Broadcast Geeks: Find Your Audience, Tell Your Story and Gain a Following Online
I actually hesitated and struggled (internally) in making the necessary decisions around the initial launch of my podcast. Today I chat about my Podcast setup and why I struggled in getting my podcast setup and launched. Though as I write this blog post, I can tell you where I am at with my setup. I have now embedded the recorded, produced and uploaded audio podcast within this post. believe it or not… This is Episode 9!! However To date, I have still not officially launched this Podcast. It is NOT currently listed in iTunes, Stitcher or any of the other Podcasting platforms. Up to now the ONLY place you could have found this audio content was right here within Broadcast Geeks Website. So WHY have I been so hesitant in setting up my Podcast? I have had a few issues that I needed to process before I could proceed. My Podcast Player Indecision Firstly I want to chat about my indecision of Podcast players for my show. Now you may be thinking, Chris… Why would that hold you back, simply change out the player as you go. My problem was I own (and use) Audello and while I love this player, if I used this I would or could also use it for my Podcast RSS Feed. If I decided later on I wanted to change it would mean I may have a lot of work in changing things over. So I held off…
This week I am saddened by the lost of my champ Muhammad Ali. When I was growing up there were two things that were constant in my life. Richard Nixon was President Muhammad Ali was the Greatest Boxer of All Time Today there are lesson I feel we can learn from Muhmmad Ali as podcasters. When I hear name Muhammad Ali there is so much more to a guy that was good in the ring. He Know Both Sides of Boxing There are two ways to win in boxing Don't get hit. He ounce dodged 21 punches in 10 seconds. Hit the other guy. As a child Muhammad would have his brother throw rocks at his head. As I was watching old clips of his fights today, one of his strengths was the ability to not get hit. He also had incredibly fast hands. He punched before you even saw it coming. The Two Ways to Win in Podcasting Create content that positively impacts your audience Intelligently promote it to that audience My equation for downloads is: Value in the episode multiplied by the amount of effort put into promotion = Total Downloads. He Never Stopped Moving As I mentioned her was very hard to hit. Especially early in his career he never stopped dancing around the ring. If he did, it meant you were about to get hit with a ton of punches. Podcasters Need to Keep Moving If we are to keep up with all the other forms of entertainment that are fighting for the attention of our audience, we need to keep moving, and always looking to be better. He Was New Muhammad Ali won the gold medal in the 1964 Olympics (known then as Cassius Clay). He then did something most boxers didn't do. He spoke. He not only spoke, he made poems and boasted about how he was going to to beat his opponent. When most boxers didn't have the intelligent to put together a full sentence, here was one that was fighting to get a microphone in his fave. He Was Noteworthy He won his fist championship fighting Sunny Liston. Sunny Liston was a huge favorite with of 8 to 1. Nobody thought Ali had a chance. When he beat the champ, that was truly noteworthy, and people did indeed take note. By the way, Ali later admitted that he feared Liston, but acted so crazy to intimidate him (and he did). Podcasters: If you truly want to be New and Noteworthy, you need to come up with something new (it's not easy) and create content that is noteworthy. Something that will get your audience. If you want to be New and Noteworthy, be, um, New and Truly Noteworthy. He Was A Man of Integrity When he was drafted he refused. It went against his religious beliefs. The consequences, they stripped him of his title, banned him from boxing for three years (during the prime of his career). Later it was overturned by a unanimous decision by the Supreme Court. Integrity as a podcaster: We need to stand up for what we believe in. Can you imagine if someone said "Do this, or we are removing you from iTunes, and every other directory, we are disabling your RSS feed, and we're taking your microphone? We can't sell out to bad sponsors that don't fit our show, and to strategies that are less than transparent. You have integrity when you start podcasting, once you lose it, it is very hard, if not impossible, to get back. He Used His Authority For Good He could've taken his money, and retired. Instead he had one of his biggest fights in Africa? Why because he wanted to boost the economy. When he was banned from boxing her was a speaker at colleges. He embraced diversity. Giving Back as a Podcaster We can give back by supporting causes like the Podcast Awards, New Media Europe (which are currently struggling). We can use our microphone to help people, and to spotlight those things that need to be in the spotlight. He Apologized For Crossing the Line Ali was famous for calling his opponents names. Leading up to one fight he called Joe Frazier a Gorilla. While Ali did this to rile up his appointment and increase ticket sales (and it worked in both cases) he later would apologize to Joe's son, and eventually to Joe and the two became friends before Joe passed away. Podcasters can take back words. I know I've said things about Audello, and I once made some remarks about an article online that crossed the line of fact related, and got personal. I have since apologized for my words, removed the comments from their blog, and we have patched things up. There are times when your podcast is being outranked by a show that hasn't done an new episode in years. The quick answer is no. Ask your audience to review you. First things first, I'm