This is a preview of a premium episode from our Patreon feed, Paid Costly For Me! Head over to Patreon.com/PodCastyForMe to hear more for just $5 a month. We return to our very slow trip through the films of Sergio Leone with 1971's DUCK, YOU SUCKER!, also known as A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE, also known as GIÙ LA TESTA, a story of the Mexican Revolution starring Rod Steiger and James Coburn. It's a real humdinger of an episode, as Jake's allergies flare up while he tells a long story about some unpleasant men at the barbershop, Ian explains the Mexican Revolution, and we both read passages from Frantz Fanon. Enjoy!

EPISODE 76 - “MEMORABLE OSCAR SPEECHES OF THE GOLDEN ERA OF HOLLYWOOD” - 2/24/2025 Winning an Oscar is a dream for most people who work in Hollywood. But you can't just win the Oscar, you have to have a good speech once your name is called and you head to the podium. There have been some great ones — OLIVIA COLEMAN's funny and cheeky speech hit the right tone and who can forget JACK PALANCE's one-arm push-ups or CUBA GOODING's exuberance? There have also been some bad ones — don't we all still cringe a little at SALLY FIELDS' “You like me” speech? As we prepare to celebrate the 97th annual Academy Award ceremony, Steve and Nan look back on some of their favorite Oscar speeches and why they resonate. Dana and Tom revisit In the Heat of the Night (1967): directed by Norman Jewison, written by Sterling Silliphant, score by Quincy Jones, starring Sidney Poitier, Rod Steiger, Warren Oates, and Lee Grant.Plot Summary: In the Heat of the Night (1967) is a taut, incisive drama that explores the collision of justice and racial prejudice in the Deep South. Sidney Poitier stars as Virgil Tibbs, a Philadelphia detective who reluctantly teams up with a bigoted small-town sheriff, played by Rod Steiger, to solve a murder in Sparta, Mississippi.Director Norman Jewison builds a gripping procedural around the tension between these two men, each forced to confront his own biases in the face of a shared goal. With its evocative cinematography, unforgettable moments of confrontation, and Quincy Jones' soulful score, In the Heat of the Night transcends the confines of a murder mystery. It is a film of deep moral resonance, one that holds a mirror to America's struggles with race, power, and reconciliation—while delivering a narrative as electrifying as it is humane.Chapters:00:00 Introduction and Welcome01:14 Cast and Recognition for In the Heat of the Night03:23 Relationship(s) to In the Heat of the Night07:21 What is In the Heat of the Night About?14:13 Plot Summary for In the Heat of the Night17:06 First Break17:55 Ask Dana Anything18:40 The Stanley Rubric - Legacy22:05 The Stanley Rubric - Impact/Significance25:07 The Stanley Rubric - Novelty34:07 Second Break34:17 In Memoriam35:20 The Stanley Rubric - Classicness41:49 The Stanley Rubric - Rewatchability44:23 The Stanley Rubric - Audience Score and Final Total46:12 Remaining Questions for In the Heat of the Night48:44 Where the List Stands at the End of Season 552:54 Remaining Thoughts for Season 558:32 CreditsYou can also find this episode in full video on YouTube. You can now follow us on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, or TikTok (@gmoatpodcast).For more on the original episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/in-the-heat-of-the-night-1967For more on the episode, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/in-the-heat-of-the-night-1967-revisitFor the entire rankings list so far, go to: https://www.ronnyduncanstudios.com/post/greatest-movie-of-all-time-listKeywords:In the Heat of the Night, race relations, Sidney Poitier, film analysis, classic films, podcast, movie review, Best Picture, 1967, cultural impactRonny Duncan Studios

Chairs rock on their own, furious flies fill a room, fathers get mad and walls bleed...but will the Lutzes listen to what Rod Steiger heard early on and "GET OUT"? In any case, for God's sake, download the 620th edition of Have You Ever Seen as Stuart Rosenberg's fairly-effective horror show is discussed in fairly humorous detail. A slightly polish but lovingly crafted podcast, but over long, pretentious, and padded with irrelevant subplots, and one that finally gives birth to a mouse of an idea, that Mike and Conny are much alike. Its true subject matter is no more then male bonding between two boastful and unlovely characters, and its real purpous seems to have been to bring together on air Mike and Conny. Conny perhaps remembering Bogart's not dissimilar duel with Rod Steiger in "The Harder They Fall" -(1956) gos for a minimalist approach, Mike yells a lot. - Leslie Halliwell (From beyond the grave)

