Inner City Press went to the SDNY press conference to ask, What about Credit Suisse and Nomura and people in those banks? Loved chatting about the early years, the first guitar, being inspired by the Beatles, he was a Paul, a few years later, a thisclose encounter with John, SPX to Twisted Sister, the successes and the "if only." From clubs to stadiums, to wedding band and back again, ending the touring reign on top, once again headlining stadiums. We talked Eddie's Twisted Hot Sauce, it's fab, you can get it here: twistedhotsauce.com, his appearance on Chopped, moving to Nashville to be close to his son and first grandchild, daring a flight west to walk his daughter down the aisle, losing the quarantine 15 (already, damn!) by eating healthy, less and earlier, and leaning into his passion for bike riding (as in bicycle - he once considered going pro), and, what he's binging, a surprising choice. This year's City Council elections promise to bring new inspiring leaders from the Bronx to City Hall. Today we focus on candidates contending for the seat in District-15, which became vacant after Ritchie Torres left City Council to become a US Congressman. We interview two candidates running in District-15, Elisa Crespo and John Sanchez; both Elisa and John have developed refreshing and creative policy platforms that will elevate the voices and needs of Bronxites in municipal politics.  Each candidate was provided with a prompt to discuss a policy issue central to their platform that is connected to the health of the borough. Through these conversations we discuss proposals to build a birthing center in the Bronx, to combat food access injustices, and to devise a municipal public option for employment. We look forward to continuing this coverage as the June 22nd City Council primary approaches.  This episode was recorded on Friday, February 26th, 2020.

At least 61 marchers and bystanders were injured, according to a Human Rights Watch study. More than 250 were arrested, including Ms Jones. She says the cops had been waiting for a chance to crack down on the movement. Activists have clashed repeatedly with police in the eastern North Carolina city of Greenville. The protests have been led by the Mapinduzi organization and the Coalition Against Racism. Mapinduzi spokesman Dedan Wha-Kee-UR-ee says Greenville’s government continues to reject demands for Community Control of Police, an independent prosecutor for police brutality cases, and that a police substation be turned into a People’s Resource center.   However, the city did agree to end its involvement with the Pentagon’s 1033 program, that funnels military weapons and equipment to local police. On this Episode, Jay and KB get the opportunity to sit down with two Fordham University students, Alex and Gerald. Alex and Gerald are leaders in the Fordham community who hold e-board positions for Asili, the Black Student Association at Fordham University. Asili is a Swahili word that means roots or foundation. We discuss the power of knowing your history and understanding your roots. Alex and Gerald are honest, vulnerable, and have no problem speaking truth to power. They discuss Asili playing an integral role in demanding the President of the University release a statement about the injustice Black folks experience in this country. We learn more about the racism that is still happening on Fordham's campus and the disconnect between the Fordham community and local Bronxites. This is a very special episode for KB as he is very nostalgic thinking about his time as part of Asili. Unfortunately, a lot of things have not changed since KB graduated from Fordham, but we are hopeful. This group of Asili students have a wonderful legacy and foundation to build on, and they are brilliant, fearless, and purposeful. Many movements in history have had a strong presence on college campuses, why would now be any different? Asili has something to say; we need to listen.

Advocates of Medicare for All are burying the lead, did you know it includes dental coverage? New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera comes to the front of the class to breakdown the detailed aspects of the widely supported policy and discuss how states can adopt universal healthcare coverage. There are a lot of terms thrown around in the debate over healthcare, here are a few; Universal Coverage: The ultimate goal is for everyone to have health insurance. Single-Payer: A category of healthcare coverage in which the government provides insurance to everyone and pays the bills. Public Option: A government run insurance plan is offered in addition to private health insurance plans. Medicare for All: One of many policy proposals to achieve universal coverage that would create a national health insurance program in which everyone is covered and the government is the single payer. Our Guest: @NYSenatorRivera New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. In 1998, Gustavo graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and moved to New York to begin a doctoral program in political science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. A proud Bronxite, he has lived in Kingsbridge Heights for almost 20 years. He has represented the 33rd Senate District in the Bronx since November of 2010. The 33rd Senate District includes the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge Heights, East Tremont, Crotona Park, Fordham, Mount Hope, Belmont, Van Nest, Claremont, and Morris Park. Since taking office, Senator Rivera has focused his efforts on addressing issues of health inequity both legislatively and on the ground. In 2011, Senator Rivera launched the Bronx CAN (Changing Attitudes Now) Health Initiative. The goal of this community oriented health initiative is not only to encourage Bronx residents to develop healthy behaviors, but to shape policies that will help tear down some of the institutional barriers that stand in the way of Bronxites having a healthier lifestyle. Host Alice Backer of Kiskeacity.com and Hugues Girard play interviews of protestors of Hillary Clinton as commencement speaker for Medgar Evars College's graduating class last Thursday June 8th.  Among those interviewed are life long activist Frisner Pierre of Komokoda, Haitian-American Gem Isaac of Bronxites for NYPD Accountability, Haitian-American Yole César and Dwayne Neckles of the United Africa Movement.  Hugues also offers a (short) rundown of the spate of labor union strikes in Haiti that have caused certain factories to shut down.

What do Al Pacino, Regis Philbin, Mary Higgins Clark and Colin Powell all have in common? They're all Bronx natives.  And all of them are featured in a new book called Just Kids from the Bronx: Telling it the Way it Was: An Oral History.  The book includes the stories of more than 60 native Bronxites who have gone on to make important contributions in nearly every field imaginable, from acting to science to athletics.  Author Arlene Alda, who happens to be the wife of television and film star Alan Alda, is our guest on this edition of Cityscape.
