The E. Kong Yick building houses the only pan-Asian Pacific American community-based museum in the country, The Wing Luke Museum. And it's an anchor in Seattle's Chinatown-International District. The Wing began in an old mechanic's garage, exhibiting old folk art relics from Asia. This episode tells the story of how The Wing transformed from a traditional museum into a BIPOC-owned building, community, and movement … and how people responded when it was threatened.  *** This episode of 10,000 Things is about the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle. It was recorded before 26 members of its 52-person staff walked out on May 22nd , in protest of a new exhibition entitled “Confronting Hate Together.” While leadership continues to work to resolve the dispute with those on strike, as I talk to you on June 18th, the museum remains closed. If you'd like to know more, we're providing links to KUOW's coverage in our episode notes.  As you're about to hear, The Wing is a beloved Seattle institution that has been no stranger to turmoil and disruption. Regardless, its strong relationship to the community has allowed it to grow and thrive. If you want to learn more: Wing Luke exhibit shows how Black, Asian, and Jewish Seattleites confront hate together  With 'heart, sensitivity, and delicacy,' Wing Luke Museum plans to re-open after staff walkout  Seattle's Wing Luke Museum closed after staff say exhibit 'frames Palestinian liberation' as antisemitism    Ten Thousand Things is produced by KUOW in Seattle. Some trees are just special. One tree in Seattle's Chinatown-International District has reached legendary status. The loquat tree is an artifact of the Engs, a pioneer Chinese-American family who planted the fruit seed in their front yard. The tree has thrived for over 60 years, nourishing the family and the community. Now, it stands as a legacy tree in the C-ID, accessible to a new generation and the tree's arboreal descendants grow all over the city, forming their own non-human diaspora.   Ten Thousand Things is produced by KUOW in Seattle.

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2022 3:31

Artist, poet, and activist Dougie Padilla recommends a visit to ArtReach St. Croix in Stillwater to see the exhibit “Jim Denomie, Sweet Dreams,” which runs through May 7. Denomie passed away March 1. Padilla, his longtime friend, said Denomie was a “truly brilliant painter” and “a sweet and gentle man, a blessing to many in many different communities.” “Jim was also the master of his own style of portraiture, and of what can only be called Dreamworld painting. With his own unique palette of blues and purples, pinks and oranges, greens and golds, Jim told stories that came out of some deep underground stream from far down inside his psyche, in the psyche of his Ojibwe ancestors,” Padilla said. “It penetrates the heart softly, even while shaking the very ground beneath our feet.” The show in Stillwater includes portraits and character studies. Denomie painted figures with antlers and rabbit ears, riding on horseback. “Are they leaving this world headed for the next? Are they already in the next world looking back, waiting for us? Named almost a year ago, this exhibit “Sweet Dreams” not only foreshadows Jim's leaving us here on this troubled Earth. It takes us along with him for the first mile or two of his ride home,” Padilla added. Eric Heukeshoven, a jazz musician and composer who teaches at St. Mary's University, plans to drive from Winona to Rochester to attend “A Tribute to John Paulson: Jazz at 70.” Paulson plays saxophone and flute, and he'll perform original compositions and jazz standards. The rest of the quintet has musicians drawn from Rochester, Winona, and environs: Cliff Jack on guitar, Larry Price on piano, Miles Johnston on drums, and Robert S. P. Gardner on bass. The Rochester Chamber Music Society event is Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester. Masks are optional, and the show is free.  Don't see video? The album describes learning the diagnosis, the darkness and uncertainty of the heart surgeries and, ultimately, the love and joy of family. Alyssa is now 6. Don't see video? In this, our first episode of the new academic year, we're looking at politics in Russia. Alexei Navalny – who hit the headlines around the world last year by surviving an attempt to assassinate him by lacing his underpants with Novichok, and who now languishes in prison 100km east of Moscow – is Russia's best known opposition leader. Indeed, a new book about Navalny's life and activism describes him as ‘the main political counterforce in the country' and ‘its second most important politician'. So who is Alexei Navalny? What does his current predicament say about the state of Russian politics? And what chance is there that he – or anyone else – might be able to lead Russia towards a more democratic future? Our host Professor Alan Renwick is joined by one of the new book's authors Dr Ben Noble, Associate Professor in Russian Politics at UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies, and Dr Katerina Tertychnaya, Lecturer in Comparative Politics in the UCL Department of Political Science and expert on Russian politics, who is now leading a major research project on ‘Non-Violent Repression in Electoral Autocracies'.Mentioned in this episode:Navalny: Putin's Nemesis, Russia's Future? Watch on Youtube! Listen on Amazon Prime / Audible Our theme music is Just for Fun courtesy of Ketsa. TODAY'S RECIPE: INDIAN-ISH NACHOS WITH CHEDDAR, BLACK BEANS & CHUTNEY by Priya & Ritu Krishna INGREDIENTS For the Cilantro Chutney: 1 large bunch fresh cilantro, leaves and tender stems roughly chopped (about 4 cups). 1 small Indian green chile or serrano chile, stem removed and roughly chopped. 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice (from about 1 lime), plus more as needed. ¼ teaspoon granulated sugar. ¾ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed. For the nachos: 1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained Kosher salt. 1 (8-ounce) bag white corn tortilla chips, preferably unsalted. 1 medium red onion, finely chopped. 2 medium Roma tomatoes, cored and finely chopped. 4 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese (about 1 pound). ¼ cup store-bought tamarind sauce (or ¼ cup date syrup or maple syrup whisked with 1 tablespoon lime juice). For the Chhonk: ¼ cup ghee or olive oil. 2 tablespoons cumin seeds Pinch of red chile powder, such as ground cayenne Greek yogurt, for serving (optional). PREPARATION Heat the oven to 425 degrees. Make the chutney: In a blender, combine the cilantro, green chile, lime juice, sugar and salt and blend until smooth. If the mixture is too thick to blend, add up to 3 tablespoons water, a tablespoon at a time, to get it going. Taste and adjust the salt and lime juice, if needed. Set aside. In a medium bowl, lightly mash the beans with a fork (this is so they won’t roll off the chips), and season them with salt. On a foil-lined 13-by-18-inch sheet pan, arrange half the chips, followed by half the beans, onions, tomatoes and cheese (in that order). Repeat to make a second layer. Bake for 7 to 10 minutes on the highest rack of the oven, until the cheese is melted and bubbling. While the nachos are in the oven, make the chhonk: In a small pan or a butter warmer over medium-high, heat the ghee. Once the ghee melts (or the oil begins to shimmer), add the cumin seeds and cook until they start to sputter and brown, about 15 seconds. Immediately remove the pan from the heat and stir in the red chile powder. Set aside. Evenly drizzle the cilantro chutney and the tamarind sauce on top of the nachos, followed by the chhonk. Add a few dollops of the Greek yogurt, if using.

