He made the economic development announcements recently at the chamber's annual business summit. Babcock & Wilcox, a global leader in energy and environmental technologies, is investing $126 million in Mason County. State officials say the development will initially create 28 high-paying jobs with potential to expand. HandCraft Services, a leading provider of medical linen and apparel products, is investing $59 million to open a new facility in Berkeley County. State officials say that will result in 220 jobs.  Prime 6, which produces high-performing charcoal and wood logs and was featured on television's “Shark Tank,” will establish a manufacturing facility in Buckhannon. The $35 million investment is expected to create 75 jobs in the region. Spokesmen from all three companies addressed the chamber. They cited reasons for choosing West Virginia included its strategic location and state economic development officials going the extra mile to recruit. This no-cost event is a celebration of the Appalachian people unlocking their potential, power, and purpose.  Ground Up Gathering will welcome employers, partner nonprofits, economic development partners, and community members to Coalfield Development's West Edge Factory in Huntington to witness the life-changing work Coalfield and its partners are doing in Appalachia every day.  Highlights of the event include a farm-to-table dinner, community workshops, tours of WestEdge and live music.  Learn more: https://coalfield-development.org/ground-up-gathering/   #3 – From TIMES WV – A local success story run by a close knit family, Short Story Brewing is the recipient of the 2024 Family-Owned Business of the Year Award from the Marion County Chamber of Commerce. Rivesville native Aaron Rote, his sister Abigail Kopischke, and her husband, Mike Kopischke, started Short Story Brewing in 2017 after Mike Kopischke had been brewing his own beers for about eight years. Mike specializes on the brewing side while Abigail takes care of the business side. Rote handles the presentation side, such as the appearance of the taproom and working with people. Through their hard work, Short Story Brewing has opened three other locations outside of Rivesville: Deep Creek, Md., Charleston, and a new location in Morgantown. They also contribute regularly to the Rivesville area, investing back in the Rivesville Elementary/Middle School that Rote and his sister attended, hosting the Ready, Steady, Run 5K, and hosting community events in the distillery. Sen. Mike Caputo said how much Rote and the Kopischkes have given back is a testament to who they are as people. “They just got hearts of gold,” Caputo said. “They just always want to share their success with others. They don't keep it to themselves. Our first guests formed a partnership that's brewing up some fun in Roxborough; Sweet Java Cafe's owner, Victor Young, and Sales Manager for Mermaid Spirits, Joe Berendsohn joined me to chat about the newly-opened cafe & cocktails spot. This is Victor's first time opening up a coffeehouse, and thanks to a mutual friend of theirs, a partnership was formed with Mermaid Spirits. And what was the result? A large space where the community can grab a cup of their favorite coffee on the way to work, or even work remotely inside of while also enjoying some of the scratch-made pastries. And when it's a little later in the day--be sure to try out one of the coffee-infused cocktails or other mixed drinks and enjoy the fun vibes of the space and neighborhood! https://order.toasttab.com/online/sweet-java-cafeKeeping caffeinated is top priority for most individuals, so we spoke with co-owner Luisa Toro from Roosters Coffeehouse which is located in Ledgewood, NJ. Roosters Coffeehouse is also the first cafe business that Luisa and her family have opened, and they take pride in offering the highest-quality ingredients and experiences for everyone who visits. And it truly is a family business; Luisa's father learned the techniques on how to properly roast every bean from where it was sourced. The rest of the family have roles in the business as well, and take joy in offering menu items not commonly seen--but very much enjoyed--by all who visit. Change that is intentional and carefully managed over time is essential for the long term survival of a business. Katie Hopkins is the third generation President & CEO of her family's business, Truck Centers, Inc. (TCI), and she has experienced this reality first hand. After many years of slow and steady growth, TCI entered into a partnership with their primary supplier, Daimler Trucks, and they have seen growth increase a great deal in the last decade. This rapid growth has required an increased focus on change as well. In this Tugboat Institute® talk, Katie shares how TCI drove change, in their own business and across the Daimler group, by doubling down on their commitment to Change Management. The initial objective was to make the customer experience more standard across all Daimler locations, but the results reached far beyond this goal. In addition to serving as an example to the other dealerships in the group, above all else, Katie and her team have leaned into Change Management and Continuous Improvement as an effective and highly Evergreen® path to change and growth. Listen and be inspired to be more intentional about driving and making change in your organization.

Ashleigh is the author of Leading with Grit and Grace and she turned around a 50-year-old industrial furnace manufacturing and service business owned by her husband's family.During her tenure at Onex, Ashleigh became the president and she led the effort to turn the company into an employee-owned ESOP business. She attributes part of her success to her coach-approach leadership style which came about as she herself admits that she did not know everything when she started leading. Ashleigh left the company in December 2022 to become the Chairperson. The ESOP allowed the employees to buy the company without having to come up with any money. The employees funded the purchase of the business through the tax savings they made since they were no longer taxed on the income of the business. Ashleigh explains that the ESOP culture allowed for more employee engagement, which only increased after the employees became owners.HIGHLIGHT QUOTESASHLEIGH: Ownership created employee engagement and self-policing"I think that culture piece is really important because now you have owners in the company. And so what happened was they just had a stronger engagement. Once they became owners, they took even more pride and responsibility and wanted to make things better and they wanted to learn more about the business and how they could impact different pieces.""But the other thing that happened is we started seeing what I'll call policing within the employees. And so if you weren't doing what they felt like you should be doing, we're told to pick up the pace. We're all owners, we're in this together. And if you're not going to pick up the pace, get out of here."ASHLEIGH: Do a gut check about doing something differently"Anytime I have that gut check, I'm like, ah, I don't like that. Then I find another way. For instance, performance appraisals, and yearly annual reviews. I got rid of them. I did a gut check. I thought my managers hate doing them. People hate having them done. They hate being rated. It creates chaos and turmoil in our organization and I thought why are we talking about the past? That's how we came to the coach approach. Why aren't we looking to the future?"Connect with Ashleigh and get her book:LinkedIn | Website | AmazonIf you enjoyed today's episode, please subscribe, review, and share with a friend who would benefit from the message.
