Summary Twice a year billions of birds migrate across the U.S. We've only recently discovered just how large that number really is. Being able to quantify that number is thanks to a large degree to a program called BirdCast which anyone from backyard birders to scientists to emergency managers can use. Join us as we dive into the fascinating world of bird migration. Today's guest Dr. Andrew Farnsworth is a visiting scientist at Cornell Lab of Ornithology and a member of the BirdCast Team, which is using radar to track and study bird migrations over the U.S. 3 things you'll learn from this episode: About bird migration including when they migrate, why they migrate, impacts of both human induced and natural climate change, and much more. The importance of making natural history observations and how technology can enhance, but not replace, those observations. The many ways in which BirdCast is being used by birds and by scientists, starting with giving us concrete data on the mind-blowingly large numbers of birds that migrate over the U.S. each year. On January 27, 1958, newspaper editor Olga Huckins sat down to write an angry letter to a friend. Olga and her husband owned a private two-acre bird sanctuary, and the previous summer the government had sprayed the pesticide DDT all over that two acres to control the mosquitos. She saw wildlife, particularly birds, getting sick and dying. The friend Olga sent the letter to was none other than Rachel Carson, who would go on to write the book Silent Spring, exposing the dangers of synthetic pesticides, including DDT, and helping push forward the modern environmental movement and the creation of the US Environmental Protection Agency.Today on the show we're going to talk about the history of pesticides and their deployment, and how researchers are working to develop more effective, safer pesticides. We will also take a fascinating dive into the coevolution of plants and pests, specifically insects, and what we're learning about the effectiveness of pesticides based on hundreds of millions of years of plant and insect evolution. A superhero origin story would absolutely be 12 years in a cage and then set free by secretive criminals. That's the story of Flaco, the Eurasian Eagle Owl, released from his vandalised cage in Central Park Zoo, New York City. He turned up in the middle of an intersection nearby, looking dazed and people in the know thought, ‘This is going to end badly,' because animals released from captivity have an extremely low survival rate. But Flaco – ‘skinny' in Spanish – flew in the face of all that. Flaco not only learned to live, he seemed to thrive. He turned up on fire escapes and windowsills, and was photographed around Manhattan like a coked-up socialite with wide eyes and fabulous ear tufts. But, how long could Flaco possibly last in the graveyard of bird diversity that is the city? How long could he fly without confusing a window for the sky?Featuring:Ed Shanahan, Metro reporter, The New York Times. Julia Wang, Project leader, BirdCast at Cornell University. Brendon Samuels, Fatal Light Awareness Program and Western University in Canada.Dr Kylie Soanes, Urban ecologist at The University of Melbourne.Mat Howard, Midjuburi Ward (Marrickville), Inner West Council, NSW.Production:Ann Jones, Presenter / Producer.Petria Ladgrove, Producer.Additional mastering: Hamish Camilleri. This episode of What the Duck?! was produced on the land of the Wadawarrung and Kaurna people.
Every December, during the Christmas Bird Count, tens of thousands of volunteers look to the skies for an international census of wild birds. But during migration season, a much smaller squad of New York City volunteers take on a more sobering experience: counting dead birds that have collided with glass buildings and fallen back to Earth. In this episode, we find out what kind of people volunteer for this grisly job, visit the New York City rehab center that takes in injured pigeons, and find out how to stop glass from killing an estimated one billion birds nationwide every year. Today Evan and Nate sit down a go birding with Andrew Farnsworth. Andrew Farnsworth is currently a Senior Research Associate in the Center for Avian Population Studies at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Andrew began birding at age 5 and quickly developed his long-standing fascinations with bird migration. His current research efforts advance the use and application of rapidly expanding technologies to study bird movements