Do you love High performance then check out our 3 day summit in October this year, only 30 places: https://events.highperformanceleadershipsummit.com.au/october-summit-2024For many of us reading and writing seems pretty common place. So much so that we might not even consider what it must be like to navigate our modern world without an ability to read and write.Graham Neville dropped out of school in year 10 and ever since, he navigated he world with a very minimal ability to read and write up until his 50's. For his entire life he hid this from the world, sharing his secret with only a select few.But with covid lockdowns and the world increasingly moving online he realised he had to make a change, but even he couldn't have predicted the massive effect this move would have on his life.He was asked to appear on the SBS program Lost For words, has been a guest speaker on numerous occasions and his personal life has also benefitted from the boom in self confidence he has experienced as well.In this episode Grahame shares:- His early career life after he dropped out of school- His early struggles with reading and writing- What his life was like without reading and writing- How he hid is inability to write and read- Why the fear of getting found out was so serious for him- How he finally took the step to change things- how doing the course got him on tv- The scary experience of being in Sydney with no support for weeks- The surprising support he received- The avenues and opportunities he has gotten since- The huge change in his self confidenceKey Quotes “The fear was overwhelming.” “When it came to reading and writing I just delegated.” “The first book I read was cat in the hat, and now I'm reading the barefoot investor.”More about GrahameYou can watch Lost For Words season 2 here: https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/tv-series/lost-for-words/season-2You can get involved with the podcast online On facebook in our community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/challengesthatchangeusOr on Instagram: @challengesthatchangeusIf you want to contact the podcast, email us here: support@challengesthatchangeus.comOr check out our website: www.Challengesthatchangeus.comIf you want to find out more about what Ali does, check out her business via the website: http://www.trialtitudeperformance.com.auFor her other business you can find it through the websites: www.altitudefitnessarmidale.com.au Hosted on Acast. In 1994, your hosts found themselves finishing their junior year of college when it was announced that Pink Floyd were coming back with a new album, The Division Bell, and a huge tour to promote it. After watching the concert film Delicate Sound of Thunder from the previous tour, The Wolf made it his mission to see them live. And of course, our hosts picked up the album as soon as it came out. But at the time, they found the album disappointing and didn't stand up to it's predecessor, A Momentary Lapse of Reason. However, as the album turns 30, we can look back at it with a better understanding of how this record stands up in the Pink Floyd catalog. We can appreciate that it was the first time in 20 years that David Gilmour and Rick Wright wrote songs together. We can enjoy David's extraordinary guitar work - how he can pull so much emotion out of each note still floors us to this day. And we can hear the heartbreak and new love found (Coming Back To Life), the hope for a better future (A Great Day For Freedom, Keep Talking) and the bitterness that lingers from their feud with Roger Waters (Poles Apart, Lost For Words). While some might dismiss this as latter day, Roger-less, not-as-classic Pink Floyd, we found that the tunes were better than we remembered and they conjured memories from a simpler and more wondrous time in our lives. And the memories from the lone time The Wolf ever saw Pink Floyd live help us warm to this record as a gem, albeit a dark horse, in the Pink Floyd catalog. Having risen to the status of international newspaper sensation, The Dalby Spook, or Gef the talking mongoose to those that knew him, was now poised to meet some of the world's most infamous psychical researchers. Unfortunately, Gef was as shy amongst company as he was talkative to the Irvings. Yet still the story of Gef persisted until eventually, his name ended up associated with a debate that took place in the highest office of the land. SOURCES Josiffe, Christopher (2017) Gef! Fluent Fiction - Hungarian: Lost for Words: An Encounter of Unspoken Connections Find the full episode transcript, vocabulary words, and