Here is a “Sunny Song”, wherein the fleeting sunlight is a dappled reminder of the evanescence of existence. They're all gone now: Bill Evans (piano), Tony Bennett (vocals), Henry Mancini (Composer), and Johnny Mercer (Lyricist), but their beautiful creation lives on to remind us to gather our rosebuds while we may.Sadness, and gratitude run in equal measure throughout all of the song's manifestations. The title itself derives from an 1896 poem by Ernest Dowson, taken from the Roman poet, Horace, whose latin translates as:“The brief sum of life forbids us the hope of enduring long;” The film for which Mancini and Mercer furnished this deathless song, was so tragic in its portrayal of addiction, that, even as a 10 year old, I mourned for the hopelessness of Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick's doomed romance that should have produced nothing but happiness, but brought only sorrow. In the magician's hands of Bill Evans, the chordal melody seems to waft in the breeze, and Tony Bennett's voice, never more supple, interprets the wistfulness of unfulfilled longing with a seasoned perfection. The results: a collaborative triumph. Tony was quoted as saying that their recordings were “the most prestigious thing I ever did”. Quite a statement from the acknowledged master.

A movie that despite it being made almost 70 years ago still bites as hard as it did then. A brilliant movie about the influence of the media and the disdain some of the people in power have for the people.  Dave loves getting into another black and white film and enjoys another opportunity to se Lee Remick but captivated the great performance of Andy Griffith and the movies brilliant screenplay.

For their Politics-related "Suggestion Box", Madeline, Emilio, and Julian invite social media professional and film lover Maggie Hill to a conversation about Elia Kazan's 'A Face In The Crowd', a film from 1957 whose observations about television, mass persuasion, and political ambition seem more relevant today than ever.  Emilio starts the discussion with how the filmmakers' personal and professional experiences with the Hollywood blacklist most likely influenced this cynical look at American institutions.  Madeline notes how the film's central figure Lonesome Rhodes is wildly different than the wholesome persona the actor who plays him, Andy Griffith, would eventually cultivate on his beloved eponymous TV show.  Julian sees the ripples of this film in several other films about fame and personal connection.  Maggie sees the film's female lead Marcia and her ambition as the skeleton key to a deeper understanding of the film.  These, and many other observations, ground a discussion about 'A Face In The Crowd' and its place among the more interesting and enduring films to emerge from the 1950s Hollywood.          Maggie Hill is a writer/director/producer whose thoughtful content about media can be found on the socials: @themaggiehillIf you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? As we got further away from WW2, and the Cold War began to rise up prominently, there was a cynicism across the land that influenced the content of many Hollywood movies. It was the decade that sparked masterpieces like “Sunset Boulevard,” “All About Eve,” “From Here To Eternity,” “Cat On A Hot Tin Roof,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “Anatomy of a Murder,” “ Strangers on a Train,” “Shane,” and “High Noon.” Listen as Steve and Nan talk about some special 1950s films that inspire them. Legends has reached that fateful number - Six Hundred Sixty-Six - and we're celebrating with an appropriately devilish movie. After his wife delivers a stillborn baby, an American diplomat adopts an orphan. Then, a series of mysterious circumstances lead him to suspect the boy may be the Antichrist. Starting Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, David Warner, Billie Whitelaw, and Harvey Stephens as Damien, directed by Richard Donner, the 1976 film was a box office hit that spawned multiple sequels and a TV series. More recently, a direct remake of the first film was released in 2006 and a TV series, Damien, aired in 2016. We're going back to the film that started it all, as it was foretold. "The Omen" skillfully taps into religious horror, exploring themes of evil, destiny, and the fear of the unknown. The use of religious symbols and dark prophecies adds a layer of terror that continues to captivate audiences.  The film capitalizes on the fear of what lies beyond our understanding, where the supernatural and the religious intersect. It's a psychological horror that delves into the darkest corners of our collective fears."The Omen" centers around Robert Thorn, played by Gregory Peck, an American ambassador living in London. When his wife, Katherine Thorn, portrayed by Lee Remick, gives birth to a stillborn child, Robert is convinced by a priest to secretly adopt an orphaned baby, Damien, who mysteriously appears in its place.Little Damien, played by Harvey Stephens, soon becomes the center of supernatural occurrences and eerie deaths, prompting Robert to investigate the origins of this malevolent child. As he delves deeper, he uncovers a web of biblical prophecies, sinister forces, and an impending apocalyptic doom.Check out the merch:  http://shop.backinthedaypodcast.comFriends of the Show1 Man Mafia (twitch.tv/1man_mafia)Jayke The Gamer God (twitch.tv/JaykeTheGamerGod)IB Best Gaming (https://www.tiktok.com/@ibbestgaming)Intro for the shopSupport the show'Beavis and Butt-head' Cover art created by Joe Crawford

