Well folks, this is it. The series finale of Ballers. Things get emotional as Dave and Joel recap the final episode of the show and take a walk down memory lane to discuss how the various plot lines, character arcs, locations and cool suits have changed and evolved over the past five seasons. The episode begins with a discussion about the recent Elizabeth Warren interview in Entertainment Weekly where she's asked exclusively about her love of the show. Dave and Joel feel seen by the fact that the presidential candidate has many of the same takes and opinions as themselves. They also take a step back to look at the show as a whole by asking what the show wants us to think about money, power, capitalism and the character of Spencer/The Rock going forward. Is Ballers good? You'll have to tune in to the final episode of Ballin' Out to find out!
On this, the second to last episode ever in the history of Ballers, Dave and Joel gather to bid farewell to the story arc of Charles Greane and his meteoric rise up the ranks of NFL management. They begin with a look at the Spencer/Joe relationship and the hasty resolution of what has been a season-long feud between the two main characters. They also applaud the 10/10 performance by "Swole Elon Musk" aka the owner of the LA Rams in the Ballers multiverse. They conclude the episode with a look at all the other plot lines and make predictions for how the series will play out in the upcoming series finale episode. All that and the episode MVP this week on of Ballin' Out!
On this episode, Dave and Joel jump right in and discuss Spencer finally making his big push for the players to have lifetime healthcare, and how it doesn’t go quite as planned. After a big breakdown of the outdoor conference room where the meeting is held, our hosts debate how it is that Spencer continually gets bested in whatever role he’s asked to play. They also look at Charles and his declining health, and whether we’ll see him in yet another job by the end of the season. Also, a quick check-in with the Ballers romantic relationships, with Joe being broken up with by his work GF as well as Jason totally botching the proposal. All that and this week’s episode MVP on this episode of Ballin’ Out!
On this very special episode of Ballin' Out, Dave and Joel are joined by their friend, writer and comedian Jen D'Angelo. Jen is world-famous for her love and affection for Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson and might possibly be the preeminent "rock-ologist" currently operating in the United States. After discussing her ground-breaking meeting with The Rock, they then dive into the details of the episode. They begin at the end, with the shooting of Kisan, and discuss exactly what we're to believe the show wants us to think of him and the choices surrounding his downfall. They also discuss the introduction of the Riot Games offices, Charles' meeting with Alvin Kamara and Spencer's continued quarantine that prevents him from interacting with real live humans. All that and this week's episode MVP on this edition of Ballin' Out!
We discuss the HBO series, Ballers Season 4 episode 7, "The Kids are Aight".

With Dave out this week due to a major PED controversy, Joel takes over hosting duties and welcomes special guests Chris Wade and Molly O’Brien from the "And Introducing" podcast for a free-wheeling discussion of one of the more perplexing episodes in the history of Ballers. Joel, Chris, and Molly discuss what exactly it is that Sports X does as a company, as well as the strange career arc of Russell Brand. Then, they delve into Spencer’s continued saga to purchase the Kansas City Chiefs, the drive-by shooting that opens the episode, and take a very in-depth look at Vernon’s sudden and deeply bizarre desire to become an eSports athlete. Finally, they wrap things up with another thrilling edition of The State of the Rock, as they discuss his new marriage (as announced on Instagram), what it means to be married to a man who is lifting weights at midnight on his honeymoon, and exactly how many helpers it must take to transport his Iron Paradise everywhere he goes.

On this week’s recap, Dave and Joel wonder how it is exactly that Spencer has the money to buy a multi-billion dollar NFL franchise (and whatever happened to that lawsuit with the NCAA?). They discuss Spencer’s summer beach reading list and finally get the answer they’ve been looking for when it comes to whether or not boogie boarding is actually a sport. Next they wonder what happened to Joe’s character and whether or not Joe and Spencer are broken up or if they’re on the road back to making up. The episode finishes up with a quick look at Instagram followers, The Rock’s insistence that his characters remind viewers of his off-screen persona and whether Vernon really has what it takes to make it as a eSports athlete. All that and season predictions on this week’s episode of Ballin’ Out!

This season of HBO's Ballers and Haters in the Building conclude in a stunningly similar fashion as the time you've spent watching Ballers Season 4 and listening to Haters in The Building Season 2 comes into question and suddenly reveals itself as the true con.
