This morning we study and analyze a famous passage of Talmud which is recorded as the reason for the destruction of the Bet HaMikdash - the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza. We present an original understanding of this from Rabbi Yochanan Zweig that entreats us to refrain from a very common destructive trait. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
The 2nd Mikdash was destroyed because of Sinas Chinam. What causes us to hate others, and how can we work on it? What are the parameters of Sinas Chinam, who are we obligated to forgive? Why is the Bar Kamtza story more an example of Sinas Chinam and concealed hatred then any of the other stories of cruelty and machlokes in that time? One of the most thought out shiurim I have prepared so far. It was a lot of material, so I split it into two clips. I think it's essential to think about, and I hope you find it meaningful. Thanks to all the people who helped with fleshing out this material, including Rabbi Yehuda Shmuelevitz, Rabbi Natan Lindell, Maor, Daniel, Dovid Tzvi, and the Kamin Kiddush Chaburah. Hope you have a meaningful fast. May we be zoche to the Binyan Hamikdash with the Bias Goel Tzedek Bimheirah Biyameinu Amen. What is Sinas Chinam? Does anyone actually hate another person baselessly, for ZERO reason at all? On a separate note, Chazal teach that due to the story of Kamtza U'Bar Kamtza, Yerushalayim was destroyed. Do they mean to say that Yerushalayim was destroyed based on a pure fluke misunderstanding?

NOTE: Apologies for the late release. This time, massive machine error, in a complicated way. Hopefully now resolved... A new mishnah - a deaf-mute woman who was married off by her father when she was a minor... Can she get divorced? What happens with regard to terumah? Plus, a beam is stolen and used in the construction of a building... Which leads us to Takanat HaShavim - people can pay money rather than destroy the construction. Also, Takanat HaMizbeah. Plus, a sin-offering obtained by theft doesn't work... Also, the Sikrikon... a non-Jew who obtained Jewish lands... when does that kind of sale work? The order of operations may well make a difference. Plus, and perhaps most importantly, the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, whose story is emblematic of baseless hatred. Plus, some extra discussion.
The timing perhaps could not be better as we begin the story of Kamtza U'Bar Kamtza during the 3 Weeks. The Gemara begins the infamous story while Darshaning (expounding on) an innocent Pasuk in Mishlei. This Pasuk might actually be the secret solution to generations of suffering and exile.

Shiur given by Rabbi Bezalel Rudinsky on the Sugyos Hachurban-Kamtza And Bar Kamtza on Tisha BAv. Shiur given in Kahal Ahavas Yitzchok, Monsey NY.
The challenge of Tisha B'Av is that we are being called upon to feel the pain of the loss of the Beis HaMikdash when we have never experienced the Beis HaMikdash. What we can feel is the pain of the shechina who longs to have a place in our world once again. Feeling the pain of another requires a strong sense of self which can only come from tapping in to the Godly soul that dwells within each of us. In this shiur, delivered at NCSY Kollel on Tisha B'Av, Rav Burg takes us through three stories, the story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, the story of Tur Malka, and the story of Beitar, amd shows how in each of these stories a lack of self expressed itself in the lack of feeling for another.

This morning we discuss a new approach from Rabbi Yochanan Zweig to the classic story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza, on whose account, the Talmud tells us, Jerusalem was destroyed. A close analysis leads to a surprising and very relevant character flaw we often see around us, and which we must reject. The emperor sends a general to destroy Jerusalem, but this general - Nero - has a sudden realization, and turns his life around. Shouldn't we follow suit?
I rerecorded the second half of episode 2 because I realized I was perpetuating my own negative assumptions about the Jewish people. Around 10 minutes in, I took a deep breath and started again toward a recognition of how big some moments are, and wondering what it takes to face them.
Having been kicked out of the party while the rabbis did nothing, Bar Kamtza goes to the emperor and tells him the Jews are rebelling. He suggests a test - send an offering to the Temple, they won't bring it! - to show that what I am saying is true. He blemishes the animal, rendering it unfit for offering, and presenting the rabbis with an enormous challenge
What should Rabbi Zecharia and his friends have done? Well, we see places in our tradition in which leaders figured out when and how to step out of the black and white text. But are they good precedents? Do they, in fact, have something that these rabbis don't have?
There is an incredible story in the Talmud about a party that leads to the destruction of the Temple. It offers ample food for thought about over-responding and under-responding, about response-ability and courage, about money and food, honor and shame. It's got a bit of everything.

How often do we act as judge, jury and executioner? (Including whether the author of this podcast has given the correct spelling - judgment or judgement?) How often do we condemn colleagues, friends/former friends, bosses, leaders...and the list goes on. And when our chidren complain about someone else, we jump on the 'That's Loshon Hora' bandwagon, even when they are justified in telling us something. But we are righteously indignant...or are trying to find the easy road out... But where did they learn it from? Is it do as I say? Or do as I do? The story of Kamtza and Bar Kamtza is multi-faceted. Today, I would like to focus on the aspect of the portrayed 'innocent party' and how we might have a wolf in sheep's clothing over here. I will use the motif of the cloud - darkening the skies, yet giving the rain; hiding the light, yet protecting us in the desert. How accurate are our perceptions of people, situations and events? And what happens when the truth is laid bare? This is the tip of the iceberg that leads to the catastrophe that is Tisha B'Av.

I accept that each persons life span is set before they are born. I also accept that the question is visited on Rosh Hashanah when Hashem decides who will live and who will die. All that is fine and well, until I pick up a gun and say to myself, cant I decide to end that persons life? Isnt it obvious that whether that person will live or die is now in my hands? Using the Tisha BAv Gemarah as a backdrop we are brought into some of philosophys deepest questions: resolving the issue of how much of life is in HASHEMs control, and how much is in mans.