The movie features one of the best jump scares in cinema history. The original production starred Lee Remick and Robert Duvall as Susy and Roat, respectively. The story revolves around Susy, a blind woman who lives alone in her Greenwich Village apartment, and Roat, a creepy intruder who wants to find a doll filled with heroin that her husband accidentally brought home. Roat and his two cronies play games with Susy, but she ultimately prevails with a bit of courage and some help from her young neighbor, Gloria. Remick's performance earned her a Tony Award nomination, and the play was quickly adapted into a feature film by producer Mel Ferrar (who was also Hepburn's husband at the time). We believe The Omen is one of the few horror films that finds itself across everyone's top 10-20 horror films of all time - it is in our top 5 for sure - AND - it extends an olive branch to the non-horror mainstream audiences. The kills are memorable, the religious and apocalyptic implications can't be ignored and well, the movie just forebodes end-times and the antichrist's coming better than any movie? How do we rate The Omen? [ For full episode catalogue please subscribe to our Patreon at Patreon.com/BestActress ] NEW EPISODE ALERT - The year is 1963 and the nominees are: Anne Bancroft - The Miracle Worker Bette Davis - Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Katharine Hepburn - Long Day's Journey into Night Geraldine Page - Sweet Bird of Youth Lee Remick - Days of Wine and Roses - In 1963 Bette Davis was odds on favourite to win her third Oscar and become the first actor to have three for her performance in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane. However on Oscar night Davis famously lost to Anne Bancroft for her physically demanding role playing Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker. To add salt in the wounds her on-screen (and allegedly off-screen) enemy Joan Crawford took to the podium to accept the award on Bancroft's behalf. It was viewed as a petty act of revenge toward Davis and to the Academy for not being nominated for Jane. Crawford also allegedly actively campaigned against Davis to ensure her loss. This was definitively a juicy year! You can't really talk about Bancroft's win without talking about the infamous feud between Davis and Crawford. Others nominated were Katharine Hepburn, Geraldine Page, and Lee Remick. This year really came down to Davis vs. Bancroft in our opinion. Listen to our new episode as we discuss! Espresso fueled quick review synopsis. Seven more 70's movies to review for you today. Let's begin with Lee Remick, some Fonda's and Paul Newman in the film adaptation of Ken Kesey's (Sometimes a great notion 1972) The review will be a breeze and we'll all agree because this story isn't dark or complex in any way. Next up is an even more light hearted romp about a scared teens journey to try to get an abortion. (To find a man 1972) is another film we all completely agree on and there is zero conflict. Do I have to say it “Sarcasm.” I will say that we all agree that Lloyd Bridges is superb at playing peeps engaging in substance abuse. (Tomorrow 1972) is such a fast paced thrill ride of an adaptation of William Faulkner's novel, it's just a flippin blur of excitement. Next up I wonder where in heck Rosiland Russel is in Lucille Ball's musical interpretation of (Mame1975), Also V shows us up again with their stellar research, and that's not sarcasm, no more sarcasm. Here we are now in the year 1975 with rad director Arthur Penn's (Night Moves), does that title work at all, I don't think we discussed it, does it ALL take place at night? Let's change it to Gene Hackman walks around. (Movie Movie 1978) was a fun time for me especially because I new nothing going in and did not get the huge duh of a context clue from the title, but in my defense many titles as just stated can be quite vague or meaningless. Art Carney and George C are here along with Brad from Rocky horror. Ok finally today your decade under the influence crew wraps it up with our amazing review of 1980's (Loving Couples). We got a goofy James Coburn here along with Shirley MacLaine and Janet from rocky horror. What happens when 2 cheating couples go to same resort? We hope you enjoy our offering. Plz give us all the stars and write us a review, why not? Thanks for listening.