On this episode of Ballin’ Out, Dave and Joel are joined by special guest Dan Foster (@danielpfoster) from the “Artist vs. Mogul” podcast to discuss the season four ballers finale. The trio breaks down the “Strasmore vs. NCAA” lawsuit, discusses the conclusion of the Nike/Skater plot and tries to understand what the heck happened with Charles and Ricky at that press conference. All that and the episode’s MVPs on the latest edition of Ballin’ Out!
On this episode of Ballin’ Out, Dave and Joel break down arguably their favorite episode of the season. They go deep on Spencer’s excoriation of the NCAA as one of the most “powerful and corrupt” institutions in sports and debate the highs (and lows) of the spencer vs. the NCAA plotline. They then pivot to Charles and Ricky debating how the Rams should get involved in the NFL social justice protests before turning their sights to the up and downs of Joe’s relationship with his favorite teen skaters. All that and this episodes MVPs on the latest episode of Ballin’ Out!
On this episode of Ballin’ out, Dave and Joel realize they’re not keeping up with the workout lifestyle necessary to support their cheat day diets. They discuss the deepening feud between Spencer, the NCAA and Ohio State, and look at how the OSU program is presented like an organized crime syndicate. They discuss how the show is at its best when it leans into the drama of the plot and how some of the sillier plots this season are a little hard to follow. They conclude with a look at Charles and Julie Greane and make a pitch for this episode’s MVP.
On this (very late) episode of Ballin’ Out, Dave kicks off the episode with a sincere mea culpa for delaying this week’s recording. After Joel accepts his apology on behalf of Ballin’ Out nation, the two hosts discuss the way the show portrays the NCAA and its relationship to student-athletes. They also discuss the Joe/Reggie plot and try to figure out exactly where we lost the thread with those two characters. Finally Dave takes a walk down memory lane with Rodney Peete before they both award their episode MVP’s.
On this very special episode of “Ballin’ Out”, Dave and Joel record their first live podcast! With both co-hosts in the same room, they recap their weekend of boogie-boarding, football watching and Ballers content consumption before diving into this week’s episode of Ballers. They start with a discussion of how the LA Rams organization fits into the larger ballers multi-verse, then tackle Spencer’s relationship with Q, the up and coming high school player slash dirty money magnet. Dave then reveals some earth-shattering news about the actor that plays Kisan Teague before both hosts demonstrate their misunderstanding of the the word MVP. All that and Rob Corddry hungover monologues on this episode of Ballin’ Out!
On this Labor Day edition of Ballin’ Out, Dave and Joel make it into the recording studio on a holiday to discuss the hard work Joe and Spencer are doing at SportsX now that they’re in charge. The two hosts ask the questions: “Who are the good guys here?” and also “What day is it?” as they review Spencer, Joe and Jason’s actions. They also look at Ricky (and TTD’s) comeback plotline and take a moment to recognize the budding relationship between Spencer and Jada.
On this episode of Ballin’ Out, Dave and Joel look at how the show has addressed the intersecting issues of mental health, depression, and CTE throughout the four seasons. They discuss the significance of Spencer’s dreams and wonder what a different (darker) version of that conversation might look like on the show. They then turn their attention to the character of Lance (Russell Brand) and examine how he’s been positioned as the villain in this season. Next, a quick look at the various romantic couples on the show is highlighted (or rather, lowlighted) by a discussion of Jason and his retrograde views on relationships. All that plus this episode’s MVPs on this week’s episode of Ballin’ Out
The Boys pay tribute to the late John McCain before diving into the thorny racial politics of BALLERS Season 4, Episode 2.
On this brand new episode of Ballin' Out, Dave takes another L on the personal fitness front before jumping into a brand new episode of Ballers. Dave and Joel discuss the introduction of the new surfer character, Parker, and break down the relationship between his racial justice plot and the wider world of Ballers partnerships. They also take a look at the latest "hot mom" in the Ballers multi-verse and dig deep into the memory banks to try to figure out just why exactly Charles and Ricky hate each other? All that and this week's episode MVP on the latest episode of Ballin' Out.

