David Nicholls is a critically acclaimed author and BAFTA-winning screenwriter - and he's set to make an appearance at this year's upcoming Auckland Writers Festival. His bestselling book One Day sold millions of copies and went on to become a successful hit series on Netflix. Off the back of his latest hit novel, You Are Here, Nicholls plans to address Kiwi fans - and open up about the pressures of success. "I've written a lot of books set in the past and a lot of books with quite a large time scale - and this is like a little delicate chamber piece, even though it takes place against all these mountains and lakes and rivers. It's a character study." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Here's what's on tap: - All of the National Book Award Longlist for Fiction. Find it here. A lot of great choices; a few headscratchers! - "The Life Impossible," by Matt Haig. It's uplifting! About grief and getting past it.  - More on "The Light Pirate," which starts kind of boring but gets awesome. - "You Are Here," by David Nicholls. Yes, now Sam has read it, too.  - "Brooklyn," by Colm Tóibín. Hannah's not sure why people love it so much. What is she missing? - "Clark and Division," by Naomi Hirahara. Sam doesn't like historical fiction, but he likes this.

Hiya, book clubbers! This month, we read You Are Here by British author David Nicholls. The story follows Michael and Marnie as they are thrown together on a long walk through England. Michael is adrift after his wife has just left him, and he has begun taking himself on long, solitary walks across the English countryside. Marnie is lonely, too. She spends her days hiding in her London flat after her marriage fell apart years ago. She is more comfortable at her computer as a copy editor than really anywhere else in the world. At its heart, it's a book about love and loneliness and… walking. A new David Nicholls books is always an exciting event, and his new novel, You Are Here, does not disappoint. He joins Simon and Matt for a chat about the writing process, creating his characters, the latest adaptation of One Day and how he came to the music choices in this new novel. They also discuss the influence and importance of the pandemic on stories, and how we will be talking (and writing) about it for many years to come. Here's some more info on the book: Marnie is stuck. Stuck working alone in her London flat, stuck battling the long afternoons and a life that often feels like it's passing her by. Michael is coming undone. Reeling from his wife's departure, increasingly reclusive, taking himself on long, solitary walks across the moors and fells. When a persistent mutual friend and some very English weather conspire to bring them together, Marnie and Michael suddenly find themselves alone on the most epic of walks and on the precipice of a new friendship. But can they survive the journey? A new love story by beloved bestseller David Nicholls, You Are Here is a novel of first encounters, second chances and finding the way home. Anabel shares her unusual story growing up in a politically active family in Dominican Republic, who had to find refuge in the US for many years.  Her background provided the impetus to seek a path that would lead her to serve her country. Her calling was working in the UN and multilateral agencies, managing lending and donation programmes in agriculture at a very young age, and later in development cooperation. Following an assignment as Ambassador for Dominican Republic at the Organisation of American States, she was recently appointed by her country to the UN Tourism Agency in a new role where she will continue to be making a difference. We talk about the role of chance in life, leadership lessons as a young female professional, the importance of  carving out one's space and reflect on emerging models in South South cooperation. The book Anabel refers to is From Dessalines to Duvalier: Race, Colour and National Independence in Haiti by David Nicholls, published in 1996.Recorded on 22 May 2023.Instagram: @at.the.coalfaceConnect with Anabel on LinkedIn at linkedin.com/in/anabel-bueno-santana-dolenc-94253bab.And don't forget to subscribe to At the Coalface for new episodes every two weeks.Support the show

Anyone else so emotionally invested in Netflix's One Day to the point it's all you can think about? Just me? Didn't think so! Well, prepare yourself as today we are joined by the show's star, Ambika Mod.  In case you have missed the show of the year/ the best show ever, One Day is based on the best selling book by David Nicholls and follows Ambika's Emma and Dexter (played by Leo Woodall) on the same day, for 20 years as they go from crush, to friendship and the rest is a plot spoiler so I'll leave it to your imagination. (Note: there are plot spoilers in this episode,so consider yourself warned!) In today's episode Ambika joins me to talk about her journey from stand up comedy to landing a role she had secretly manifested for decades in One Day. We also chat about the importance of representation, overcoming imposter syndrome, and Ambika tells me about her own journey with mental health after starring alongside Ben Wishaw in the heartbreaking BBC adaptation of Adam Kay's This is Going To Hurt (which if you missed it, you need to add to your watch list right now!).  This episode is also a mini reunion as it turns out that Ambika and I actually worked at Conde Nast together at the same time! But another reason I love this episode so much, and admire Ambika is because she is a symbol of what you can achieve if you work hard and stay so damn determined. So I hope you will be just as inspired as I am, to get out there and chase your dreams.  If you love this episode as much as me please get in touch with me via social media @joshsmithhosts as I would love a debrief on One Day with you! And speaking of turbulent romances, Alice And Jack comes to Channel 4 this week and sees Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough as a pair of star-crossed lovers. BBC1's Kin, on the other hand, sees an entirely different kind of turmoil as the Kinsella clan go to war (again), and Channel 5's Too Good To Be True explores the perils of unvetted employment (but does allow James to set up a terrible culinary pun).
