On the last show, we dove into tunes from Teezandos, SR, Manga and more, plus we got deep into it with our segment of Everything is Grime. After that, we heard a spotlight tune from Gi Major, repping Earthtone and American Grime, before we hit up the Miami gang for a vibin guest mix from my boy Brightwing. Now this week, we are gonna smash into our Fresh 5, hit up the Everything is Grime list and spotlight tune it up, all before we get shelly with my guy repping London.. Drumterror.
On the last show, we heard some new Frisco, new Grim Sickers and new Ghetts, plus we got some fresh jams in our segment of everything is grime. After that, we heard a drillin spotlight tune before hitting up my homie Kemist for a dope guest mix out of Calgary. This week, we are chopping it up a little differently by doing a fresh 4 at the top of the show, followed by 4 tunes for everything is grime. Then we get into our spotlight tune and top it all off with a guest mix from Miami's own Brightwing.
Anne Elise and Royalite speculate about the next new rework, Brightwing being undefeated in CCL, CCL viewership and the Patch Notes in the news. It’s Friday Wonderlings time to celebrate!!, I’m your host Angela Bowen and you’re listening to Looking Back On My Wonder Years A Wonder Years Podcast. Today I’ll be reviewing S2E14 Brightwing which aired on April 18, 1989. In this episode we get to see the brother sister bond between Kevin and Karen as she ropes him in to be her messenger boy having him dropping notes off at the high school for her and Kevin gets to discover his free spirit at “the hill” while hanging out with Karen and her hippie free loving friends. That’s the end of the episode. Time for my Flower power episode rating: I’m giving it 3 out of 5 flower power petals 1. For the flashback of Kevin and Karen when they were younger showing us they’re strong bond compared to present day. 2. For Kevin and Karen bonding at the hill 3. For the sweet scene between Karen and her parents and the look shared between Karen and Kevin at the end. I knocked off two flower power petals for one the whole going back to the school to drop off notes I mean we saw it three times, that really drapped the episode down. While I enjoyed the message of the bonds of siblinghood, this episode kind of fell flat for me especially because we’ll get it again in Season 3 Episode 22 Daddy’s Little Girl when Karen prepares to graduate and turn 18. We get it she’s rebellious and has a difficult relationship with Jack, although this episode was more Kevin and Karen focused. My Wonderling Words of Wisdom: What I got from this episode this episode focused primarily on the bond of siblings and how even though they had grown apart over the years they were still there for each other. Even though my sister and I didn’t have the best relationship growing up and aren’t really that close now I know she will always be there for me. One memory I have is when our mother passed away from Lupus 15 years ago. I was at the visitation and when I walked in and saw my mother lying there in her coffin, I broke down and my sister wrapped me in her arms and held me as we both cried. I felt so close to her then united in sisterhood and grief together. Here’s my quote of the episode: I didn't sleep. I laid there... thinking about what had happened to Karen... to me... to all of us. About how big the world is, and how full of strangers. And how I might never see my sister again. In nineteen-sixty nine, people tried so hard to find themselves. Sometimes they got lost. Sometimes they found their way home again. I want to give a sincere thank to all you listeners out there whether you listen to this podcast on Itunes or Soundcloud or any other listening platforms that you may use to hear this podcast. I love giving you the episode recaps of The Wonder Years every week joining me as I go into full detail as we reminisce of days gone by with Kevin and his friends Paul and Winnie, and the rest of the Arnold family. as well as giving my occasional running commentary and childhood stories. To stay connected to the podcast: you can visit my many social media sites: Facebook Page: at Looking Back on my Wonder Years: A Wonder Years Podcast Instagram: lbomwonderyearspodcast Twitter: wonderyearspod Also if you enjoy this podcast rate, review and subscribe so you won’t miss an episode. Tells your friends. I do trivia and listener questions, so if you would like a shout out on the podcast all ya gotta do is answer them. Ok, well join me next Friday August 18 when I review S2E15 Square Dance which aired on May 2, 1989. In this episode The gym class is engaging in square-dancing, and Kevin is paired up with Margaret Farquhar, the strangest girl in 7th grade. While Margaret enjoys spending time with Kevin, her presence makes Kevin wary of his junior-high image. All right Wonderlings, have a great weekend and we’ll meet again same place, same time next Friday!!