The summer may be over, but before we jump into our fall TV reviews, we thought we'd revisit the TV shows which rounded out our 2017 summer season. In this first part of a two-part discussion, the Critic and the Referee talk about summer shows that were well worth watching and others that fell just short of the mark. Sit back, relax and revisit the best of summer TV right here with Why Watch That! Game of Thrones (penultimate season; Season 7, HBO) George R.R. Martin's best-selling book series "A Song of Ice and Fire" is brought to the screen as HBO sinks its considerable storytelling teeth into the medieval fantasy epic. It's the depiction of two powerful families -- kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars and honest men -- playing a deadly game for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, and to sit atop the Iron Throne. The penultimate season focuses primarily on the convergence of the show's main plotlines, featuring major events such as Daenerys Targaryen arriving in Westeros with her army and three dragons and waging war against the Lannisters, Jon Snow forging an alliance with Daenerys in an attempt to unite their forces against the White Walker army, Arya and Bran returning to Winterfell and reuniting with their sister Sansa, and the army of the dead breaching the Wall (with the help of a reanimated wight dragon) and entering the Seven Kingdoms. Shooter (Season 2, USA) Former Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger has entered a new phase of his life, living in exile after leaving the military. His civilian life doesn't last as long as he expects, though, with the discovery of a plot to kill the president. Former commanding officer Isaac Johnson, now a Secret Service agent, draws Swagger into the investigation by seeking his expertise for a clandestine operation to keep the commander in chief safe. The series is based on the 2007 film of the same name, which was an adaptation of Stephen Hunter's novel "Point of Impact." Queen of the South (Season 2, USA) While living in the barrio of Jalisco, Mexico, poor Teresa Mendoza falls in love with a member of a successful drug cartel, hoping the love will help her rise above the hopelessness she feels in her life. When it doesn't happen, she is forced to flee the country after her boyfriend is murdered. She seeks refuge in America, where she teams up with an unlikely person from her past to take down the leader of the drug ring that is after her. Teresa ends up starting her own drug empire, becoming one of the world's wealthiest women in the process. With her success, she discovers that money doesn't fix all of her problems, and she can only depend on herself if she wants to stay one step ahead of others and stay alive. Younger (Season 4, TV Land) Trying to start a new career gets more difficult as you age, which suddenly single-mom Liza realizes when she tries to re-enter the working world at 40. After a young tattoo artist convinces her she looks younger, Liza decides to do something about it. Her solution revolves around trying to pass herself off as 26, courtesy of a makeover by her best friend, Maggie. The newfound confidence helps get her a job assisting temperamental Diana. Teaming with 20-something co-worker Kelsey, Liza hopes to make it a dream career -- while no one discovers her secret. She later has to deal with the fallout of the truth after revealing her secret to Kelsey. Suits (Season 7, USA) In need of an associate, big-time Manhattan corporate lawyer Harvey Specter hires the only guy who impresses him -- college dropout Mike Ross. The fact that Ross isn't actually a lawyer isn't lost on Specter, who believes his new right-hand man is a legal prodigy with the book smarts of a Harvard law grad and the street smarts of a hustler. However, in order to keep their jobs, the charade must remain strictly between these two unconventional thinkers. Insecure (Season 2, HBO) Modern-day black women might be described as strong and confident; in other words, just the opposite of Issa and Molly. As the best friends deal with their own real-life flaws, their insecurities come to the fore as together they cope with an endless series of uncomfortable everyday experiences. Created by co-star Issa Rae and writer/comic Larry Wilmore ("The Daily Show With Jon Stewart"), the comedy series looks at the friendship of two black women in a unique, authentic way. It features the music of both indie and established artists of color, and touches on a variety of social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience. Ballers (Season 3, HBO) A superstar during his football playing days, Spencer Strasmore tries to find the same success as a financial manager for current players in sun-splashed Miami. Heeding his boss Joe's instruction to "monetize his friendships," Spencer builds a client base of young phenoms and veteran stars alike, but his role in their lives far exceeds money management as he struggles to help them navigate the many traps that come with life as big-time "ballers." The series is created by Stephen Levinson ("Entourage," "Boardwalk Empire") and stars Dwayne Johnson as Spencer. The Strain (Season 4, FX) Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of the CDC's New York-based Canary Project, is called upon to investigate when an airplane lands with everybody on board dead. What his team discovers is a viral outbreak that has similarities to an ancient strain of vampirism. As the virus begins to spread, Goodweather works with his team and a group of the city's residents to wage a war that could hold humanity's fate in its hand. All good things must come to an end and on the season finale of Ballin’ Out, Dave, Joel and special repeat guest, Chris Wade, join together to give their takes on this episode and the Ballers season as a whole. In what was already an unprecedented weekend in the real universe of the NFL, this episode of Ballers carried with it an extra level of weight as it dealt deftly (and sometimes with a heavy, heavy hand) with the issues of wealth, race and the role of public perception in the modern NFL. The guys discuss the resolution of the season's major plot to bring a team to Vegas and break down the Rock and co's shifting moral and monetary motivations. In the second half of the episode, the three hosts discuss the implications of President Trump’s recent comments on the ongoing protests by NFL players and coaches on the issue of police brutality and social justice.