more:fluentfiction.org/lost-for-words-an-encounter-of-unspoken-connections Story Transcript:Hu: Gábor, egy átlagos budapesti fiatalember, vidáman sétált a nyüzsgő Andrásyn. Rajongott a város vibráló pulzusáért, és a levendula színű égbolt előtti, gondosan megőrzött, szecessziós épületekért.En: Gábor, an average young man from Budapest, happily strolled down the bustling Andrásy Boulevard. He adored the vibrant pulse of the city and the meticulously preserved Art Nouveau buildings against the lavender-colored sky.Hu: Azon a délutánon az örökké foglalkoztatott otthoni számítógépét hagyta maga mögött. Megúnva a virtuális létezést, levegőért és kapcsolatokért kiáltott a lélek. Nagy levegőt vett, és érezte, ahogy a város szaga betölti a tüdejét.En: On that afternoon, he left behind his constantly occupied home computer. Tired of virtual existence, he longed for fresh air and human connections. He took a deep breath and felt the city's scent fill his lungs. Gábort elvarázsolta a látvány.En: Suddenly, an angelically beautiful stranger emerged from a café onto the promenade. The lady was an enchanting creature, with velvety, long dark hair and mysterious green eyes that resembled the fresh growth of spring. Gábor was spellbound by her sight.Hu: Hozzálépett. "Hallom," köszönt neki meggyőződéssel. A nő összerezzent, meglepetten nézett rá. A kiigazítatlan GOOGLE fordítás hibásan "hallom" helyett "hello"-t használt. Zavarban volt, de Gábor nem vesztette el a humorérzékét.En: He approached her and confidently greeted, "I can hear you." The woman startled, looking surprised. The faulty, unadjusted GOOGLE translation inaccurately used "hear" instead of "hello". She was taken aback, but Gábor didn't lose his sense of humor.Hu: "Máris megbántam, próbálkozom újra: Szép napot kívánok, kedves hölgyem!" szólt, azon gondolkodva, hogy ezt a helyzetet hogyan lehetne tisztázni. A nő elmosolyodott és végül nevetett a helyzeten. Gábor is nevetett, oldottá vált a szituáció.En: "I regret it already, let me try again: Good day, dear lady!" he said, pondering how to clarify the situation. The woman smiled and eventually laughed at the situation. Gábor laughed too, and the atmosphere became more relaxed.Hu: Befejezve sétáját, egy kis háznál találta magát. Az udvaron egy kecske leste a teret, lehajolva falatozott a frissen nyírott gyepen. Gábor beleszeretett ebbe a házikecskébe. Megcirógatta puha bundáját, és a következőket mondta: "Micsoda gyönyörű kecske vagytok! Soha nem láttam hozzád hasonlót."En: Finishing his walk, he found himself near a small house. In the yard, a goat lay, grazing on the freshly cut grass. Gábor fell in love with this little house goat. He gently stroked its soft fur and said, "You are such a beautiful goat! I have never seen anything like you before."Hu: A babonás emberek szerint, aki rossz szót használ a köszönéshez, az szerencsétlenséget hoz. En: According to superstitious people, uttering the wrong word during a greeting brings bad luck. Gábor learned on that day that sometimes the most extraordinary encounters happen when we are "lost for words", and it only triggered another chain of unexpected but beautiful events. He allowed life's stage to shift roles, eventually praising both people and goats. CrowdScience listener Nyankami, from Kenya, has a friend with dementia. Despite memory loss and no longer knowing his way around, his friend has no problem communicating. So what's the connection between memory and language? Caroline Steel discovers how dementia affects our speech. In most cases the illness does have an impact on our ability to speak but it can depend on many factors, including the type of dementia and even how many languages we speak. She meets George Rook, diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's, who's a passionate campaigner for people with dementia and talks to dementia nurse Helen Green, who explains how the illness can affect our behaviour. She discovers that speaking more than one language can actually protect our brains from decline and finds out about cutting edge research that is helping people with dementia to improve their memory and capacity to speak. Steph speaks with Illiyin Morrison and Sophie McCartney (AKA Tired and Tested) about those early days and months of motherhood, as part of the Lost For Words series. Rather than gloss over it, Sophie and Illy both have careers that centre on being reassuringly honest about motherhood, and in turn offering support to women who may be finding it tougher than expected. Illy trained as a midwife and now helps women debrief after birth, and Sophie is a comedian and