Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Ben NobleBen Noble released his 3rd album 'Bitter Work' on May 26, 2023. Bitter Work is a journey through the constructs of his religious roots and the ways that he has tried to learn outside the confines of dualism - right and wrong aren't as certain as we are taught.Ben Noble is a Minneapolis-based artist and producer. His serene, innocent melodies drift lithely along sonic textures that range from sleepy-time folk to intrusive, experimental synth scapes. Through any aural difference, the heart is the same: Noble wants to embody his truth and experiences in his music.
Today we are joined by Ben Noble in studio. We talked about his new album, Bitter Work. Ben is a Colorado native and we talk about where he was and where he is now. Sugar is a big part of Americans' daily diet, but we rarely ask where that sweet cane comes from. In November, the United States announced that it will block all imports of raw sugar from one of those sources: the cane fields owned by the Central Romana Corp. in the Dominican Republic. U.S. Customs and Border Protection cited labor abuses in its decision. Sugar from Central Romana feeds into the supply chains of major U.S. brands, including Domino and Hershey. The federal government's action follows a two-year investigation by Reveal and Mother Jones. Reporters Sandy Tolan and Euclides Cordero Nuel visited Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic who do the backbreaking work of cutting sugarcane for little pay. Central Romana is the Dominican Republic's largest private employer and has strong links to two powerful Florida businessmen, Alfonso and Pepe Fanjul. The reporters speak to workers who have no access to government pensions, so they're forced to work in the fields into their 80s for as little as $3 a day. In the 1990s, Tolan reported on human trafficking and child labor in the Dominican sugar industry. Conditions improved following pressure on the government from local activists, human rights groups and the U.S. Labor Department. But major problems have persisted. After Reveal's story first aired in fall 2021, Congress took action. Fifteen members of the House Ways and Means Committee called on federal agencies to formulate a plan to address what they called the “slave-like conditions” in the Dominican cane fields. Central Romana also took action: It bulldozed one of the worker camps our reporters visited, claiming it was part of an improvement program. Residents say that with very little warning, they were told to pack up their lives. Central Romana denies the U.S. government's recent findings that its cane cutters are working under forced labor conditions. This is an update of an episode that originally aired in September 2021. Sugar is a big part of Americans' daily diet. But who harvests some of that sweet cane? Reporters Sandy Tolan and Euclides Cordero Nuel visit Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic who do the backbreaking work of cutting sugarcane for little pay. They live in work camps, or “bateyes,” that are part of a vast sugar plantation owned by the Central Romana Corp. The company is the Dominican Republic's largest private employer and has strong links to two powerful Florida businessmen, Alfonso and Pepe Fanjul. The reporters speak to workers who have no access to government pensions, so they're forced to work in the fields into their 80s for as little as $3 a day. Through its sugar exports to the U.S. and other businesses, Central Romana generates an estimated $1.5 billion a year – but some workers are so poor they can't afford doctors' visits. In the 1990s, Tolan reported on human trafficking and child labor in the Dominican sugar industry. Conditions improved following pressure on the government from local activists, human rights groups, and the U.S. Labor Department. But major problems persist. And cane cutters say they must go into deep debt just to survive, leaving them trapped. After Reveal's story aired in fall 2021, Congress took action. Fifteen members of the House Ways and Means Committee called on federal agencies to formulate a plan to address what they called the “slave-like conditions” in the Dominican cane fields. Central Romana also took action: It bulldozed one of the bateyes our reporters visited. The company contends it was part of an improvement program, but residents say that with very little warning, they were told to pack up their lives. They were loaded onto trucks and moved to other bateyes, as their settlement was wiped off the map. This is an update of an episode that originally aired in September 2021. Training is underway for our hero and our antihero in 'Bitter Work'. While Aang is learning how to earth bend from Toph our boy Zuko is finally learning how to lightening bend from Iroh. And in 'The Library' the gang enjoys a series of holidays that land them in Wan Shi Tong's library where they find out about a crucial weakness to the Fire Nation - but the trip comes at a great cost. Join Karl (Airbender) and Mary-Kate (Firebender) as they learn the fighting styles of the four nations and hang out with the Knowledge Seekers.
