Over the last month the news coverage out of Los Angeles has been terrifying and heart breaking. A number of fires, driven by the wind, have claimed lives and tens of thousands of homes. Lives are up ended and rebuilding will take years or more. Brewers are used to stepping up in these situations, be it fires, hurricanes, or other natural disasters, there's a good bet that within a few days of something terrible happening, a collaboration beer will pop up. Brewers anywhere can make it and then donate processed to relief efforts or specific charities. Common Space Brewing brewing stepped up this time with the We Love LA beer, and brewery co-founder Brent Knapp is here to talk about the origins of the beer and how folks can help. He's joined by Brian Avery of Bravery Brewing, who is also the president of the LA Brewers Guild. Both joined me via zoom. EPISODE 61 - “FAVORITE CLASSIC FILMS OF THE 1960s” - 11/11/2024 The decade of the 1960s was an exciting time in filmmaking. Mike Nichol's The Graduate from 1967 is a romantic comedy unlike any other, and the fact that it still holds up over half a century later is a testament to that fact. In a world where comedies require a joke a minute, The Graduate isn't afraid to let itself breathe for the sake of servicing a better story. But not every romantic comedy can conclude with "and they lived happily ever after..."The Graduate stars Anne Bancroft, Dustin Hoffman, Katharine Ross, William Daniels, Murray Hamilton, Brian Avery, and Buck Henry. In this special two-part episode of Betcha Didn't Know That, Mandy and Kevin transport you via discussion and soundscape back to 1805 where the greatest naval battle in the history of sailing ships was waged; The Battle of Trafalgar. They discuss the horrific conditions of the average sailor, the glory of victory, and the commanders of the battle, including the British hero, Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson. In Part One, they focus on the run-up to the battle, the main antagonists, some of the tactics Napoleon employed to outwit his British enemies, and how the British hoped to destroy the Franco/Spanish Combined Fleet. In Part Two, they really get into the battle, the unique British commanders, the embattled French commander, which side had the advantage, and who was woefully unprepared for battle. Feel the spray of the waves on your cheeks, the shudder of your ribs as cannons go off, and join them for one of their most ambitious episodes yet. Each episode is filled with fascinating information and entertaining myth-busting. Carolyn Bendall, Fashion Critic and blogger (www.carolynbendall.com), discusses subjects, trends, or products within the beauty and fashion industry, focusing on Your True Colours, and how it applies to you, the individual. Brian Avery and his wife, Marina, have three children with stunning academic credentials, each tracking toward rewarding careers. After entertaining questions about how their children performed so well, and listening to dismissals that not everyone can be a genius, the author is sharing the approach he and his wife took. He is an environmental manager for a steel company in Alabama. Both he and his wife have a formal education in engineering. The book, Raising Genius, focuses on preparing children for a globally competitive economy wherein specific disciplines are highly rewarded. Helping prepare children for options in tomorrow’s world is the key objective. With a little effort, guidance, and assistance on your part, life options for your child can be dramatically improved. Raising Genius is an intentional misnomer. Many might dismiss your child’s academic and career success as the result of having a genius IQ, but this is not usually the case. Often what we see as “genius” is the result of focused and applied work over time. In Raising Genius, the author provides methods, guidance, and strategy to help parents set their children up for academic and career success … success that will enhance options for your child. http://www.amazon.com/Raising-Genius-Brian-Avery/dp/1631358871
