In the final episode of season 26, we are sharing a poignant discussion with Ruth and TC team member, Tina Harris. Tina shares her experience of tarrying as a communal and immersive practice deeply rooted in music, openness, and collective healing. Ruth and Tina explore various themes, including the confrontation of disappointment, doubt, disillusionment, and deconstruction within the tarrying process, and the transformative power of redemptive suffering. They also touch on the importance of lament in spiritual practice and the significance of embracing vulnerability, especially during Holy Week. At the end of this episode we encourage you to reflect deeply and engage fully in the practice of tarrying, to sit with your suffering in the presence of Jesus. We are journeying through Lent with a podcast season entitled “Tarry with Me Awhile: Learnings from the Black Church.” We will use Dr. Selina Stone's book, Tarry Awhile: Wisdom from Black Spirituality for People of Faith, as a guide. Black spirituality has much to offer us in understanding the practice of tarrying as a Lenten practice. Together we will seek a deeper understanding of waiting on God in the liminal space—where the resurrection feels far off, and our deaths and suffering are present. In this episode of Theologically Fashioned, I talk with author and Bible teacher, Rachel Booth Smith about her book Rest Assured, What the Creation Story was Intended to Reveal About Trusting God. This is not a conversation about science. Instead, Rachel asks us to set that aside and become "holy eavesdroppers" as we listen to the creation narrative of Genesis chapter One as an Ancient Near Eastern person would have. Some parts would have been highly offense, while other parts would make ears perk up or hearts lean in. Rachel is full of God's wisdom and a joy to learn from. Do you ever feel heavy or anxious? Work, kids, finances, the future, the past, the state of the world can all threaten your joy, hope, and trust. From the first page of history, God has been teaching us about rest. That God rested on the 7th day has nothing to do with him ceasing to work but rather him taking up his uncontested throne to rule. Giving us a firm foundation when life spins out of control! Bible study teacher and lifelong student Rachel Booth Smith joins us to point to the who of Creation so that we can find meaning and rest for our souls. Rachel is the author of Rest Assured: What the Creation Story was Intended to Reveal about Trusting God.Support the show: https://give.moodyradio.org/fall-share?v=def&appeal=MRWM&_gl=1%2a142i9we%2a_ga%2aNTE4MTE5MmUtY2U1Yy00YmQ3LWU4MmUtNjEwYTQ5YzAyODRj%2a_ga_4WH1937046%2aMTY5NTExODEwMS4yOTkuMC4xNjk1MTE4MTAxLjYwLjAuMA..&_ga=2.197426156.215784306.1695059984-1182841406.166859587See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Jesus loves us. Though we learned this about God, we are often tempted to doubt God's love. "Why is He keeping good things from me?" "Why am I suffering so much?" "How could God love me after what I've done?" Life situations tempt us to doubt His love. Paul addresses these questions to restore our confidence in God's love. We are reminded that nothing - not even our doubts - can hinder God's love.
"Why am I facing this trial? The Bible says God is good, but what I'm going through is not good! I'm not sure how to talk to God about the things I'm feeling." What if we lose hope or reach the end of ourselves? Romans has some of the most assuring verses reminding us that our good, sovereign Father guarantees our eternal security. He is doing good in our lives no matter what evils we face.