Stefanie Powers began her career at age 15, dancing for famed Broadway choreographer, Jerome Robbins. She was put under contract to Columbia Pictures in the final years of the Hollywood Star system. While under contract, she appeared in 15 of the 24 motion pictures she has made, co-starring with screen legends such as John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, David Niven, Roger Moore, Bing Crosby, Lee Remick, James Caan and Sammy Davis, Jr. Her first television series, “The Girl from U.N.C.L.E,” marked a milestone in U.S. television's history as the first hour long series featuring a female in the leading role. Her television career includes seven mini-series, over 55 television shows, 36 movies for television and the long running “Hart to Hart” starring opposite Robert Wagner. She became a member of the Screen Writers' Guild of America in the 1980s and has produced several of the screenplays she has written. Her writing has extended itself to a memoir called “One from the Hart.” Throughout her career she has never neglected her theatrical roots. Among other musical performances, she appeared in the UK in the West End production of “The King and I,” which also toured the United States for ten months. While appearing in a production of “Love Letters” in the Middle East, she received a request form dear friend Valerie Harper asking her to take over the role of Tallulah Bankhead in the play “Looped.” “Looped is about the encounter between the infamous actress Tallulah Bankhead re-recording a line of dialogue for the 1965 film “Die! Die! My Darling!,” the last film Ms. Bankhead would ever make. Ironically, Stefanie co-starred in the film “Die! Die! My Darling!” with Miss Bankhead. She is founder and president of the William Holden Wildlife Foundation, established in 1982 to continue and to further her long-time partner's conservation work in East Africa after his death. Videos, excited faces and soft bans on Instagram, to name a few. To help we welcome Josh Martin and Kat Whitacre of "Uncomfortable Brunch" to the table as we reminisce tales of our past and what this film has brought to us, good or bad. There's a tonne to expose here, mostly that Fassbender pulls out the performance of a lifetime in one of the saddest and most tragic depictions of addiction in recent cinema history. Ryan still thinks that Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick in DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES is probably sadder but anyway. Are you asking "What is Uncomfortable Brunch"? Well, you're obviously a terrible fan as we kinda covered it when Josh was on for the Jackass Quadrilogy way back when but to repeat, you watch uncomfortable art films around midday on a Sunday to alcohol and brunch items with a cinema going crowd; it's awesome! An elder C.S. Lewis looks back on his remarkable journey from hard-boiled atheist to the most renowned Chrsitian writer of the past century. The Most Reluctant Convert features award-winning actor Max McLean as the older Lewis and Nicholas Ralph - breakout star of PBS Materpiece's All Creatures Great and Small - as young Lewis. Beautifully filmed in and around Oxford, this engaging biopic follows the creator of The Chronicles of Narnia from the tragic death of his mother when he was just nine years- old, through his strained relationship with his father, to the nightmare of the trenches of World War I to Oxford University, where friends like J.R.R. Tolkien challenge his unbelief. Norman Stone Norman Stone began his professional career in television as the youngest producer/director to be working at the BBC, and soon established himself as a top film maker with his highly acclaimed film A Different Drummer about the blind and deaf Christian poet, Jack Clemo. Four years later, he created Shadowlands, the gripping film drama on the love and loss of C.S. Lewis, which earned two BAFTA awards, an International Emmy, and the coveted ‘Prague D'or' for Best Director. This film went on to be an award-winning stage play, as well as a Hollywood movie.Other dramas followed included Martin Luther – Heretic, starring Jonathan Pryce; New World with James Fox; The Vision starring Dirk Bogarde, Lee Remick and Helena Bonham-Carter, and the award-winning