Numbers 21:4–9The Bronze Serpent[4] From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. [5] And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” [6] Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. [7] And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. [8] And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” [9] So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. (ESV)
The four friend find themselves in the middle of chaos as they learn about the bronze serpent.
The serpent ornament brings Mr. Truman to Numbers 21, where God healed His people when they looked at the bronze serpent lifted high. Jesus uses this moment to explain His own mission: He would be lifted up on the cross to save all who trust in Him. On the Jesse Tree, each sign points us to Jesus. Today we remember that looking to Christ brings life—now and forever.Follow Us:Instagram | Website | Newsletter Editing and support by The Good Podcast Co. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Growing In God Podcast Program Number: GIG #274 Title: The Bronze Serpent Web Description: Do you feel like you are being bitten to death by your circumstances and problems? Get your focus back on Christ. Renew and deepen your relationship with Him because He Himself is the answer. He Himself is the victory and the overcoming of any situation that we are in. And by believing in Him, we will not perish in our circumstances but instead have eternal life. Show Notes: When the children of Israel complained against the Lord and Moses in the wilderness, the Lord sent them poisonous serpents. So the people repented and asked the Lord to remove the serpents. That however is not what God did. Instead, He told Moses to make a bronze serpent and lift it up on a standard. And if anyone looked at the serpent, that person would live. That story has great meaning for us today. The children of Israel had become entirely focused on the material world rather than on the presence of God who was with them day and night. They were entirely focused on what they were unhappy about and what they did not have, ignoring all that God was providing them. As Christians we too tend to lose our focus on the Lord. We start to focus on what we are lacking and what we wish we had in the material world. We sometimes forget that we have the Holy Spirit to lead us and guiAde us, that Christ is in us, and that we can be filled with all the fullness of God. Just like in the wilderness, we may be asking God to remove our problems that are like poisonous snakes biting us. But we should not be surprised if those problems do not go away. We should expect that God will give us something else to focus on. He may even be using our problems to get our focus back on Him. He is looking to bring us to Himself, to a life in Him, to a life in His Word, to a faith and a walking in Him that we may not be doing at the moment. Christ was lifted up just like that bronze serpent in the wilderness so that in Him we can have eternal life. He is our answer. And we need to live in Him more than we need to try to solve our problems. Key Verses: • Numbers 21:4–11. "If a serpent bit any man, when he looked to the bronze serpent, he lived." • 2 Peter 1:3. "His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness." • Psalm 103:2. "Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget none of His benefits." • Luke 21:28. "When these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads." • John 3:12–21. "As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up." Quotes: • "It seems almost impossible to think that we would get tired of having the Lord's presence with us day and night. But I think in all honesty, we do lose our focus on the Lord, and we tend to bring our focus back into the lower level or lower realm of the natural world." • "Instead of taking away our problems, many times what He does is He gives us an answer that brings our focus and our relationship back to Him. Because ultimately, He's the answer." • "You're going to get tired of this journey that we're on in these end times if you are focused only on what's going on around you. But if we can keep our focus looking up, looking upon the Lord and what He's provided, then these other things are not going to destroy us." Takeaways: 1. The children of Israel magnified their unhappiness about the wilderness to the point that they despised God's provision. And we need to realize how we can get so focused on what we dislike about our circumstances that we forget the Lord's benefits. 2. God's answer to the serpents in the wilderness was not to remove the serpents but to get the people's focus back on Him. And God may not be answering your prayer by removing your circumstances but by getting your focus back on Him. 3. When you see all the things beginning to happen in the end-time, raise your eyes above the material world and focus on Him and His Kingdom. Make Him your focus and make Him what you are journeying to.

Send us a textWillie is home sick and missing Sabbath School when his friends bring class to him. After a sweet visit and a lesson about the bronze serpent, Willie falls asleep and dreams he is in the Israelite camp, bitten by a snake. His friends race him through the crowded tents to look at the serpent on the pole. Willie chooses to trust God, looks up in faith, and is healed. He wakes to find his fever lower and learns with Mom why some people would not believe and how God's love invites us to trust Him. A gentle story that helps kids understand “look and live” and how Jesus heals those who believe. Send us a textAfter years in the desert, the Israelites grumble again when water runs out. Moses loses his patience and strikes the rock instead of speaking to it, and God sadly tells him he will not lead the people into Canaan. Later, as the people complain, poisonous snakes sweep through the camp. God gives a surprising rescue plan. Moses lifts a bronze snake on a pole, and everyone who looks in faith is healed. This story points to Jesus, who would be lifted up on the cross so that everyone who believes in Him can live forever. In John 3, a Pharisee named Nicodemus comes to Jesus by night to ask questions, and Jesus tells him that the in order to be saved you must be born again, born of the Spirit, not of flesh. He uses the story of the Bronze Serpent in Numbers 21 to show how it is a picture of the salvation Jesus offers. Then, many of John the Baptist's disciples note how many are leaving him to follow Jesus. John the Baptist affirms their choice since Jesus from above and greater than himself. Both stories remind us that it is only through belief in Jesus as the Christ that we find eternal life. For more information on this study, go to FeastingOnTruth.com/JohnFor recommended resources, go to FeastingOnTruth.com/ResourcesFor booking inquiries, go to FeastingOnTruth.com/Speaking