not a lawyer and do not take this as legal advice. Always speak to a lawyer. A few weeks ago I made a video about the service Audello. At the end of the video I saw something that really upset me. I was already somewhat upset as I can see where people are going to spend $300 for a product that is unnecessary. I took to the video camera, and the blog post with smoke coming out of my ears. My title warned people to stay away from this product and I called it a scam. That is over line. These as Yosemite Sam would say, "Are fighting words" and you know what? He's right. I went looking for what words could get you sued and I found a great post from Deb McCalister. She has some great advice (deb has worked in PR for a long time). Don't Be a Warning Bell Avoid comments like WARNING: Beware of… (or the variations: Stay away from…Don’t do business with…DO not hire…Do not buy…Do not waste money…) SCAM ALERT: (Company or individual’s name) is a con artist… (or the variations: I got taken in by…These scammers took my money…Don’t trust…) (Company or individual’s name) lied (or the variations: misrepresented…promised but did not deliver…ruined my property description by doing shoddy work…did shoddy work…is the worst company description…) She also stated that you want to keep things personal: Focus on your own experience, and don’t tell other people what to do. Keep your language in the first person. “I hired…” “I found…” “I paid…” “I thought…” “I feel… You should try to avoid telling people what to do. Give them the facts that you found, and let them make a decision. Don't Threaten Tactics to avoid saying I’m going to make it my business to tell everyone I meet what a crook you are. I am going to tell everyone not to do business with you. If you don’t fix the problem you caused, I am going to ruin your reputation online. So what did I say that was so bad? I called it a scam (it's not a scam is where you give people money and get nothing in return - you do get something in return with Audello). I told people not to buy it. Like I said, don't tell people what to do. Give them the facts that you found, and let them decide. Be Ready to Prove Your Claims What Would My Updated Review Be? I downloaded and installed Audello last week. On my computer I could never get it to launch. I didn't contact their tech support as my goal was to get an overview of the program so I could talk about it. Their web interface was really all I needed. I do my recording in other software (so I didn't need it). Here are some of their features Playlists Future Dating of Shows The Ability to see where people stop listening Split Testing Audio bars Of all the features the one I feel is unique is split testing. This is geared toward having a selling proposition on a page. So if you have a page setup to collect email addresses, you could see what audio message worked best at getting people to sign up for your email list. Playlists can be done with the free plugin powerpress. Future dating of shows can be done in Wordpress. The ability to see how long people are listening is available if you are on the Stitcher platform. All of those features are free. This is where Audello will say that the main advantage of Audello is that all these features are under one platform (and that would be true). It is also true that Audello is around $197 - $294. When I imported my feed, not all the details came across. If you have multiple shows on Libsyn, when you upload a show through Audello it will randomly pick which show to assign the file (that is not acceptable in my opinion). So the software has bugs (most new software does), but for $297 I expected more. Mentioned in this segment: EFF ONline Defamation Law and Deb Mcalisiter Article Here is the message I received Brute Protect Plugin Last Saturday the School of Podcasting and Ask the Podcast Coach had Brute Force attacks that made it hard for my website to stay online. It was a horrible feeling. Working with the tech support at Host gator they determined that I was under a brute force attack. I searched for a plugin to help and found the Brute Force attack plugin. This free plugin was recently purchased by Automatic (the people who make Wordpress). The idea is they are creating a giant database of attackers that it is blocking. It also will email you when your site is down (and when it comes back up). Over the last 19 hours it has blocked 20 attempts to login to my site. If your site is having an issues, this seems to be helping. You can learn more about it at https://bruteprotect.com/ My Podcast Reviews Now Includes Stitcher Reviews I want to thank everyone who has written a review in iTunes or Stitcher. I've been using My Podcast Reviews to track these (and all the reviews I've had over the years). It's definitely worth the money as I don't have to go in and dig through all the international stores to see my reviews (i.e.e the ones from Australia, Canada, etc). It's a great way to keep up to date with what people are saying about you. Appendipity Podcaster Pro Now Compatible with PowerPress You can use this theme and leave Powerpress enabled, but turn of the ability for PowerPress to place a player in your post (or use both and have Appendipity at the top of the post and PowerPress on the bottom). In a word, yes! Daniel J. Lewis in The Audacity to podcast episode 199 did a review of Audello and before he did, he talked about us Podcast Geezers being stuck in our ways. Well, it's true, I admit it :: I'm a podcast Geezer. I think my way is the best way to podcast (for me and as many people as I can convince) . Do I think that will always be the case? No. Do I see it changing anytime soon. Maybe, but Audello isn't really it (just from what I know now). I'm thinking we should have T-shirts made up for the New Media Expo for us "Geezers". Happy Podcasting!
