This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 62nd New York Film Festival with Universal Language director Matthew Rankin, cast members Ila Firouzabadi & Pirouz Nemati, and producer Sylvain Corbeil. A Currents selection of NYFF62, Universal Language is now in select theaters, courtesy of Oscilloscope. With deadpan, absurdist charm, Manitoban filmmaker Matthew Rankin triangulates a group of interconnected storylines set in a wintry, bleakly beautiful Winnipeg. Two kids discover a bank note frozen in a block of ice, which they hope to retrieve to buy their classmates a new pair of glasses. A tour guide brings befuddled visitors on a walking tour of the city's modest environs. A melancholy man (Rankin, in an autobiographical role) returns home from Montreal to reunite with his family after many years. Imagining a city in which Farsi is the predominant language, Rankin's visually and narratively inventive film was inspired by Iranian films of the 1970s, frequently humanistic children's fables, in this case transferred to a world of beige, concrete brutalist buildings and increasingly surreal, Tati-esque humor. Universal Language was the winner of the Directors' Fortnight Audience Award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. NYFF62 Currents features are sponsored by Mubi.
Daily Halacha Podcast - Daily Halacha By Rabbi Eli J. Mansour
Ashkenazim have the custom not to eat "Kitniyot"-various beans and legumes on Pesah. The earliest authority to record this custom is the SaMaK, (Sefer Misvot Katan by Rabbi Yishak of Corbeil, 13th century) who lived 750 years ago. The reason he gives is that these foods can be confused with Hames grains, such as wheat. Just as wheat can be ground into flour, so too corn and lentils can also be dried and made into flour. Interestingly, he also includes mustard seed in the list of "Kitniyot." Even though it is not made into flour, nevertheless, it grows in pods and could also be mistaken for wheat. In later generations, the Ashkenazi Poskim discuss whether other foods, such as coffee beans, peanuts and quinoa, would also be considered "Kitniyot." Rav Shlomo Amar and Rav Moshe Feinstein rule that any food that wasn't known in the Western world at the time of the original institution of the Gezera was not included in the custom. There was a controversy with regard to whether potatoes are considered "Kitniyot." Some held that since they were common at the time of the Gezera, and they can also be used to produce starch, they should be included in the custom. Nevertheless, the predominant custom is for Ashkenazim to use potatoes on Pesah. These Halachot are relevant for a Sepharadi who hosts an Ashkenazi on Pesah. One should only serve an Ashkenazi guest foods that are not Kitniyot. However, there is no problem using the same pots used to prepare Kitniyot. The Gezera did not extend to the taste emitted from the pots. SUMMARY An Ashkenazi guest should only be served non-Kitniyot foods on Pesah.

In this program, we compare dreaming and improvisation focusing on creative synergies, experiential similarities, and the underlying neurophysiology. These states of mind are mutually illuminating. That is, learning about one provides insights into the other. A key insight here is that we can deepen our understanding of improvisation by exploring other states of mind that have overlapping experiential qualities or brain states. In his book Dreams of Awakening, Charlie Morley writes that “…there are many different ways to tell the difference between [different states of experience], but the easiest way to get to grips with these differences is to spend as much time as we can in these states.” I propose that this is the case for improvisation, as well. By paying more attention to our dreaming experiences, we may deepen our knowledge of the experience of improvisation. How has it been five and a half years since we've had Sawdust on the pod? Outrageous. Sam, Jimbo and Brenden of the legendary Muskoka brewery joined Cee and Nate to chat about what has been going on with them since the winter of 2018, the changes in their branding, how they've tweaked their recipes to create some of the finest beers in Ontario, their strong focus on crispies, why their retail space is so thoughtful, why opening a brewery right now might prove to be quite difficult, the resurgence of West Coast IPAs, and of course, they got into the weeds about our latest collab, Get It In Y'a! V2.0. They crushed Sägemehl Stadt Festbier, San Diego Dreamin' Dark Lager collab with Short Finger, Horchata White Milk Stout, Limberlost Pomme with West Avenue Cider, Wayback Playback West Coast IPA and Get It In Y'a! V2.0. Always a pleasure - cheers! BAOS Podcast Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube | Website | Theme tune: Cee - BrewHeads
Link Up Series 6 is in the building! We're kicking off the latest collaboration series with a brewery that's super close to our hearts - Sawdust City! Co-Founder Sam Corbeil joins Cee and Tiff to chat about the importance of ties to the community in a region like Muskoka, why they offer such a wide variety of styles, their approach to "gateway beer" and how that offers access to many communities, how the younger generation is approaching beer, and the effects of pricing of beer. Sawdust delivered their Lemongrass Rice Lager with Sabro and Sorachi Ace hops, a bright, crisp, citrusy gem with awesome tropical vibes from the coconut that couldn't be more perfect for the patio. Plus there's a sneak peak of Sawdust and BAOS's newest collab beer, Get It In Y'a V2.0. Cheers! About the Link Up season: We're back with a brand new season of BAOS Podcast, and this one is something very special and very close to us. We'll be focusing this entire season on Link Up, a non-profit started by the good folks behind Microbrasserie 5e Baron in Aylmer, QC and Tiffany and Cee here at BAOS and High Season Co. Our aim with this program is to help BIPOC from underrepresented communities learn about and enter the craft beer industry in essentially any area they wish - from a brewing apprentice to taking the Cicerone course for front-of-house opportunities, from hop farming to the yeast lab, from beer media to design and photography, we're here to help diversify an industry that is in dire need of it. Empire and Progress in the Victorian Secularist Movement: Imagining a Secular World (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) by Dr. Patrick Corbeil is the first extensive historical analysis of the relationship between empire and the Victorian secularist movement. Historians have paid little attention to the role of empire in the development of organized free thought. Secularism as it developed in Britain and its settler colonies was an overtly outward-looking, global ideology in a period marked by the rise of scientific rationalism and belief in the logic of a European civilizing mission. Recent scholarship has focused on how the empire influenced British and American atheists on the question of race. What is missing is an in-depth examination of the formation of secularist ideas about universal progress, ethics, and secular morality. Through an examination of the secularist periodical and pamphlet press, this book argues that the religious diversity of the British Empire helped to shape the ethical worldview of the secularists, providing ammunition for their critiques of Christian morality and the church and justification for their policy reform proposals both in Britain and the colonies. Patrick Corbeil is an independent scholar living in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. He is also the Associate Director with the International Society for Historians of Atheism, Secularism, and Humanism (ISHASH).
