Welcome to Daily Bitachon. We are now winding down Sha'ar HaBechina [The Gate of Reflection], looking at how we realize Hashem created the world, commit to serving Him, and ultimately learn to rely on Him. But never forget that the little bit we see with our physical eyes is just a fraction of reality; there is a much larger picture out there. The Zohar tells us about the existence of entirely different spiritual worlds. We have God's Kissei HaKavod —the Throne of Glory, so to speak—where we perceive His absolute control over the cosmos. Then we have the world of the angels, Olam HaMalachim , where the various holy hosts reside. Among them are angels who do nothing but constantly declare, " Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh ." The Zohar explains that from sunrise to sunset, they are continuously saying " Kadosh ," and from the moment the sun sets until it rises again, they say " Baruch kevod... " There are massive angelic forces up there constantly praising Hashem's Name! Yet, as great and powerful as these angels are, the Gemara in Tractate Chullin (91b) drops that unbelievable line: אין מלאכי השרת אוֹמְרִים שִׁירָה לְמַעְלָה עַד שֶׁיֹּאמְרוּ יִשְׂרָאֵל לְמַטָּה "The ministering angels do not sing praise above until Israel sings below on earth." The angels cannot say Kedushah above until we, the Jewish people, initiate it down here. Think back to our mashal [parable] of the king: with all of his vast empire, the king right now is focused entirely on this one sweet bird. We are Hashem's children, and our voices are sweet to Him. As the verse says, " Hashmi'eni et kolech "—"Let Me hear your voice." If God is literally waiting to hear our voices before listening to the angels, and He has the boundless ability to feed all of those massive heavenly hosts, shouldn't we realize that we can completely rely on Him? The beauty of it is that this exact lesson is built right into our daily prayers. Everything is inside our tefillah . Rav Shlomo Wolbe once said that all the core fundamentals of Judaism are hidden right in our Siddur; we just have to open our eyes and find them. Take a look at how it flows. We start off the blessings before the morning Shema with the words: " Yotzer or u'vorei choshech "—"Who fashions light and creates darkness." We begin by talking about the physical universe and the orbital luminaries. But then, right in the middle of discussing the sun and the moon, we suddenly switch gears. We begin describing God as the Borei Kedoshim —the Fashioner of holy ministering servants. We launch into a breathtaking description of what these angels do: they stand at the summit of the universe and proclaim with awe, together loudly, the words of the living God and King of the universe. We describe them as beloved, flawless, mighty, and holy. They perform the will of their Maker with dread and reverence. They open their mouths in holiness, purity, and song, and they bless, praise, glorify, sanctify, revere, and declare the kingship of Hashem, the great, mighty, and awesome King. The prayer goes on to describe how they accept upon themselves the yoke of heavenly sovereignty from one another, granting permission to each other to sanctify the One who formed them. With tranquility, with clear articulation, and with sweetness, they all proclaim His holiness as one, saying with awe: " Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh... " Then the Ofanim and the Chayot HaKodesh respond with a thunderous noise: " Baruch kevod Hashem mi'mekomo "—"Blessed is the glory of Hashem from His place." Then, right after this intense depiction of the angelic choir, the Siddur switches gears back to the physical universe, concluding the blessing with: " Baruch Ata Hashem, yotzer ha'me'orot "—"Blessed are You Hashem, Creator of the luminaries." Did you ever notice that question? What in the world are angels doing right in the middle of a discussion about the sun, the moon, and the stars? It's a classic question. I was once told an answer in the name of Rabbi Eliyahu Lopian (which he passed on to Rav Wolbe): Hashem is telling us, "Let's learn from the angels." Look at how the angels proclaim God's kingship, and let's emulate them. In fact, there is a custom brought down by the Ben Ish Chai in the name of the great Ashkenazi Kabbalist, Rabbi Nathan Shapira of Krakow. He notes that before we step back and take our three steps forward for the Amidah , we give a slight nod of greeting to those around us. Why? To show signs of peace and friendship to each other, just like the angels do before they praise God. We want to act angelic as we approach prayer. We even hold our feet tightly together during the Amidah to emulate them. Before you emulate the angels, you have to see what they are about. They accept God's kingdom with love and harmony among themselves. That means we have to get along and be unified before we declare Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokeinu Hashem Echad . But there is a second answer to our question, based on the teachings of the Chafetz Chaim. When you talk about the creation of the world—about the sun and the moon—you might think that's the entire story. You look out with your physical eyes and think, "Okay, this is the extent of God's power." And then, if you look at this physical world and see havoc, chaos, and a world running completely wild, you panic and ask, "How can I rely on Him to fix this?" So the Siddur tells us to take a step back. Hold on. You see the sun and the moon? That is not the whole story. The reality is vastly greater. There are layers of angels up there praising God, who see the inner gears of the universe. And for all their immense greatness, they can't utter a single sound until we respond down here. Are you actually worried that the King can't take care of you? Look at how holy and significant we are. All of creation needs sustenance, and God sustains the angels too. The