Unclear and Present Danger

On this week's episode of the podcast, we watched Tim Burton's 1996 sci-fi comedy Mars Attacks!, starring Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Michael J. Fox, Martin Short Pam Grier, Rod Steiger, Jim Brown, Lukas Haas, Danny DeVito and Natalie Portman.Mars Attacks! was based off of the 1960s-era trading card series by Topps. In the series, Earth is invaded by cruel, hideous Martians who hope to colonize the planet and enslave its population. In the movie, Earth is invaded by cruel hideous Martians. But they don't seem to want to colonize the planet as much as engage in wanton destruction for its own sake. To the extent that the film has a plot, it follows several groups of people. There is President James Dale, played by Nicholson, his wife and daughter. There is a young donut shop employee and his family in Nevada. There is an aging boxer turned casino employee, his ex-wife and their children. And there are a pair of talk show hosts. The film shows first contact followed by the Martian war on Earth. Most of the characters are either weak and incompetent, like President Dale and the American military, vain and oblivious, like the various members of the media, or outright rubes, like some of the more ordinary people in the film. The Martians rampage across the country, killing everyone they see including the president and the first lady. They are eventually stopped when two characters, the young donut shop employee and his grandmother, discover that the yodeling on Slim Whitman's “Indian Love Call” is enough to cause their heads to explode. They defeat the Martian invasion and are awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their exploits. The taglines for Mars Attacks were “Nice planet. We'll take it!” and “Yikes! They've landed!”Mars Attacks is available for rent or purchase either Amazon or Apple TV.Episodes come out every two weeks so we'll see you then with an episode on Shadow Conspiracy, a 1997 conspiracy thriller directed by George P. What's that, by the side of the road? Is that a... vomiting nun, played by star of stage and screen Irene Dailey? And what's that, up in the sewing room? Is that a... priest covered in flies, played by Oscar-winner Rod Steiger? However you feel about it, there's no question that Stuart Rosenberg's O.G. THE AMITYVILLE HORROR (1979) is an iconic launch of a never-ending franchise, one that's produced more clunkers than most—but which seems to have legs like no other. With '70s icons Margot Kidder and James Brolin along for the ride, plus plenty of ferrofluid and a requisite microfiche scene, we don't need to be told twice to GET OUT. Then that script would go on to become Deep Blue Sea.There were challenges, though: should the tone be Jaws-like? Or Jurassic Park? Or Alien? And then the very late need for more footage to be shot too.In the case of 1984, adapted from George Orwell's novel of the same name, time was a luxury they didn't have. And, for six weeks of shooting, a co-star for John Hurt was missing too. Sean Connery turned the film down, Rod Steiger was rejected. The author Jacob Bacharach returns for a show about Ridley Scott's latest, the 200 million dollar epic Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Vanessa Kirby. History nerds, YouTube film cranks and the Roman statue bluechecks on Twitter are up in arms about the latest from the Riddler, for straying too far from the real history and most egregiously for hiring their beloved Joker to portray their beloved Emperor of France as a cucked loser. Jacob and I highly enjoyed it as old Hollywood spectacle and as a strange historical comedy about a horny weirdo, hilariously sold to the masses as a badass action film with Black Sabbath in the trailer.  We also compare this Napoleon to previous attempts to depict him in cinema, with special emphasis on 1970's Waterloo, a spectacular and extremely expensive recreation of that fateful battle starring Rod Steiger and Christopher Plummer as the Duke of Wellington, literally a co-production between Dino De Laurentiis and the Soviet Union!  