The most important amendment, which appeared at the last moment, proposed a "reset" of Putin's presidential term limit, thereby allowing him to run for the presidency again in 2024.Why did Putin need to revise the constitution, how long has the Kremlin been planning this move, and how has it been influenced by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic? In the first of a new series of PONARS Eurasia Podcasts, Masha Lipman chats with Ben Noble of University College London, Nikolai Petrov of Chatham House, and Henry Hale of George Washington University to learn more.

Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enWe've known it was coming since January when Vladimir Putin warned the nation, but now it's moving at full throttle and threatens to inflict untold damage. No, it's not the coronavirus — it's the other calamity currently unfolding in Russia: a massive campaign to rewrite the Constitution so that Vladimir Putin's presidency might continue until 2036. When this episode was recorded, all that stood between major constitutional reforms and enactment were a ruling from Russia's Constitutional Court and a nationwide vote that draws the support of at least half the Russians who bother to vote. Federal and regional legislators have moved with lightning speed in the past week, all under a cloud of dubious legality. To find out more about what laws are being bent or trampled in the campaign to allow Vladimir Putin another two presidential terms, “The Naked Pravda” turned to three scholars in Russia and the UK. In this episode: (3:24) Ben Noble, an assistant professor in Russian politics at the University College London, explains that Russian lawmakers moved so quickly with the Kremlin's constitutional amendments because this was a top personal priority for Vladimir Putin. (7:15) Ella Paneyakh, a sociologist at the National Research University Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, argues that legislators waited until the last minute to move forward with many amendments, polluting the legislation with a lot of “bad law.” (14:30) Jane Henderson, an academic lawyer at King's College London and an expert in Russia's legal system, breaks down the ways to revise Russia's Constitution and the pitfalls of the theoretical checks and balances put in place. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Fridays. Today on the show, I sit down with Ben Noble and Steve Sizemore, the two gentleman that I will be playing with on the run of Dilana shows in June. It was a cool hang because other than the group messages we've had, the three of us have never met. We got together, rehearsed some tunes for a few hours then sat down to have a chat. It was a cool experience to play with the two dudes in the same situation as me having also just met Dilana and been picked by her to go on tour. This was a good hang with some good humans and I am so looking forward to the shows in June! We talk about their time at NAMM 2019, how hey met and their musical backgrounds. In today's episode, Kevin spoke to Ben Noble, a lecturer in Russian politics at University College London in the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, who researches legislatures in non-democracies.In this interview, Kevin asked Ben what he means when he says Russian members of parliament “can serve as pawns in proxy skirmishes between non-legislative actors.” Ben also talked about how he gets all his information about bureaucratic infighting at the Duma, and what actors and agencies tend to win these clashes of politics by other means. Finally, he discussed the likely consequences of the partial media boycott on the State Duma announced after the Slutsky ruling last Wednesday. I refer to two texts by Ben in this podcast.