only difference is that we eat physical food and they eat spiritual food. But make no mistake: angels need nourishment. They don't just live on thin air. Nothing exists independently on its own strength except for God. The Tomer Devorah discusses this at length. Every time we do a mitzvah , we create a holy angel. If a person commits an aveira [sin], chas v'shalom , they create a destructive angel. Those angels require spiritual energy to survive. What do they "eat"? They live on the energy of our actions. And what did we eat when we were elevated? We ate the food of angels! How do we know this? King David writes in Tehillim (78:25): " Lechem abirim achal ish "—"Man ate the bread of the mighty ones." Tractate Yoma (75b) explicitly explains that this means the Jewish people literally ate the food of the ministering angels—the Manna—while traveling through the desert. In the wilderness, Hashem treated us exactly like He treats the angels. We didn't need coarse, physical food; we survived on pure spiritual light. Rabbi Eliyahu de Vidas writes in his classic work, Reshit Chochma ( Sha'ar HaKedushah , Chapter 15), that even today, there are elite talmidei chachamim [Torah scholars] who can live primarily on spiritual energy. He explains that this is why certain sages could go two or three days without eating a single thing—because the mazon haTorah (the spiritual nourishment of the Torah itself) kept them physically full. That is how Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son survived in the cave for thirteen years. This brings us right back to the incredible historical account recorded by Rabbi Yisrael of Shklov in his introduction to Pe'at HaShulchan . He describes his master, the Vilna Gaon, and how radically little he ate. The Gaon ate only two tiny meals a day, taking a piece of dry bread no larger than a kezayit [the size of an olive], dipping it in water, and consuming it. That was it! And yet, Rabbi Yisrael records that the Gaon remained physically strong, resilient, and robust. Where did that physical strength come from? It came from the literal application of the verse: "Man does not live by bread alone, but by all that comes from the mouth of Hashem." The Torah itself became his physical fuel. Great tzaddikim tapped directly into that spiritual nourishment, which proves that God can sustain a person in the most wondrous, supernatural ways whenever He wills it. When you think about these concepts—about the sheer scale of God's power and His intimate love for us—how can you not place your ultimate trust in Him? With this profound realization, we officially conclude Sha'ar HaBechina and read the final, beautiful words of the Chovos HaLevavos : והאלהים ישימנו מאנשי עבודתו "May God place us among those who serve Him," המכירים עניני טובתו ברחמיו ובחסדיו אמן "who recognize the matters of His goodness, through His mercy and His kindness. Amen." נשלם השער השני — The second gate is now complete. אל אדני אקרא ויענני — "To Hashem I shall call out, and He will answer me." We see from here that when a person truly identifies God within creation, they are fully prepared to call out and be answered. That recognition is the ultimate runway for our daily Amidah . Now that we have journeyed through Sha'ar HaBechina , stop for a moment, absorb the greatness, and make that prayer. Mabruk and a massive Mazal Tov to all of us on completing this incredible journey of over 100 classes!

7 takeaways from this study Guard your heart more than your habits.External practices (like handwashing traditions) matter less than the thoughts, desires, and attitudes that flow from the heart (Mark 7:20–23). Focus on inner transformation, not just outward conformity. Use God's distinctions as training, not as weapons. The categories of kadosh/chol (holy/common) and tahor/tame (clean/unclean) are meant to train discernment, not to create pride or contempt. Let them teach you to ask, “Is this moving me toward God's presence or away from it?” Pay attention to what you allow into your life.Just as Israel learned daily through food choices (Leviticus 11), examine your inputs—media, relationships, habits. Ask whether they help or hinder your ability to draw near to God. Do not call unclean what God is cleansing.Peter's lesson in Acts 10–11 warns against writing people off. Someone who looks far from God may be a “foreigner” He is already drawing. Be slow to label; be quick to watch for the Spirit's work. Let Scripture sit above tradition.Traditions can be helpful, but when they contradict or overshadow God's commands, they must yield (Mark 7:8–13). Regularly test your religious habits and assumptions against the Word. See the mission: you are meant to be a magnet.Like the Temple in 1 Kings 8, your life and community should draw others toward God's presence, not push them away. Ask whether your tone, conduct, and priorities make Him attractive or seem common. Expect God to redeem even deep failure.Solomon's decline and possible later repentance, Saul's transformation, and former enemies turned witnesses all point to hope. Pray for those who oppose you and for your own blind spots, trusting God to bring good out of evil. How Scripture defines “holy” and “common,” “clean” and “unclean,” connects to the calling of Israel and the inclusion of people from all nations into the Kingdom. Torah's purity laws teach spiritual discernment. Yeshua's teaching in Mark 7 and the vision of Acts 10 do not abolish God's standard of that discernment. Instead, they clarify the true source of defilement and the scope of God's invitation. Solomon's dedication prayer and a ‘Declaration of Dependence’ Solomon's prayer at the dedication of the Temple in 1Kings 8 marks a transition from a movable Tabernacle to a permanent House of the LORD. Israel’s dwelling place for the Most High moves from a tent in Shiloh to a private home to a fixed sanctuary in Jerusalem. Solomon's prayer is sort of a “declaration of dependence” on God, parallel to the U.S. Declaration of Independence that set out the reason for the nation’s being. “That He may maintain the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel, as each day requires, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no one else. Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the LORD our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as at this day.” 1Kings 8:59–61 NASB95 Israel exists so that “all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God.” The people rejoice at the dedication, offering many sacrifices and extending the Feast of Booths (Sukkot) in celebration. Their joy reflects relief after earlier sins, such as the golden calf (Exodus 32) and idolatry at Shiloh that led to its destruction (1Samuel 3:10–18). God has shown mercy. He has chosen again to dwell among them. Solomon's rise and decline Solomon's early and late life are contrasts. Early on, he seeks wisdom (1Kings 3:9–12). God grants him wisdom and honor. His fame spreads. Nations visit him. Later, Solomon multiplies wives and concubines. He builds high places and participates in idolatrous worship (1Kings 11:1–8). The Torah had warned kings not to multiply wives, horses, or gold (Deuteronomy 17:16–17). Solomon breaks all the cautions. His heart grows divided. Some connect this decline with the tone of the book of Qohelet (Ecclesiastes). The book speaks of “vanity” or “futility” (הֶבֶל hevel, vapor). It describes many pursuits as empty. It closes with a simple conclusion: The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. Ecclesiastes 12:13 NASB95 This arc illustrates a warning. One can begin with zeal and end in compromise. Solomon's story as a mirror. It urges self-examination regarding distraction, divided affections, and misplaced trust. The Temple as a magnet for the nations Solomon's prayer also reveals God's global purpose. The Temple is not only for Israel. It functions as a magnet for the nations. Solomon prays specifically about foreigners: “Also concerning the foreigner who is not of Your people Israel, when he comes from a far country for Your name's sake (for they will hear of Your great name and Your mighty hand and of Your outstretched arm); when he comes and prays toward this house, hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, in order that all the peoples of the earth may know Your name, to fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this house which I have built is called by Your name.” 1Kings 8:41–43 NASB 1995 Here the Temple becomes a global focal point. Nations hear of God's “great name” and “mighty hand.” They come seeking Him. The prayer asks God to answer them. The result should be that all peoples know His name and fear Him. This aligns with the calling of Abraham. God promises that in Abraham “all the families of the earth will be blessed” (Genesis 12:3 NASB 1995). Israel and its Temple exist as instruments of this wider mission. Types of foreigners One common Hebrew word for foreigner is גֵּר ger (resident alien/sojourner). Another word in some contexts is נָכְרִי nokhrí (foreigner/stranger). The root נכר, n-k-r, can mean “to recognize” or “to inspect.” This nuance suggests that some “foreigners” are not random passersby. They are people whom God “takes notice of.” They draw near because they have heard of God's reputation. They seek Him. God inspects them, in a positive sense. Therefore, commands not to oppress “the widow, the orphan, and the ger” carry weight (e.g., Deuteronomy 10:18–19). Israel must not push away those whom God is drawing near (Acts 15:10). If God is calling, His people must not block the path. The spectrum of holy and common Here is a key lesson from the judgment on priests Nadab and Abihu, and a prelude to the food laws in the following chapter: “…and so as to make a distinction between the holy and the profane, and between the unclean and the clean” Leviticus 10:10 NASB95 Here we see a pair of axes: קָדוֹשׁ kadosh (holy, set apart) חֹל chol/khol (common, profane) and inside that: טָהוֹר tahor (“clean,” fit to approach) טָמֵא tamé (“unclean,” unfit to approach) Kadosh marks what God sets apart for Himself. Khol is ordinary, not specially dedicated. Tahor refers to a state that permits approach to God's presence. Tamé describes a state that temporarily prevents such approach. Tamé does not always mean “sinful.” Many causes of “uncleanness” arise from normal life events, such as childbirth or certain of men’s and women’s bodily discharges (Leviticus 12; 15). People move between tahor and tame states over time. Sin appears more at the extreme of khol. To move away from God's purposes toward what is merely common or even idolatrous reflects moral failure. The purity system trains people to discern movements along this spectrum which may happen too gradually to be perceived. Offerings and the journey toward God Leviticus 1–7 describes various offerings in the Tabernacle. The generic term is קָרְבָּן, qorbán (offering). It derives from the root קרב, karav (to come near/approach). Each offering type pictures some dimension of drawing near to God. The burnt offering (עֹלָה olah, that which goes up) expresses total surrender (Leviticus 1). The grain offering (מִנְחָה minkha) communicates thankfulness for all Heaven provides. The חַטָּאת chatat (sin offering) and אָשָׁם, asham (guilt offering) address the move away from God’s standards and liability for doing so, intentional or not (Leviticus 4–5). The שְׁלָמִים shelamim (peace/fellowship offerings) celebrates restored relationship after confession and restitution (Leviticus 3; 7:11–21). Priests must follow instructions precisely. The death of Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, in Leviticus 10:1–2, shows the seriousness. Their “unauthorized fire” brings judgment. Moses then explains that priests must learn to distinguish and to teach