This next composer is one of my favorites. His scores for Nickelodeon's Avatar The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are some of the most iconic animation scores for an animated series. After graduating from California Institute of Arts where he studied modern composition with a focus on computer music and sonic art, he started The Track Team with co-founder Benjamin Wynn (aka Deru). The music and sound design duo won two Emmy Awards and five nominations and worked on Dreamworks' Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. Since then, this composer has also scored the Netflix Original Film, Horse Girl. The composer is... Jeremy Zuckerman --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/composertalk/support

Sam Hughes speaks with composer Andrew Prahlow, about his recent work on Outer Wilds, his journey into music composition, and more. Andrew Prahlow's music focuses on larger-than-life, emotive soundscapes with a core of chamber-ensemble minimalism, hoping to create a sense of familiar nostalgia for the listener. He began his career in music as an intern at John Powell's studio while completing his studies at the Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television (SMPTV) Graduate Program at USC. From 2011-2014, he assisted on the music of ‘The Legend of Korra' for Jeremy Zuckerman and also on ‘Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness' for Jeremy Zuckerman and Benjamin Wynn. In 2015, his music was featured in trailers for Ridley Scott's ‘The Martian'. From 2015-2016, Andrew composed ambient guitar soundscapes for the Madden NFL franchise. In 2017, Andrew wrote an arrangement of ‘Be Our Guest' for the 2017 Academy Awards ‘Beauty and the Beast' TV spot, and the score to the Mobile VR Game of the Year, ‘Eclipse: Edge of Light'. Andrew also writes for mainstream trailer campaigns, including ‘Star Wars', ‘Avengers,' ‘Blade Runner 2049', and ‘Star Trek'. Special thanks to Callum Tennick for editing. Want to sponsor an episode? If there's any one thing we can learn from the Last Airbender movie, it's that we all make mistakes. Not colossal multi-million dollar mistakes, but mistakes at the very least. But it's like a train wreck. When my friend Tom Hall first introduced me to the music of Deru, I was immediately drawn in. It was the combination of complexity and structure that I love in ambient work, but it was also unabashedly electronic and had edge that I liked. But I got a surprised when I did a little digging around, and found out that Benjamin Wynn, the man behind Deru, was also deeply entrenched in the music-for-TV world, having done music and sound design (with his partner Jeremy Zuckerman) for Avatar - The Last Airbender, Kung-Fu Panda - Legends of Awesomeness and others. A couple of Emmys speak to the quality of that work. In addition to that (!), he is also one of the founders of The Echo Society, a composer's collective that is gaining traction by producing a concert series that pushes people's perception of classical music concert - and modern music. All of this points to an amazingly efficient music and sound producer, and one that is able to work within - and embrace - many different sound environments. In our chat, we talk about how each of these opportunities presented themselves, but also how he is able to pull off all this work, and to keep such a high level of quality. I'm a fan, but I'm also fascinated by someone with this kind of process and one that is so consistent with their work. I learned a lot in this, and I hope you do too. Enjoy!
The incredibly talented Jeremy Zuckerman provides some insight behind his amazing work on The Legend Of Korra. We delve into how Jeremy got his unconventional start in the business and went on to score one of the most successful animated shows on television with Avatar: The Last Airbender. He discusses his time schedules and process working on an animated series including recording with live musicians. We discuss how it's important to treat the subject matter as real as possible and never try to simplify emotions just because a show or film is aimed at a younger audience. Jeremy also shares a bit of what he loved (and didn't love) about the live action film adaption of The Last Airbender. A fantastic interview with a terrific composer. The secret is out! The truth about all of the crazy breaks and pauses and hiatuses The Avatar Returns has endured over the past year-and-a-half can finally be revealed. The truth is…we didn't want this to end. But end it has, and we must fight our way through the heartache and the pain to discuss, one last time, these final chapters of The Legend of Korra. Chapter 412, “Day of the Colossus” sees all our gathered heroes marshaling what resistance they can against Kuvira's Platinum Gundam of Spirity Death. There's a marriage proposal; Hayao Miyazaki makes a surprise (if short) return; and Meelo bends with something other than his butt. And then in chapter 413, appropriately titled “The Last Stand,” Bolin throws a building at Kuvira; Mako bends his shirt off; and Korra and Kuvira have possibly the most viscerally satisfying battle in the history of the series. Plus that marriage proposal leads to an actual wedding, and our beloved Avatar indulges in some very significant hand-holding. And now, at the end of all things, we finally, FINALLY try and give the extraordinary series composer Jeremy Zuckerman his due. (In case we don't make it clear in the episode, he is one of the most amazing and criminally under appreciated composers working.) Next: the shows are over but you still get one more podcast from us. Join us as we laugh, cry, and probably drink our way through a look back on the long, strange journey we've taken through these amazing shows. There could be games; we might try and stump each other with pop quizzes; it's almost guaranteed we'll argue over “Imprisoned” or “The Swamp” again. You're all invited to The Great TARP Wrap Party! The Breakdown Intro / Banter (00:00 - 07:00) Main Topic (07:00 - 1:40:35) Outro / Next (1:40:35 - 1:45:40)

In 2005, Nickelodeon premiered an animated series called Avatar: The Last Airbender, about a young boy and his friends who have to keep peace and balance in the world. It combined fantasy and martial arts, and ran for four seasons, won an Emmy and a Peabody, and in 2012, spawned a sequel called The Legend of Korra. This time, the story was about a girl, Korra, a teenager, and just as the characters were older and the world they inhabited was older, the themes of the show matured as well. In December 2014, after 4 seasons of its own, the series and franchise aired its finale. It made headlines for the final shot of the very last scene. Composer Jeremy Zuckerman used a mix of Chinese and western instruments for the series. In this episode, he deconstructs the music he wrote that scene, reflects on its significance, and also what it felt like to close the curtain on a franchise he'd been working on over the course of twelve years of his life.
