A thorough review of the current status in the Russian-Ukraine War and what's to come is followed by an overdue conversation on consequences. Why is it that many Americans today think that the First Amendment protects them from the blowback of public consensus when they choose to say or express controversial or offensive thoughts and ideas? Or the idea that in doing so you should be safe guarded from economic consequences that may follow those actions. We seem to live in a world where everyone thinks that life plays out like a Hollywood movie and that results should happen the way we want and in expedited real time. What are the consequences to falling into this pattern of thinking and in living our lives with this mindset? Join us for our final episode of Season 2- it's a solid gold doozie!

In which we talk about Foundation, S2E04 "Where the Stars are Scattered Thinly." We're joined this week by Joel McKinnon, host of Seldon Crisis, another excellent Foundation Podcast! As the season slows down a bit to focus on some of the significant plotlines we get the closest thing to a special Valentine's Day episode that this show could possibly do. Meanwhile, Gaal, as the narrator, tells us repeatedly that "Psychohistory does not give a damn about how you monkeys hook up." I'm paraphrasing. The narration notwithstanding the situation on Terminus is framed by Hober and Constant's sexual tension. Will they or won't they? Watch the episode! We learn a lot about the situation with Queen Sereth. Sereth flirts with Brother Dawn! Rue flirts with Brother Dusk! It's all about what Brother Day may or may not have done. Will anybody flirt with Markley? Only time will tell! And we see Bel Riose's story unfolding through the lens of his relationship with Glawin. "By the time you recognize an atrocity," says Glawin "you may have already been complicit in one!" What does that mean? I don't know, but it seems ominous! At least we don't see Day and Demerzel in this context; I don't need to hear my skin crawl this week. It all seems important! I'm pretty sure Gaal is an unreliable narrator here. Also, enough is going on about wine to make for a reasonable freshman comp essay or at least a session or two with a good therapist. We've got a lot to talk about! Join us!

Everyday Happiness - Finding Harmony and Bliss

The size of the reward matters little; it is all about anticipation! Tune in today to learn more about reward systems for improving happiness.    Transcript:   Welcome to Everyday Happiness where we create lasting happiness, in about 2 minutes a day,  through my signature method of Intentional Margins® (creating harmony between your to-dos and your priorities), happiness science, and musings about life.    I'm your host Katie Jefcoat, and yesterday we talked about treating ourselves to improve happiness. Essentially, we discussed how rewarding ourselves after working hard on a task was an excellent method of enhancing happiness and satisfaction. We all love getting a pat on the back for a well-done job. After reading an article from Psychology Today on learning and reward systems, I want to add a side note. In this article, Dr. Robb Rutledge performed an experiment on learning and rewards. In the study, he found that the reward size didn't matter as much as the learning process. What this shows us is that creating reward systems for ourselves doesn't have to be some huge dramatic process. You certainly don't need a month-long trip to Rome just because you cleaned the bathrooms. You just need a little something that can kick your butt into gear! Something small, easy, and beneficial to your life can be all the reward you need to feel motivated. Whether it's a five-minute dance break, a piece of chocolate, a phone call to a friend, or whatever lights your hair on fire, it's worth it if it motivates you. This got me thinking, what of my favorite self-rewards are easy, cheap, and manageable on a regular basis; here's what I came up with: -          A quick trip to my favorite coffee shop -          A 20-minute walk through the neighborhood -          A mid-day tv episode of my favorite show -          A surprise mommy-kiddo date with my kids So, friends, I rechallenge you to think of one reward you can give yourself today after completing a task that may be daunting. I believe in you, and I know you can get that treat!  And remember, kindness is contagious, so go out and spread some kindness today.  Everyday Happiness delivered to your inbox by subscribing at: https://www.katiejefcoat.com/happiness   And, let's connect on social at @everydayhappinesswithkatie  and join the community on the hashtags #IntentionalMargins and #everydayhappinesswithkatie on Instagram   Links:  https://onamission.bio/everydayhappiness/   Inspired by this article in Psychology Today:   https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-happiness-equation/202106/why-learning-not-rewards-may-be-the-key-happiness

(But that time is gone) Certainly not now In the midst of life's straits With foamy waves pounding And hidden reefs lurking Beneath an angry, fluid surface. No; Not now. Now they need a captain (is that presumptuous?) Who has already navigated a similar course – though more Hazelwood than Magellan. (well, all Hazelwood and no Magellan) Perhaps that time will be When they've helmed their own ship. Is my absence inconsequential then? Can I cross the bar then? Of course they'll think of me and perhaps Want to see my face and Hear my voice (or have me hear their voice and see their face) But would my absence harm them? in those later years? That is the question. But here's the better question: Would my absence now be better than running them aground, again and again and taking on salty water to no seeming end? I've given it a go. But the ship lists endlessly and The course seems fucked. Would the idea of me Be better than the reality? That is the real question. No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee. We say hello again to Jack Robertson and say our goodbyes to Ryan and Graham. Mostly we just ask each other, why does Chris Chibnall keeps telling us how great things are instead of actually showing us? Opening music is "367 Minutes" and closing music is "Something Revolutionary" both composed by Segun Akinola. We recorded this episode on 5 June 2022.

This week Eric Kohn, Sam Gregg, and Dan Hugger discuss the retirement of Stephen Breyer from the Supreme Court. Will he have an enduring legacy, or will he be largely forgotten? How should we evaluate his jurisprudence? He is often thought of as a moderate liberal but was frequently deferential to state power. Can we expect any fireworks from the confirmation hearing of his successor, or will it be a far duller affair compared to those of Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett? Then the Acton gang discuss what action the Federal Reserve is likely to take to combat inflation. How much of a shock to the economic system would an increase in interest rates be, and what's the likely political fallout? Finally, they consider Eric's recent Detroit News op-ed, arguing for COVID-19 risk assessment and decision making to be made on a personal and family level. How long can “COVID Zero” approaches endure? And how much longer will we continue masking kids in schools?