these distinctions (Leviticus 10:8–11). This system as a long-term lesson. It trains Israel to understand approach to God, the cost of sin, and the joy of reconciliation. Leviticus 11: Food for life Leviticus 11 applies this logic to food. It lists animals that Israel may eat and those it must not eat. The categories mark some animals as טָהוֹר tahor (clean/fit), and others as טָמֵא tame (unclean/unfit). People can have limited control over many causes of uncleanness. Yet they do control what they eat. Thus, food becomes a daily training tool. By abstaining from certain creatures, Israel “fasts” from a category associated with death, predation or impurity. The chapter concludes with the purpose for these laws: “For I am the LORD your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. And you shall not make yourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth. For I am the LORD who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; thus you shall be holy, for I am holy.” Leviticus 11:45 NASB95 Here God links food laws to His own holiness and to the exodus. He rescued Israel from bondage. He now calls them to be distinct. Mark 7: What did Yeshua declare clean? Mark 7 records a dispute over handwashing. Some Pharisees and scribes criticize Yeshua's disciples for eating without following the “tradition of the elders” (Mark 7:1–5). The tradition views the marketplace as a source of ritual contamination, defiling food that would be considered “clean” per Leviticus 11. Therefore, one must wash upon returning. Yeshua responds by quoting Isaiah 29:13: “’This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far away from Me. But in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’” Mark 7:6–7 NASB95 He accuses them of “neglecting the commandment of God” and holding to human tradition (Mark 7:8–13). He then states: “There is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man.” Mark 7:15 NASB95 Later He explains to His disciples: “That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, fornications, thefts, murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting and wickedness, as well as deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness. All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.” Mark 7:20–23 NASB95 First, Yeshua addresses ritual handwashing traditions, not the Torah's food distinctions in Leviticus 11. Second, He identifies the heart as the primary source of defilement. Third, He challenges a system that can label what God calls clean as unclean, simply due to contact with others. The statement about food passing into the stomach and out “into the latrine” (Mark 7:19) highlights the temporary nature of external intake. In contrast, corrupt thoughts and desires lodge in the heart and shape behavior. The issue is spiritual hygiene, not mere external contact. Acts 10 and Peter's vision Peter’s vision of a sheet descending from heaven (Acts 10) helps bring together the lesson of the food laws and the prophecies of a bigger tent for Israel. This passage also is pointed to along with Mark 7 by commentators who say the food laws are obsolete post-resurrection. The sheet in the vision contains “all kinds of four-footed animals and crawling creatures of the earth and birds of the air” (Acts 10:12 NASB95). A voice says, “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!” (Acts 10:13 NASB95). Peter objects, saying he has never eaten anything “unholy” (κοινός koinós, literally, “common”) or “unclean” (ἀκάθαρτος akáthartos) (Acts 10:14; cp. Ezekiel 4:14, context Ezekiel 4:9–17). These Greek terms are how the Septuagint (LXX) translates חֹל khol (common, profane) and טָמֵא tamé (“unclean,” unfit to approach). The voice replies: “What God has cleansed (καθαρίζω katharı́zō), no longer consider unholy (koinós).” Acts 10:15 NASB95 In other words, what God has made tahor (fit to approach His presence), no longer consider far off from God. Soon after the vision, men from Cornelius, a Gentile centurion, arrive. The Spirit directs Peter to go with them “without misgivings” (Acts 10:20 NASB95). When Peter enters Cornelius's house, he explains the true meaning of the vision: “You yourselves know how unlawful it is for a man who is a Jew to associate with a foreigner or to visit him; and yet God has shown me that I should not call any man unholy or unclean.” Acts 10:28 NASB95 God has cleansed Gentiles who fear Him and seek Him. Put into the lesson of Leviticus 11, Heaven no longer sees a Gentile called-out believer as a tamé pig or bat but as a tahor bovine or chicken, because the Gentile has responded to Heaven’s call to come into the Kingdom. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Cornelius and his household confirms this (Acts 10:44–48). Peter’s comment about associating with or visiting foreigners came to a head years later, as recorded by apostle Paul in Galatians 2. What’s behind Peter’s willingness to eat with Gentile believers in one case in Galatia but not when certain Jewish believers visited from Jerusalem is reflected in rabbinical disagreements over both practices in the centuries that followed. But at the Jewish table of the 1st Century, all of the laws (both those well confirmed as well as those emerging within the rabbinic debates) governing purities came into play as well. These involved the separation of clean and unclean animals, the laws of ritual slaughter to assure that the blood had been properly disposed of, and a separation from all things tainted by the common idolatry of the pagan society in which Israel lived. Taken together, these concerns gave plenty of motivation for “building fences,” the most obvious being avoiding the Gentiles all together. In this sense, remaining separate from the Gentiles was more a conscious effort to maintain the purity laws than it was to uphold any prejudiced view against non-Jews. What is more, at a time when national identity was