bestselling author with a huge Instagram account sharing the trials (and hilarity) of motherhood. Illy and Sophie talk about the early days, their feelings of failure and guilt about not doing it ‘right', whether that's the birth, breastfeeding, or just being a mum. They talk about obsessing about sleep and feeding, sweaty weigh ins, baby groups and having babies at the same time as Kate Middleton. They also discuss comparison and expectation, and the impact babies can have on a relationship. This conversation will make new mums feel better, or if someone further down the line thinks they did a terrible job, it will let them know that none of us knew what we were doing. Continuing the Lost For Words series, Steph speaks with Leanne Pero and Emma Campbell about Cancer. Both women have been diagnosed with breast cancer – Leanne is in remission and Emma continues with regular treatment after her third diagnosis in 2019. Both women are incredibly honest about their experience, struggles and the mental health impact. Sometimes the voices of cancer are either gloomy or exceptionally brave, but it is clear from this conversation that it is so much more nuanced. Leanne and Emma explain the imprint of fear that a cancer diagnosis leaves and the impact that will forever have on their lives but they also talk about hope and gratitude. The discussion includes social media, where there is an incredible cancer community that can be a huge support but how it can sometimes be a trigger that keeps someone in the ‘cancer world', so they talk about boundaries. They also share their thoughts on how someone going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment can start to get their head around it, and the different things that might help them. Leanne talks about the stigma around cancer in the black community, that lead her to found Black Women Rising. For the second episode of this Lost For Words series, Steph spoke with podcast hosts The Other Mothers AKA Caro Tasker, Elle Wright and Jen Reid, three women on a mission to talk about Baby Loss, pushing through the discomfort people feel, to better support those going through it. Through their tragic experiences of baby loss, which include stillbirth, neonatal death and SIDS (formerly known as cot death), Caro, Elle and Jen explain to Steph how those early weeks felt. The ladies talk honestly about the impact on their identity, friendships and their relationship, and feelings of guilt. They also provide some really helpful advice on how to help someone going through baby loss and what to say, as well as what not to say or do. All three women are involved in charity work, to do what they can to stop others having to go through the pain they have felt. Jen set up charity Teddy's Wish with her husband Chris to fund potentially life-saving research into SIDS (formerly known as cot death), Neonatal death and Stillbirth and to provide bereavement support for grieving families. Teddy's Wish and Don't Buy Her Flowers created two Baby Loss Care Packages together. Rhapsody Deep Dive: Lost For Words by Pink Floyd Today's episode is a “Deep Dive” on the song Lost For Words by Pink Floyd. Lost For Words was released in 1994 as a part of the Division Bell album. It was written by Pink Floyd's singer and guitarist David Gilmour. This is one of my favorite songs of all time, and we're going to really break it down. We're going to be looking specifically at the lyrics, form, and instrumentation of the song. Segment 1: Lyrics Add details on segment 1. What did you talk about? Summarize the main points here. The whole gist of the lyrics is an awakening of sorts - coming out of a time of darkness into a renewed sense of love and making amends The song strives to communicate that getting caught in grudges only hurts yourself, and it's time to forgive those who hurt you Segment 2: FormAdd details on segment 1. What did you talk about? Summarize the main points here. Lost For Words follows a clear structure which contributes to the message The build-up, climax, and full-circle ending make for a satisfying result Segment 3: InstrumentationAdd details on segment 1. What did you talk about? Summarize the main points here. The instruments used in Lost For Words contribute to the mood and theme of the song The drums and acoustic instruments give the song a spiritual/religious undertone Credits:https://open.spotify.com/track/4Ev1LZ4uzjnSvDHpgdyBZK (Pink Floyd, Lost For Words) Visit our Website https://hvspn.com/podcast/rhapsody/ (www.hvspn.com)Subscribe to our Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rhapsody/id1557279744 (Apple Podcasts ) https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5jYXB0aXZhdGUuZm0vcmhhcHNvZHk?sa=X&ved=0CAMQ4aUDahcKEwjwta_Sj_HvAhUAAAAAHQAAAAAQAw&hl=en (Google Podcasts) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC07e_nBHLyc_nyvjF6z-DVg (YouTube) Connect with us on Social Media Twitter https://twitter.com/thehvspn (@thehvspn) Twitter https://twitter.com/HVRhapsody (@HVRhapsody) Instagram https://www.instagram.com/hvrhapsody/ (@HVRhapsody)