Episode 86 is in the archives, and it was a really fun show. Joined by our guests talking about an art show this weekend downtown (When Visions Collide 2), a social media conference / retreat this weekend in Frankenmuth (the Social Media Association of Michigan's Social Media Retreat), IT recruiting here in the area (Brightwing), and all things Detroit (Daily Detroit) ...we had one hell of a range of topics and a whole lot of fun this time around...to the point where we even had to break into one of our infamous fifth segments... After our 1986-themed intro wrapped up, the mics went live and we were off and running. From tunnels that ran from the Playboy mansion to the homes of several celebrities to ISIS encroaching on the real-life Tatooine, all of the fun and excitement around Opening Day downtown, Bob's annoyance with the latest Android operating system update and more, as always, our first segment covered the news and events that have caught our eye. We also gave a quick recap of our event last week at Firebird Tavern, along with our upcoming event next week at Blackfinn in Royal Oak, so listen in for some details on those. For our second segment, we dove in with Leanne Rumsey, who's putting together When Visions Collide 2, an art show taking place downtown at the Tangent Art Gallery on Saturday night. There's going to be a wide range of artists covering everything from paintings to charcoals to stained glass and more there, and every piece that's there is going to be for sale. So whether you're looking for something for your home, your office, a cool gift, or just something cool to do on Saturday night, this definitely sounds like something you should be planning on checking out. The event has more than doubled in size since last year, so there's bound to be a little something for everyone and anyone...and odds are good we'll see you there if you go. For details and more information, check out their Facebook event listing over at https://www.facebook.com/events/877890205566523/ Next up, we chatted with Sola Obayan. We've known Sola for a number of years, from when she organized a social media panel on using social media to find a job back in 2012 that we took part in, and it was great to have her in to chat about the Social Media Association of Michigan. They've got a great event taking place this weekend (Friday through Sunday) in Frankenmuth that you social media types among our readers and listeners are going to want to be at. While they'll have tracks there for the beginners, the event is really geared towards people with some experience under their belts who are looking to deep-dive on case studies, best practices, and some heavier topics. With some great speakers covering a whole range of topics, if you're in this career track, then this is where you want to be this weekend...and good news, you can snag a 50% off discount for the next two days if you want to go. Listen in, and then hit their event page at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/social-media-conference-retreat-in-frankenmuth-michigan-tickets-14708201627 (and view that image there to see what you're looking for), or their website at http://www.smami.org/ for more information. Another 1986-soaked break later, and we were back with Russ Dotson from Brightwing for our fourth segment. As those of you who have been around for a while know, Russ was a guest on our very first episode, called in while he was deployed overseas, popped in while he was back stateside, was a crucial part in getting our Support the Troops events setup and running, and has been around the group for quite some time. We chatted about settling back in to civilian life now that he's back home for good and diving back into the all too fun world of information technology recruiting with Brightwing. They've got a wide range of positions available from engineering to more typical IT roles familiar to our group. Check them out,
IT in the D, Episode 50. We were going to call it "Girls, Girls, Girls", but then we realized that we'd probably get "Slapped, Slapped, Slapped", and so...yeah, no. As we knew it would be, this episode was a blast. We were joined in-studio by Kate Catlin of Assemble: Giving Small Businesses a Bigger Chance, Elyse Turner from Brightwing, and Erika Carlson of Girl Develop IT - Detroit and Detroit Labs. It was a wild ride from the get go... As always, our first segment ran through the introductions around the room, and then dove into some news and events that have caught our eye over the past week. The links to find those stories...and some we didn't get to due to time constraints but are still worth taking a look at...can be found down below. Kate Catlin For our second segment, we hopped in with Kate Catlin to talk about her project geared towards helping small business downtown improve the way they do things. She's got a Rockethub (kinda like KickStarter) campaign going to help fund site development of an online marketplace and exchange for local businesses to partner