This episode is about Audello Podcasting Software - why it's important, what it does, how easy it is to use and set up and how to get it.
I'm going to cut through all the hype and reveal some of the truths in my Audello review for podcasting.
JQ wanted to talk about water boarding but I insisted we discuss story boarding. We did both. Plus a lot of talk on explaindio and audello
Trying to Do a Live Call In Show Tools we use: bossjock studio to play sound effects Callinstudio.com to patch in Live Callers Magic Jack to add a phone line You DO have the skills to podcast. You may want to start out just making content and then add the callers and live streaming later. Audello Final Thoughts [13:35] Dave lost his cool in a video when it appears a company lied to him about the length of time a discount was available. We have to make sure our facts are accurate. I was surprised that I was basing some actions on facts that have changed over time. Looking back I should have waited until I had really tested it to report on it. Dave will be checking out simplecast.fm in the future. Jim and Dave are currently playing with Media Fire. Come up with a list of criteria to base your facts on. Volume Levels [41:00] Tools mentioned: auphonic.com When traveling I was surprised on how much different shows had VERY different volumes levels. The Chair Unplugged the Phone![47:00] Chris Nesi from House of Ed Tech What is the Purpose of a Newsletter[48:22] Jim uses it to send a monthly recap of his shows. It makes your links ONE click away. You can use a company like Mailchimp or Aweber (Dave uses Aweber). Dreamcrushers [50:25] (Caller Michael) What do we think of My Podcast World hosting? In general Dave is not a fan of free podcast hosting. While it may be cool for a while, NUMEROUS companies have tried this and they all go out of business eventually. Who is Scott Smith? Offending People Scott does a business with his podcasts like Motivation to Move. According to Mike he said something offended and Mike unsubscribed. You are not going to be able to avoid offending someone. You do the best you can.
From last week… Update on the Scammy Spammy podcasting service I wouldn't name. Well I'm naming it this week. Audello. The service doesn't seem unreasonable other than the price, but the claims the marketing of it makes, just make me feel icky. Dave Jackson did a video review of Audello and he had not much good to say about it. ALMOST everything they claim the software does can be done with a little learning for FREE. Sometimes paying to save time isn't a bad thing. But with Podcasting, it's really not THAT hard and it's worth putting the time in for more reasons than just saving money. I've been around the internet for a long time. Before the web in fact, and I've seen scams come and scams go. Internet marketers, as a rule, can get sucked into promoting something that isn't the best because it offers the best commissions. I think you are going to see a lot of that coming soon. My rules for internet marketing pitches are this: 1. If the checkout system they use is Clickbank, 9 times out of 10 it's not worth your time or money. (Audello is through clickbank) 2. If the price ends with a 7, it's likely not worth it. (Audello is normally $297 “on sale” for $197) 3.If they have a time limit before the price goes up, it's not worth it. (Audello's price WAS reported to go up in 3 days, 1 day, several hours and it changes every time you go to the site. It's now $297 with an add-on $97 commercial license) 4. If there is a video on every page with a british voiceover, it makes me think scam. (see audello's video marketing) I'm not saying that audello is a scam, but it sure isn't the deal that you are going to hear all the hype about. Just be careful. You could spend that $400 on something MUCH more useful for your podasting adventure such as a New Mic, Mixer, Recorder, Proper hosting or some cool artwork. ____________________ Auphonic Last week I talked about the Auphonic leveler web service (auphonic.com). Last episode was “leveled and processed” with it. This week I'm trying out the desktop software. This *may* be a better deal. It's $89 (notice no 7) and $399 for a commercial license. (they define a commercial license is for people or companies that make more than $20,000 directly from their processed audio) Most podcasters can get away with the $89 license. I will let you know if I buy the desktop license or I sign up for a monthly plan for the web service. I'm leaning toward the web license for now. ____________________ What's in a Name? (or title) Back in the olden days of podcasting everyone put the show number in their title. I've been doing some thinking and even though I did this myself for as long as I've been podcasting, I'm changing it up. I will continue to put my show number in the title, but I'm putting it at the end. You might notice, if you are looking at my feed, that I renamed all of my episodes to that format. Subject first then the podcast episode number. I'm still going to name them with the show number. This helps me keep them straight on my computer and on my server (and stats). ___________________ Wordpress Default Theme 2014 - My 5 reasons to use it over custom themes. 1. It's FREE! We know that free isn't always good, but in this case, it works. 2. Most plugins are tested against the default themes in Wordpress. This means you are less likely to have issues with plugins. Powerpress is tested against 2014 first. When troubleshooting issues (if you have them) it's one less thing that could be the cause. I would say about 25% of the support calls I get due to feed issues, it's the custom theme someone is using that caused the problem. It's a lot like the reason to use mp3 instead of m4a for your audio files. m4a will work, but it can cause problems for some users. 3. It looks good, it is “Responsive” and it's simple. (Keep It Simple Stupid) 4. It's customizable enough. With some tricks using the header image, you can get it to look very custom.