Yip Yip, friends! This episode we cover the Book Two chapters 7: Zuko Alone, 8: The Chase, and 9: Bitter Work. Troy starts this episode jacked up on "green tea". Jordan talks about all the "Zs" in the Fire Nation Royal Family, which confuses Katie because she thought it was Fire Lord "Susan". Katie and Troy spread conspiracies about the House of Windsor and similarities to the Fire Nation. Jordan draws parallels between the way Zuko and Aang approach new villages and decides Aang is probably more effective. Troy decides to stand up halfway through because...? Jordan reveals Lo and Li apparently are the pilots of the weird freaky train thing in "The Chase" and Katie isn’t happy about mongoose lizards. Troy and Jordan disagree on whether or not Zuko is a kid and Troy announces he is fed up with the motivations of our antagonists and wants Azula’s motivation to be torture. It gets crazy.

Aang learns to earthbend and we get sidetracked to Bonanza and West Wing.
This week we discuss Book 2: Earth, Episode 9 (29) "Bitter Work," which is a very apt title given the rigors Aang and Zuko have to endure. But it's not all bad; this episode has some deep lessons and charming comedy, too! As a bonus, we discuss a recent interview given by Aaron Ehasz, and give our thoughts on what could've been and how much we may (or may not) have enjoyed it.Chris: @objective_geek Shawn: @ShawnSchallerAnd, for real, check out Podcasts.com for hosting or listening; it's a tremendous, free service.Scenes, images and music were captured from:"Avatar: The Last Airbender" The Complete Series (DVD).Viacom: Nickelodeon Studios (Oct. 6, 2015).

Kelly, Mike, and JJ talk about The Chase and Bitter Work today. Toph is the greatest and this contrived storyline is beneath her. But for one shining moment Team Avatar and Zuko and Iroh are all on the same side!
A rare celestial event on The Avatar Returns this week as all three hosts agree on all three chapters. In what could conceivably be dubbed the Zuko Cycle, chapters 207-209, “Zuko Alone,” “The Chase,” and “Bitter Work” focus almost exclusively on everyone's favorite banished emo prince as he pulls a Caine from Kung Fu and walks the Earth…Kingdom. The boys talk about the obvious homages to classic westerns like Shane and High Noon, the care and transport of Jesus lizards, and the dramatic heft of characters with deeply emotionally rooted conflicts like Zuko and Azula. Fears that perhaps Book Two might flounder under the sophomore slump turn out to be unwarranted! Next: we take a month off to wage war on Christmas like Fire Lord Ozai. Once the holidays are over, we pick up right where we left off, continuing Book Two with chapters 210-212, “The Library,” “The Desert,” and “The Serpent's Pass.” The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 05:14) Main Topic (05:14 - 1:07:12) Outro / Next (1:07:12 - 1:09:43)
Man, rednecks ruin everything! This week, Avatar: The Last Airbender goes all Deliverance on us, and at least two of our hosts ain't down for that. Chapter 204 takes us to "The Swamp," and introduces us to the Duck Dynasty of the Avatar world. Then we drain the muck our of our boots and celebrate "Avatar Day" with Sokka Holmes and some really friendly townsfolk in chapter 205. And finally, the episode Paul has been waiting for since the beginning is here at last as chapter 206 brings the Boulder-breaking debut of "The Blind Bandit." There's some talk about whether the show and/or the characters are treading a bit of water at the moment (complete with all the terrible puns you'd expect from that). And we close it all out talking about which bending style we each imagine ourselves practicing. Also, we continue to let AJ believe he coined the phrase "the Aang Gang." (Shhh...nobody tell him.) Next: chapters 207-209, "Zuko Alone," "The Chase," and "Bitter Work" bring us to the mid-point of the series. The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 02:15) Main Topic (02:15 - 1:00:45) Outro / Next (1:00:45 - 1:05:12)
Description Todd and Joe, with some helpful expertise from producer Andrew, talk about Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender (not the blue alien movie by James Cameron nor the Shyamalan film, they’re talking about the cartoon series on Nickelodeon). Listen … Continue reading →