In the penultimate episode of season three of Ballers, The Rock and Joe take a trip to San Francisco and Oakland to prepare their final pitch for the Vegas stadium deal. The Rock struggles to articulate his desire for a child to Chloe before they split for the episode (and maybe for good?). Spencer learns that there is a competitive bid and doesn't take kindly to the Raiders' lack of communication on that front. Meanwhile, Ricky has a crisis of conscience and announces to the Patriots that he has a concussion and ultimately loses the deal he was about to sign. Dave and Joel finish up this episode with a discussion of how the character of Melvin is both long-overdue and simultaneously problematic and make their predictions for the "winners" and "losers" we'll see in next week's season finale.
In what could be considered one of the richest texts of the season, Dave and Joel begin their breakdown of episode eight of Ballers season three with a look into the budding relationship between the Rock and his new girlfriend, Chloe. Joel breaks down Travis Scott's ongoing product placement in the series while Dave explains how Charles' theories on the Dolphins offensive future represent an entirely new alternate NFL universe. They finish with a look at the ongoing economic mayhem the Rock and Joe are causing with their stadium project and take a moment to ponder what may transpire in the final two episodes of the season.
After a one week hiatus, Joel and Dave are back to break down the last two episodes of Ballers. They track the Ricky Jarrett head injury plot line and his dalliance with his teen neighbor as well as Julie Green's new career as an orthopedic surgeon. They then discuss the ongoing Vegas deal, along with the revelation that the chairman of the board is Mr. Anderson's brother! They close out the episode with some discussion of what's to come and where we're headed as the Rock and crew look to be headed towards financial ruin (again!).
On this week's episode, Dave and Joel are joined by a special guest! Chris Wade (@saywhatagain) joins to give his takes on the Rock's uncanny propensity to throw phones out of car windows and leave Bentleys parked in the left lane of highways. The three guys discuss how the show has not one but two different Dallas Cowboys franchises operating in the same NFL universe before diving into yet another uncomfortable intimate encounter between the Rock and his girlfriend. They get to the bottom of what happened with Ricky Jarrett last week and debate the technological advancements of virtual reality in the Ballers multiverse. All that and more on this week's episode of Ballin' Out!
Joe and Spencer lament the fact that they're not part of the NFL owners "boys club", but what are they actually looking to accomplish? On this episode of Ballin' Out, Dave and Joel revisit the question of whether moving an NFL team to Vegas is truly a noble idea. They look at Spencer's flexible reasoning behind his motivations and question whether anyone on the show will call him out for what it is - an ego play. Joel then brings up the idea of what the show would be like in an alternate universe where Jason the agent is played by a female actor and also whether they've both misread the character of Wayne Hastings. The episode closes out with an examination of why the hell Ricky ended up in that random kid's house. All that and more on this week's episode of Ballin' Out!
On this week’s episode Dave and Joel celebrate the gift of boats with hot tubs before breaking down the current state of the deal to bring the Raiders to Vegas. Joel proposes his “alternative timeline” theory of understanding the Ballers universe while Dave tries to figure out exactly why the Rock might be an “enemy of the league”. Dave and Joel go on to break down the rest of the big moves, doctor’s visits and baby mama drama on this week’s episode of Ballin’ Out. Have questions for Dave and Joel? You can email the show at sstrassmore@gmail.com or reach the guys on Twitter @davekcollins or @joelsinensky.
Spencer makes his way to Vegas to start wining and dining the local politicians needed to approve a stadium deal while Jason tries his hardest to ignore his Mom while waiting in a sketchy playground to win a new client. On the show, Dave discusses whether we should even be rooting for the Rock to convince Las Vegas to spend public money on a stadium while Joel talks us through the steps it takes to go from watching Monster Trucks in a luxury box to actually driving a Monster Truck in order to prove you know what locals love. Chris and Dylan aren't children, or innocent, so they gladly pick apart the Bughuul in their discussions of Sinister 2, the sequel to one of their favourite horror films. We get really sinister, then take on a fair share of new releases coming out this week. Chris watched Kristen Wiig get naked in Welcome to Me, while Dylan watched her not get naked in The Diary of a Teenage Girl. Then we switch gears to talking about TV with Gravity Falls and the first season of Ballers. We conclude with us talking about why Slipknot gets to be used in this podcast and not Boards of Canada - a look inside the creative process.