and work together. There's a whole host of cool incentives for donors, including coffee mugs from Great Lakes Coffee, a great lunch, a spin class, a tour of historic downtown bars, flower delivery, something for foodies, and tons more. Even though she hit her original goal, she's now aiming higher to get even more done, so check it out and donate at http://www.rockethub.com/projects/44667-assemble-giving-small-businesses-a-bigger-chance Elyse Turner Our third segment focused in with repeat guest Elyse Turner from Brightwing. We talked about the job market and the kinds of positions that Brightwing is currently on the hunt to fill, as well as what they're seeing in the local industry scene with regards to contract, contract to hire and permanent placement positions. We also dove into some common ground that we've all walked over from time to time - helping out college students (and others) who are woefully unprepared for the real world upon graduation. Students with 3.8 and higher GPAs that should be a lock for the jobs that they're not getting, and the feedback coming in says it's because of the lack of softer skills - they can't communicate properly, they don't know how to talk with people, they can't express what it is that they actually do or want to do...or even worse, they're showing up unshowered, completely unprepared... ...or they have their mom keeping tabs on the recruiter and the interview process... ...yeah, that's a great idea. Check out Brightwing and everything that they have going on out at http://www.gobrightwing.com/ Erika Carlson We saved the best for last (no offense to Kate and Elyse, of course) and our fourth and final segment roped our other repeat guest for the night, Erika Carlson, on to center stage. Erika has her hands in just as many (if not more) things as we do, and so it's always good when we get can our schedules to sync up so we can play catch up with her. And get a new drop or two for future usage... Her two main areas of focus these days are her work as one of the founders of Girl Develop IT - Detroit and her "real world" job at Detroit Labs. For those not in the know, she not only talks the talk, but has walked the walk herself. She was studying clinical psychology just a few years ago (which probably explains why she knows how to manipulate the three of us so easily and well) when she made the gutsy decision to switch gears and head into coding. Her frustration with finding good resources led her to partnering with a few others to start the Detroit chapter of Girl Develop IT, a 501c3 charitable organization dedicated to getting women more involved and engaged with technology by teaching them how to develop in various languages and get them up to speed for a new career track. That whole backstory can be heard way back in Episode 2 of our show here.

IT in the D, Episode 34. For those listening last week, Bob was horrified when he realized that last Monday being the 10th meant that this Monday was the 17th, and so we'd be in the studio on St Patrick's Day. We're all very proud of him for struggling through. Some great guests also made it in-studio with us on this greenest of days, including Gary, Elyse and April from Brightwing, our old buddy Russ Dotson who's back on leave for a couple weeks from his deployment overseas, and Adam from the DLux Expo popped in for a segment, which resulted in a couple rather random celebrity phone calls into the show. All in all, a great night...so on with the recap...
The IT in the D show is joined by Elyse Lopez, April Jennings, and George Opitz of Brightwing to discuss what they do, how they see the market going, interviewing tips and tricks, and more. Air date: 10/7/2013... The full episode of the 10/7/2013 show, and it was a really fun, solid episode. Everything from the history of Brightwing to hints and tips on your job search, why choosing the right recruiter to work with matters and the difference they can make, random news stories and more...this was a really great, fun time with everyone involved. Additionally, Russ Dotson has been a crucial part of our Support The Troops activities over the past few years, and was a guest on our very first installment of the IT in the D show. You can listen to that episode here - http://www.ITinTheD.com/listen/it-in-the-d-show-archives/episode-1-june-03-2013/, and then another when April and Elyse popped in over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/listen/it-in-the-d-show-archives/episode-8-august-5-2013/ They're recruiting for a wide variety of positions currently, and you can check out all of the gigs they're looking to fill out at http://www.gobrightwing.com/jobs/, or just hit http://www.gobrightwing.com/ to learn more about them and what they have going on. If you listened live, then you heard them talk about how important it is to them that they make sure they find the right fit for both their clients and their candidates, and based on everything we've seen and heard...we have no reason to doubt them at all.
