Sources Sought notices on SAM.gov are one of the most underused free marketing tools in federal contracting, and most small businesses scroll right past them. In this episode, Eric Coffie breaks down exactly what happens during the government's market research phase and why your SBA profile could have contracting officers reaching out to you with contract opportunities before a solicitation ever hits the street. What you'll take away from this episode: Sources Sought and RFIs are market research, not bids — most small businesses dismiss them because they say "for market research purposes only," but responding puts you on a contracting officer's radar before anyone else is in the game. Your SBA/DSBS profile is your silent sales rep — when your profile is current, keyword-rich, and matched to the right NAICS codes, agencies find you through the Dynamic Small Business Search and reach out directly for quotes and capability information. Real proof it works — a WOSB member received an inbound message from a contracting officer based on her DSBS profile, gave a price, and was awarded the contract two days later as a WOSB set-aside, all before a formal solicitation was published. Being engaged early puts you in the pre-solicitation phase — if you're not talking to government buyers, attending market research calls, or responding to RFIs, you're invisible during the phase where relationships and awards are actually shaped. More small businesses have websites than SBA profiles — but agencies don't do market research through your website; they search DSBS, making your SBA profile the single highest-leverage free asset you can optimize today. #906 What if the most powerful lead generation tool for your business costs absolutely nothing? In part one of this two-part episode, host Brien Gearin sits down with college admissions consultant and former PR professional Carter Osborne, who shares how he spent four years juggling two full-time jobs before making the leap to run his own business — and how he used strategic media relations to fuel its growth. Carter breaks down why getting featured in outlets like CNBC builds instant credibility with potential clients, how to identify the right media targets across three tiers of publications, and why the key to landing coverage isn't selling yourself — it's making a reporter's job easier. Whether you're still in side-hustle mode or already running your own business, Carter's framework for crafting pitches that actually get responses is something every entrepreneur needs to hear! What we discuss with Carter: + Side hustle to full-time leap + The hidden cost of doing both + PR as free lead generation + Third-party validation builds trust + Organic vs. pay-to-play media + Tiered media list strategy + Crafting a newsworthy hook + Building real reporter relationships + Lead with their needs, not yours Thank you, Carter! #907 What does it actually take to turn a cold email into a media feature — and then turn that feature into a lasting relationship? In part two of this two-part episode, Carter Osborne picks up where he left off, diving deep into the craft of pitching reporters the right way. Carter explains why templates are the enemy of a great pitch, how to tailor your outreach to each reporter's specific beat, and why brevity might be the single most important element of any cold email. He also shares what to expect after a reporter says yes — whether that's a live interview or an email Q&A — and how to maintain those relationships without becoming the person they dread seeing in their inbox. Plus, Carter opens up about a hard-learned lesson from a Wall Street Journal reporter he accidentally scared off with an overly enthusiastic email. If you've ever wondered how small businesses can realistically measure the ROI of PR efforts, Carter breaks that down too — and makes a compelling case for why media relations might be the highest-leverage, zero-cost growth tool any entrepreneur is sleeping on! What we discuss with Carter: + Why templates kill a good pitch + Matching your pitch to the reporter's beat + Brevity is everything in cold outreach + Using subject lines that get opened + What happens after a reporter says yes + Interview vs. email Q&A formats + Keeping reporter relationships warm without being annoying + The Wall Street Journal lesson learned the hard way + Why PR metrics are notoriously hard to measure + Media relations as a zero-cost growth tool Thank you, Carter! Host Jeremy C. Park interviews Megan McInnis, Founder and Executive Director of Doing Good, a 501(c)3 B2B nonprofit that serves other agencies by providing marketing and PR tools and opportunities. She describes how the organization started when she was looking for positive information about nonprofits in Nashville, eventually speaking with over 300 people about their experiences with nonprofits. Megan outlines their current monthly process of celebrating one organization through podcast episodes, blog posts, social media, and press releases, while also serving as a matchmaker to connect nonprofits with other potential media and marketing partners. She explains that Doing Good is entirely volunteer-run with team members located across the country, though about half are in Middle Tennessee. She describes the volunteer base as diverse, including creative people at various experience levels who volunteer remotely to help celebrate the work of nonprofits across the country. Megan explains how Doing Good seeks to celebrate nonprofits and volunteers through nominations on their website, with a focus on providing visibility during relevant times or events. She notes that while planning can vary depending on the