being threatened by Hellenism in general, it is understandable how purity laws and the food laws that went along with them became identity markers for the Jewish community. Tim Hegg, Galatians Commentary, TorahResource, 2002, 2010. p. 62. The vision addresses social and ceremonial barriers between Jews and Gentiles, not the abolition of all food distinctions. The main point is that God now reveals clearly that people from the nations may be brought near on the same basis of faith and obedience. Tradition, discernment, and the Spirit's work The events of Acts 10 lead to debate in Acts 11 and the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15. Some argue that Gentile believers must fully convert to the Judaisms of the day, and circumcision was a key marker of that shift. Others observe that God has already given these Gentiles the Holy Spirit. The council concludes that Gentiles should not be “troubled” with an additional yoke of circumcision before acceptance into God’s covenant (Acts 15:19–20). They must, however, abstain from idolatry, sexual immorality, and blood as the new believer learns God’s ways each Shabbat (Sabbath, Acts 15:21). These basic requirements align with core Torah principles (Leviticus 18–19). For established believers, the key issue is discernment. When God moves, His people must recognize it. They must avoid calling His work “unclean” (because it’s outside our traditions or extrabiblical expectations) or attributing those works to the Adversary (Matthew 9:34; 12:24; Acts 5:27-39). They must not let protective traditions — as praiseworthy as they might be — override God's revealed purpose. Internal purity and love for the nations Yeshua's list of defiling things in one’s heart in Mark 7:21–23 mirrors lists of “works of the flesh” in passages like Galatians 5:19–21. These outcomes reveal the state of the heart. In contrast, the “fruit of the Spirit” reflects a heart transformed by God (Galatians 5:22–23). The purity system of Torah, the Temple worship, and Yeshua's teaching together point toward a central goal. God wants a people who are set apart in heart and conduct — inside and outside. He wants them to reflect His character among the nations. He wants them to welcome those He calls, whether from Israel or from the Gentiles. Therefore, Yeshua warns against judging others by outward appearance or current condition only (John 7:24; Leviticus 19:15; Isaiah 11:3; Zechariah 7:9). A persecutor like Saul of Tarsus can become a devoted emissary (Acts 9:1–22). A former enemy can become a powerful witness. Believers should pray for their enemies, as Yeshua commands (Matthew 5:44). They should remain open to God's surprising grace. Heart of the matter Leviticus 9–11 teaches distinctions between holy and common, clean and unclean. 1Kings 8 shows that the Temple stands as a beacon to all nations. Mark 7 reveals that true defilement arises from the heart, not merely from external contact or neglected traditions. Acts 10–15 confirms that God cleanses people from the nations and brings them near through faith and the work of the Spirit. The categories of kadosh (holy) and khol (common), and of tahor (clean) and tamé (unclean), remain essential lesson-practices. They call God's people to continually examine what they bring into their lives. They also call us to recognize whom God is drawing near. The ultimate aim is that “all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God; there is no one else” (1Kings 8:60 NASB95). Sunday January 25th, 2026: During a winter freeze that kept us home and off campus, Pastor Matt went into his office and shared a special teaching session rooted in the ongoing Kadosh series. This message is not about striving harder, proving devotion, or building spiritual maturity through effort. It is an invitation to see transformation differently, not as self-improvement, but as discovery.Drawing from Scripture and the story of the widow at the gate in 1 Kings 17, this teaching explores how God often meets us in the ordinary rhythms of faithfulness, quiet obedience, and daily communion. Holiness is reframed not as separation from life, but as nearness to God. Not pressure, but presence. Not performance, but participation flowing from belonging.

Sunday January 11, 2026: What if consecration was never about striving, separation, or self-improvement?In this message, we stand with Israel at the edge of the Jordan and revisit the word kadosh not as religious withdrawal, but as relational nearness. Before the waters part. Before the miracle. Before anything changes outwardly, God invites His people to reorient their hearts toward Him.This teaching reframes holiness as fascination, not avoidance, and consecration as posture, not performance. Drawing from Joshua 3 and fulfilled in the life and words of Jesus, we discover that wonders are not the goal of intimacy, but the fruit of union. This is an invitation to slow down, to cling again, and to allow nearness to become the place where trust, obedience, and joy naturally flow.

Sunday January 18, 2026: If clinging is the invitation, how does transformation actually happen? In Part 2 of Kadosh, we turn to the apostle Paul to understand how holiness unfolds without slipping back into effort, shame, or religious pressure. Paul doesn't define sanctification as self-improvement, but as awakening to what is already true in Christ.Through scriptures in Romans, Colossians, Corinthians, and Galatians, this teaching explores how transformation flows from union, how the mind follows the gaze, and why freedom increases when fascination is restored. Sin loses its power when it loses its audience, and holiness grows best in the soil of affection. This message is a pastoral, grounding invitation to let go of striving and allow beholding to do the work. Not trying harder, but seeing clearer. Not fixing yourself, but agreeing with the God who is already holding you.

