In this podcast episode, Nicole O'Byrne talks to Kent Roach about his book, Canadian Justice, Indigenous Injustice: The Gerald Stanley and Colten Boushie Case, published by McGill-Queen's University Press in 2019. In August 2016, Colten Boushie, a twenty-two-year-old Cree man from Red Pheasant First Nation, was fatally shot on a Saskatchewan farm by white farmer Gerald Stanley. In a trial that bitterly divided Canadians, Stanley was acquitted of both murder and manslaughter by a jury in Battleford with no visible Indigenous representation. In Canadian Justice, Indigenous Injustice, Kent Roach critically reconstructs the Gerald Stanley/Colten Boushie case to examine how it may be a miscarriage of justice. Roach provides historical, legal, political, and sociological background to the case including misunderstandings over crime when Treaty 6 was negotiated. Kent Roach is a professor of law at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Law. A thoughtful and prolific author, he has worked on over 13 collections of essays, over a dozen books, and approximately 300 articles on a wide range of topics including criminal law, policing, terrorism, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom. Kent has won numerous research and teaching prizes and has been appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. This podcast is produced by Jessica Schmidt. After the Frog Lake Massacre and the North West Resistance, eight Indigenous men were arrested and put on trial. The trial was a foregone conclusion, and all were put to death outside Battleford in 1885. It was the largest mass hanging in Canadian history. Kelly Waters had just opened a new live music venue called She-Nanigans when the global COVID-19 pandemic hit. This timing might have been a recipe for disaster, but Kelly was determined to keep being a beacon of positivity during this crisis. She has continued teaching her students remotely, and has turned her passion for cooking into free meals for individuals and community organizations in need. And while the stage at She-Nanigans has remained empty, Kelly started up a "Battlefords' Got Talent - Online" competition, offering up $1,000 in prizes to celebrate the musical and performance art talent of the community.During this conversation, Kelly explains the origins of the vision behind She-Nanigans, what drives her to make a difference, and how the community has responded to her efforts.-Untapped is hosted by Matt Jacques, a Battlefords-based photographer, writer and podcaster. Thanks again to Untapped Season One host Eric Anderson, who had to step down from hosting duties to tend to a few of his other projects, including YXE Underground, a fantastic podcast telling stories from the Saskatoon community.Battlefords Untapped is a proud member of the Saskatchewan Podcast Network!

Gene Aulinger knows how to tell a story. I thought I would break the ice with this well known North Battleford music teacher and architect of the city's music scene by asking him to describe the beautiful Fall day we were experiencing when we met in late September. Instead, he immediately hooked me in by explaining how a young music teacher from Milwaukee, Wisconsin ended up teaching in small town Saskatchewan and eventually in North Battleford! For more than 30 years, Gene has been empowering students of all ages to pursue their music dreams. The result is a vibrant music scene in North Battleford with many world class musicians leaving their mark across the continent. In this episode, Gene explains how exactly a kid from Wisconsin ends up in Saskatchewan and what it is about North Battleford that has kept him in the community for so long. He also describes the positive impact music can have on kids, whether they aspire to be the next Mozart or not. Gene's kindness and passion are clear in this episode, and I think you will connect with both of these wonderful qualities. Please leave a review for the podcast and tell all your friends about it. You can also find Untapped on Facebook and Instagram, where you will see some great portraits of Gene taken by local photographer and wonderful human being, Matt Jacques. Untapped is a proud member of the Saskatchewan Podcast Network. Thanks for listening!Cheers...Eric
Colleen Sabraw knows the importance of building connections between kids in North Battleford and nature. Colleen is the Executive Director of the Battlefords Early Childhood Intervention Program and played a significant role in creating something unique for children in the community. Last year, Saskatchewan’s first natural playground was opened in North Battleford’s Centennial Park. It bypasses the usual plastic slides and metal monkey bars of playgrounds and instead uses trees, rocks, hills and grass to encourage kids to get out and enjoy nature within city limits. Colleen loves her community and that was abundantly clear when we she met Eric at the playground on a windy Fall day.
Shane Neville of Buster Punksjoins Drew and Chris this week to talk about his gaming career and a little bit about his current projects. The conversation turns to compulsion loops found in gaming that lead to addictive behavior as seen with Fortnite. The trio talk about the stumbling blocks for parents involving games of this kind including the need for involvement, the basic knowledge of how the industry works, and the intentional design of the compulsion loop. The second half of the show reflects on Shane's years growing up in Battleford, Sask. in Canada. Raised in the small rural town where the traffic jams were Sunday afternoons instead of 5pm on weekdays, Shane discovered that not everyone goes to church once he arrived at college. While no longer identifying as a Christian but as an atheist, Shane talks about his belief in the goodness inherent in humankind as well as the unconditional love of his mother and the affect of leaving the faith on a religious family.

The Roy Green Show After a reportedly all-white jury found Saskatchewan farmer Gerald Stanley not guilty of the 2016 shooting death of Colten Boushie from the Red Pheasant First Nation, there was outrage from members of First Nations communities across Canada. Recognize, improvise, adapt and thrive. Those are the key skills which lay the ground work for a phenomenal program in North Battleford called B.E.A.T.S. (Building Expression and Awareness Through Theatre and Sound). Alan Corbeil, a North Battleford social worker, created this program in partnership with the Living Sky School Division and the Prairie North Health Region. The program targets at-risk youth and teaches them the skills that set a course for a future full of hope. B.E.A.T.S. uses creativity to tap into each of the participant's gifts, and the result is proof in this episode. Kevin Power is joined by Alan along with Holly (artistic director), and two of the programs success stories - Talia and Sereta. You'll be truly touched by just how articulate, dynamic and confident these two young girls are, and they both credit the B.E.A.T.S. program for their newly found sense of self. ============================================== SaskScapes is a podcast featuring the stories of arts, culture and heritage in Saskatchewan.
