In Soviet Russia, podcast listens to YOU! Yakov Smirnoff—comedian, actor, and professor of laughter—joins Andrew Santino to reflect on Soviet roots, finding the American dream through comedy, and why laughter really is the best medicine. Yakov's journey is unreal — from acting alongside legends like Robin Williams, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Richard Pryor, and Tom Hanks… to buying the house where Lenny Bruce died. What a country! This episode is a blast of nostalgia, insight, and Cold War absurdity, with a heart as big as Yakov's smile.

Leave it to Mark and Allen to wait until the podcast is almost done to deliver an interview like this. It was so great to meet with Mike Scully - what a nice guy, a great conversationalist, and a good sport! Not only is his body of work fascinating, but he doesn't mind when we accidentally add credits to his resume that don't even exist (keep your ears peeled to hear Mark make a royal screwup, LOL). The boys were extremely lucky to get a chance like this to talk with Mike around late September 2024. We got to hear about Mike's work on big shows such as Everybody Loves Raymond and The Simpsons (and Parks of course), what he thought about acting as Pawnee citizen Pearl, concerns he had about Champion the 3-Legged Dog, his start in stand-up (and two famous people he met in the process), and many, many other topics. Please tune in and listen to a thoroughly interesting and tremendously entertaining conversation with writer/producer Mike Scully.

Remember the 1985 TV commercial for Miller Lite, in which Yakov Smirnoff says “In America, there is plenty of lite beer and you can always in a party. In Russia, party always finds you.” Yakov was born in Odesa, Ukraine. He defected to the U.S.A. in 1977. Yakov had a lot of success in the United States which led to his line: “What a country.” Beside stand-up comedy he had roles in “Moscow on the Hudson” in which he helped Robin Williams with his Russian dialogue. He was also in films “Money Pit” and “Brewster's Millions.” He appeared on TV's “Night Court” and as a guest on the Johnny Carson “Tonight Show.” Smirnoff was friends with President Ronald Reagan and wrote some of his speech material. An example was “In Russia, if you say take my wife please, you come home…and she's gone!”

Seinfeld, known for his observational humor, views such environments as stifling for creativity due to heavy government censorship and control, which he believes suppresses free expression and prevents dissent. In contrast, Ronny Kenny uses self-deprecating humor to navigate the ironies of daily life under communism, showing that humor can still thrive as a form of escapism and a way to playfully critique societal norms. Yakov Smirnoff, who performed under strict state control, highlights the significant challenges and dangers comedians faced, noting how the government tightly monitored material to prevent rebellion, yet he adapted to these constraints, revealing the resilience of humor even in oppressive conditions.Support the Show.Standup Comedy Podcast Network.co www.StandupComedyPodcastNetwork.comFree APP on all Apple & Android phones....check it out, podcast, jokes, blogs, and More! For short-form standup comedy sets, listen to: "Comedy Appeteasers" , available on all platforms.New YouTube site: https://www.youtube.com/@standupcomedyyourhostandmc/videosVideos of comics live on stage from back in the day. Please Write a Review: in-depth walk-through for leaving a review.Interested in Standup Comedy? Les, Kurt, and Jason are happy that the WGA Strike has ended, but are still venturing beyond Lifetime and Hallmark movies since SAG-AFTRA is still on strike! The guys discuss the big topics on their mind like couples that share a Facebook account and whether or not Jeffrey Dahmer is cancelled. Not cancelled: famous morning radio DJ Roman Polanski). Also not cancelled: Blac Chyna… she may have found love again! Then it's time to take a look at the pilot to the 1986 first-run syndicated sitcom What a Country. While this may seem like it was a Yakov Smirnoff vehicle, it's actually an adaptation of a British sitcom. One can only wonder if the British version featured countless painful racial stereotypes (many courtesy to a super racist school principal not played by Don Knotts). "What a country!" has turned into "What a career!" for Yakov Smirnoff who emigrated to the US from Ukraine in the 1970s and built a career out of playful but pointed jabs at Russia and great "fish out of water" bits about himself. Along the way, Yakov has also managed to become a US citizen, earn a PhD in psychology, become an in-demand keynote speaker, score a number of juicy film and tv roles, and establish a long-running comedy theater in Branson, Missouri. We're not sure where he finds time to sleep! As always, find extra cuts below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Yakov? In the 1980s headlining at Dangerfield's was a mark a comic had arrived (much like getting invited to Johnny Carson's Tonight Show couch). Here's a bit of Yakov (introduced by Rodney himself) from 1984. https://youtu.be/QboXCnKpgtU In the 1980s, Chrysler/Plymouth was fighting for its financial life and its line up of inexpensive cars helped pull them back from the brink (along with some help from the government). Were the cars good? Not really. Were they cheap? Oh, yeah! And did they have Yakov as a spokesperson? Of course! https://youtu.be/hkcImMNx3SU Yakov was a frequent and popular guest on American tv, including this appearance on one of Dick Clark's many variety shows, this one from 1988. https://youtu.be/22VI3eN5r9k

In 1987, ABC celebrated Independence Day by combining an evening of variety with a rally for literacy. Oprah and Robert Urich host from St. Louis as the likes of Suzanne Somers, Yakov Smirnoff, Barbara Mandell, Atlantic Starr, and a choir of 500 singers entertain from across the country. In between, filmed segments show the different ways America celebrates and provide testimonials from adults who've recently learned to read. If that weren't enough, the wife of the vice president makes an appearance! Rick and Mike break it all down and reveal a little of Rick's carny past. #podcast #tv #retrotv #seventies #eighties #abc #oprah #roberturich #july4 #independenceday #america #literacy

No kidding, I have put together live stage recordings from three of the best standup comics you should have heard of. First, from 1983, Dana Carvey doing material that is familiar, yet years before he was on Saturday Night Live. Next is famous Russian Comic Yakov Smirnoff from when he opened for Jerry Seinfeld in 1980. Yakov went on to a tremendous career and is still performing today! Closing we have from that same week, Jerry Seinfeld, as a fresh young comic just out from New York. He too went of to fame & fortune; but years after this live performance. You will enjoy the material just as much now, as the audiences did back then. I am proud that these young guys worked my stages....enjoy!Hosted by: R. Scott EdwardsSupport the show
This is a fun one, a live recording of our 1983 New Years show. In those days we packed the show with amazing talent, and this show had Lois Bromfield, currently living in Germany; but who back then was a funny comedienne. She went on to write for and act on the "Rosanne" show. She also famously came out on the "Arsenio Hall Show" in 1992. Very funny and a bit dirty...Ha! Also on this New Years show was Famous Russian Comic Yakov Smirnoff. He went on to fame and fortune as a writer for Ronald Reagan, movies like "Moscow on the Hudson" w/Robin Williams, "Brewster's Millions" w/Robin Williams, and "The Money Pit" w/Tom Hanks. He still performs out of his own theater in Branson Mo. and consults using his PHD in psychology. As an added bonus, there is a short radio promo Bob and I did for radio from the early 80's...Enjoy!Hosted by:R. Scott EdwardsShort intro to introduce a new podcastSupport the show