Each morning before Baruch She'amar, the congregation stands and the Hazan declares, "Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch Le'olam Va'ed" – "Hashem is King, Hashem was King, Hashem will be King for all eternity." The congregation then repeats this proclamation after the Hazan. Our custom is to make this proclamation twice. There is an opinion that a Minyan is required for pronouncing "Hashem Melech," but the accepted view is that this may be said even without a Minyan, and so if ten men have yet to arrive by this point, "Hashem Melech" may nevertheless be recited. Some communities have the practice that a child leads the congregation in reciting "Hashem Melech." It would seem, however, that it is more proper to choose someone who is at least Bar-Misva age to lead this proclamation. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) brings a custom to lift one's feet when reciting "Hashem Melech," like we do when reciting "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh." This symbolizes the "elevation" that we experience through this recitation, as we make our way toward the higher realms until we reach the highest level in the heavens so we can recite the Amida directly in Hashem's presence. One who follows this custom must ensure to do so in a discreet, unassuming manner, and not in a way that draws attention to himself. The Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria, Safed, 1534-1572) taught that the pronouncement of "Hashem Melech" is associated with our quest to neutralize the 280 "Kelipot," or negative energies, that threaten us. These 280 forces are alluded to in the names of the five letters of the Hebrew alphabet that are changed when they appear at the end of a word: Mem, Nun, Sadi, Peh, Kaf (represented by the acrostic "Mansapach"). The combined numerical value of these letters is 280. When we succeed in "subjugating" these 280 forces, the Arizal taught, Mashiah will come. In the proclamation of "Hashem Melech," the words "Melech" and "Malach" both have the Gematria of 90, and the word "Yimloch" equals 100 – for a total of 280, thus alluding to the "Kelipot." The Name of "Havaya" is mentioned three times in this proclamation ("Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch"), and in Gematria it equals 26, for a total of 78 (26 * 3). Adding this to 280, we arrive at a total of 358 – the Gematria of "Mashiah" (40+300+10+8). This daily proclamation, then, is a crucial part of our effort to overcome the harmful spiritual forces in the world so that we will become worthy of the arrival of Mashiah.

Should One Always Wrap the Tefillin Strap Eight Times, or Can It Be Skipped to Avoid Missing Kaddish or Kedusha? One of the beautiful customs in donning the Tefillin Shel Yad is to wrap the strap around the forearm eight times before proceeding to the Tefillin Shel Rosh. This is the widely accepted Sephardic custom , as taught by the Ben Ish Hai (Parashat Vayera, Halacha 11) and based on Kabbalistic sources . Each of the eight windings corresponds to a spiritual level or sefirah and reflects the binding of one's physical strength and actions to the service of Hashem. Though some Ashkenazim follow the custom of wrapping seven times , for Sephardim — particularly those who follow the teachings of the Mekubalim — eight wraps is the standard. This practice is not just symbolic; it is seen as an integral part of the proper fulfillment of the Misva. The Spiritual Meaning of the Eight Wraps The number eight signifies that which is above nature — transcending the seven-day cycle of creation. According to the Mekubalim, these eight coils spiritually bind the Tefillin Shel Yad to one's heart, representing full control over emotions and desires. It connects the physical arm to a higher spiritual purpose. The wraps are to be done after tightening the Shel Yad on the biceps , and the strap should go down the arm in smooth, evenly spaced coils. The eight wraps help secure the Tefillin in place while also fulfilling this deeper mystical layer. The Ben Ish Hai and Kaf Ha'Haim both warn against neglecting this practice, especially for those who follow Kabbalistic customs. This is the dominant opinion among Sephardic Poskim, including Maran Ha'Hida and Rav Ben Sion Abba Shaul . The Halachic Dilemma: Missing Kaddish or Kedusha A common scenario: A person begins wrapping the Tefillin Shel Yad and realizes the Hazan is about to begin Kaddish or Kedusha . If he performs all eight wraps, he may miss the opportunity to respond to "Yehe Shemeh Rabba" or "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh." Can he shorten or delay the wraps? This situation creates a halachic and spiritual tension : Should one preserve the integrity of the Tefillin placement and do all eight wraps? Or should he interrupt or shorten the process to participate in a communal declaration of Hashem's greatness? The Kabbalistic View: Never Skip the Wraps The Mekubalim are clear: Do not skip the eight wraps , even if it means missing Kaddish or Kedusha. Rav Eliyahu Mani , one of the great Mekubalim of Hebron and a teacher of the Ben Ish Hai , ruled that these eight wraps are an inseparable part of the Misva . To skip them—even temporarily—compromises the spiritual completeness of the Tefillin. According to this view, Kaddish and Kedusha are important, but not at the expense of properly fulfilling a Torah-level obligation with its spiritual intentions intact. The Ben Ish Hai heavily relies on Rabbi Mani for rulings in matters of Kabbalah, making this a binding view for Sephardim who follow the Mekubalim. The Practical View: Skip Temporarily If Necessary Some Halachic authorities take a more practical approach , especially in situations where missing Kaddish or Kedusha would result in a spiritual or emotional loss. According to this view: One may put on the Shel Yad, do one or two wraps to hold it in place, Then place the Shel Rosh, And return to complete the remaining wraps afterward . This opinion appears in Mishna Berura (O.H. 25:16) and is cited by various contemporary Poskim who aim to accommodate modern prayer timing challenges. For Sephardim, however, this approach is only a last resort , and only when all of the following conditions are met: The Tefillin Shel Yad is securely in place , even with only partial wrapping. The person intends to return and complete the wraps immediately after Shel Rosh. The person is responding to Kaddish, Kedusha, or Barchu , not idle speech or distraction. Even then, some Mekubalim object to this entirely and say one should miss Kaddish rather than compromise the Misva's structure. Anticipating the Situation: The Best Option The best practice is to plan ahead : If you know Kaddish or Kedusha is about to begin, wait a few moments before starting the Tefillin process. If you're already mid-Tefillin, continue properly and listen quietly (without verbal response) if you must. Summary: Sephardic custom is to wrap the Tefillin strap eight times around the forearm, based on Kabbalistic sources. These wraps are spiritually and halachically significant , and should not be skipped , even to answer Kaddish or Kedusha. In urgent situations, one may wrap partially , place the Shel Rosh, and return to complete the wraps —but this is only under pressing circumstances and with intention to fix the order. Best practice: Anticipate upcoming parts of tefillah and plan Tefillin placement accordingly to avoid halachic compromise.

