I think we need to stretch our sense of time, and within that stretch our sense of empathy. The philosopher Roman Krznaric talks about that in his book The Good Ancestor, that we need a more elastic sense of empathy that can encompass not just those close to us or living alongside us, but those who have yet to be born will have to inherit the world that we passed down to them. But I think in stretching that sense of empathy and stretching that sense of the times that we touch, if you like, because all of us are engaged in activities that will lead long legacies, long tails, in terms of the fossil fuels we're consuming. I think recognizing that is vital, really. We've created a human planet, a planet that is increasingly organized to serve one particular species. And the rest of life has to work around that, but I feel that there are lessons to be learned in observing how the rest of life is doing that kind of work of adapting and learning to live on a human planet. "I think a poem is a wonderful device for challenging our sense of the world around us and how things are connected in particular. Whether it's through the patterning of sounds or the arrangement of line breaks, poems are always suggesting to us new and perhaps unconsidered ways in which seemingly unlike things can be drawn into a relationship with one another, perhaps have always been in a relationship that we haven't understood. In Anthropocene Poetics, I talk about the thick time of lyric poetry, how a poem can bring many different times and time scales together. A poem can help us to think about the planetary time alongside the time of a passing moment or time on a human scale, as if these things are totally at home together - which of course they are."David Farrier's books include Footprints: In Search of Future Fossils (2020) and Anthropocene Poetics (2019). "I think the most important thing is to try to stay open to be influenced by my students. For me, teaching is not a one way street. It's not simply a case of me saying and them learning, but it's a case of kind of all of us together working things out and building an understanding together. What we get from the course is something that we all put in. It's a collaboration. And I certainly feel that I learn a great deal from my students. I hope they learn as much from me as I learn from them. And I think that, if I have anything that I would hope is that young people, that students would take away, is that learning is a collaboration. That we make knowledge together. That's true in every sense. That's true in a classroom. That's true in general life, and I think it's true for all species. I think animals learn about their world through their interaction with co-species as well. No animal lives in isolation, really. They make their worlds together, and I think we need to adopt that attitude as well, to recognize that we make our world together."David Farrier's books include Footprints: In Search of Future Fossils (2020) and Anthropocene Poetics (2019). Co-host Beth Lyons welcomes PDSB Teacher-Librarian Jonelle St. Aubyn to the podcast. The two talk about their connection as TLs within a family of schools and the joy and support that comes from meeting together as a teacher-librarian collective. Beth and Jonelle talk about the opportunity they had to present at the superintendent meeting for their family of schools about their journeys within the LLC and how a library learning commons can support the school community. The library and the work done within the library can act as a driving force within a school to help improve pedagogical practices in relation to inclusion, equity and culturally relevant and responsive teaching. Both teacher-librarians discuss the intentional and goal-driven journey that has guided the transition of their LLC space and the co-planning and co-teaching with their fellow educators that has evolved due to the ongoing pandemic and drive to serve the community and its needs. As Jonelle and Beth looked back at their journey within the LLC and worked to create their presentation for the superintendent meeting, they both highlighted four guiding principles they felt spoke to the vision of their space. While the four guiding principles chosen for each LLC may be different, the two discuss their interwoven nature and ongoing learning as they continue to curate a space that evolves with the needs of the school community.Guest- Jonelle St AubynRole - Teacher librarian at Louise Arbour Secondary School in the Peel District School Board. 7 years as a teacher librarian and 21 years as an educator in Peel.Twitter - @Ms_St_AubynTexts Mentioned in This Episode:Cultivating Genius by Gholdy MuhammadDiversity Audit of a Middle School Library by Toni Duvalhttps://journal.canadianschoollibraries.ca/diversity-audit-of-a-middle-school-library/Tom Schimmer Podcast- Passions or Strengths | Chey Cheney | Concise Answershttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-inYGg5C7Y

We hope Nick Rheinwald-Jones won't hold it against us that we invited him back to discuss Patrick Melrose, the Cinnamon Toastencrunch vanity proje-- er, "Benedict Cumberbatch-starring miniseries based on the St. Aubyn novel series." Because y'all, we haaaaated it, and we've got the extended remix of fart noises to prove it. It won't take a Sherlock to deduce that we moved smartly along to our Around The Dial section, with stops at the newest Little Women adaptation, Claws, and some Netflix comedy specials of note before Nick tried to prank the Canon with a third-season Happy Endings episode. Adopted series won, former headliners lost, and we made crossover events out of actors in a character-conflating Game Time. No need to go through Extra Hot Great withdrawal: an all-new episode is right here. GUESTS

St. Aubyn's novel parodies the upsurge of interest in literary prizes: what do these prizes have to do with literature, and are the books that win ones we should read?