IT in the D, Episode 12, full episode... IT in the D is joined by Mark Stanislav of Duo Security. Over the course of this episode, we talk security basics, two factor authentication, recap our Pink Slip Party event at Saint Andrews Hall on 9/19, and give away the free training class from New Horizons. The Pink Slip Party Recap: http://www.ITinTheD.com/6314/919-pink-slip-party-recap/ Photos from the Pink Slip Party are live on our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/ITintheD Mark Stanislav can be found on LinkedIn here: http://www.linkedin.com/in/mstanislav Duo Security: https://www.duosecurity.com/ The Duo Security event on two factor authentication with Girl Develop It - Detroit: http://www.meetup.com/Girl-Develop-It-Detroit/events/137213652/ Our Pink Slip Party sponsors: Arrow Strategies - http://www.arrowstrategies.com/ - should be a familiar name to most people at our events. They've been heavily involved with us for years, and were sponsors the first time we hit Saint Andrews Hall on 3/13/13. Additionally, Steve Gaura was on our IT in the D show a few weeks ago, and you can catch what he had to say about the industry as a whole, the types of positions his company is always looking to fill, and more over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/listen/it-in-the-d-show-archives/episode-9-arrow-strategies-and-yelp/ Steve in particular is truly part of the "core" of what our group is and does, so always keep him and Arrow Strategies in mind when you're looking. Brightwing - http://www.gobrightwing.com/ - was also a sponsor back on 3/13/13, and had a great group of folks there last night as well. Additionally, Russ Dotson has been a crucial part of our Support The Troops activities over the past few years, and was a guest on our very first installment of the IT in the D show. You can listen to that episode here - http://www.ITinTheD.com/listen/it-in-the-d-show-archives/episode-1-june-03-2013/, and then another when April and Elyse popped in over at http://www.ITinTheD.com/listen/it-in-the-d-show-archives/episode-8-august-5-2013/ Strategic Staffing Solutions - http://www.strategicstaff.com/ - is a relative newcomer to our events, but that doesn't make us any less grateful or appreciative for their support of what we do. They're based downtown right off Campus Martius, and even though you don't hear as much about them as you do some of the other companies that are located in that same circle, they're doing really great things and always looking for great people. Logicalis - http://www.us.logicalis.com/ - is also fairly new to our events, but they're getting more engaged ever since a long-time member of ours who has been coming to our events for quite some time took a job there earlier this year. They specialize in global virtualization solutions, and have some really cool offerings. They're also looking for some bright minds to join their team, so give them a look and keep them in mind. MEDC - http://www.michiganbusiness.org/ - we do a lot with MEDC, not necessarily as a part of "ITinTheD.org events", but Bob and I have spoken at a number of their Shifting Gears classes and really enjoy doing our part to help people in career transition with our 10 Commandments of Networking presentation. MEDC is far more than just the Shifting Gears program though, and they have a lot of great things going on all across the state in a number of capacities. New Horizons - http://nhgreatlakes.com/ - has been coming to our events forever, and they've helped literally hundreds of our folks find grant funding for training classes. So it wasn't really a surprise that they wanted to get involved, and they did so in a great way - one attendee at our event last night is now the winner of a free technical training class! Want to find out if you're the winner? Listen to our IT in the D show live on Monday night as they'll be in-studio with us to make the announcement. The Great Lakes Technology Showcase - http://www.