Can One Respond to Amen, Kaddish, or Kedusha While Putting on Tefillin—And What If He Already Did?

Can One Respond to Amen, Kaddish, or Kedusha While Putting on Tefillin—And What If He Already Did? One of the most common halachic dilemmas in the morning prayer is what to do when someone is putting on Tefillin and hears Kaddish , Kedusha , or a Beracha . Can he respond out loud? Should he listen silently? Or must he remain completely passive until finishing the Tefillin? This question centers on the concern of interrupting between the Tefillin Shel Yad and the Tefillin Shel Rosh . As discussed earlier, any Hefsek (interruption) between the two parts of the Misva may require repeating the Beracha . The situation becomes more complicated when the interruption is not mundane speech but a holy response , such as saying "Amen" or "Yehe Shemeh Rabba." The Strict View: No Interruptions, Even for Holy Words Maran in Shulhan Aruch (O.H. 25:9) rules that one may not speak at all between the Tefillin Shel Yad and Shel Rosh—even to respond "Amen" or to say "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh." This is the view of the Rosh , cited in the Mordechi , who maintains that these responses still count as interruptions because the person has already started one Misva and must complete it without pause. Following this view, one should not respond to Kaddish or Kedusha between the two Tefillin. Even though these responses are important, the Misva of Tefillin is in progress and must not be interrupted. The Ben Ish Hai (Parashat Vayera, Halacha 8) agrees and writes that although it is painful to miss answering Kedusha, it is more important to complete the Tefillin properly. He explains that the person should simply pause silently , listen attentively, and intend to fulfill the Misva through listening ( Shome'a Ke'Oneh ). This ruling is widely accepted by Sephardic authorities , including Hacham Ovadia Yosef ( Yabia Omer vol. 1 and Halichot Olam ). A Middle Opinion: Listen Without Answering According to the middle-ground opinion, a person who hears Kaddish or Kedusha while wrapping Tefillin should stop what he's doing , listen silently, and fulfill the obligation through listening alone . This is based on the rule of Shome'a Ke'Oneh — "the listener is as one who recites." However, some Aharonim raise a concern: If listening is equivalent to speaking, then isn't that also an interruption? Not necessarily. The logic is that Shome'a Ke'Oneh does not require active speech , and therefore it does not violate the condition of silence between the Tefillin Shel Yad and Shel Rosh. This is the approach of the Magen Avraham and is mentioned by the Hida in Birkei Yosef . It is considered the ideal practice when caught in this situation: stop, listen quietly, and do not speak . Still, this only works if the person saying Kaddish or the Beracha has proper intent to fulfill others' obligation. If he's just reciting the words by rote and not thinking about others listening, Shome'a Ke'Oneh might not apply—especially for a Tefillah like Kaddish, where communal intent is crucial. Therefore, Maran Ha'Hida and later Hacham Ben Sion Abba Shaul note that if one is unsure whether the Hazan is a learned person with kavana, it's better not to stop to listen , and just continue putting on the Tefillin. The Lenient View: If You Answered, You're Still Covered What if someone did answer "Amen," "Yehe Shemeh Rabba," or another phrase during the Tefillin process? According to most Sephardic authorities, although one should not have answered, if he did, he does not repeat the Beracha . This follows the principle of Safek Berachot Le'hakel —when there is doubt about whether a Beracha must be repeated, we err on the side of caution and do not say Hashem's name again unnecessarily. This view is stated clearly by the Ben Ish Hai and Kaf Ha'Haim , and is upheld by Hacham Ovadia Yosef. Even though answering was improper, the holiness of the response and the minimal nature of the interruption make it insufficient to require a new Beracha. However, some Ashkenazic authorities (such as the Mishna Berura citing the Eliyahu Rabba ) are stricter. They hold that if one answered anything between the Tefillin Shel Yad and Shel Rosh, he must repeat the Beracha for the Shel Rosh. Sephardim do not follow this opinion . Best Practice: Anticipate and Avoid the Situation If a person sees that Kaddish or Kedusha is about to begin , and he hasn't started donning Tefillin yet, he should wait a moment and delay putting them on. It is better to fulfill both Misvot properly —answering Kaddish and wrapping Tefillin—than to get caught between them and risk an interruption. If he's already started wrapping the Shel Yad, he should proceed without interruption and miss answering Kaddish if necessary. Summary: Do not speak between the Tefillin Shel Yad and Shel Rosh—not even to answer Amen or Kaddish. If caught in the middle, stop silently and listen ( Shome'a Ke'Oneh )—but only if the Hazan has intent to fulfill others' obligation. If one did answer , most Sephardic Poskim say he should not repeat the Beracha , though it is discouraged. Best of all is to time your Tefillin placement so that you are not mid-wrap when Kaddish or Kedusha begins.

