become a leader, it's so important to prioritize your own wants and needs. The expectations and emotions of others come after our own. Tune in to learn more! I dislike when someone intentionally or unintentionally puts up barriers in front of others which results in them being blocked from their success. We don't talk enough about people being the roadblock to success. This podcast dives into the types of road-blocking people and shares some ideas of how to kick those roadblocks out of the way.
“I just met the second coming of Michael Jackson,” says Frank Gatson, famed choreographer and Dance Dad to the stars, of meeting Beyonce for the first time in 1997 when she was just 15 years old. And Frank would know—his first major job was working with MJ on the 30-day shoot for Jackson's iconic “Smooth Criminal” video. Since then, he's worked with acts such as En Vogue, Usher, Toni Braxton, Brandy, Tyrese, Rihanna, not to mention a young John Corella. For his work, he remains the most nominated choreographer in the history of MTV. He began his career dancing in the long-running “Up With People” tour, staying with local families in each country in which they performed. Navigating language and cultural barriers helped him to hone his people skills as well as a keen intuition which has allowed him to share—and elevate—his artists' visions on an almost psychic level. With each performance, Frank insists, dancers are making history. After all, dancing and music can bring people together like nothing else. This requires that he be unabashedly honest with his artists, even when no one else will be. That honesty has gotten him in trouble, but superstars with the same drive and ambition know he just wants to get it right. And when it's right, he says, it's magical. With the same honesty, he critiques the current state of dance, what this generation is lacking and what needs to change. He reflects on his memories of a segregated American South, racism and homophobia in the dance industry. With a long and illustrious career, which shows no sign of slowing down any time soon, Frank's passion for and fascination with dance remains as fierce as ever. He has big plans—hear the musical he wants to resurrect, what American dancers can learn from K-Pop groups, and the five current pop stars he would like to form into a supergroup. When we share our light, he says, we sparkle brighter. Quotes “Some people might think my gift is to dance or to do what I've done all my life, but I think my gift is to see.” (5:52 | Frank Gatson) “I think musicians, dancers and singers can change the world. It's the one thing that all people love.” (10:10 | Frank Gatson) “You can feel racism, you can feel it when you walk into a room. Especially with my keen people skills. Sometimes, I'll go to a hotel and the elevator door will open. If I see a woman grab her purse, I don't get on the elevator. I don't want to give her that.” (22:20 | Frank Gatson) “It was like the little girl came out. Just imagine, I met Beyonce in ‘97. She was 15 years old, and when she shot up from the air in the Soldier's Field stadium, and said, ‘Is that Frank?!' I could immediately hear her like a little girl, and I looked up, and I started cheesing like a little clown. I was just so impressed that she saw me in the midst of all those people down there.” (26:21 | Frank Gatson) “Beyonce has told me, ‘Frank, your passion is going to get you in trouble.' And it does. A lot of people don't hire me because they think I'm trouble. I'm not trouble, I know I'm not trouble. I just want the greatest. I want history to be made. They just don't get me. Everybody who's worked with me gets me. If they've heard about me, they don't get me.” (27:26 | Frank Gatson) “I have a saying: ‘Share the light; sparkle brighter.” (41:55 | Frank Gatson) “Life is too special to let someone else predict what you need to say. You need to be gracious, you need to be nice, but be honest about this thing called ‘show business.' That's why there's so much mediocrity? What has blown your mind lately about show business? Think about it like that. It's because people are not really in it like they should be in it. They're sugar coating it.” (48:48 | Frank Gatson) “The reason that I was asked to work with Destiny's Child was because they saw my work with En Vogue. And Beyonce, I equipped her with all four En Vogue girls. The classiness of Terry Ellis, the pageantry of Cindy Herron, the soulfulness and spicy part of Dawn Robinson, the soulful, soulful, driven Maxine Jones. Beyonce's all four of those girls in one.” (52:35 | Frank Gatson) “I was in an agent's office and I saw Paula Abdul's number on the desk and I memorized it. I went home and called Paula and said, ‘I'm coming to your audition today, my name is Frank Gatson.' She was pretty mad, but she hired me.” (1:10:53 | Frank Gatson) Links Dance Dance Dad with John Corella on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dancedadwithjohncorella/ John on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/john_corella/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

In this episode, I talk with Kurt Wagner, founder and singer songwriter behind the band Lamchop, which make some of the most gorgeously orchestrated indie-pop you'll ever hear, wrapped around Kurt Wagner's complex and exquisite lyrics. Wagner lives in Nashville with his wife Mary Mancini, who ran Lucy's Records in nashville before becoming the chair of the Tennesse Democratic Party. We had a great conversation about avoiding the obvious in art and music, the trap of using politics as a promotional tool, and our mutual love of Vic Chesnutt. Wagner was a friend of Vic's, and Lambchop backed him for his 1998 album The Salesman and Bernadette. I had the good fortune of also perforning in Vic Chesnutt's band around that same time.Wagner has an amazing body of work with his band Lambchop, his solo electronica project Hecta and the excellent country album titled Invariable Heartache. Lamchop's newest album, released in September, is called the Bible. https://www.lambchop.nethttps://www.lucysrecordshop.comPlaylist available on Spotify:Theme song; Marchandise by Pierre de Gaillande, from the album franglais. (originally Merchandise by Fugazi.) Man Who Loved Beer, Up With People, I've Been Lonely for So Long, Relatives #2, Give Me Your Love, JFK, Grumpus, and Whatever, Mortal by Lambchop. Change is In our Pocket by HecTA. Wild Mountain Berries by Kort. Scratch Scratch Scratch and Supernatural by Vic Chesnutt.

In this episode we finally confront Chapter 7 of Descent of Man, entitled On the Races of Man. In this chapter Darwin discusses the races of humans and outlines the scientific arguments of the time that questioned if humans are more than one species. These arguments, of course, were based upon racist European views of the people from the lands their countries had colonized. Race is a social construct, not a biological identity, and we discussed why that is the case in this episode. https://angelicadass.com/photography/humanae/James Wagner's daughter participated in this awesome art project and she is included in the images above. At one point we noted that Darwin reintroduced the idea of a range of varieties of organisms that can interbreed along a geographical range, but the ends of the ranges were reproductively isolated. We introduced that idea, often called a ring species, in Season 1 Episode 3, which can be found here. Sarah loves her ectoparasites and their evolution and discussed Darwin's 30 year obsession with that issue. Here is a link to a wonderful series of articles about Descent of Man and that obsession. The opening theme to Discovering Darwin is "May" by Jared C. Balogh. http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Balogh/Revitalized_Eyes/MAY Interlude music is We are Many, We are One a song from Up With People, a group of musicians who "stage song and dance performances promoting themes such as religion, racial equality, and positive thinking." Our own Mark Jackson played trumpet with Up With People before pursuing his career in psychology.