Our second attempt at Episode 8 came off very nicely. With some great in-studio guests, the conversation flowed really well, and we covered a whole host of topics... IT in The D is joined in-studio by Mark DiCarlo from Wolverine Technical Staffing (http://www.wolverinetech.com), Jason Gole from the OpenCo conference (http://det.openco.us), and Elyse and April from Brightwing (http://www.gobrightwing.com). Discussions range from the August 15th itinthed.com casual networking event for professionals in and around the metro Detroit information technology industry taking place on Thursday, August 15th at Conor O'Neill's in Ann Arbor that Wolverine is sponsoring food for the guests at, to what Wolverine Technical Staffing is looking for from the event, the types of positions they're looking to hire for, and what they see in the industry, and then out to the OpenCo event coming to Detroit in early September to showcase some of the coolest things going on in downtown Detroit that you can explore and see while chatting with the owners of the companies transforming the face of Detroit on a daily basis, and a good marketing perspective on the conversations taking place throughout the show. So Monday night was pretty awesome. You know...if we do say so ourselves. In case you missed the memo (and shame on you if you did), our "IT in The D" live internet radio show went live at 9pm on Monday night. We had some great in-studio guests, a couple phone calls, and just a great time was had by all. The best part? This coming Monday's shaping up to be even better... UPDATE: scroll down to the bottom to catch the links that will let you listen to this episode of the IT in The D show The evening began with some pre meeting Pabst Blue Ribbons, food, and wrestling talk strategic planning over at Third Street Saloon. If you haven't been to Third Street Saloon yet, you absolutely should. AWESOME little place, and it's an extremely safe bet that you will find us there every Monday night before we go on the air. If you DO go, get the "SMOG" meat pie. Trust me. The three of us met up, along with Russ Dotson (a recruiter from Brightwing who attends our events, and was one of our in-studio guests that night) , to just basically make sure our brains were all in synch. Which, of course, had nothing to do with the conversation that actually took place. From wrestling to Tazmanian Devil impressions (don't ask - long story), we chatted about anything and everything but the show that night. In fact, we were a little worried that we were riffing and cracking each other up so much that we should have just been recording that conversation and playing it back on the air because we'd be out of material... ...but that was hardly a realistic concern. You know us. We can talk for hours and Hours and HOURS and still not even be close to "empty". And so, meat pies consumed and PBRs downed, it was time to make our way over to the studio, just a few minutes up the road. After, of course, a quick stop across the street from the bar we were at to grab some snacks for while we were in studio. And beer. Don't think for two seconds we didn't grab more beer. What spinach is to Popeye, beer is to us. We arrived a little on the early side, and then proceded to climb Mt Everest walk up the four flights of stairs to where the studio is. Got ourselves situated, shook off some last minute jitters, and then made our way into the studio and took our spots. Which looked pretty much like you'd expect it would... If you want to come on the air with us, keep reading down... At 9:00pm on the dot (I know, I know...us starting something "precisely" on time is a bit shocking...good thing we're not the ones running things here), we began. The sounds of "The Eighties" by The Killing Joke hit the airwaves...and we were rolling. The Imperial March kicked in...and we adjusted our mics, and we were off and live and ohmygod this is crazy... But we did it. And from the feedback we've gotten, both during the show (yes, "thank you" to all of the people who sent us tweets, text messages, and all sorts of other distractions during the show...jerks...lol... ) as well as afterwards, it seems like it came across as well as we hoped it would. Thanks again for coming in, Wolfgang! At 9:30, we took a break and brought J Wolfgang Goerlich in studio with us to talk about his upcoming Security BSides conference that's taking place this weekend. While tickets are all sold out (so it was a bit of a tease, sorry), they are live streaming all of the speaker sessions and talks. If you're in or around the security field, or just have an interest in it, you really do want to pay attention to these guys. They'll have everything from a lockpick village setup to hands on hacking demonstrations and even a scavenger hunt to test your skills against 500 or so of your peers in the industry. Physical security and cyber security. Password cracking. Even stuff designed specifically for kids to help them be more aware and protected in today's digital world. We chatted about some security basics,