situation, they prefer working further in advance to allow for more creativity and additional opportunities for the organizations being featured. Megan mentions the example of the Middle Tennessee Space Society being highlighted during the eclipse as an instance of timing-specific celebration. Megan discusses feedback from nonprofit partners regarding their service. The partners express amazement at receiving service at no cost and appreciate the overall experience, including their first podcast interviews. Megan emphasizes that the service not only provides valuable content but also shows appreciation for the nonprofits' work. She discusses a new TV show opportunity that is ready to launch but needs funding. The show is planned as a weekly half-hour program combining documentary and reality TV elements, similar to Extreme Makeover Home Edition and Dirty Jobs, focusing on volunteer work across different organizations with the same mission. The show aims to highlight various volunteer efforts, provide visibility to organizations, and surprise volunteers with gifts or celebrity visits. The discussion touches on starting with three episodes and seeking support from both individual and corporate donors to help reach the necessary funding levels. Megan invites listeners to volunteer with or become media partners for Doing Good, emphasizing the importance of various contributions including donations and providing meeting spaces. She shares contact information including the website doinggood.tv and phone number 615-934-5087. Megan expresses gratitude to Jeremy and the cityCURRENT team for their partnership and shared commitment to community impact. After graduating college and getting “good jobs” just like we're told we're supposed to do, Chelsea and Bailey quickly realized they weren't cut out for that life. They were both unhappy being apart from each other and while their jobs were in their fields of interest they didn't fulfill them. After some brainstorming they decided that real estate was the path they needed to take. After getting licensed and trained they noticed that the methods for acquiring clients were very old school and transactional, so they decided to implement some of their own strategies as well. They paired old ways, new ways, and probably most importantly a lot of hard work to become successful real estate agents and eventually brokers. Wealth is not created by selling real estate, it's created by buying real estate. They realized this and began investing for the future. They have several cool properties at the moment and are always looking for opportunities. You can find my form "See If You Qualify for Free Marketing" at:https://form.jotform.com/241068502657053Diversified Payments:http://www.diversifiedpayments.com/wealthycowboy
Andy developed a love for roping and horses and livestock at a young age. When it came time to “grow up” he didn't really know what he wanted to do. Andy tried college a couple times and he tried working a “real” job but he was never fulfilled by it. With the push from his grandpa Andy took a big chance and moved to TX. He didn't know anyone besides some connections his family had, but he knew it was a big opportunity. Andy bounced around helping shoe horses, trade livestock, and any odd job he could find to get by. His network began to grow and bigger opportunities presented themselves. Andy began to auctioneer different sales, he bought a car lot, started a roping cattle sale, and started ranching his own stock. Andy's big risks paid off and he developed a big roping cattle sale and ended up owning his own salebarn. Andy plans to continue ranching and is looking for new opportunities after the salebarn sold. You can find my form "See If You Qualify for Free Marketing" at:https://form.jotform.com/241068502657053Diversified Payments:http://www.diversifiedpayments.com/wealthycowboy

Kasey followed his love of the outdoors and found a way to monetize it. He started as a county extension agent barely getting by and started a side business helping people with large ranches sell hunts. His side business began to grow and he eventually got a client that changed his life, Gary Keller. Gary mentored him and helped him get started in the real estate business. The only problem was Keller-Williams didn't have a farm/ranch division so Kasey helped create it and make it successful. Kasey also understands the importance of investing for the future and buys many different types of real estate to grow his wealth. Giving back is a huge thing with Kasey personally and his business. Kody started out with gold buckle dreams in the rodeo industry. His drive to win the all around led him to compete in all the timed events, but that wasn't enough. He thought he could get more points if he got in the cutting. Little did he know that his connection to the cutting world led him to an introduction to one of the greatest of all time Buster Welch. Kody saw the opportunity in front of him and was able to go work for Buster on his ranch. He learned what hard work meant, a lot about cowboying, and a lot about the relationship between a horse and a cow. He realized that there may be more out there than day working and rodeoing for a living, so, with some encouragement from his better half, he decided to load up and move to Weatherford to learn the cutting horse industry. After working for and around other trainers he finally decided to go out on his own. It's definitely had its ups and downs but Kody is considered one of the best cutting horse trainers in the industry. Kody is also looking at other opportunities that don't require manual labor and that's how he got in 817 Horse Sales with his longtime friends.