Twenty-first-century Americans often approach Genesis asking the question, "How did it all happen?" But the ancient Israelites were concerned with different questions—questions of purpose . . . who and why. On Thursday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, Rachel Booth Smith becomes a holy eavesdropper, leaning over ancient Israelites' shoulders, listening as God reveals Himself to Israel. As we anchor ourselves in His character, we find a rest that grounds us when we're faced with the daily crises of life, big and small. This book is for all who desire to have a life of flourishing, rooted in sacred trust and rest.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Do you feel you get enough rest in the course of your day or your week? Most people would probably say no – who couldn't use more rest? What if I were to tell you that you could be at rest right now. Even in the midst of whatever you're doing at this very moment, you can enjoy rest – the way God intended it. Because true rest is different than what we generally think it means. In fact, we can go all the way back to the story of creation to learn about how God sees rest and how it can completely change the way we view and experience genuine rest. In today's episode, host Jason Wieland is joined by Rachel Booth Smith, author of the new book Rest Assured. In this conversation Rachel and Jason talk about how what the Bible teaches about rest is different than our typical understanding, the role of intention, the uniqueness of the creation story found in Genesis, the difference between forced and relaxed faith, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. It premiered in 2017 and now offers more than 380 episodes. Episodes release every Tuesday on your favorite podcast app and on the Saddleback Church YouTube Channel (https://www.youtube.com/saddleback).Resources for this episode: Rest Assured by Rachel Booth Smith - https://www.amazon.com/Rest-Assured-Creation-Intended-Trusting/dp/0802432743Related Doable Discipleship EpisodesNavigating the Bible: Genesis - https://youtu.be/ddhjMfOoasALiving With Hope in the Midst of Struggle - https://youtu.be/99Nki49V0fIThinking Differently About Shame - https://youtu.be/sqKGDjBcHHcThinking About the Fruit of the Spirit - https://youtu.be/1JPaiNnbcAs
On the seventh day of creation, God rested. But what did that mean to the people who first heard this story? How is that significant to your anxious, hurting heart today? In her latest book, Rest Assured: What the Creation Story was Intended to Reveal about Trusting God, Rachel Booth Smith shares theologically rich insights that bring you into the rest you need, the rest you crave. The rest for which you were made.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's show is totally committed to dispelling incorrect information being trumpeted from the Left. I'm certain most of our listeners are already exhausted by hearing and seeing the incessant celebrations of Leftists who are now certain Kamala Harris will be the next president. Rest Assured! The Fat Lady is a long way away from singing! Facts matter. And the facts of the condition of our nation, the sources of each of the difficulties all Americans find themselves facing daily, and the pipe dreams being sold by the U.S. Pravda are landing. But they're NOT sticking to the People! Why? Facts Matter. How many times have we told you that when you base choices on truth, they almost always work? This is our chance to live that instead of just speaking it! We go into great depth in our first hour, explaining what the Left is working so diligently to achieve. You'll hear several audio pieces that will explain that "It ain't over until it's over!" And we're NOWHERE NEAR BEING OVER!
Do you feel heavy or anxious? Work, kids, finances, the future, the past, and the state of the world can all threaten your joy, hope, and trust. Could a life of rest change everything? Moody author Rachel Booth Smith believes this is possible and is here to encourage us with her book Rest Assured: What the Creation Story Was Intended to Reveal about Trusting God. John is commending those who pray for those they see in sin, but warning them that it might be too late for some to repent. Whether this refers to an unbeliever who has finally rejected God in their heart, or a believer who will be punished by physical death - the warning to stay away from sin is serious.
John has given his testimony, and now presents a better testimony: the water, blood and Spirit. He wants us to believe that Jesus is the Son of God and received eternal life.
We are overcomers in this world through our faith in Jesus Christ. Don't believe a lie that says you are anything other than victorious through Him. Welcome to Covenant Church! I not only love people because I love God, but by loving God I demonstrate that I truly love people. When I obey his commandments, and show that they aren't burdensome, this is an act of love toward others.
Sermon for June 23, 2024 | Preaching text: Mark 4:35-41
The love of God in me is evidence of God's existence. That love sanctifies me, motivates evangelism, gives me confidence about my eternal life, and causes me to love others, even my enemies. The love that I have for my brother in Christ is an assurance of my salvation (1 John 2:7-11 - 3/3 sermon). If I am a child of God, love will manifest itself in action (1 John 3:11-18 - 5/26 sermon). We can't generate Christ-like love through our efforts, we must daily connect to the source of all love - God himself. Because God is love (v. 9).
If we are children of God, abiding in Christ and waiting expectantly for his return, we will have no reason to be ashamed or shrink back from his presence when he returns. Instead, we will be filled with confidence and anticipation at his coming.
John reminds his fellow believers that they must test the spirits that they are listening to and see if they come from God. If they deny the incarnation they are from the enemy. Although there is an enemy, we don't need to be afraid because we have someone greater on our side: the Holy Spirit.

Our love for one another is a duty and a test. It's a duty that we're commanded as christians to practice love. It'a test in that our practice of love for one another demonstrates the reality of our Christian faith. John is telling us that the command to love one another isn't an optional part of our walk with Christ
John is reminding us that those adopted into the family of God will not be comfortable in this world. Children of God should be uncomfortable in this sinful world, and often reminded that sin is a serious affront to God and contrary to the life of a child of God.