In episode 171 UNP founder and curator Grant Scott is in his shed reflecting on mentorship, teaching and the passing on of information. He also provides his final found rules for life. Plus this week photographer Peter Fraser on the challenge of supplying Grant with an audio file no longer than 5 minutes in length in which he answer's the question ‘What Does Photography Mean to You?' Peter Fraser bought his first camera at the age of 7 and went to school in Wales until 1971, when he left to study Civil Engineering for three months at Hatfield Polytechnic, before deciding to study photography at Manchester Polytechnic between 1972 and 1976, repeating his final year due to becoming seriously ill crossing the Sahara Desert in early 1975. Fraserwas an early adopter of colour photography in the UK, and began exhibiting colour photographs in 1982. In 1984, he travelled to Memphis, USA to spend two months with William Eggleston, after meeting him at Eggleston's first UK exhibition opening the previous year. Between 1983 and 1986, Fraser made the exhibitions, Twelve Day Journey, The Valleys Project, Everyday Icons and Towards an Absolute Zero which led to his first publication Two Blue Buckets in 1988. This book won the Bill Brandt Award hosted by the Photographers' Gallery in 1989. In 1990 Fraser was invited to be the British Artist in Residence in Marseilles, which led to the subsequent exhibition and publication Ice and Water. He travelled widely in the early 1990s to scientific research establishments photographing machines at the cutting edge of technology, proposing a series of ‘Portraits' of machines shown and published as Deep Blue. While visiting nearly 60 scientific sites, he frequently photographed in scientific ‘Clean Rooms' where particles of dust above a certain size were not admitted. Subsequently, he decided to start photographing ‘dirt and other low status' material. Simultaneous to this work was a University of Strathclyde commission to make new Art in their Applied Physics Department. This led to two series being combined into a single new series of photographs, Material published in 2002. The same year The Photographers' Gallery showed a 20-year overview of Fraser's work, and in 2004 he was shortlisted alongside Robert Adams, David Goldblatt and Joel Sternfeld for the Citigroup International Photography Prize. In 2006 Fraser was invited to be an Artist in Residence at Oxford University to make photography for the Biochemistry Department. In 2009 he was commissioned by Ffotogallery, Wales, to make work across the country that resulted in the exhibition and publication Lost For Words. In 2012 Fraser exhibited A City in the Mind at the Brancolini Grimaldi Gallery, London. In 2013 Tate St Ives exhibited a selected retrospective of his work, and published a monograph containing photographs from all of Fraser's major series to date. In 2013 Fraser received an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society. In 2017 his exhibition Mathematics was exhibited as part of PhotoEspana 17, and Skinnerboox, Italy, published Mathematics. The first UK exhibition of Mathematics opened at Camden Arts Centre, London in 2018. The accompanying File Notes no 120 published by the gallery, featured a specially commissioned essay The Things that Count by Amy Sherlock, deputy editor of Frieze. www.peterfraser.net Dr. Grant Scott is the founder/curator of United Nations of Photography, a Senior Lecturer and Subject Co-ordinator: Photography at Oxford Brookes University, Oxford, a working photographer, documentary filmmaker, BBC Radio contributor and the author of Professional Photography: The New Global Landscape Explained (Routledge 2014), The Essential Student Guide to Professional Photography (Routledge 2015), New Ways of Seeing: The Democratic Language of Photography (Routledge 2019). © Grant Scott 2021

Jenny (she/her) and Malia (she/her) ask their mom for her thoughts on the first half of arc one of Pale: Lost for Words. Jenny reads a list of CIA torture songs, Malia sings some of them, and Mom takes the word “compare” literally, not realizing that “and contrast” is implied.