Today we have a fun toy from my audience, we discover new podcasts with Ben Kruger, as talk about more things to worry about when it comes to Audello, and I answer your questions about the School of Podcasting and changing your podcast information in iTunes. Call into the show at 888-563-3228 Because of my podcast - I can listen to podcasts in the Shower A listener from CHINA sent me a bluetooth speaker that allows me to listen to podcasts in the show. Thank you Kevin Deng for the cool gift. I plug it into a usb device (like my computer) to charge it, then there is a suction cop on the back and I can stick it to the shower wall. My iphone can connect to the show via bluetooth. I can pause, skip, and stop the podcasts right on the player. If someone calls the device turns into a speaker phone. That would be weird to take a call in the shower. When the power is getting low, the device tells you to charge it. Thanks so much to Kevin. I am really loving it. Reverse Engineering Podcast Listeners [4:15] I was curious how people FIND podcasts. We all obsess about iTunes, Stitcher, and other directories. In many cases the podcasts I listen to did not get on my phone by me doing a search. Colin Gray from Podcraft (podcraft.net) who does a show about podcasting says that word of mouth seems to be the main way he has found podcasts. Colin is the 6th person to tell me about the Startup podcast which is a story of a person starting a podcast network to create shows that tell stories. It's very interesting, and the producer used to produce This American Life (one of the top rated podcasts in iTunes). What was your Absolutely Favorite Podcast in 2005? I did this last year. If you could only listen to ONE podcast, what would it be. Please give me: 1. The name of the show 2. The website address 3. A brief description of the show 4. WHY you listen (this is the biggie) 5. Then tell us briefly about your show. Be sure to include your website address. My plan (like last year) is to have these transcribed and turned into a PDF. I'm also going to take last year's submissions and combine them in with this years submissions and turn them into a book for sale on Amazon. So you will get your voice played on my podcast, you will be in the PDF and in the Kindle book. I am taking submissions in November 2014. This way I can assemble it in December with the episode being played at the end of the year (12/28/14). You can call them in 888-563-3228, record an email them to me (128 mp3), or using the speakpipe button below. Last 5 in 5 with Ben Kruger [10:15] 1. Time Ferris Show 2. Marketing In Your Car 3. A new mixer will not bring your more listeners (unless you sound is really bad). I appeared on the New Media Show with Rob Greenlee and Todd Cochrane talking about the New Media Expo (as I'm the Director of Podcasting) but we also started to talk about Soundcloud. Rob shared that their RSS feeds are oftn not compliant and missing itunes specs. You can subscribe to the New Media Show in itunes using this link. Podcast Review Show [22:10] We review the Gospel Light and Truth Hour on the latest episode of the Podcast Review Show. If you are looking to have two experts with a combine experience of 30 years give you unbiased feeback on your show, get your podcast reviewed. Is Audello False Advertising? [25:10] I spoke last week about Audello and how their claims are exaggerated and that you can do a lot of what they are doing with free software. It was released this week to the tune of $297. That is crazy. I signed up as an Affiliate so I could hopefully get a closer look. Once approved, I saw videos where they have you submitting a feed created by Audello to iTunes. This makes me worried. I asked their support if there was a way to redirect their feed in the event you want to stop using their service. The support response wasn't certain of what I was talking about, and they said if it didn't exist they could always create it. Then a listener sent me a screenshot of John Lee Dumas commenting on Audello as they are using his image on their site. The bad new is John is NOT USING THEIR SYSTEM. When I see a company do this (in the same way that podbean.com puts people on their front page that aren't using their service it's to make them look better than they are. This is false advertising. Audello has a generous affiliate program so be careful as everyone is going to be saying this is the best thing since sliced bread (because they want that affiliate commission). If you go in, go in with your eyes wide open. Changing Your Information in iTunes [25:00] Every Saturday I do a live call in show called Asked the Podcast Coach. This week we took a week off to work on the New Media Expo. So I'm answering some question here. Your show titles are the headline of your episodes. They are very important.