across scales including weather surveillance radar, audio and video recording and monitoring tools, citizen science datasets, and machine learning techniques. Andrew received his BS in Natural Resources from Cornell, MS in Zoology from Clemson University, and PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Cornell University. He lives in New York, NY with his wife Patricia and two daughters Aja and Elle.We begin by discussing birds we are seeing as well as highlights from the Piatt County CBC. In our attempt to help out the AOC, we throw out new names for Swainson's Warbler.A majority of this show is spent discussing BirdCast. Andrew has been with BirdCast since the beginning. We discuss its origins, functionality, accuracy and future. Additionally we chat about citizen science datasets, dangers, and responsibility. https://birdcast.info/
A blip on weather radar might not be a cloud — it could be thousands of birds! Biologists use radar to keep track of migratory birds, insects, and bats. An online resource called BirdCast combines decades of biological research, citizen science observations, and radar data to forecast the movements of migratory birds. You can use these predictions to help plan a birding trip.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. A special treat for our loyal BirdCast listeners - a special episode for your enjoyment and education! For decades Jurong Bird Park in Singapore held the mantle of the biggest and most impressive bird collection available for viewing and exhibition to the general public. Jurong Bird Park had the biggest man made waterfall located inside a massive walk in avairy - 30 m tall - and the aviary was lush and planted out in all types of plants and flowers. The bird collection was astounding and at the time the park demonstrated some of the most innovative bird housing arrangements. But as time moves on and technology improves Jurong's environment became outdated and so has been re-invented and re-invigorated into Bird Paradise!Bird Paradise is located within the Mandai Wildlife Reserve of Singapore. It sits alongside the Singapore Zoo.Bird Paradise has utilised the most up to date aviary construction methods and materials and hosts a multitude of absolutely enormous walk-in-avairy collections. Bird Paradise covers around 17 hectares (42 acres) offering double the walk-in-avairy spaces of Jurong Bird Park. A must see is the Hong Leong Foundation Crimson Wetlands - which houses free flying macaws of all types AND the re-created Jurong Falls - although still spectacular and offering a much appreciated cooling mist in the very humid weather of Singapore - the new waterfall is 20m tall - never the less it is still spectacular! If you are visiting Singapore and have even a slight appreciation for birds, do make the effort to go and visit Bird Paradise. If you are like Birdman Dad and the BirdCast team Bird Paradise is sure to become your bird pilgrimage site.https://www.mandai.com/en/bird-paradise.htmlWe have placed photos and videos on instagram, Facebook and have also created a You Tube video of the visit.https://youtu.be/ovwoRgYQn4Qhttps://www.instagram.com/birdman_dad/?show_story_unavailable=1&hl=en

Josh was Born in New Jersey, raised in Iowa, schooled in Boston (hit up LA for a bit but missed the cold) and settled in Chicago, Josh is a commercial voice actor, TV character actor (did all the Chicago shows, you've seen him, he's THAT guy), writer/combatant for Write Club Chicago and stage actor who's worked with Steppenwolf, Interrobang, Factory Theater, Babes with Blades and Second City Chicago (his newest show is THE MARK OF KANE at CityLit and it's all about the creation of BATMAN so check that out!) and moonlights as the writer/performer of Chad the Bird at the Paper Machete every Saturday at the Green Mill Lounge Chicago 3pm CDT (FREE!). He's also down to talk about horror movies and cooking any time. Chad the Bird - America's premiere talking bird (yeah I mean Big Bird but they're for kids), he debuted in the porn-themed sketch show SOFT CORN PORN back in 2006 before getting hired on as the Avian Op-Ed columnist for the Paper Machete at the Green Mill Lounge in Chicago where he has perched since 2010. You can find him ranting and raving on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube and on his weekly Chad the Birdcast available on itunes, spotify and stitcher. He also wrote an article for the Chicago Reader on where to find the best snacks on National Weed Day.