It's fashionable in some circles to complain about Ridley Scott but we discuss some movies of his we like, our hopes for the extended version, and discuss some fun facts about the Napoleonic Era including his horny letters to Josephine and an explanation of the French Revolutionary Calendar. Plus: Napoelon Musk, finally facing his Waterloo after an assault on advertisers at a New York Times summit. Hollywood's Oscar ceremony is like the Super Bowl for cinema lovers. But beyond the clothes, the speeches, and the musical numbers, it's all about the winners. And some leave us scratching our heads. Did How Green Was My Valley really deserve the Best Picture Oscar over Citizen Kane in 1941? How did CARY GRANT and MYRNA LOY never win competitive Oscars? And who the hell is LUISE RAINER, and how did she rob IRENE DUNNE and BARBARA STANWYCK of their Oscars? Join STEVE CUBINE, writer of the Emmy-Award winning series Break A Hip, and NAN MCNAMARA, renowned actress and director, as they discuss some of the most baffling Oscar fumbles in the history of the Academy Awards. CORRECTION: In this episode, it was erroneously mentioned that Dustin Hoffman lost the 1967 Best Actor Oscar to John Wayne when in reality, Hoffman lost to Rod Steiger for In The Heat Of The Night. (Hoffman lost to John Wayne two years later for his performance in Midnight Cowboy!) ___________________________________________ Sources: Inside Oscar: The Unofficial History of the Academy Awards (1986), by Mason Wiley and Damien Bona; They Didn't Win The Oscar (1980), by Bill Libby; The Real Oscar: The Story Behind The Academy Awards (1981), by Peter H. Marty (1955) is the poignant, simple character study of a lonely, unmarried, lovelorn middle-aged, 34 year old son who works as a Bronx butcher and still lives with his love-smothering mother. By film's end, he and another homely 29 year old Brooklyn schoolteacher and female wallflower are liberated - both are triumphant over their respective limitations. The film's screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky transformed his own original teleplay into a successful major motion picture - and the modest film remains one of the best examples of the cinematization of a television play. (The 48-minute TV comedy-drama was originally presented on NBC-TV's "Philco-Goodyear Playhouse" series on May 24, 1953 as a 60-minute broadcast, with leads Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand, during a period now recognized as the "Golden Age of Television." It received zero nominations during the Emmys that year.) It was the only film based on a TV drama to ever win Best Picture. As a feature film, it was one of the biggest 'sleepers' in Hollywood history, from the independent production company of Harold Hecht and actor Burt Lancaster (Hecht-Lancaster). A modest, black and white film in an era of wide-screen color epics, its critical acclaim and box-office success were phenomenal - its $340,000 production budget yielded over $5 million in gross proceeds. And it was the second Best Picture Oscar winner to also win the Golden Palm (Palme d'Or) at Cannes - The Lost Weekend (1945) was the first.Marty was nominated for eight Academy Awards - and was awarded four - Best Picture!, Best Actor (character actor Ernest Borgnine in a role quite different from his menacing, sadistic villains or murderous 'heavies' in From Here to Eternity (1953) and Bad Day at Black Rock (1955)), Best Director (Delbert Mann for his debut film), and Best Screenplay (Paddy Chayefsky). It was also the shortest Best Picture winner at 91 minutes.Like “On the Waterfront,” this film demonstrates that story, performance, and direction always count. Neither color nor new projection and sound techniques could make “Marty” any better than it is now. Although filmed on a modest budget (reportedly about $300,000), there is no evidence of any stinting in the production values, a factor the industry will note.Despite the picture's north Bronx locale and concern with an Italian-American family, the theme is universal and many viewers may experience a degree of identification. It's a quiet, simple story. While lacking in general excitement, it's sparked with sufficient comedy.Basically, it's the story of a boy and girl, both of whom consider themselves misfits in that they are unable to attract members of the opposite sex. The boy, sensitively played by Ernest Borgnine, is a friendly, mild-mannered guy in his thirties who feels he hasn't the handsomeness or the necessary savoire faire to impress girls. He is constantly needled by his mother, with whom he lives, and the customers at the butcher store where he works, to get married. The girl, beautifully played by Betsy Blair, is a plain schoolteacher whom everybody is always trying to fix up with dates. Pair come together at a boy-meets-girl dance where Miss Blair is ditched by her blind date. A blossoming romance brings both out of their shells as each is able to pour out pent-up emotions to the other.