While we are to put our trust in God and His Word for everything in life, how much more must we turn to Him and His instructions when we are facing times of crisis? Like the Israelites, when we have been “snake-bit,” we are to look to God's revelation of His will as found in His Word; when we do so by faith, we will receive the remedy that is found therein. This grace is found and mediated to us through God's work in Christ. Whoever looks to Him in faith will also live and will also be healed.
We journey with the Israelites as they face resistance and hostility from nations like Edom and the Amorites on their way to the Land of Canaan. Despite these challenges, God continuously provides victory for His people. The Israelites face a significant event where God sends serpents due to their lack of faith and continuous complaints. However, they find healing by looking at a bronze serpent that Moses sets up on a pole. Support the showRead along with us in the Bible Brief App! In this sermon, we looked at how the story in Numbers 21 is more than just a strange moment in Israel's wilderness journey—it's a powerful foreshadowing of the gospel. When the Israelites were bitten by fiery serpents because of their rebellion, their only hope for healing came not through human effort, but by looking in faith at a bronze serpent lifted up on a pole. In John 3, Jesus tells Nicodemus that just as the Israelites looked to the bronze serpent and lived, so must every person be born again by looking to the Son of Man, who would be lifted up on the cross. The central theme of this sermon—and of God's overall redemptive story—is that salvation cannot be earned; it is a gift we receive by putting our faith in Jesus.

Fr. Mike explains how the bronze serpent is a prefiguration of Jesus on the Cross. We also continue to learn how God's laws in Deuteronomy redefine the social and sexual norms for the Israelites to teach them about the dignity of every human person. Today's readings are Numbers 21, Deuteronomy 22, and Psalm 102. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. One of the most important principles of the Christian life is that of living by faith. Today, we're studying Numbers 21 where the people's faith is truly a matter of life & death. We'll see the severity of their situation and how their faith prefigured the faith that we're to have in Jesus as our only way of salvation. Join us for another important study in God's Word! DISCUSSION AND STUDY QUESTIONS: 1. The podcast mentioned that we skipped over several chapters which chronicled several difficult challenges that the Children of Israel faced. What do you think the people's mood would have been like at this point? 2. What were the events of Numbers 21:1-3? What did the Children of Israel do? How was this unique? How did the Lord respond to them in verse 3? 3. Verse 4 sets up the main event of this chapter. Verse 4 mentions that they had left Mount Hor and were going around the land of Edom. This was going to be a 200-mile detour. How did the people handle this in verse 5? How do you think you would have responded to a 200-mile trek that was out of your way? 4. In verse 6, what was the Lord's response to their complaints? How was their response different in verse 7? 5. In verse 8, what did the Lord tell Moses to make? What were the children of Israel supposed to do with this? What would happen if they obeyed? Did people obey? 6. The podcast went over some of the heart change their obedience would demonstrate. What do you think their obedience reflected about their belief in God? 7. Now, fast forward 700 years to 2 Kings 18:1-4. What were the people doing with the Bronze Serpent in this passage? How did their behavior reflect the people's faith now? What did Hezekiah do with the Bronze Serpent? How did his actions reflect his faith and obedience? How do Hezekiah's actions show us the way to handle anything that gets in the way of true worship? 8. In John 3:14-16, Jesus refers to this event when explaining the kind of faith we need to have to be saved. How does looking at the Bronze Serpent prefigure the faith we are to have in Christ? What are we to be trusting Christ for? 9. How is Jesus the only way of salvation, in a way that is similar to the Bronze Serpent being the only way the people could be saved? In this episode, we look at the bronze serpent that Moses made. When people looked at the serpent lifted up on the pole they'd be healed from the poisonous bites the serpents had afflicted them. We look at why the Lord commanded Moses to do this, the significance of it and what we can learn from it today. We also look at how Jesus said when He is lifted up in the same way, He'll draw all men unto Him. Jesus can heal us in the natural and spiritual. Today we need to lift up Jesus and look to Him for healing in every area of our life!
It was my sixth birthday; I felt so special. We had a party with hats, decorations galore and a great big birthday cake. All my friends came and that was good. All my friends came with presents, and that was better. I made my wish, blew out the candles and smiled. I felt invincible on August 27, 1965, like everything would always go my way. I was not quite thirteen. We lived on the plains of West Texas, where everyone, including children, worked hard. One afternoon, I was helping a farmer move his equipment from one section of land to another. He drove the tractor, I drove his bright red, new Chevrolet pickup. I put my foot on the accelerator trying to catch up to him, the wheels turned sharply when the front end hit a sandbar in the middle of the dirt road, the pickup went from one side of the road to the other until, finally, I lost control. It crashed into the bar ditch through a barb wired fence onto a nearby field. The impact thrust me through the windshield leaving me bleeding, dirty and disoriented. I didn't feel invincible. Most days, I'm not the birthday boy. People don't bring presents and there are no candles to blow out. Neither do I go crashing through the windshield of the boss' pickup. Today is somewhere between those experiences. Not everything will go right, but neither will everything go wrong. We are not better because of the sum of our good experiences, nor are we worse because of our negative ones. Life is full of both. How we handle prosperity and adversity shows everyone who we really are. Our attitude determines our happiness. “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11 ESV).