Many birds migrate at night, taking advantage of less turbulent conditions and cooler temperatures. But that also means that migrating birds can get disoriented by bright lights and collide with a building. Julia Wang is the project leader for BirdCast, which provides forecasts for bird migration so that people know when they should keep their lights off. Turning off the lights during peak migration times can save birds and save energy at the same time.More info and transcript at BirdNote.org. Want more BirdNote? Subscribe to our weekly newsletter. There is great nutrition, enrichment and usefulness is all sorts of plants for aviary, companion, rescue and zoo living birds - in fact so many plants are so good for every bird's health and general wellbeing. But sadly many bird owners are unsure of, or unaware, of the plant treasure trove in their very own gardens. Many bird owners are unsure which plants are "safe" and which ones are going to make their birds sick.So hopefully today's episode can help you out! While Birdman Dad is away working his "real job" the crew have stepped in to chat about what plants they grow in their garden and in their aviaries, that are not only good for their birds to eat, but also provide much needed enrichment and mental stimulation as well as being useful nesting and protection materials.Remember the BirdCast competition is still on! In response to listener requests today BirdCast is presenting a very brief review of what people can do to help birds with regards to their existing glass windows and glass pool fencing. This is a real snap shot of what you can do - just remember in windows whatever you"do" has to be on the outside of the window - and everything must cover the entire glass space and be no more than 5cm apart.Any art pen markings or the paracord must be 3.5mm thick. There are photos of all these options on Bird man Dad's instagram, reddit and facebook pages.Be sure to get your entry in for our listener competition!Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Birdman-Dad-1678314232464220https://www.facebook.com/groups/1892441777643619Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/birdman_dad/?show_story_unavailable=1&hl=enReddithttps://www.reddit.com/user/birdmandad/
"We are their only, hope, and I am confident we will make our windows safe for birds because it is the right thing to do." Dr Daniel Klem Jnr, 2021.This is the third episode concerning the very large conservation issue of wild bird deaths because of clear glass/plastic used as glass - the glass we have in windows, sliding doors and pool fencing. This episode is all about what we are doing in Australia, how much an issue it is in Australia and what products are available today for purchase in Australia to make glass bird safe.BirdCast encourages all Australians to supply information to Birdlife Australia, and/or the Global Bird Collision Mapper - for without enough Australian based information (despite the international data) building codes and all three levels of Australian government are highly unlikely to change to become bird safe.A first for BirdCast is our first listener competition! Migratory birds use starlight to find their way on their long journeys — which makes light pollution a serious threat. Drawn off course by bright, artificial lighting, birds can wind up fatally colliding with windows or wasting precious time and energy that they need to survive. “Lights Out” programs get cities and their residents to turn off nonessential lighting during migration seasons which can help make their journeys a little easier (and save energy!). BirdCast, a tool that can forecast the peak migration nights of the season, is helping these programs make a greater impact. Whether it is seeing the first robin, geese overhead, warblers, or watching the first hummingbird and oriole at the feeder, it is a much-anticipated event. Now, with the help of the BirdCast website, we can gain a better understating of these birds' migrations and perhaps a better idea of when they will show up in our area.

Tudor is joined by Dellar, Bungle, Kennedy, and Barney to surmise the football (real and imaginary). Not 100% on why this one is bird-themed.
Today's episode (Part1) is a plea to humans of our world to change what they are doing for the sake - and lives - of all wild birds. And everyone can take part - with somewhat reasonable ease - to alter their own solid air and literally save billions of our beautiful, wild birds. For as "noice" as clear sheet glass (or the plastic alternative is) - you know the glass we use in windows, pool fencing, exhibit barracades, building frontages - reflective glass included - this material is lethal to the free flying birds of our world. But don't take BirdCast's word for it - instead listen to the world authority on this issue that has literally dedicated decades of his life to researching the issue, examining the existing building use of clear sheet glass and most importantly how each and every human on this planet can reduce this needless slaughter for the sake of an uninterupted view. Daniel Klem (jnr) is a Professor of Ornithology and Conservation Biology at a University in Pennsylvania. He has dedicated some 47 years to researching the issue of bird strike on glass windows/barricades and states that this issue is quite literally killing billions of birds worldwide..... yet no one is reporting the issue, and worse, we humans keep building with the glass as we have done for years, making no changes what so ever to rectify the bird deaths. We simply can not "offset" the magnitude of these wild bird deaths.Dan has written a book on this exact topic, and how every human can take their own steps to reverse the carnage - from individual home owners, to Local Government Planning authorities, to National building Codes creators - every human has a role. Dan's book is called:"Solid Air - Invisible Killer: saving billions of birds from windows". The book explains that where ever standard clear or reflective sheet glass exists so do dead birds. But it also explains how easily this problem can be rectified.Join BirdCast in this discussion of this significant environmental calamity, but also join us in the solutions. This discussion will be presented over 2 episodes.https://www.booktopia.com.au/solid-air-daniel-klem/book/9780888396464.htmlFacebook - Birdman Dadhttps://www.facebook.com/Birdman-Dad-1678314232464220https://www.facebook.com/groups/1892441777643619Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/birdman_dad/?show_story_unavailable=1&hl=enReddit:https://www.reddit.com/user/birdmandad/

Birdcast has a loyal group of listeners from Ukraine and our thoughts are with them, their families and their avian family (as well as other innocent animals) during this darkest time in their lives.