On Wednesday March 12th, 1952 at 9:30PM eastern time, Bogie and Bacall guest-starred on Bing Crosby's CBS Chesterfield Show. Two days later, Bogart's next film, Deadline – U.S.A premiered in New York City. Bogie plays Ed Hutcheson, a newspaper editor who exposes a gangster's crimes, while also trying to reconcile with his ex-wife. His performance was well-received. Bogart and Bacall's appearance on The Bing Crosby Show pulled a rating of 9.1. On August 23rd, 1952 Lauren Bacall gave birth to their second child, a daughter, Leslie Howard Bogart, named in honor of actor Leslie Howard who got Bogart his first major film role in The Petrified Forest. The next day Bogart spoke to George Fisher about the experience. Both were soon back working as Bogart made Battle Circus and Bacall made How To Marry a Millionaire. Bogart's next big role and final Academy Award nomination came in an adaptation of Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1951 novel, The Caine Mutiny. Bogart plays Captain Queeg. In 1954 Bogart starred opposite Audrey Hepburn and the just-heard William Holden in Billy Wilder's Sabrina. Bogart and Holden are brothers — Linus and David Larabee, competing for the love of Sabrina Fairchild. Bogart agreed to it on a handshake with Wilder, although the script wasn't finished. It was not a happy set. Bogart didn't get along with Holden nor Hepburn, and didn't like Wilder's hands-on approach. There were also numerous last-minute script changes. Bogart later said “I got sick and tired of who gets Sabrina.” But the film proved to be a hit. The New York Times particularly praised Bogart's performance. In the mid-1950s Bogart and Bacall's social circle began to be jokingly known as the "Holmby Hills Rat Pack." The original members included Frank Sinatra, pack master; Judy Garland, first vice-president; Sid Luft, Judy's husband, the cage master; agent Swifty Lazar, recording secretary; novelist Nathaniel Benchley pack historian; and Bacall, den mother. Bogart simultaneously made The Barefoot Contessa opposite Rita Hayworth and Sinatra's ex-wife Ava Gardner. Then in 1955 he made We're No Angels, The Left Hand of God, and The Desperate Hours. Just before Christmas in 1955, Bogart was honored with a roast at the Friar's Club. But by then Bogart's persistent cough and difficulty eating became too serious to ignore. He went for a battery of tests in January of 1956. The results were bleak: He had esophageal cancer. He still managed to make his final film, The Harder They Fall opposite Rod Steiger. Bogart plays a newspaper man turned boxing PR writer, bent on exposing the corruption he sees. Critics gave the film, and his performance, especially considering his condition glowing reviews. This is the last scene Humphrey Bogart ever did in any film. On March 1st, 1956 Humphrey Bogart had surgery to remove his esophagus, two lymph nodes and a rib. It was unsuccessful. Chemotherapy followed. He had another surgery in November. Although he became too weak to walk up and down stairs, he joked despite the pain: "Put me in the dumbwaiter and I'll ride down to the first floor in style. Frank Sinatra, Katharine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy visited him on January 13th, 1957. In a later interview, Hepburn said: Spence patted him on the shoulder and said, "Goodnight, Bogie." Bogie turned his eyes to Spence very quietly and with a sweet smile covered Spence's hand with his own and said, "Goodbye, Spence." Spence's heart stood still. He understood. Bogart lapsed into a coma and died the following day, January 14th, 1957, twenty days after his fifty-seventh birthday. At the time of his death he weighed only eighty pounds. His funeral was held at All Saints Episcopal Church. It seemed like all of Hollywood came to mourn his passing. Spencer Tracy was to give the eulogy, but he was too moved to do so. John Huston spoke instead.