Burston Rebellion with Eileen Atkins and Bernard Hill. Stone was also asked to direct the internationally acclaimed CBS co-production Pied Piper, starring Peter O'Toole. He then directed two of the famous BBC Miss Marples films, starring the iconic Joan Hickson in the title role, and also, The Black Velvet Gown, which earned him his second International Emmy. Always interested in experimenting with new forms of filmic storytelling, Stone went on to create and direct The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, which starred Jeremy Irons and was nominated for a prestigious ACE Award in the category of Best International Drama. This experience led directly to Tales from the Mad House, an award-winning series of one-man dramas, featuring such stars as Jonathan Pryce, Dame Eileen Atkins, Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, James Cosmo and Helen Baxendale, before making the gritty, Glasgow feature film, Man Dancin' which collected more international awards.A string of new dramas followed, including C.S. Lewis - Beyond Narnia, Florence Nightingale, The Narnia Code and KJB - The Book that Changed the World (winner of The Templeton, Movie Guide, Epiphany Prize). In 2020, Norman completed a major Feature Documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor, The Final Fix, exploring a remarkably effective new treatment for drug addiction, and in 2021, during lockdown, he wrote and directed a new, creative drama on C.S. Lewis called The Most Reluctant Convert. This film was cinema-premiered in over 500 American cities in November 2021 and has already been seen in over 120 countries around the world.Norman is currently preparing a dramatically challenging feature film, Raising Hell, the true story of the battle to beat child prostitution in Victorian England, and is also developing an exciting, new TV action series, ROK, set in Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.Website: https://cslewismovie.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16QFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CSLewisMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fpa_theatre/IMDB: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16Q

Book Vs Movie: “A Face in the Crowd” The Budd Schulberg Short Story Vs the Elia Kazan Classic Film Every once in a while we come across a story that was created decades ago and has themes that transcend time. This is the case with 1957's A Face in the Crowd which talks about class distinctions in America, the power of the media, what it takes to relate to the “common man” and how power corrupts. (Whoa--this one really stands the test of time!)  The original story, Your Arkansas Traveler, was featured in a collection from Some Faces in the Crowd by Budd Schulberg and published in 1953. It tells the story of an Arkansas drifter, Lonesome Rhodes (LR,) who rises to fame on regional radio with his country, “aw shucks” style and eventually becomes an egomaniac as a national TV star. Oh, and he has political clout as well! In the story, he is discovered by radio producer Marcia Jeffries who at first is charmed by LR and his plain-spoken ways. Eventually, she realizes he is a dangerous narcissist and works to stop him from having too much power. LR in the meantime has a wife he needs to get rid of, a teenage bride to keep him company, and a rabid audience that hangs as his every word. In the end, he dies before he can wreak too much havoc.  Schulberg wrote the screenplay for On the Waterfront and trusted director Elia Kazan to tell his story. The 1957 film stars Andy Griffith, Patricia Neal, Lee Remick, and Walter Matthau and while the film received mixed reviews at the time (the New York Times thought Andy Griffith overshadowed everyone in the film)--it is now considered a prescient classic. So, between the short story and the movie--which did we prefer?  In this ep the Margos discuss: The original short story by Budd Schulberg Behind the scenes of the movie fleming    Why it was considered controversial at the time  Starring: Andy Griffith (Lonesome Rhodes,) Patricia Neal (Marcia Jeffries,) Anthony Franciosa (Joey DePalma,) Walter Matthau (Mel Miller,) Lee Remick (Betty Lou Fleckum,) and Percy Waram as General Haynesworth.)