Who Is Kadosh?

Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour

**Today's Halacha is dedicated f or the refuah and haslacha of Ronnie, Sharon, Eli and all the children of CARE** On Purim morning, one should make an effort to wake up extra early and recite Tehilim. This is based on the Hida (Rav Haim Yosef David Azulai, 1724-1807), who writes in his "Devash L'fi" that there are five special days during the year that one should arise at "Hashkama"-extra early: Tisha B'ab, Shabuot, Rosh Hashana, Hoshana Rabba and Purim. He says that this is alluded to in the word "AVRaHaM" in the verse "Vayashkem AVRraHaM BaBoker"-Avraham arose early in the morning. The letter "Aleph" of Avraham, hints to "Echa" which is read on Tisha B'ab; the "Vet" refers to Shabuot on which the Torah was given, and the Torah begins with the letter "Bet;" the "Resh" refers to Rosh Hashana; the "Heh" alludes to Hoshana Rabbah; and the "Mem" hints to the Megillah of Purim. *** The special Tefila of "Al Hanisim" is inserted into the Amidah of Purim. If one forgot to do so, he does not have to go back and repeat the Amidah. Nevertheless, it is preferable to recite the "Al Hanisim" at the expense of prolonging his Amidah and missing the Kedusha with the Sibbur, than to skip it and finish earlier. *** The Torah reading for Purim is "VaYavo Amalek," in Parshat B'shalach. Since it only has nine verses, the accepted custom is to read the last verse twice to complete the requisite ten verses need for a public Torah reading. It is important for everyone to hear this Parasha. Those who missed hearing Parashat Zachor can fulfill the Misva with this reading, if they have intent to do so. The Kaf HaHaim (Rav Yaakob Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939, Ch. 693:25) writes that if someone cannot attend Bet Knesset on Purim day, he should read this passage by himself at home with the Ta'amim (cantillation). After reading the Torah, the Tefila continues with "Ashreh" and the beginning of "Uva Lesion." The Megillah is read before the Pasuk "V'atah Kadosh." In the morning, "Shehecheyanu" is not recited on the Megillah, according to the practice of the Sepharadim. The Sefer Torah is kept out until after the Megillah is read, because the Megillah states, "LaYehudim Hayta Orah V'simcha, V'saon V'y'kar"-the Jews had light and joy and happiness and glory. The Gemara understands that Orah (light) refers to the light of the Torah. One should not take off his Tefilin before the completion of the Megillah, because the same verse says that the Jews had "Y'kar"-glory. The Gemara understands that it is referring to Tefilin. In fact, the custom is to kiss the Tefilin when that word is read. If there is a Brit Mila, some say that it is performed prior to the Megillah reading to correspond to a word in that same Pasuk "Sason"-joy, which the Hachamim understand to be Brit Mila. However, the accepted practice is to conduct the Mila after Shaharit. *** There is no obligation to recite Hallel on Purim. One reason for this is that the reading of the Megillah, which tells the story of the miraculous events, takes the place of Hallel. Therefore, if one cannot hear the Megillah, there are Poskim who hold that he should recite the complete Hallel. This should be done without a Beracha, as there is a difference of opinion on the matter. After the Shir Shel Yom (Psalm of the Day), the Mizmor (Tehilim 22) "Al Ayelet Hashachar" is added. Esther was referred to as "Ayelet Hashachar," and this was the prayer she offered upon approaching the King's private chamber. *** It is prohibited to eat even a small amount before hearing the Megillah on Purim morning, even if one has already prayed. Therefore, one should insure that his wife and children hear the Megillah promptly, so that they can eat. *** Immediately after Shaharit, the Matanot LaEvyonim are distributed. Performing this Misva early is not only a fulfillment of "Zerizim Makdimim L'Misvot," but it also enables the recipients to use the money to buy what they lack for the holiday. *** The Shulhan Aruch rules that the Beracha of Shehecheyanu is not recited before reading the Megillah in the morning. This applies even if one did not fulfill the Misva of Megillah the previous night. One should have in mind to include the other Misvot when he hears the Beracha at night. *** The Hida (Lev David, Ch. 30) brings a custom for both men and women to light two candles in honor of Mordechai and Esther on Purim. After lighting the candles, one should give Sedaka and offer heartfelt prayers and requests in their merit. There is a widespread custom to don costumes on Purim. The Hida mentions this specifically regarding the Seudah. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909, Ateret Tiferet) brings a custom for women to adorn themselves with their fanciest jewelry, even more than Shabbat and Yom Tov. This custom has its origins in the Kabbalah. This should only be done within the confines of her own home and not to go out publicly, so as not to breach the standards of modesty.
